Moto G car holder - Moto G Accessories

Hi,
Hopefully I will receive my brand new moto G today to replace my old moto defy.
I have the defy car holder which is simply perfect.
Is there an equivalent somewhere for the moto G?

I've used a magnetic holder for a fair long while. Magnet on car dashboard, small black metal plate stuck to back of phone, bosh done. No idea what's special about the defy holder but have loved the neatness and lack of suction cup look of my magnetic holder for years.

It was an officiel motorola car holder : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1407814
Moreover, there was an automatic switch to car mode (with big icons) when the phone was put in the car holder.
Do you have an url of where I can see your holder and where you can buy it?
Thanks!

Mines just one I grabbed in a service station. Wonder holder I think its called.
As for switching modes. I've seen YouTube vids of folk using tasker to set up special modes when in presence of magnets. So could work like that.

I emailed Brodit.
We have no model specific holder planned for the Moto G at the moment.

Brodit acts quite fast to the market demands. I'm pretty sure, soon they will do it.

What about the Moto X Car Dock by Griffin? The Moto G is nearly the same physical size as the Moto X; it's 129.4mm (X) vs 129.9mm (G) and nearly the same depth.
Has anyone tried this?

I'm going to really want a good car dock for my Moto G too. I hope one of the manufacturers makes one specifically for the Moto G.

I don't know...normally I'd agree, but since the Moto G is very much a budget smartphone and Brodit stuff is usually not cheap, they may not feel a particular need to rush out a product for it. Even if they did release one, I'm not sure they would sell many of them. A Moto X holder with charger cable + dashboard mount plate for my vehicle would run me USD $90, which is half the cost of the phone itself. *I* would buy it -- Brodit makes good stuff -- but I'm not sure how many other people would.

Exomount is good and future proof.

You'd still probably be better off with a universal holder.
http://www.brodit.se/nSearchList.ht...Query=true&query=sort_intern:adjustableholder
Considering the Moto G is now a 'Google Play edition' device, I think the chances of a specific holder being released are much greater.

I bought the TomTom micro USB holder. This was on offer at Amazon UK recently for £20. Frankly nothing attaches as easily or securely to the windscreen and I have been through a number of generic holders that either lacked in the suction department or were otherwise flimsy and snapped under the weight of the phone.
As an added bonus, the TomTom has a mic extension and built in Bluetooth for hands off navigation plus a integral speaker for added volume when navigating.

Anyone know if it's possible to install the Motorola Car Dock app that comes preinstalled on the Moto Defy+? it's a useful app with big buttons, ideal for car use.
I tried installing the apk that I took from my Moto Defy+ but the Moto G fails to install (presumably I need to root the MotoG to install this? - the Moto Defy+ was rooted thus I could remove the apk file from it)

I have no idea if it's good or not but there is one on eBay for the Moto G.

The same one on amazon has 1 review and that's only 1 star so they didnt seem impressed.

Your defy's car mode was probably activated from a magnet in the car mount. This is how the OG Droid and my Moto X activates car mode. I just bought the Moto G for my son and took the back cover off to examine. I'm not sure if the Moto G has a magnetic sensor. You could always use tasker to setup a profile for starting car mode.
I also have the original Google car mode apk if you'd like. I use it on my Moto X, because its much more simple and easier to setup then Car Home Ultra.

Car Mount

Considering the Incredible's Car Mount wasn't great... any ideas on good car mounts for the Thunderbolt? I figure there should be plenty of options out there because it has the same form factor/size as the Desire HD and Evo.
I'm looking for something easy... maybe two magnets, attach one to the back piece of a two-piece case and use it to attach it to a magnet stuck onto your car's dashboard? Anyone have a setup like this currently?

I'd love for some kind of car mount that would allow shooting of video while driving. either a suction cup to the windshield with a hole (or self dremel job hole like people did for the D1) or something that can attach to the rear view mirror.

I loved my OG Droid car mount, which broke recently. I used a Dremel tool to cut a hole for the camera and it worked great. I hope the car mount can move as freely as the Droid mount did. Really hoping for a desktop dock, too.

I picked up my Thunderbolt as well as a car mount today I was pleasantly surprised that the car mount does not cover the camera and that it has a place to plug in your car charger. It seems well constructed.

Mine sits a little high on the USB end..... I really wish there was a way to get back into the car home mode though after you exit it..... right now I've been having to undock and re-dock to re-launch car home.... really anoying.

Was the car mount an HTC product or a generic one that would work? Can you tell me the cost? I just picked up the TBolt but my store didn't have anything so just wondering what my options are.
Car mount is made by HTC and is $29.99 retail at any Verizon store or online at vzw.com

If motorola didn't happen to patent their magnet method that they used on their droid models, I would assume it would be a similar, if not the same method...
I think the magnet is standard, my htc eris, and fascinate worked by magnents
A general observation, here - if you want a bodaciously well built mount, look at Ram-mount . I have one in my Civic with two heads I can swap - 1 for iPad, one universal cell/pda.
Not cheap, in construction OR price...

I like and will keep the HTC Car dock. It suits my needs and is car to car transferrable.

I had no idea the Eris or Fascinate had magnetic switches or any way of knowing they were docked automatically.
I know the HTC Incredible has no magnetic switching or anyway of knowing its docked, basically there isn't an automatic dock mode on the Incredible at all.

No,, it seemed to dock fine. Make sure you snap it behind the top overlap piece. I was very pleased that it did not cover the camera and the it has the usb mount. Charging the OG Droid while in the dock was a real pain. I shot some video with it docked this AM and it performed fine. The road was not real smooth so it picked up the bumps, but it beats me trying to hold it.
I can second and third the HTC dock is awesome. I'm coming from an original, then v2 droid dock.
There are a couple of things though.
1. You really have to jam the phone on the right side(by the usb) in the dock to get car dock to come up. Its super tight. You'll actually hear a click once you get it in far enough.
2. You can't get back into car mode if you exit out without redocking.
3. You can't dock the phone if you have any cases and such.
4. I can't seem to change any of the icon choices they give you. I'd much prefer a more "stock" car/home experience. There are a couple other minor annoyances I have with the "dock" program they use in general but it does work well.
Verizon has a car mount just like the OG Droid, it automatically turns the phone into a navigation, it only cost 30, I saw it yesterday, it has the magnets.
I might like a car dock if it fit my phone with the innocase on it.

Nexus 5 Car Mount Thread

How do you mount nexus 5 in your car. Post!
I'm using this: a 2 in one mount. It's an aged mount for my old s3, but it also fits new nexus 5 perfectly.
I have used this a number of times now. It holds the phone very solid.

I love my Tetrax FIX. I don't have my Nexus 5 yet (arriving tomorrow), but my wife and I both have Tetrax FIX's in each of our cars, as well as the attachments on our two current phones (HTC Evo 4G LTE & Samsung Galaxy S3). I'm assuming the Nexus 5 will still work with the Tetrax, as it is designed to be minimal and universal.
I usually wait for ProClip to come out with a new phone holder.

I have been using Tetrax for years on my iphone and my s4. I use an x-way version so i can landscape the phone easier. main issue issue get getting the dam metal dots to stick to the cases It generally boils down to a good chunk of crazy glue. Main issue is i plan to use wireless charging with it and i don't think having a steel disk glues to back of phone/case most likely will impair that. I was looking at buying an I-bolt.
proclip for sure. that's the only mount that will ever go in my car
*EDIT*
turns out it fits in my Nexus 4 proclip mount... but Google/LG decided to flip the micro USB port so i can't use the same hardwired charging cable (it's a right angle plug) without cutting it open, which i'd rather not do... but it fits, just no charging :-/
Just an fyi, according to the proclip facebook page, a person asked if they would get one for the N5 and they said they had picked up two devices and should have a mount ready in 4-6 weeks. They said updates on the nexus 5 proclip would be available via the facebook page.
I've just received one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007Y94CPO/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The quality is great, and because it's universal i won't need to buy a new mount for every new phone in future! The arms are spring loaded and released by a button on the back. Put the phone in, squeeze the arms together and it holds the phone perfectly. There's also a really nice rubber padding on every part that's in contact with the phone.
Most of the Amazon reviews are really positive too. I can't see there being any issues with it even after years of use. It really is a solid product! :good:
I believe the most convenient solution would be to use a Qi car dock: no connection needed and accommodate most cases. I looked around a little but but haven't found many options that look like they wont break down in a year
There is This one
That one (more expensive)
And This incredibly expensive LG official solution. (it got me thinking about making my own...
Any thoughts ? I really don't want to connect and dusconnect usb cables all the time ...
I bought this a while back for my GS4.
Works really well even with my ringke slim on the GS4.
To my surprise, it works with the N5 and without adding the thin metal plate as the N5 has the steel discs already built into it. It's not super strong like using the thin metal plate, but it holds fine.
The material on the mount (on top of the magnets) is also like that of the back of the N5 so it does rotate fairly easily once mounted so maybe in a landscape view, if not centered, it would move some on a bumpy road.

FYI the N5 is polarized differently than the N4. I realized this today driving to work in the SNOW. I can't see the screen at all when the phone is in landscape mode and I'm wearing polarized sunglassses. I don't particularly like portrait in the car, but my tasker/rotate workaround which isn't perfect (for google's RIDICULOUS decision to rip car mode out of android) coupled with the polarization issue will force my hand.
This clip rotates easily, thankfully. I know for many of you charging in the car dock is a must. For me I've learned to live without it.

Hi
Well I have this dreamgear desktop dock for my MOTO X...its a bit pricey but I like it...you can check out....
may be you find it better somewhere....
I have the official docks. I like them quite a bit.

Ive been checking Moto's website but they are still out of stock. I want a desk cradle.
I don't know if it's true or not but I saw someone say that they discontinued the official docks. I had one and to be honest it really wasn't that good, nothing about it made it really work well for the moto x it was the same as any universal dock.
Do active notifications work on the dock? I know that daydream takes over, but then what happens with notifications? Thanks!
Sent from my Rezound using Tapatalk
I have the Griffin "official" dock and it's not worth $30. It works find with the SUPCASE but I find the phone too easily rocked back and forth when docked. The dock feels like something you would buy off Ebay for $5 w free shipping from China. Okay maybe not that cheap but you get the idea. Daydream works well. Haven't noticed any notifications though. I don't think any come across when in daydream.
Edit: By default when you put the phone in the griffin dock and daydream activates there are no active notifications displayed. I only see the clock on the screen with the notification sound. If I tap on the screen it makes daydream go away and the screen goes black. Once I do that, new active notifications start showing up. I haven't tried anything else since I like daydream and prefer that mode when docked.
The only thing I miss on my Moto X is the wireless charging my Nexus had. A nice dock would go a long way to address that, but this ain't the one. It really looks out of place, and if it disables notifications (even temporarily) what's the point.
I am hopeful we'll see a nice 3rd party offering, but I'm not betting the farm on it.
Does anyone know what the Moto X is using to go into dock mode? I have both the Motorola Flip stand with smart cable, and the droid 3 dock, both which put my Droid M into dock mode, but have no effect on the Moto X. I would like to be able to use it as a nightstand clock, like I do with my M.
Thanks,

Thanks, I guess I'll need to be a bit creative if I don't want to purchase another dock. I wouldn't mind if there was one that held the phone in the horizontal direction (landscape), so the clock numbers are large. But so far, since the power button is on the bottom, they all hold it vertically.

Hello all, just got my parents the Moto G for Christmas and I went ahead and got them this car dock. It's super strong! The circular metal plate that comes with the dock is thin enough to slip in between the back cover and the battery. All I did was add a drop of super glue to keep it from moving around. Obviously it won't charge, you'll need to buy a standard car adapter, but for $25, I'm very impressed!

That's interesting, wonder if the magnet affects battery life/reception or not.

I don't think so. I use a Nexus 5 with a LG Qi charger with some glued in neodymium magnets and I haven't had a problem with charging, reception, or battery. Of course that doesn't have a metal plate behind it. But with the Moto G, the metal plate wouldn't be touching the phone (presumably where the antennas lie), only the plastic back cover
Sadly the UK amazon & eBay don't seem to have any, I'll have to see if the US Amazon ship to UK

I use a "wonder holder" her in the UK, same premise strong magnet, metal plate (although wonder holder's is smaller and neater)
Costs £5 from any petrol station pretty much. Seen them everywhere.

I'm planning to make my own one (already bought all the needed parts, just gotta wait for them to arrive).
Is there a way to get the phone to go into car mode when docked with these?

Tasker has magnetic field trigger that can be used in this scenario.

I don't think that will work. There is a magnet placed in the phone too.
at least it works with my MotoG. You just have to specify a range of values that triggers the car mode (with and without the 'trigger_magnet'.

the magnets used for the holder are much stronger than the one inside so it should work, but I haven't yet tested it myself

So the thing you put inside the phone is actually just metal. The dock is magnetic. It works just how you described.
The dock is great.
glad you are happy I created a home made version of it, but haven't finished the part that gets into the car

Let us know, how your home made solution worked. Spending some $25 on a cradle is a bit too much for me...
Another thing is, does the navigation app shows the north direction properly with this type of magnetic dock?

actually I already tested it without the car. (put the magnets freely on a big steel plate, small layer of a used balloon rubber over them for traction. On the phone I only put a small layer of steel behind the cover, that's all.
during the test I just tapped the phones to the rubberized magnets and started to move the big steel plate in every direction with increasing force. It did hold even with putting so much force that could throw the phone like 20 meters.
Now I just need my car back from the shop so I can fit the holder to its final place.
If you are interested I can check for the exact type of magnets and provide screenshots about the final product

Much appreciated the info. Please let me know the type of magnet you bought. If it's online, please share the link with us.
Could you test the GPS with the magnet connected, if it shows the north properly?
Any Neodymium magnet will do.
Here's the one i bought : http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
Edit:
You can even salvage an old/used/broken Harddrive as it contains two of them.

the magnets found in hard drives are just too weak to hold the phone during driving.
(I will test the compass tomorrow as I have my magnets at work right now)

I'm not sure about it.
I've seen a video where a guy test the magnet's strength with a whole bunch of keys which looks heavier than a phone.
You've got classes for those magnets, cheapest ones are usually N35, some of the strongest are N48. So basically if you put several N35 (like i'll do with my previous order) you'll end with strong ones.

magnet size matters, and if you find a neodymium one in a hard drive it will be tiny like hell, otherwise it would kill it. Also don't forget that here we have the back panel between the magnets and the steel part and that requires much more force to hold the phone from this 'far'

these little parts are cut from a 1mm wide steel disk so they fit in the little holes in the back without adding bulk to the phone. As the holder part I used two 20x5mm round N35 magnets next to each other, one facing upside-down so they create a stronger loop. On them I put some rubber coating for traction (cut from party balloons).

My Nexus Wireless Charger Car Mount Setup

Hi everybody! I've seen a few threads about figuring how to use the Nexus Wireless Charger as a car mount/dock for our Nexus 5 phones and this is the solution that I've come up with. It's not the cheapest option as this charger costs more than most others out there. However, I wanted to utilize one of the standout features of the Nexus 5 which is being able to use the wireless magnetic charger out of the box without any modifications. I also didn't want to do any drastic mods to mount that to my car. I've seen other threads showing how some of you smart engineer types can rig some cool setups using paper clips and rubber bands. I'm no Macguyver (though I wish I was that smart).
I actually have tried to mount a wireless charging dock. This was a few years ago when I had the Palm Pre, which had the wireless charging (and also magnetic) Touchstone. To keep it short, I used this moldable plastic stuff to fix it to a car mount, which was then screwed onto my dashboard. It was not pretty at all. Plus, that moldable plastic ended up melting on a hot summer day. Shortly after that Palm got sold to HP and webOS went the way of the Dodo. I moved on to a Samsung Galaxy SII and have been missing the webOS cards and the Touchstone ever since.
Now comes the Nexus 5. To my surprise Google/LG also announces the awesome Nexus Wireless Charger. FINALLY something equivalent to the amazing Palm Touchstone. I just HAVE to have it.
Once you use something like a Touchstone and the Nexus Wireless Charger, it's tough to go back. Yes, you can still plug in the microUSB cord and yes it's not a big deal. But once you start using a nice magnetic wireless charger, you'll know. You just pop the phone on, it holds in place, and charges. Simple. In the car it makes absolute sense. Now I wish that the stock Android homescreen supports landscape mode by default and that there was a better interface for car use, but those are software issues which I think will only get better with time. As far as hardware goes though, the Nexus 5 along with the Nexus Wireless Charger on a good car mount works amazing. No need to modify the phone or your car dashboard and the magnet holds the phone on strongly. The only main disadvantage hardware-wise is that the phone has to be naked for the magnet to hold strongly. I also wish the Nexus 5 has the Touchless Controls of the Moto X; that would seem like the perfect thing to do have while the phone is docked on the car.
TLDR version: Magnetic wireless chargers are friggin awesome and are even more awesomer to use as a car dock. List of stuff, pics and video below.
Please excuse my dirty dusty car, poor speaking skills and shaky camera.

The 'Sticky Suction' items are new and don't seem to be on the site yet, but they're listed in the 2014 catalog PDF. I was able to order directly from them and pick up since I live nearby in Southern California. I like their modular approach to the car mounts by having the ball and dual T adapters and I was glad to find something that I could easily stick the Nexus wireless charger to for my setup.
Also if you're wondering, this is the USB Car Charger I'm using and it seems to not have any problems so far.

I don't know how much I trust that magnet did it fall off on anyone im really tempted to try this out
I really want to do this, but I feel like you can only do this if you don't use a case. Even though the wireless charger should work with thinner cases, I don't think the magnet will hold very well unless the phone is naked.

Correct. I haven't seen a magnetic one yet that can hold this phone with a case on. It's kinda weird considering phone cases are the norm. Why not make it with stronger magnets to compensate?
Sent from the jaws of my Hammerhead!
Better question is why can't someone make a case with metal tabs in the same locations as the phone?
That way the magnets wouldn't have to be stronger.
They'd have my money instantly.

Nice project man! Very clean!
Can you do me a favor? When the phone is attached, can you measure the magnetic field? Just use an apk that measure with the magnetic field sensor of the phone.
Thanks a lot!

I have done pretty much the same thing (just a different mount) but I had had issues finding a USB cable that will work. Can you tell me which one you used?

The Google LG Brand Quick Cover (the flappy one) actually has steel bits to align with the magnets. It actually holds on stronger than without the case!
This is VERY cool! Thank you!
Quick question, do you get any vibrations when driving, or when you hit a speed bump? I drive a truck and the dash vibrats... I wonder if it would hold. I guess I could always connect it to the glass...
Is your phone charging when you are using navigation app (Google maps for example)?
I've tried with Chinese cheap wireless charger and performance for this case isn't amazing.
At least it's not discharging, but not able to charge with navigation on.

I wanted to know the same, as I have a similar setup as the op but when I use gps the battery drains faster then it charges, trying to work out if the 2a car charger isn't supplying enough current or gps just isn't possible with wireless charging?
I need the different links to the apparatus, one of arkon items cannot be shipped to india.
