[Q] M8 wifi tech question - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a shiny new m8 on its way to be delivered today, but I have a question I haven't been able to find the answer to. What kind of 802.11ac wireless speed does the m8 have? Is it MIMO? How many streams? I'm curious what kind of connectivity speeds can be expected....
Thanks!
Wally

I dunno, but my M7 can do 433Mbps connection speed, managing 100-200Mbps against speedtest.net.
I doubt the M8 is slower.

It does pretty darn good, not the best I've seen here but it's cable so it has its ups and down.

Any updates on this? I was looking for the same information on the web, but have yet to find it. When I was looking at my M8 today after installing my new AC router, I knew 433MB seemed low [or at least very familiar]. Glad to hear that this is what it probably was prior to changing out to an Netgear R7000, but I figured that it would use more of the 1600MBps that is 'available'.
Even GSMArena didn't have the specifics [though I see the LTE is faster in the M8]:
http://web.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6074&idPhone2=5313

I have an M8 now and I think the speeds are the same as I mentioned above, 433Mbps connection, peaking at 200Mbps in a speed test.

T-Mobile 42Mbps?? Yeah right.

Is anyone pulling higher speeds then 700Kb a second on T-mobile's network? I am in Jacksonville, FL where apparently T-Mobile has recently upgraded the network to 42Mbps. I know that the G2 does not support that top speed, but I figure I should be getting better than 5Mbps when they are advertising 42Mbps.

Its all BS, look @ the G2x the highest anyone got was 12mbps and its a 21mbps device as tmo advertised it. And those are the speeds we should be getting on the G2, not even 12 we should be getting even 10mbps, and the highest I've gotten was 9 and was just once in tampa florida, in NY the highest was 8

Thanks....its good to know I am not the only one.
If its to good to be true then it probably is.
You're getting better speeds than I am. I normally get around 2-3 or 4 Mbps here in socal. A few weeks ago I was getting speeds of 5-8 Mbps before they turned on the 42Mbps. And I'm on the new Tmo radio too.
Are you guys seriously complaining about something like this. Do you get on your internet service provider because they say you have 20mbs which I can almost guarantee you clock no where near that on a regular basis? The speeds advertised are all theoretical. Basically in the perfect conditions with no other traffic on the network you could attain the advertised speed. Our phones are actually not capable of the new speeds. They are only capable of the original hspa+ speeds that are advertised as 21mbs and lower. The new devices that they have for mifi and what not are the only ones that can use the new 42mbs. Go to any other carrier and you will find the same result. Its called marketing (4g anyone) and it will be around longer then you and I.

I see nothing wrong with this thread. I'm not even close to what the G2 should be capable of.
Average down for me here in Sac, CA is 3.9 Mbps.

To me, it's not complaining, but more observing. Especially when, my case I was getting better speeds a few weeks ago compared to now. I understand that more people on the network means more draw and therefore lower speeds. However, one would assume that if a carrier comes out with better service/speeds that older devices would benefit, even though they obviously aren't built for it. I think what's happening here is the same that's been going on, at least with T-Mobile, for the last few years: They come out with higher speeds and the new stuff can take advantage until they get a heavier load and then it suffers until they update the back-haul.
Besides, even though XDA is a technology forum site, it's the General and Q&A subforums like this that make it so people are allowed to have a conversation like this, of which I'm grateful. It could get pretty boring just being limited to just talking about ROMs.
uhh?
if this thread is cause of LATELY my G2 Speeds just got LOW AS HEK,than I'm in them 'Complaints".
for some reason out of nowhere, my speeds have gotten super low...like EDGE speeds. I have 4g icon/H icon and it still running like its on edge.
Market apps downloads takes up to 30 minutes to finish and it only works good on wi-fi.
I've changed my ROMS,KERNELS, & Radios and still LOW SPEEDS.
This has bin goin' on for about..a week and a half now..
anyone else experiencing massive low speeds?
Thanks.

But I have no choice and have to keep using it cause I have one of those very old low price family plan that are no longer offered to new customer.

I'm getting 2mb/1.4mb in the Anaheim, CA area, close to disneyland (i'm on vacation) and I currently have about 5.5GBs transferred for the month.
I will update again when I get home in a few days. (Portland, OR) I have been getting about 9mb/5mb there on a regular basis.
And for those of you who are having really slow 4G speeds, you might be getting throttled by tmobile for too much data usage.

HTC one x & some serious data speed problems

Hi,
I have looked everywhere for a solution with no luck
I just bought a htc one x from Singapore unlocked and unbranded, i live in Australia and i am having really slow data speeds on telstra next g.
Phone calls and txts are great, but speed tests are terrible! My latest results are
DL: 0.28kps UL 0.38kps to my nearest server.
So im just asking if there is any hope to rectify this problem like a different radio or rom, anything really.?
thanks guys
What is your WiFi speed like?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Have you checked your APN settings?
my wifi speed is super fast, as fast as my desktop speeds,
i have set my apn settings to the recommended telstra settings an everything works just data is slow.
i spoke to HTC and they said that the IMEI number was suited to India, and that there was no way to fix this. I even mentioned flashing the radio and he said it was hardware specific so software couldn't change it.
Is he lying??
Here is a helpful link for telstra phones. I know your phone isnt 4G but it cant help to have a look at the article.
It says to change your APN to telstra.internet.
Have a look at your to see if it says telstra.datapack
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/05/how-to-get-an-overseas-4g-phone-working-on-telstras-4g-network/
(Most recent result) I'm gettting 9.97Mbps down and 1.01Mbps upload over Telstra Next G in Melbourne. Fastest 3G mobile I've ever seen.
Your area is either very congested or your antenna on the inside of the phone is loose. Try testing around midnight when things are quiet and let us know...

Thanks for your results proves that it is possible to have this hand set working on Telstra with blazing speeds,
I have tested at all hours of the day and its speed are consistently slow. last night at 11pm i tested it and got the exact thing i got at 4pm earlier that day.
My apn settings are exactly what it should be, is my baseband firmware different to you guys or anything? i am on 1.1204.103.14.
i tested my phone at midnight and the fastest i got was 0.79 dl and 0.91 upload.
i have ordered a new one x from mobi city and im returning the one from ebay due to some screen defects as well.

I hope that resolved it for you. I will note that I have been 'Speed Testing' Telstra for a couple of years now, and sometimes I do see results that are as bad as yours. My most recent test on my HOX got me results that bad! But mostly mine are very good. If you are consistently getting results that bad then I would suggest your handset may be faulty.
p.s. Try flashing a custom ROM that allows you to disable 'Fast Dormancy'. LeeDroid and Team Pkmn are two that come to mind.
p.p.s. I also found that using any AOSP ROM's such as Trip's CM9, that data speeds were terrible, consistently. The only ones I can get good speed with are HTC (custom and stock) ROM's. In fact I think better to be custom with regards to my point above about Fast Dormancy.
thanks for advise guys.
In the end i sent back the phone and ordered a replacement which works great! no defects yay. network speed is around 5-8mbdl and 500kps-3mb ul.
so it was just a dud phone that was holding me back.
now its time to flash some roms!
im having data speed problems on att. im getting like .3 down and like 1 up. i got the apn settings off android police. im running cleanrom 3.1 standard. yes i have the one x i just havnt changed my signature

Most AT&T data speed issues are from the plan provisioned in your account not being mapped correctly to the SIM and/or APN's you're using. If you're on a MEdia Net or data for Non-Smartphones plan you need to use the Cingular APN. If you're on a 4G plan you need to use the "Phone" APN. You can do a search on XDA to find the respective settings. Some people in the SGS3 forum that were on the prepaid $50 unlimited plan had their data shut off a couple of days ago. If you're on that plan look up the thread on the international SGS3 forum. It's not the phone because I'm on the data for Non-Smartphones plan and am getting better data speeds than I did with my i9100. I didn't have to touch the settings. I popped the SIM in, the phone read the settings, and I was good to go.

Laptop gets 50mbps down, GN2 only 25?

So, not having run a speedtest on my laptop in a while, I actually thought my roommate was lying to me when he said we should be getting faster internet. Apparently he's not. Question being, with the speeds people are pulling on LTE, why can't I pull the same speeds from my wifi on my laptop as my GN2? My laptop is getting 50mbps down, while my Note tops out around 25mbps although yesterday I pulled a couple over 30mbps which has never happened before. Can anyone explain why I'm topping out like that when so much more is capable?
It can be a number of factors, buildings , wind , weather, static interference, anything could be a factor. It won't always be consistent.

Those factors have nothing to do with wifi or why my phone wont go over 25mbps when it can go way higher than that.
It could be the type of wifi antenna that we have on the phone. Max speed is achieved using MIMO streams which required multiple wifi antennas. I suspect that GN2 wifi have only one antenna, one stream up or down.

Just seems odd that it maxes out at that speed on wifi yet with LTe its capable of double that. Does anyone else get more than 25mbps on their wifi?
Mobile app might not use as much data. Not as much time to optimize the connection and really fly.
The pc site may be allowed more bandwidth to get a speedy connection with.
My two cents.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
LTE and wifi are not using the same antenna. MINO is the basic for wifi (N) to achieve higher speed. If you go out and by wireless adaptor. Usually there 2 type of Wifi (N) offer 150N and 300N. The 150N has only one attenna, and the 300N usually has at least 2 or more.
So... still curious, what are others getting on their home wifi?

When I look at the network in the task manager on windows I believe its actually like 130? Im at work now, have to check when I get home? Is that the correct way to find out?
computer - 32
phone - 27
At home I have 40/20MB and on my phone I get 38/19 at work I have 100/100MB and on my phone I get 85/80MB.

So my link speed right now is actually 144 mbps, though during busy times it might go down to 130. It definitely seems like we are supposed to have better internet because I remember a couple months ago it was only 72. Anyways, what exactly am I doing wrong? Shouldn't I be getting even better than 50mbps on my laptop, at least? Also, my router came from Comcast, do I need to upgrade it to get the full effect or are my laptop and phone somehow limited? At home I'm getting better than 50 on my laptop so shouldn't I be getting 35 or 40 then, no problem, on my Note? It would be aggravating if Comcast was charging me for faster internet but not telling me I needed a new modem to take advantage of it. Actually, more like stupid than aggravating.

Yes you will always loose some throughput over wireless unless you have a beast of a router but plugged in with the hardwire should give you full speed. I would test by hard wiring to the router with your laptop and running a speed test then hard wire to the modem and do a speed test. If both router and modem are the same. Then its a wireless issue.

Well, I'm obviously not going to hardwire my laptop or Note. Would simply spending 50 bucks on a router from best buy, also avoiding a rental fee from comcast, improve my optimal speeds for my laptop and N2?

That's just to trouble shoot if it is your router or modem that is bad so you don't buy a new one when that was not the problem.

Well it's just the normal router that comcast gave us but I believe this was actually the second time we've updated so couldn't it be possible our comcast issued router is outdated? I've never been able to get better on any public wifi. I've just always had this creeping feeling that my account is just old enough to be on a weird plan where I am throttled overall no matter where I'm at opposed to other people. I've just never been able to duplicate the speeds on any phone that other people in my same exact area have. Like I'm handicapped for some reason., I mean, I basically get the same speeds on my N2 that I got on my Sensation, if not lower sometimes, and that just makes no damn sense whatsover. Don't we have a kikass radio over the Sensation?

I'm seeing similar to what you're seeing. I just had Verizon replace my router with a new Actiontec MI424WR which has gigabit & 802.11n. I have FiOS 50/25.
On a laptop running Windows 7 with an Intel 6300n wireless adapter one room away from the router I get 48-55 down. Sitting next to the laptop with the GN2 running ParanoidAndroid 3.15 with the LTE updated modem I get no more than 20 down. If I hold the phone 12 inches from the router in the other room, my Speedtest result hits as high as 33 down. If I take the laptop into the room and run the test next to the router, I consistently see 58 down.
Edit: Prior to getting my router replaced, I had the old Actiontec with 802.11g and if I recall, the laptop & GN2 both got around 12-15 down. Never better. Replacing the router made a huge difference but the laptop saw a high max down.

Does it say LTE? It could just be that att sucks were you are. For it it will say I have LTE but my speeds will be just as slow. Its a network issue not necessarily a phone issue.

It says 4g LTE in the status bar. I've had ATT service before on an HTC one X where I could fetch 8-12 mbps. The support lady was very nice and said something about maintenance and other calls but I was unsure if maybe it was an isolated issue or not.
LG G3 on AT&T slow data connections
I have the same issue. My phone is about 1 month old, previously I had a Blackberry Z30 Unlocked and connection was way better, even with 2 bars I could use Pandora all day at work and could connect to apps, and websites. Now on LG G3 even Google Play won't connect many times as it times out because connection is too slow. I think there is an issue with the way LG G3 connects to AT&T, I mean how can an unsupported device like Blackberry Z30 (bought it on Blackberry site as AT&T doesn't sell it) work very well and yet LG G3, sold by AT&T doesn't work well.
PS : I get 4G and some occasional LTE, but still speed is pretty slow and device consumes the battery pretty quickly.

That is decent, was that the end result though or a fluctuation within the test? I can see that it's not actually completed.
If that's legit then that's superb mate, not doubting you but i'm on EE myself and i live in central london, most i've had really is around 80 which to be fair is pretty amazing considering 0.5mb broadband used to cost £40 not long ago.
