8.4 Lags/Temporary freezes? - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

Just got the 8.4 and after installing my apps (including Nova Launcher and using that as the main launcher), I get constant lags and temporary freezes when trying to work within an app or move to a new app. Eventually it un-freezes itself buts it's pretty frustrating. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a setting that could be causing this? Maybe just a bad unit? Any help-suggestions would be appreciated. I have 9+ gb available after my apps are installed.
Thanks,

I heard about some problems with launchers, but this was CM11 rom related. Latest builds fix it up, so i have no problem now. If i'll switch to stock rom, i'll test it and let you know. Maybe you must wait for official update if you want to use Nova launcher.

[Q] recently having issues with launcher on CM7?

As of recently I have been having some issues with Launcher (stock gingerbread from the market) being laggy and/or freezing and sometimes my Widgets (calwidget and fancy widget pro) displaying the "problem loading widget" message. Has anybody else experienced this? I am going to try reinstalling the launcher for now but would like to know if there is another fix I need to do.
Also, I don't know if its related but my phone has rebooted on its own a handful of times in the past two or three weeks. Anyone else have issues? I'm not running a nightly version of the rom.

[Q] Scrolling lag for some apps.

Hi guys I have lag while scrolling up and down in some apps and I want to know if there is a fix for this annoying thing.
I've tried a lot of custom rom (samsung based) and kernel so I think is not this the problem. I installed the App seeders too, but nothing.
No lag for contacts, gallery, menu, etc... Only for this apps:
-facebook
-tapatalk
-ebay
-amazon
If there is someone else who have my problem please post here. So I understand is not my own problem.
I'm aloooooone...

i have one. its the stock messaging app from official samsung ROM. this happened after i flashed the official 4.1.2 from France DLL4, since i cannot wait for the OTA updates. i'm from PH btw.
anyone having the same problem after updating to 4.1.2?
Try scrolling cache. It's an option in omega, but I'm not sure if anyone posted it as a standalone mod on xda yet.

Its not matter of ram, its just correct optimization from specific apps developers for our big screen

Its not the matter of big screen also. I have sgr it lags in it also though i m using cm 10.1 in it with projet butter and i have seen s2 also it lags the size of the doesn't matters at all.
So we had to wait upgrade for the applications.
Apple store in this is better than play store. At The moment.
I hope that in the future this will exchange.
But apple had only 3 device to follow. Android have a lot of device to set. This is the problem.
There are seemingly MANY unoptimized apps. The one that sticks out like a sore thumb is WhatsApp which, without fail, will stutter when scrolling through my chat list.

[Q][BUG]All my home launchers are belong to Samsung?[solved]

Ok I'm getting tired of this 'feature, bug' whatever someone might call it. I haven't seen anyone else complain of it but I dont use TW for launcher and every time i reboot or power cycle i get asked to choose a launcher again. Then get helpfully told to clear defaults (as if I didn't know already) there's none to be cleared and fixing permissions does nothing, reimaging the unit does nothing so far.
Is Samsung saying they know what is best for me? Is anyone else getting this problem?

I think it might be Action launcher in this case, gotta contact dev. Possibly solved

hi
well to give a pointer , i am on stock rom , with nova launcher.
i have no problems when rebooting .( it reboots to nova launcher )
so i do no think it's a Samsung "bug " or whatever.
you could be right thats it a 3 rd party app..eg.. Action launcher, ?
(as you claim/stated.)
Why don't you "test " it with another launcher.. eg Apex/Nova.. etc?
good luck
Solved. Was a bug in Action Launcher. Dev well on the way to fixing. Thx for response

Lag when lunching apps?

Has anyone noticed a 2 to 3 second lag when launching an app?
No, not at all. I don't know of any other solution then preforming a full wipe and restoring either a fresh stock image or a custom rom. That way you definitely know any wrong settings/abusive apps are gone.
Are you only noticing in certain apps? Have you modified in any way?
I would suggest ditching the LG Launcher and trying Google Now Launcher/Nova or Apex or something of that type. I did that on mine and it seems a lot more responsive.
Let me know if you need any more help.

The other option worth trying is to go to Developers option and set the animation to 0.5x and see if that made any difference.
I notice it with the stock messaging app, there is a good 2/3 second lag before it launches. Really annoying. Perhaps it could be to do with increased DPI at a guess?

Stock messaging app is slow to open as can be when opened up initially. Subsequent runs are okay.
For this reason I switched to another messaging app (Textra in this case).
thanks for all the replies.
i'm already running Nova and always turn down animations to .5x after I get a new phone
strange that nobody else is experiencing the same issue

Issues with Note 4

I've had my note 4 for a couple weeks now, and I have to say that the phone is not as powerful as I expected. Whenever I run a resource heavy app, the phone experiences severe lag after exiting the app. For instance, the Caustic app, which is a music mixing app, runs descent on my note 4 but after exiting the app the launcher becomes very stuttery and laggy. I loaded the phone up with Nova launcher prime, and it does work better, yet still lags. I have clean master installed, and I've gotton notifications from it a couple times telling me the RAM is above 80% and the CPU is hot.. I've always been under the impression that clearing processes from RAM on Android is a no no, but as a last ditch effort, I went ahead and did it anyway. Over all, I'm not happy with the phone performance. My 2013 nexus 7 performes better, and this is supposed to be a beefier device as far as hardware is concerned.. Should I take the phone back to AT&T?

What other apps have you seen this with?
As I have not used caustic I cannot say if it does the same.
Is that app caustic 3?

Yes, the app that's causing me the lag is caustic 3. The only other app that had caused the same stutter is Fit Brains Trainer by roseta stone.. Are you having problems too?

So I tried caustic not sure how long but it does lag the launcher after exiting. (nova launcher)
Also after reboot every thing is running smoothly again and started caustic again and it does not lag after exiting ~5mins of running (maybe I didn't leave it running as long or what not I'm not sure but that's all I can observe so far)
Hope that helps you a bit.
This is exactly why we need the ability to flash custom roms on Samsung devices. The out-of-the-box experience sucks. The phone performs night and day on a custom rom.

Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it. My girlfriend has an AT&T Note 4 as well. I loaded hers up with the caustic app, and had the same laggy results. Yea, sometimes after exiting the app, the lag is so bad I have to reboot, other times a simple screen lock and unlock takes care of it, and other times there is no lag at all. When I was using the touch wiz launcher it caused lag everytime.. Nova launcher is working much better, but still not satisfactory..IMO, if I have what is considered to be one of, if not the most powerful smartphone currently, I shouldn't be dealing with this at all.. I think after this phone I'll stick with nexus devices.. Even though I said the same thing after my Galaxy S4, and somehow got sucked into the hype on this phone..

I think it's probably just Samsung bloatware interfering with phone function.
Personally I don't think it is a deal breaker just keep an eye out for those apps it may not be 100% compatible with our phones.
You may want to report the issue to the developer of Caustic. It could just be a software glitch isolated to this phone.
I personally haven't had the chance to see this phone lag at all and I definitely use it very heavily.

Do you use a cleaner app? I use clean master, and about once or twice a day I get a notification from clean master telling me the phone is preforming poorly, and ram is over %80. This usually occurs when I have a few apps open, and I usually do experience minor lag leading up to this. I allow clean master to wipe the ram, then reboot the phone and all is well for a while. This is very discouraging..

While a bit counterintuitive to what we have been seeing on windows etc.
This phone is designed to use all of its ram.
It should not lag while doing it and apps that causes it to lag is probably dev error so make note of those apps and keep an eye out for it.
Ram is not being used unnecessarily android purposely stores cached in ram to allow it to load faster.
It is not the app's fault. I made a thread about this same exact behavior a couple weeks ago but not a single person responded. Jittery, laggy performance after exiting a game or other graphics intensive app. Only thing that would get rid of it was a reboot.
I got a PM from Samsung Support about it though which surprised me. I think they may be aware of some type of issue.
It happened for me after two different apps closing so it's not your app. And it doesn't happen after every closing either. The jittery behavior is not limited to the launcher either. Next time it happens open another app and scroll, like the browser. It was terribly choppy.
The good news is Samsung reached out to me which is always a positive sign for fixes.

Yea, definitely not the apps fault. I've confirmed this by installing the same app on my Nexus 7 and Galaxy S4; the app runs fine on those two devices without any lag as a result. It may be compatability issues with the newer qualcom chip, or possibly all of the bloatware on the phone weighing things down. These ideas are all speculation on my part. It's good to hear that Samsung is aware of the issue. Please keep us posted on anything new in regards to the issue. Just an FYI, I've replaced Nova Launcher with the Google now launcher, and for the last 3 days the phone has been running remarkably smoother. Hopefully lollipop will fix these issues.. Root would definitely be nice.

If I get any updates I'll make sure to inform you all. I'm using Nova and it seems pretty fast. Were you having issues with it that made you switch to Google? Or is Google Launcher just that much better?

I was having some minor issues with Nova Launcher. I was getting random crashes, where Nova itself was actually crashing, which was a first for me. I was also getting some lag while scrolling, opening and closing apps. When I use Nova Launcher, I tweak allot of the settings, so that may have had something to do with it, but I've used Nova Launcher for the last year and a half on my Galaxy S4 w/o any problems.. Google now launcher doesn't have any options for customization of any kind, but it has been very smooth and effective.
