[Q] Which Model(s) Should I Buy Out of Contract for Unlocked use with AT&T - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I have decided (if it is inexpensive enough) to purchase a Note 4 off-contract for use with AT&T.
My question is: which models are compatible with AT&T, in all respects. I don't want to sacrifice legitimate LTE connectivity, and I've read elsewhere that some of the factory-unlocked models don't play well with AT&T's LTE network, depending on where you live.
Obviously, my motivation for going this route is to get around the ongoing battle of AT&T locking the bootloaders on all of their Samsung devices, and given that I've had my S4 for 2 years with no unlock in sight...I'm never ever willing to go through 2 years of having a locked bootloader again.

Check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2962920 as the T-Mobile appears to have all the necessary bands needed for use on ATT.

It certainly doesn't have ALL the necessary bands, but you could argue that it has enough of them

T-Mobile
I have the T-mobile version and AT&T version of the Note 4. The T-mobile version works as good or the same compared to the at&t phone. The only issue i had was a few calls to at&t to stop them from seeing it as a blackberry. once that was fixed I've had zero issues whatsoever. Your mileage might vary depending upon what bands your area uses. If i had to do it again, i would most defiantly only buy the T-mobile version of the Note 4. My AT&T version is just a spare $852 paperweight sitting in the drawer due to the locked bootloader. Not to mention the T-Mobile version is $100 less on costs. Oh well i guess i have a spare screen just in case.

I would think the att version would be cheaper than T-Mobile because T-Mobile has unlocked bootloader. Why do you need unlocked boot loader? For Roms?

AT&T version is way more expensive on full price.
Unlocked bootloader for full root, kernel, twrp, rom support.

Ahh. No need to buy from carrier. Bought from another site and att let me add insurance on it. Plus note 5 around the corner so maybe wait and get tmobile one from carrier even cheaper

Maybe. I'm using square trade for warranty. It's $5 month with a deductible of only $75. But yup. I have AT&T version and T-Mobile phone. I bought both on payments.

I like square trade and would recommend it but it doesn't cover stolen/lost phones. And they always have a good deal like $100 for 2 year warranty.

vs.
Spec wise both phones are identical
the only real difference is that one has the t-mobile & Samsung logo in the front, and the other only has the Samsung logo
the tmo version also has a tmo customized boot animation, the telus version is plain samsung boot animation
tmo verison has extra tmo broadware apps, the telus version has only one extra broatware (Groupon)
which would you go for?
will you pay the extra $ for the unbranded version?
The one with bloatware crap that might get WiFi calling at some point.
I like the telus one less branding and bigger space to press the capacitive buttons. The Bloat can be removed with root. I wonder when samsung going to drop source code for this phone. Sprint and At&t already versions already have source code slightly before phones come out. Android police and engadget have already reviewed the tmobile samsung galaxy 2.
Why not just wait on the HD version of the phone? Although I'm not sure when that will be out.

the HD version is not AWS compatible
Hmm well do you really want to pay $150 more for the branding because everything else will go away when rooted

wow, if it weren't for the galaxy note coming out, I would definitely get the T-mobile version.
Really good pricing
go with the Tmobil version!!
People are saying the battery life is the worst on the t-mobile galaxy 2. I think its all that badly programmed bloatware on that phone. Also the phone is taking in lte speeds which means the phone uses more power to pull in data. It shows to say lte is over hyped. I think the adreno 220 is overclocked in this phone as well.
Good thing you can usually turn 4g off...
root will be around fast enough ...hell if they can unlock a phone on this site before the actual compny that produces it can i think root will be attainable in no time. save the money and get the tmo version. you can always call tmobile and have it unlocked for free

But hspa+ is 3g so if you turn it off you get edge. Ironically edge speeds on tmobile are faster than at&t 3g speeds.

according to the Bestbuy Ad it is the i9250m or HSI925BR
Since it's for Bell and Virigin in Canada, it can only possibly be the GSM/HSPA+ version. The CDMA/LTE model is specific to Verizon and won't work for anyone else.
i can almost bet damn Bell will not sell those phones without a contract like Telus / Rogers did with launch phones
Yep... no chance you'll get it off contract, pretty sure of that lol.

Hopefully some Canadian friends will find out for us if this thing has microSD slot, because Samsung Ca website list that it does, but BestBuy Ca website doesn't say so.
I just got back from bell and put my $50.00 deposit and yes there are selling the phone outright. $649.00 and it's 16gb..
Does anybody know if the Canada version will have Tmobile USA 3G/4G bands? I'm thinking it may be cheaper overall to buy the Canada version then it would the UK/International version.

Base on Samsung and BestBuy Canadian site, it do support the 1700 and 2100 HSPA bands.

I'm using the phone right now. There's no external memory slots.
I talked to Bell about 2 days ago, you have to be already a Bell customer or a new customer on a new contract, to buy. They will not sell outright at least for the first month of sales.

this was expected, it'd have been real cool if it did include it though
I'm planning on buying on Thursday and using my Telus SIM. I don't mind buying a 30 Day for $30 to get it a month early. I'm already paying $649.99 plus taxes for the phone. What's $30 after that?
What I am hearing is some confusion as to whether Bell is locking the phones. I thought that was just them assuming, until I heard that some UK carriers had locked them too. Has anyone heard anything definite about locked/unlocked?
I'm gonna guess they'll be unlocked but I have no solid information, just using the Nexus S last year as a proxy (was never sold locked in Canada despite what the carriers said).
Also it might be easier to get it from Virgin Mobile if you want to just buy it outright, which is what I'll try - their supertab or whatever dumb thing they call it then just cancel immediately after.
why cant verizon make ad like that and post it on their website ughhh i am getting sick of verizon
i wouldn't be worried about the SIM lock
you can always go online to have it unlocked
heck even just across the street inside Eaton Center lower level there's a cell phone kiosk there that does unlocking
I hope that's not the case. I'd much rather get it from Canada than from across the pond.
They won't be locked.
If you buy if from Futureshop or Best Buy you will be able to buy it outright. If you go to a Bell store they won't let you buy it without signing up for at least one month of service.
Not according to this...

Probably another 35 or so for "activation fee" if you do that. I think they only waive the fee for new contracts.

Is the Verizon branded HTC 10 Unlocked?

I canceled my unlocked pre order that i was going to use on my AT&T account when they told me end of May early June before it ships. I was wondering is the Verizon branded one fully functional out the box for att like a lot of their other phones are? If so just gonna go in and buy one for 648
I don't think it is. The T-Mobile one probably is, though.

It indeed is unlocked. I have access to a cricket sim. I put the sim in, the phone informed me that it wasn't a verizon sim. I cleared the message, entered the cricket apn and indeed it worked. I am able to place phone calls and surf the web. Signal is HSPA, so maybe the radios are different???

IT is sim unlocked, but you will be limited using it on GSM networks, some features will behave wonky, and it will be missing some bands. Buy an unlocked one.
As far as teh bootloader.........maybe soon

Z2 force T-mobile on AT&T

There are some surprisingly good deals for the Moto Z2 force on Swappa, but only for the T-mobile edition. My carrier is AT&T. Will the phone work with just an AT&T SIM?
Speaking from experience only... I always buy Verizon at best buy for full price... When I sold my s8 to a co-worker his at&t sim worked 100%. Now my sim is attached to a buisnesss account so that might help in the unlocking process but I'm pretty sure all Verizon phones are sim unlocked.
I don't think others like at&t/TMobile have easy ways to unlock the sim... It's doable but prbly a hassle

It will work but be prepared for a fight to get it unlocked. Best way to think about it is to add $110 to whatever the price of the phone is. You will have to activate a T-Mobile prepaid account, add over $100, request an unlock, wait AT LEAST 4 days then pray your request is granted.
I recently went through this exact process and from the time I bought the phone to the time it was SIM Unlocked took just under two weeks. Because I purchased the phone from a third party and it didn't show up in TMobile's system it was not eligible for an unlock.
I spent literally hours on the phone with customer service from both T-Mobile and Motorola, to no avail. I tried third party unlock sites which also didn't work. Finally a member here recommended contacting T-Mobile via Twitter. This was by far the most helpful anyone had been and I was able to get the phone unlocked.
After I went through all of this trouble I still ended up selling the phone. There was nothing wrong with it, the gray just wasn't my thing and I wanted the black one. After SIM and bootloader unlocking it I was able to break even and I'm using the T-Mobile SIM in an old phone as a hotspot exclusively to game on.
Truly the best deal on a z2 force right now is to start a new line with Sprint at Best buy. I'm paying $16.34/month for 24 months with $0 down payment. That works out to $392 total. At that price this is absolutely the best phone for the money.
I've read all of the people who are unhappy with Sprint and say they have terrible reception but where I'm at (Midwest) I have had 4-5 bars of LTE all the time. That's better than Att.
What I will have to agree on is the slower network speeds. It's not a HUGE difference like some people say but it is noticable. Personally I'll gladly take a slightly slower but more reliable connection and save $40 bucks a month.

Thanks for the feedback. This is exactly what I was afraid of. I can't switch to a different network. Both my wife and daughter have grandfathered unlimited iPhone accounts with AT&T as well as a healthy corporate discount, and financially the switch to any other carrier makes no sense. My Nexus 6p died last night and I have been debating between the Pixel XL, Oneplus 5, and Z2 force.

I understand that. I've been on Att since 2007. It still feels weird seeing Sprint in the status bar and boot screen. However, buying this phone from Att is a huge rip off. They're charging OVER msrp and the bootloader is locked down.
If I were in your shoes I'd look into this: https://www.phonearena.com/news/Goo...h-Pixel-XLs-but-only-in-North-America_id98059
After dropping and cracking my old Sony Xperia I am all about that shattershield screen. The only other thing close to that with modern specs is the s8 active and that's an Att exclusive, feels cheap, looks awful and cost more than Att's z2! I hate using cases but in my line of work I need durable equipment. If I were smart I'd be using a $20 flip phone but I've been using a smartphone since windows mobile, Palm and blackberry were all still relevant (or even around)

The OEM UNLOCK appears but all of the usual unlock proccedure produces no Bootloader Unlock when it resets.
