difference between bootloader and SIMlock

Hello all,
I just got an AT&T HTC one X (first smartphone in my life), rooted the phone and unlocked the bootloader by following the tutorial posted on XDA and official HTC bootloader-locking website. (Hail grankin01!) I am pretty sure that my HTC is unlocked (UNLOCK was shown on bootloader).
When I plugged in my SIM card, which was from T-mobile USA, I was asked to enter 8-digit network PIN number. I was confused and started to google related information and found no tutorial regarding how to unlock SIMLock. (It seems I need to provide IMEI and purchase from phone-hacking website.)
I have no intention to ask how to break SIMlock or PIN number but eagerly want to know the background and difference between bootloader(hardlock?) and SIMlock.
I am very new in the area of Andriod development and smartphone (touch-screen phone), the terminologies or concept I used above could be flawed and make no sense. I will be very appreciate if someone corrects me or posts related information.

Bootloader is only for for changing roms, not SIM

A boot loader unlock means you can flash custom ROMs and recoveries
Sim unlock is so you can inserts different providers sim
You can usually get your sim unlock code free by ringing your provider and telling them you are going abroad and would like to use an international sim whilst away

hi all in having problem with my htc one x
its a uk phone . keeps saying no service was on orange i didn't have a orange sim so i unlocked it via a code .
what ever sims goes in it it says no service it hasn't had any thing do to it ie bootloader or custom rom .
if i go to network and search says "error while searching for network"
any help would be great its not blocked i checked that with checkmend

f i root and flash my HTC desire 816 virgin mobile with CM would that allow me to use a different sim on the device ?
i also have the unlock code for the IMEI but i can't enter it as the look menu doesn't pop up . It just says "Invalid sim card"(4g services are unavailable as the SIM/UICC is invalid)
i bought the phone in USA while i was on transit, i tried to use the original sim that was inside of it "sprint" but there is no signal of US providers here (((

Probably won't work. VM USA/Sprint is CDMA and most likely your country is GSM. I think you need a version with working dual SIM slots.

Help HTC DESIRE 816V China Unicom

I have a HTC Desire 816v China Unicom. I am using the phone in India and in SIM Slot 1 i have inserted a CDMA Sim and i cannot receive any SMS or Send any SMS i have already unlocked the SIM from forum.xda-developers.com/desire-816/.../unlocking-htc-desire-816v-cd... I Also cannot change the network settings from 4g LTE to 3g. I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone currently the bootloader says unlocked and S=Of. Can anyone help me out here ? is there any Rom which will help me use the CDMA Sim Slot ?.
P.S in the bootloader the version is A5_DWGL

Hi , I just get a t-mobile HTC g2 as a gift , and after I factory reset it and I got a problem , I insert a new sim card and it request a sim network code !! And I had sent a message to T-Mobile too but they need me to get the phone owners to contact them to get the code !! If I root the phone and flash a new room , will it Fox my problem ??

Yes it should

Flashing a new rom will fix the probem because the network lock on android devices is firmware based. Some sites on the internet provide these codes, tough.
