Zenfone 2 or Zenfone 2 Laser.... - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

...that is the question.
The ZF2 has devflow poppin' while the ZF2L seems....stagnant?..?.?.. Maybe, I'm wrong, and development is just slow going atm, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S4, so I'm spoiled on choice. There wasn't anything that couldn't be done on that phone....
Anyway, I was hoping to hear from you ZF2 users about whether or not you think the ZF2L is worth the gamble over the ZF2.

I came from the S5 to the ZF2 and I love it. It is an amazing phone, with lots of potential. The only difference between the 2 device that I know is the specs. The ZF2 has a little more going for it than the laser. And do to is just coming out the ZF2L development will be slow until there is more of request and crowd wanting it.
But I do recommend getting the ZF2 4 gig version. Hope I was helpful

I am coming from a Nexus 6 and bit the bullet on a 4GB ZF2 today. I got all the accessories I could and paid $360. (Headphone, anti-scratch screen protector, and black case). I watched every major review I could and honestly it only made me want it more. I might do blisspop moment I get it since I love vanilla android with good specs.

Could you point me to which one you bought? The lineup seems confusing with the Zenfone2. Some with intel while some others with qualcomm.
Any pros and cons of them? Which one has more stable custom roms available here?

Here is the one I purchased. https://www.asus.com/us/Phone/ZenFone_2_ZE551ML/
I purchased the 2.3GHz with 4GB DDR3 ram. Only true overcome between this and the laser is one uses the intel chip (zenfone 2) and laser uses qualcomm. One has 4GB of ram and the other 3gb. Stable roms? I saw the ZF2 had more of a movement than laser. I watched review after review video before buying.

Went for the OnePlus One
Since the latest information regarding the Zenfone 2 was suggesting the $199 price tag would be for the 5" 720p device, I decided to order the OnePlus One instead.
It might be that the the 5.5" 1080p model ends up costing $199, but in Belgium (where I live), I suspected it will be more expensive.
The OnePlus one has been out for quite a while now, reviews are super positive. A LOT of development is going on for it, whereas the Zenfone 2 will be brand new in March (?), no reviews at all exist about this phone (will it be any good?) and development will start slow.
Also (correct me if I'm wrong), it would take some work to port CM to the Intel x86 platform whereas the OPO runs CM natively.
I ended up paying $356 for the OPO incl shipping, which seems reasonable. If the Zenfone 2 5.5" 1080p edition with 2GB of ram ends up costing $199, it would be a super deal, but I doubt it...

but i have recently heard that cyanogen is not supporting opo anymore and they are working on their own os namely oxygen os.....
but if we look at the price point i think 4gb version of zenfone 2 will be available at 350$ or may be less than that...
well it can't predicted which device is much better...
well i will wait one week after the release of zenfone 2 and wait for the review of other people ...

and about development i think xda have amazing devs i think anyone of the developer will definitely help asus users to get cm....

True. Another reason for buying the OPO now is that I really needed another phone as my current one is just too slow for daily use now. If I had time I probably would wait for the Zenfone 2 to come out, wait for reviews/opinions. If you have lots of time to wait, you can wait for the OnePlus 2 (Q3 I think) too.

You will regret the OPO if you are even a minor perfectionist, and the display quality is important to you. I went through 5 of them because I wanted to love it, but all 5 had terrible yellowish bottoms of the screen.

Yes, on all 5, and some worse than others. Maybe it has something to do with my retina cones!!
Are you using the on screen navigation keys? If so it makes it much less noticeable. Try turning them off, and brightness up and use hangouts or an app with a white background. Or better yet, don't even look for it and it will never bother you.
I was almost set on a OnePlus One, but I spent the day reading about the Zenfone 2, and now I'm quite intrigued by it. I have a few questions that I hope I can receive some advice on.
1. Purely in terms of performance, how does this particular Intel chip fare against the Snapdragon 801 in the OnePlus One?
2. I keep reading comments about supposed poor battery life on Intel Atom processors, compared to the Snapdragons. Are there any concrete facts concerning this? Or is it just generally assumed that the Intel Atoms translate to poor battery life?
3. I'm concerned about the aspect of software updates and custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2. Asus apparently aren't particularly quick with OS updates, and I'm worried that the Zenfone might end up not receiving as many as something like the OnePlus One. I'd also want the option to try an alternative ROM or two, say CM, in the event I don't like Asus' factory ROM (a lot of people don't seem to like it). Do you guys think the Zenfone 2 will be restricted in that sense, being an Intel architecture as opposed to ARM?

Moorefield in the Zenfone 2 smokes the 801 and is more on par with 805. Battery shouldn't be an issue as the new Intel processors are built on 22nm FinFET vs the older 32nm planar. FinFET is what Samsung and TSMC are supposedly releasing this year with the new Samsung Exynos built on what is equivalent to 20 nm FinFET but they are calling 14nm. Anything that reads z2xxx are the older processors which I don't even know why Asus is using. The new processors are z3xxx model numbers. I had a Dell Venue 8 pro with the new Intel chip running full windows and the battery life was comparable to my iPad Air except it ran full windows
Actually it is Intel vs Snapdragon

[Q] 1+1 or ZF2

I am sitting here wondering if I should upgrade from the 1+1 to the rumored 128GB ZF2 when it releases.
Couple of questions though,
How is using a 128GB SDXC in the phone to those that use one?
Is the camera really THAT bad?
While I know that the bootloader is currently locked and nothing in the pipeline, so far, to show that it is going to even get CM when it does release. What is the stock rom like sans ASUS apps?
Given the history of ASUS flash in the Transformer models and the Nexus, does it seem like this one is going to have similar issues or have they solved that too with this phone?
Did anyone actually come from a 1+1 by chance? What are you thoughts in comparison to it and the ZF2.
Cheers

Camera works fine. It's better than the camera I have on the OPO when I first got that phone. I prefer the camera on the ZF2 at the moment for auto shots than my OPO with ColorOS and tweaks.

I think the stock Asus apps are a decent alternative if you want to stay away from Google apps for the most part. They do however seem redundant if you do use Google apps and services to some degree. There are some apps that are useless for the most part and should be uninstalled or disabled. I'm on a pre-rooted image and have some disabled but not all of them and my ram usage and performance are fine. Typically about 1GB of ram usage maybe 1.5GB. That's with over half still enabled and installed.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. All companies have horrible track records in my experience to a degree. Some are just better than others at this stretch of time or are new. No clue how Asus tablet/laptop will translate into phones. This will likely be the most popular mobile device they have ever had imo.

I own two OPO 64GB SS Blacks and a ZE551ML 64GB/4GB ZF2. OPO's are running CM12.1 nightlies and the other is on CM12S. My ZF2 is faster than my OPO phones on WiFi and installing in general. Data rates on TMO and ATT MVNO's (Cricket/Net10/TMO) also bench faster than the OPO's in my area. Gaming is another area where it just demolishes everything. I've put it up against multiple G3's a Nexus 4/5 (own a 4 still) an S6 Edge. If you do any sort of gaming on a mobile device this appears to be the cream of the crop so far. I'm still playing around with a bunch of emulators that folks have mentioned here on the forums. That seems to be hit or miss atm but should improve since most of it is ARM.
I was specially talking about the 128GB micro sdxc card in the slot. Any performance degradation?
I hated ColorOS and wasn't to fond of the progress that CM11s was making with the issues it had like battery drain and WiFi issues. I put CM11 then 12 and hadn't had any problems. Got any photos you can share using opo and zf2 in comparison?
I like slim ROMs. Minimal crapware installed and least amount of apps running and prefer Google apps over proprietary. Id be interested in seeing performance difference, especially battery, from fat stock to slim stock.
IIRC, the reason i didn't buy one, the flash storage on the android transformer was riddled with issues and slowed down drastically after prolonged use. I just hope its not the same here.
I game, a lot, on the OPO. Many are emulators too, epsxe specifically (FF7 & 9). Reason I bought it was for the ram and gaming benchmarks as well as the price was just crazy for the specs. I unfortunately got the yellow band on mine and since OPO support that is nonexistent, it kind of left a bad taste and steering me away from the OP2.
I really like the specs but it had been my experience that the stock ROMs that come on any phone that I have owned all sucked and had to be flashed to become worth its weight.
I am running a 128 gb sd without any problems

I generally lean towards ROMs like you describe. Nexus 4 favorite was Dirty Unicorns or SlimKat with Franco or some other kernel (boeffla? can't recall). I still prefer them to any Lollipop base I've run across. It might change in the future who knows.

I don't have prior experience with Asus products besides motherboards and other products for desktop PC or routers specifically. Routers like the N56U and 66U were one of the best routers you could have (I own multiple). Gaming is top notch on this phone. I'm not kidding when I say this thing handles better than even the most expensive Samsungs out today. Agree with you on stock experiences. This phone has pre-rooted images you can flash. Uninstall or disable anything you want. Custom ROM wise it won't be as fast as other communities because like the OPO which shares hardware with the G3 and many others there just isn't the like here. It would also help if Asus gets the sources out and makes sure we're unlocked .
Short response... If you are going for a OPO, you're going for a device that is over an year old! On the contrary Zenfone was released just a few months back.
There are many things you lose by purchasing an older device, which I am sure you have common sense to understand.
I switched from OPO mainly because I had the digitizer issues with touchscreen and OPO had tendency to heat up and throttle a lot and the heat would exacerbate the touch response issues.
If you're happy with your OPO and have no issues with it, why not wait to see what's released in fall with new Nexus phones before upgrading?

If you play mobile games or emulators then there would be an improvement over the OPO. If you don't then I would wait it out and see what gets released by this fall. It definitely games better than my OPO. G3 would be a sidegrade/upgrade even though it's near identical to an OPO. Screen is better has mSD support looks better and the camera is nice. I've seen plenty of nused G3's in the 300 range.

I'm planning to sell my old Z1C for a 5.5 inch Zenfone 2 (2gb)... Will it be worth it? How's overall performace on this? App compatibilities (the mobile Intel processor is foreign to me)? Official and dev support?

tbh? I'm sure the 2gb phone will be fine for most anything. I have yet to find any apps that don't work on my ZF2 & most Android apps are NOT going to use 2 gigs of ram.
Don't think you'll have any problem with the 2GB version. Is it the 1.8ghz or the 2.3ghz model? Again, it shouldn't make a huge difference - the two chips have identical architecture, the same base speed and the same gpu. The only difference is the higher spec one can turbo higher in bursts. There are some corners cut to sell a device as cheaply as the Zenfone range, but powerful performance isn't lacking, and though it is a low to mid-range device I believe you get more than you pay for and it punches above it's weight. I came from an iPhone 5 to my Zenfone ZE550ML and I love it.

I understand the ZF2's stance in the high-mid range of the market however I'm concerned whether the ZF2 will be a downgrade from my Z1C... I'm particularly hoping the ZF2 as similarly snappy and capable as my Z1C but with the advantages that come as a phone thats released this year as opposed to the 2013 Z1C.
Also the Z1C has an amazing camera that has served me well. How's the ZF2's camera?
Well, benchmarks suggest the Zenfone 2 has quite a big performance advantage over your Z1C, and most users on here will probably tell you that it is very smooth and snappy to use in real everyday usage too. The camera on the Zenfone has its detractors, but mostly they are comparing it to things like the Galaxy S6 or iPhones. It is not perfect by any means, but a capable camera given the price. All reviews I have read pretty much slate the Z1/Z1C's camera though, so you might find that the Zenfone's is at least on a par.

Loved my S3 but thinking of upgrading

Easy, lightweight, slides right into my pocket, light enough to run wth, fell multiple times without breaking (although against swimming pool cement it did last week after 2.5 years). Need a new phone, I am thinking of the Galaxy S5 active as Ican upgrade on ATT, but I am a little dissappointed by the fact that there doesn't seem to be newer battery technology, and the existing battery technology advanced have been mulled by what I see as increases in hardware and processing power, pixel density that aren't really needed on a mobile device.
What is a good upgrade phone as far as ergonomics, battery life, and original development/replacement battery/memory card from the Galaxy S3?
I am using the ZenFone 2 and so far loving it, great processor, 4gb ram, fast charging and a great price

The Zenfone 2 is bigger than the GS3 at 5.5" screen size, but most phones fall somewhere in the 5 - 5.5" bracket these days unless you're buying the mini variant. The Zenfone 2 is about 30% heavier too, but between the larger form factor and a battery that is about 1/3 larger than the S3 the extra weight is definitely accounted for with features.
I was afraid the Atom processor might hold back the Zenfone 2 development scene, but I just recently read that at least one of the Zenfone 2 variants now has a CM 12.1 alpha. That didn't take long, but time will tell how custom ROMs actually perform on the device vs. stock because we know Asus and Intel will never release the complete x86_64 code. The price point on them is great for the hardware you get. I've been thinking really hard about picking one up myself. However, my old reliable S3 is really still working just fine and running Android 5.1.1 thanks to all the hardworking devs. I just can't convince myself that it is time for a change.
If running a desktop OS on your phone appeals to you, the Intel processor in the Zenfone 2 lends itself pretty well to that apparently. This could be nice trick if you have to interface anything that absolutely requires Micro$oft like corporate/business stuff. If I ever pick one up I might make a run at something like this with a lightweight Linux distro like Porteus.
Very cool phone for the $.

How about battery life that is the biggest thing for me with the form factor

I haven't broke down and bought one yet, so I can't comment. Maybe go ask over in their forum.
I still have my eye on them. The zenfone 2 will probably still be my next purchase unless something more promising comes out between now and then. That's a beast of a phone for $200 - $300.
I'm on AT&T and their phones are a parade of locked down Samsung, LG, and Apple devices, and the AT&T Next thing that they push you towards is really just a payment plan if you do the math. They don't even really subsidize phones anymore. You'll come out way ahead by buying a zenfone 2 or maybe another cheap, used unlocked phone and adding it to their network, and you won't have to deal with their attempts to lock down your device. I'd defect entirely to Straight Talk or some other MVNO, but I haven't convinced the family that it's a good idea just yet.

Nah it's still pretty subsdizied especially if you can sell the upgraded phone two years down the line.
Hate to say it but a new phone in the same size category will be tough to fill as most screens are pretty large. Closest thing is probably the moto x, but it is older and you sacrifice removable battery. The LG G3 and G4 sorry removable batteries and had memory expansion but they are considerably larger.

Zenfone 2 or Zenfone 3?

Hello there,
So I'm undecided whether to wait a few months for the zenfone 3 or should I just get the zenfone 2. What do ye guys think ?

I'd like to have it now but is it worth waiting for ZF3?

But already have any news about ZF3? Processador, RAM, screen, etc? For a middle range product, and if i really need a smartphone right now i would buy it again. If is not urgent and you still can wait a few months, then just wait...

Yes and there can not come much more.
5 GB Ram? Higher Intel Quadcore? Higher GPU?
The Device is still up-to-date and worth to buy.
This is kind of a strange question as the reason you want to wait or not totally depends on your own needs.

Well I don't mind waiting but will it be worth the wait ?

Again, this is totally up to you.
Personally I like the device, but after some thought I'm on the waitlist for the Nexus 6p 128gb. If you must have a phone, and 2 to 300 is your price point, the ZenFone 2 is very decent. But the lack of 5.1 update, the uncertainty of when or if we get Marshmallow, and a few minor things have pushed me back into the Nexus camp(when the device is actually available to purchase). I will miss the dual SIM and micro expansion though.

You are right but his question is if it should buy it now or wait for a Zf3... Again, is a personal choice. If it comes with 8gb ram, 16 bit hexadecagon cpu, 256 memory, 4k screen, etc, etc, then yes, you should wait. But if you can wait probably have other choices instead Asus phones...
I think the ZF 3 will not come before the first quarter of 2016, so I'd look on ZF2

True, but at this point no one knows the specs of Zf3, except possibly type C USB. And depending on region, it most likely won't be released for 6 months or longer. Heck, most locations have not gotten access to ZenFlash yet. So while it is not a direct answer, I did indirectly answer his question.
And will it be called the Zenfone 3 or the Zenfone 2 II, or the Zenfone Squared?
