I want to make an app for my website but don't know where to start - Web App Development

Hi everyone! I'm new here and need a bit of help.
I run a news website, with daily articles and occasional reviews. The site is already responsive. I would like to develop a multiplatform app for it but I don't want something simple like those app generators.
Firstly, all I want is my latest articles to be pulled from an RSS feed and shown in the app. Later, I would like to allow readers to comment and post on my forum.
Now I don't want them to load the pages or use a browser. Everything should be done in the app and then stored on their devices (Like the Android Central app). I would like to start developing for Android first but have no idea how to start. I have some knowledge in HTML and CSS, would that help?
Thanks.

You can go for Phonegap

I like appery.io. It uses PhoneGap in the projects so they can be multiplatform. The projects are easily available and editable through webbrowser. Also testing the applications is super convenient :good:

Of course you need some programming skills for this, but they have some tutorials so you can learn as you build the application.

Is there a project management app on Android?

I'm unfortunately going to have to post this in a few places because I don't know where it's going to get the most exposure, but I'll start here because I have a Desire.
I need an app to manage the various projects that I have going on. In some ways, you can think of it as a todo application which has subtasks, projects/groups, action lists, sorting via time till due/time taken/project/importance etc.
If you have the time, check out this site where there guy goes through a number of options and criteria for a good GTD (getting things done) application.
I've tested:
OpenLoops
Astrid
Goals Todo
For starters, Astrid cannot sort by tag/project and non have sub-tasks.
I'm really hoping there is a project management app out there and someone can help me.

i use it also...
Is this purely an offline GTasks? (I couldn't really see much in the way of features.) If it is, GTasks is quite a basic todo manager, let alone project manager.
Projects feature for Astrid is currently in development. Don't expect it all that soon though.

Someone suggested Got To Do + Toodledo. Seems to have much going for it. Testing it out now.
ActionComplete?

Have you tested 'action complete'
Their website: http://actioncomplete.com/android
Review of it: http://www.androidtapp.com/actioncomplete/
It's free and was built around GTD system afaik. It allows for sorting and projects with 'actions' and 'waits' within them. Good luck
You might want to try Thymer.
It's online and I believe it's not free but they have a beta running for Android.
I'm also looking for something similar. My only real requirement is sub-tasks though.
Got To Do seems nice, but to get sub tasks you have to pay for a pro license for ToodleDo, after you pay for the app itself. I'm sure its not expensive, but still...
Action Complete doesn't seem to have sub tasks.
I've also checked out Astrid and OpenLoops.
I thought the whole idea of GTD was to break a task down into smaller sub-tasks so you can "get things done".
I think I was actually using ToodleDo on my iPhone, but I don't recall having to pay to get sub tasks. Perhaps that is new.
Any methodologies in mind? Any back end software like MS Project Server or open source PM apps / servers in mind? I.e. how far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

How far? Currently I don't need to intergrate with any MS software (or similar) though if it was offered and useful I wouldn't say no.
What I would like to have as a high priority are:
1. Ability to manage different projects (obviously).
2. Ability to plan projects - form project trees, some may have tasks, some may have notes, some may have links etc.
3. An online/desktop backup/sync. Simply because I hate the thought of all my information being in one place.
4. A UI that is easy to assess what is going on and what is coming up.
There are obviously other things required but it's difficult to list everything which is why I attached that site that pretty much lists most of them.
@Powder79, I just looked at Thymer. It looks a bit too basic but thanks for the suggestion.
Currently I'm trying out Toodledoo + Got To Do. It seems to have most but it really does suck for giving your tasks/actions a quick look to see the state (active/waiting/reference/etc). It just has date due and overdue.
If you imagine a bastard love child of Astrid (Android), Goals ToDo (Android), Toodledoo (online), Projekt (Symbian) and Mindmanager (desktop) then you will have my perfect project manager application.
Oh, and a desktop widget for easy viewing.
I don't ask for much obviously.
Project manager
Me too is looking for a good project manager.
Yet haven't found one that handles Values/Visions.
Values/vision is like a direction, it can't be completed. There should be mesure of how well one is living the value/vision.
And projects/goals to hold the direction.
And tasks to complete project. Yet, have only seen project at best.
Need, with overview:
Value1>Projects>Tasks
Value2>Projects>Tasks
Value3>Projects>Tasks
and so..
Sorry to bump up an old thread but anyone interested in a simple project management / to do list tool might like to take a look at my app: Organisa Lite. Its on Android Market currently. It offers some features I think some people might find useful - such as updating the android calendar with chosen dates and organising notes in a hierarchical manner. The user interface is unique too: you can minimise and maximise projects and sub-notes as required and manage everything from the one screen.
I'd like to make Organisa Lite completely free and add a Pro version with much more advanced features but I need some initial confirmation and support that it is what people want in the way of paid downloads.
Mobile Project Manager (MPM)
Have youbtried MPM (Mobile Project Manager)? It has unlimited subtasks, predecessor tasks, and allows importing and exporting to/from project management desktop software. Search MPM in the market.
try MPM
Try MPM if you haven't already
Project Management App on Android
I have been a user of Project Management App, "Project Planning Pro" on iOS for long. This award winning app has helped me significantly in my Project management needs.
However, the app is now available on Android platform & I have given it a try. It works like a breeze. Its a totally worthy app to have.
Best of Luck:good::good:

1800PocketPC.com WP7 App [Dev Thread] Need some help please. Pretty please.

So, Ive made the app for 1800PocketPC & thought I would make a thread about its development,
mostly because I need a bit of help from those with greater knowledge than me
Saijo (the owner of the site) has already made a thread about it over here CLICKY.
There is also a page on my website about it here: CLICKY
Features:
Displays the latest article from your chosen feed on the homepage.
Shows feeds from these different areas:
- News
- App Reviews
- Game Reviews
- General games news
- Free games news
- Xbox Live games news
Displays articles in a mobile friendly way.
Gives you the opportunity to contact the site or the developer (me).
Due to the youtube plugin not working in 3rd party apps, links to the
mobile youtube page are dynamically added to the menu.
The same applies to marketplace links, which would not open strait
from 3rd party apps, links are dynamically added to the menu instead.
You can view & add comments posted on any article.
There is landscape support throughout all but 1 part of the app.
You can also get achievements!
You can download the current version here:
Or you can like it on Facebook here CLICKY
Im currently working on the next major build, which will add:
Twitter & Facebook integration.
Overall UI improvements.
A better mobile reading experience.
Full portrait/landscape support.
Location based advertising off by default.
Now, what I need is help with at the moment is facebook & twitter.
I found a brilliant tut here & I transplanted some of the code from there, so It can now share articles to facebook.
My problems are these:
I don't know how to post to twitter.
I don't know how to get & display all posts from someone's facebook wall (namely the bestwp7games & 1800pocketpc pages)
I don't know how to get & display all posts from someone's twitter account :/
So yeah, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Google hath fail'd me
Being as polite as possible, you need to search. If you ask questions like "how do I ..." you're not really progressing as a developer, as the two services you mentioned have amazingly detailed and well-defined APIs.
I will point you to the kind of Google queries I use to find these answers, that way you can keep developing without wasting time waiting for other people to answer:
Twitter: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=update+twitter+status+c#
FB Wall Posts: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...ebook+wall+posts+c#&pbx=1&fp=b0dc1443d535784d
Recent Tweets: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=b0dc1443d535784d
Thanks. You're right, I probably should have searched more.
I was a bit afraid Id find something & try working with it only to find it didnt work with WindowsPhone :/

Is there a programing App/website out there for Non Programmers?

I've not seriously programmed since I was 10-12 years old and Peek'd/Poke'd my way through in BASIC on my C=64. I'm wanting to create an app to use on my phone and even release into Marketplace for others. It's a general Ballistics program. I've noticed there is nothing out there that I can find for the hobby or competitive shooter. If someone else wants to take up the challenge, please feel free. But, if not, I'd be willing to do one if I can find the programs to help with this. Also, does anyone have any books or other sites that will explain the programing languages needed to make a current (Mango) compatible app.
Thanks

I've spent all day looking at the attached document. It's a small tutorial on WP development.

[Q] Android artist resources

Other than seeing stuff that people have submitted on youtube or deviant art, I'm not having much luck finding sites that are specifically for artists on an android (or IOS) platform. I've started on a spreadsheet that lists out the available tools on android and what features they have so they can be compared but I was wondering if there was a site that talks about that kind of thing specifically? I dont find the descriptions or reviews on the play store particularly helpful as the only scratch the surface of the tools functionality and its only after purchasing that you realise its missing x, y or z meaning you need something else as well.
I also like to watch video's of people drawing and would like to see more of them to help me pick up techniques I hadn't considered as a digital newbie.
Any sites you can share with me?
I am getting the Note 8 just so I have the artistic on the go work I want to do. I am looking at photoshop and sketchbook for my drawing needs but like you have not seen much on doing art on android. Maybe its time to start a site
I will post any info I find here that might be interesting to artists.

Sounds good, I currently have PS touch an sketchbook installed not sure what samsung included. I will help with any apps or info I can.
I will look into a site for images and forums for android artwork. I only have android so I will only do this this if I can control the site from my note 8. Will post back here about it in a few days, still learning the note an want the weekend to figure stuff out.

I'm tempted to start a new site using webs.com or something similar specific for mobile tablet artists, but not sure if I will or not yet as it would probably take more upkeep than I'm willing to perform. I mostly use the web while at work but only have limited access and I'm rarely on PC when at home.
Anyone want to help? At the moment the note forums are all seperate but the apps and resources that we all use are common to everyone. My vision is for a front page that would link to various tablet specific resources, guides, reviews etc. List out the tablets with stylus support with links to the xda forums and a forum for people to share there art. discuss apps, techniques etc etc.
I may be able to get this chart finished as well...

How to create an Android app using HTML, CSS and JavaScript

Hello, I have a question on Android development. Personally, I know web development but I do not know JAVA programming because I am not into software development.
I want to develop an android app by using HTML5, CSS3 and JQuery Mobile. The app will be simple, it will be just an app on poetry where users will click some categories and read poems, and also search. That's all. It will be free, no registration, no ads and no server side. I want to use JQuery Mobile for this or even pure HTML5 and CSS3. In fact, HTML and CSS will be used of course.
Bear in ind that I am NOT converting an existing website into an app, but rather creating an app through HTML, CSS and JavaScript. So, the Web View tool is not appropriate here.
My questions are:
1/ Can we really create an APK with obly HTML, CSS or JavaScript?
2/ If we can create, what software (which is free) can I use to create the APK by compiling/converting my web pages?
Thank!

You'll need to go through the (sometimes painful) installation of Eclipse/Android Developer Tools and the Android SDK...
https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/bundle.html
After that you can then do exactly what you are asking for with this...
http://cordova.apache.org/
I'm using that technology to create professional apps (as in, commercial apps for customers) using HTML5 & CSS, Javascript, jQuery and I opt for Bootstrap over jQuery Mobile as it's a lot lighter, but jQuery Mobile works fine with it too.
There's also PhoneGap, but that's just a rebranding of Cordova at the moment. They may branch out in different directions at some point, but at the moment there's no difference. The only advantage to PhoneGap is that you can point it at your source on GitHub and it will build online for you. Very handy if you want to do pure online development, but a bit messy.
Thank you for replying. I think I will try with the PhoneGap and Eclipse as you suggested. I have other questions:
1/ Even the APK will be developed using just HTML, CSS and JavaScript, how to notify the user an update is available through a notification method? I am not asking for tutorials, but just the steps.
2/ As you know, to view the source code of a website, a user will right click and view. As the APK will be developed using client side languages, will they be able to view the source codes in any other way apart decompiling?

Your best bet is to let Google Play Store do all that for you. It means paying for a developer account, but it's not expensive and it means that people can get your app from the Play Store, which looks a lot more credible than a link and instructions how to allow 3rd party apps. Also, you push an update to the Play Store, and that pushes the update to all your users. You can't really ask for better than that.

They can't do anything as simple as "View source" as all the files are embedded in the application, but they can decompile it and get at your source that way, but there's nothing to stop someone doing that with an APK anyway. They best thing would be to develop your app till your happy with it, and then obfuscate the crap out of the html, css & js files. Sure someone could decompile the app and get your source, but they'd really struggle to do anything with it.
Have a play with it and see if it's any good for you. It really does make it simple for a developer with web experience to make apps.
Also, if this is of any use, I made a guide for developing and building Phonegap Android apps purely online, without any SDK or IDE installation. It's not ideal as debugging would be a nightmare. I mostly made it as reference for myself, but check it out anyway...

You tube is your friend
Just do a youtube search with these key words "html5 webview android" and you should be able to find everything you need to know on how to build your html5 powered app
Google offers a "ProGuard" solution on how to mask your code by obfuscation. Good luck!
You can also use phonegap build to build your web apps without using eclipse.
You can't make an app using HTML and all these web developing languages but you can simply make a responsive website (I hope you know that) and then integrate that website into the android app. You may also add something like that once a user opens app once his app will connect to your website and then download the files offline for future offline use.
You can make fully functional games and apps with HTML + Javascript. Once you learn a the basic's you can use the framework I posted here to make a quiz game. As you learn more you can make small puzzle games and action games but that takes time to learn. Start by using this framework to build a game.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2785378
And if you dont know how to use eclipse then use phonegap build it will build the game for you and the 1st game is free with their service.
Sorry, just saw this now... i could have saved you a bit of hassle
If you really dont want to make a deep dive and stay with your current skills theres a really great way to do so (no, im not involed in the project and wanna advertise it i just use it and love it).
Theres really great tool from Intel, named Intel XDK. This thingy lets you easyly use either the Intel based framework (thats really fast and depending on how you "build" the app at the end you get native code, not just an simple AKP that displays content in a webview.).
The above mentioned Cordova is also a build option, so if you already learned about that, you can still use it in here. You can also make the userinterface of your app in a drag&drop IDE that saves you TONS of time.
Check here for some easy examples:
http://app-framework-software.intel.com/components.php
The very best comes at the end, you dont have to care ONE BIT about installing anything on your machine, all build stuff is done on Intel servers. You code the app, decide on a way to build it (Cordova, Android, iOS or whatever) and you get an APK out of it. Whats more, you can test/debug directly on device, in browser or any other possible way.
If you dont want to learn the appfraework (whats is basically just like jquery, you dont really have to "learn" it if your familiar with javascript) or use other known frameworks like jQuery mobile. Best is, you can still use the IDE-Designer even with jQuery. So you can for example choose jquerymobile framework and but in a nvigation layout just with drag&drop. Of course you als have a standard Code-View with autocompletion and all if you want.
Take alook, its awesome...
The reason why i post this here that tere is one flaw (in my opinion), the documentation is not the best (its there of course, full API guides and all) and the Intel foum is not really active, since noone really knows about it it seems. If more ppl use it the community could be great and starters have a really easy tool at hand to get into the world of mobile-development.
Hi,
You can create an Android app using the HTML, CSS, JavaScript by PhoneGap. PhoneGap is a free and open source framework that allows you to create mobile apps using standardized web APIs for the platforms you care about. You can learn it at: phonegap.com
Good luck!

If you're planning on making a update thingy like that basically use github for that where you have a text file and test for the version every time the app launches with window.onload in JS
