Random crash - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Was using the PixC last night, went to bed, plugged it in to charge. At that time the charge was in the high 30's%,
Woke this am, tried to start the tablet, no dice, had to power + vol down and reboot from there, when it rebooted, everything seemed fine, charge only got to the mid-50%s. I checked battery stats and look like it shut off around 4am.
anyone had something similar?

Let's add random shutdowns to the wifi and touchscreen issues. This is the tenth such post I have seen. The pixel team needs to be fired for this POS.

My C Pixel crash quite often, it even happened that crash twice in a row. Moreover, when I woke up this morning my Pixel C was restarted. (Google Translate)
FR : Ma Pixel C crash assez souvent, il est même arrivé qu'elle crash deux fois d'affilé. D'ailleurs, en me réveillant ce matin, ma Pixel C avait redémarré.

Quite possibly a little extreme mate hahah. I've had 1 shutdown, no wifi issues. I've had random shut offs before in all manner of devices, I'm still treating mine as a one off.
The wifi issue though, does warrant some attention, which google has already said they will look at. Still a quality product imo

are you all using auto brightness? my pixel worked well for over a week with manual brightness. Just one day after i set it to auto brightness it had a random shutdown and after a reboot the Touchscreen was jittery. Now after some reboots to savemode and disabled auto brightness everything is fine again.

Ok, quick update, mine did it again last night. incidentally, it was charging whilst connected via an ebay USB A-C cable (which verified via Checkr). This cable is fine when connected to my N6P, but has caused my PixC to crash after a while during charge, twice. I've only every connected the PixC to that cable twice, and both times crashed....
starting to think it doesnt like that cable.

Had my unit do this at least 5 times in the past month. Leave it unattended for too long (let's say over 24h) or plugged in for too long (overnight) and for sure mine will have stopped and needs to be hard reset. I usually then get the touchscreen issues right after that. Such a fun user experience.
I'm pretty sure I've had this occur with the oem charger as well as amazon bought, spec compliant USB-C to USB-A cables as well

My unit has powered off on its own twice. Neither time was during charging. The annoying part about these power downs is they bring back the touch screen bug.

Wow, I started a new thread about this too.
Mine wasn't charging though when it crashed and lost 4500mah of mystery battery. Seems like this is an issue.

[Q] Charging issue that defies common sense...

I searched here and google and found various charging issues but none quite like what I am seeing. The night before last, I plugged my A100 in before bed like I normally do and saw the power light turn orange. In the morning, I unplugged it without even looking at the LED because I just expected it to have charged completely. When I got to my car and turned it on, it was at 32%. I thought maybe I had something running that was eating battery or I didn't plug it in all the way overnight so it didn't charge. I plugged it into the car charger and went to work. When I got to work it was still at 32% but I didn't use it the whole time so I thought that was odd. I pretty much didn't use it the whole day since I knew it was low on power and I didn't have a charger at work. I got home and saw that it was at 28% so I plugged it in. About an hour later, I checked and it was still at 28%. Thinking that was odd, I turned it off and left it charging with it off for an hour. Turned it back on an hour later and still at 28%. I spent a little time using it while plugged in trying to kill off apps and things but it drained to 18% even though it was plugged in, the power LED showed orange, and the battery icon on screen showed charging (lighting bolt). At this point I started to worry that something was seriously wrong. I turned it *off* and left it plugged in all night after checking to make sure the LED was orange. In the morning, the LED had turned off completely (not blue or orange). I turned it on and saw that it was still at 18% even after charging all night turned off. I unplugged and replugged and the LED came on orange again.
So here is where it gets really strange.. I decide to go through RMA process since I'm still under warranty. I don't want my private data on it when sending it to them so I do a wipe. On a whim, I plug it back in after the wipe and guess what? It's charging! What the heck?!?! I had thought maybe I installed something that was causing problems but since it wasn't charging even when turned off, I figured it couldn't be an app. Can an application cause the device not to charge even in the off state? I thought maybe my battery stats had gotten corrupted so the percentage readout wasn't accurate but right after wiping the data, the battery was reading 18% just as before the wipe.
Any thoughts? Anyone ever see anything similar? My gut says to RMA it still.
Reboot the device.
It's a bug that happened to me on Honeycomb all the time with A100. (No longer happens on ICS)
Did you actually read the OP?
Sent from my Acer Iconia Tab A100 using Tapatalk
Yes, multiple reboots didn't help. No charging even when off. Started charging after wipe. Very odd.
So, after my wipe, I set out to see if I could get it to fail again. I loaded a couple of apps that I had loaded a couple of days before this happened and it stopped charging again. Unloaded each of those apps and still no charging. Did another wipe and still no charging. Conclusion is it's busted and just randomly charges on occasion. Sending it in for RMA today. Still very odd that it was reliably charging after that first wipe.
I myself am experiencing exactally the same problem. Any fix found?

Similar thing happened to me. The only thing is I didn't realize it wasn't charging until it was too late and the battery was at 5%. After it shut off, the only way i could get it to turn on was by holding down the power button and plugging in the charger. It didn't get to try a data wipe (didn't have enough time lol). I sent it back and they replaced the system board. Said it was not recognizing the battery properly.
I own two tabs, and one had this issue, the fix is actually quite simple. Let the tab die. No battery life at all. Then, when your sure its dead, plug it back in, and let it charge to full. I haven't had the issue on the tab since.

thanks.
any news guys? I bought a old ACER A100 and only power on while it plug in, so I went ahead and changed the battary, it still does not get charge.
Is the happening on complete stock? Or a custom ROM, if so, which one.
Also, reflash said ROM if applicable, and make sure the data is wiped.
I like the drain the battery idea, although its risky, these tabs can brick if it gets below 10%, current/voltage act weird when its low and blow a breaker inside and keep it from turning on.

What percent does it show the battery at while it's on?

My tab has the charging issue, but it is self inflicted. It was dropped, which cracked the lcd screen. I ordered one after a week or so and replaced it. At this point is when the charging issue cropped up. It powers on only if plugged in, and will get to 3% charge no matter how long it is plugged in. It will also only show the 3% if the charger is unplugged. It will then run for a few minutes until the battery dies. Also, the orange charge blinks about one minute after the charger is plugged in.
I found a reference on the web that if the battery charge gets too low the A100 can't charge it. I also found references that people had this problem, and Acer replaced the mb. I took a shot on the battery since it was a lot cheaper. Still the same. That doesn't the battery was not the issue since it was an ebay battery. So for now I just use it in the living room, plugged into outlet. Works good for that.

Ha! Found my own post by doing google query. Wow, didn't know this thread was still somewhat alive. So, I sent mine back as I mentioned in my last post back in February and they took a week and sent it back to me completely untouched. Basically said it was fixed but the same problem existed. I sent it in after a wipe but I did configure my wifi access point before I sent. When I got it back, my access point connected immediately and it still would not charge. I called them right back furious and demanded they provide shipping back to them because they clearly did nothing. They finally agreed and I shipped it back. After another two weeks of transit and repair time, I got my tablet back and this time it appeared to be fixed.
So, flash forward to 3 weeks ago. One morning I woke up and the tablet wouldn't power on. Black screen but the home "button" would light up when touched and power button would light up when plugged in and such. After several attempts to reset by holding down power button and using the recessed reset button, it was still not responsive. Tried up volume (and down volume) while powering pressing power button.. tried holding down reset button while pressing power button.. all with no result. Submitted rma request and was immediately granted without review. Sent it in and after about two weeks, got it back and it appeared to be working fine. Just this past weekend (about a week after I got the tablet back), I noticed that it was 3% after sitting on the charger for 2 days straight over thanksgiving. ARG!! Looks like another round of RMA here. I have not tried wiping but last time the charging issue happened, it was intermittent for about 2-3 weeks getting worse and worse before finally never charging. I am now near the end of my warranty period and I worry that if I send it back now, they will just turn it around and say it started charging after a wipe. What a piece of ... this is? This will be the 4th times in one year of ownership. I've almost spent the difference in cost between this tablet and other more expensive options in time and shipping alone.
I will try wiping it and then running it all the way down. Although I almost want it to fail hard right now so I can get it RMA'd before my warranty is up.

Severe crashing with the Pixel C and phantom battery loss

Anyone else get this horrible issue? Last night the battery was around 90% after charging. Slept overnight as I usually do most nights and in the morning I couldn't turn on the Pixel C.
Fully expecting to have died I plugged it in and turned it back by holding the power button down for 20 seconds. I discovered the battery had lost over 50%! I needed it for work today! This is the second time it has done this but last time I can't recall the battery losing so much.
I suspect it isn't hardware related as otherwise the battery is pretty fantastic and that I guess we are in fact just privileged owners of a premium device that is going through public beta test! Anyone else see this before?
See the screenshot for yourself!
have you perhaps enabled auto brightness? as my pixel was and is crashfree for over 2 weeks now. After just enabling auto brightness for 1 day it suddenly crashed.
Gesendet von meinem Pixel C mit Tapatalk
Interesting, I'll try it. Thanks for the tip
I encountered something similar, twice, I suspect it was the USB A to C cable I was using to charge. The cable supposedly met spec, and checks out via Checkr, but use that cable twice, and it crashed twice, both times left to charge, went to bed to discover the same results. Other cables have not yielded any issues yet.
Yes, switching off auto brightness helps quite a lot on stock kernel.
Still had crashes, but less frequently.
Two days ago I did install the xceed kernel (01.18.2016-1) - no crashes anymore.

Phone not charging or stopping charging

As the titles states, my phone doens't want to charge the first time I plug it to the original charger. It can stay for hours without charging 1%. I have to reboot and then it'll charge fine. I called google support and they told me it will be fixed in the next updates. Anyone else is having those problems? I just return it if it's just me.
I've had weirdness with charging for sure. Seemingly mostly with the charger that came with it. Mine will say "5 minutes until charged," but I'll be at like 86%. If I unplug and let it settle for a second, it will go back to 84% or whatever, then seems fine when I plug it back in again.
I've been using this Magqi charging dock and magnetic pad and it's been hit or miss. Sometimes just fine, other times won't charge at all. Wife is having the same problem. We both have a Pixel 2 XL.

ok it happened to me before (you clicked something by mistake )
just go to settings -system- developer options -select usb configuration- charging
if this doesn't work
maybe it is something else
I didn't turn on nothing by mistake, it's just not charging. I did a factory reset and seems to work fine until now ( charged just one time ). I'll update the thread if it happens again. I think something was messed up during the November update. I hope it's just a software bug because it's really annoying to reboot the phone Everytime
It happened again after factory reset. It's quite annoying
I've had mine 4 days and it happened to me the first time this morning.
To fix it I turned the phone off, started charging whilst off and then turned back on. Luckily it was back to charging correctly.
I today I now have the slow charging issue (on the supplied charger)
I ran the battery down fully last night and put it on charge at 2 am.
When I left for work at 6:30 am the battery had only charged to 67%, that's 4.5 hours.
Given all the other posts concerning this subject it does not seem uncommon
Yeah just got my phone last night and its happening for me too. Will charge for a minute or two then stops. Going to try the charge while off deal mentioned above and see what happens.
It's quite annoying for me... I hope Google is going to fix this soon. Seems like a software bug
Here is what happens with me.
I have the stock charger with a 6.5' Cable Creations C to C cable.
Any charges that happen with my battery lower than 30%, I have to constantly watch it to make sure it's charging.
If not, I have to unplug and replug. This happens several times between 0-30%
After 30, it seems to pick up fine..
Edit: Forgot to mention, when below 30%, it stops charging because, I take the power off it and all the sudden, it loses 2-3%

Not sure I've seen a situation where the supplied charger didn't charge the phone at all like some have mentioned, but it definitely seems a lot slower than the charging time for the Pixel XL. It's offset in a big way by the much improved battery life I guess, but it certainly doesn't feel like quick charge, at least by 2017 standards.
However when I use the charger that came with my Pixel C, It charges noticeably quicker. I know the Pixel C never sold in huge numbers, and I haven't run any comparison tests here, but has anyone else that owns one noticed better performance with its charger compared to the one that was bundled with their Pixel 2 XL?

Tried Nexus 5x stock charger and it didnt do anything. Not sure whats wrong with our chargers, my Pixel 2 XL always goes to 98%max maybe 99%. Another weird thing that happend. I decided to fully discharge my phone until it shut off for the first cycle(first day I got it to calibrate battery). When I plugged the OEM charger in it showed the symbol that it doesnt have enough power to turn on(needs to charge to 5% or whatever it is), waited 1 hr, 2 hrs same thing. Unplugged, plugged back in, hard reset, bootloader and nothing. Same symbol. Only way to get it back charging was to use a cheap USB A to C cable I got from walmart, plug that into my Nexus 6 charger base and it finally started charging...??? WTF
Same issue
Looks like this is an issue with the November security patch.
Same thing has happened to me on my Pixel 2 XL and i have three different official Type C wall chargers from google (6p, XL (1st gen) and they will not work, however it will work with the quick charge connector in my car (Type A to Type C).
Reviewing the internet other people have the same issue and all seem post November update. I did a factory reset etc to troubleshoot with no luck.
Only thing i have yet to attempt is enroll for the android beta program and force update to 8.1 to see if it resolves the issue.
i live in Dubai and i don't have official support from google nor am i able to contact them, if some one could kindly post an update if they have tried contacting google and got a confirmation that its a S/W issue.
Bump.
Sooo, I woke up last night and saw a message on my phone that said something like, your device is corrupt, etc. Now my phone will not charge... The phone seems fine otherwise, everything seems to work, no more errors or anything, but, two stock pixel 2 chargers and neither charge the phone. However, if I plug it into a computer, it charges. Anyone have any idea of what is going on? I've rebooted, cleared cache from apps (not from twrp though), nothing seems to help.
About my phone: April update, unlocked, rooted stock. The only things I'm running are substratum with the swift dark theme, pixel launcher mods for Virus icon pack, viper audio mod, adaway, greenify, things like that. Nothing major with the exception of the theme. I even disabled/uninstalled the theme and rebooted. The problem is still there. Unless I get this fixed ASAP, I guess I'm calling Google for a replacement...

Almost sounds like a hardware/port issue. About the only 2 things I could suggest is...1. Fastboot the factory image again with the -w flag removed. 2. Factory reset, which, as you know, bites because you have to set everything up again.

Ugh, I thought I might need to try one of those. I'll see what fastbooting the image does. Thanks!
Your description exactly matches my issue with a week old Pixel 2. It won't charge using OEM charger below 30% battery. I have to reset the phone, sometimes reboot works but not all the time. Even safe mode won't work done times. It's frustrating.

I'm having charging issues that started when I installed Android P. At times when the phone is plugged in either to wall charger or car charger it indicates it's charging but actually isn't. Only solution I found was to reboot. I should note this only an Android P issue for me, Oreo didn't exhibit this problem. Battery percentage doesn't matter, it could be at 25% or 95% so I'm thinking my issue is just a P beta bug.
Anyone got a solution to this issue?

My Pixel 3 XL died suddenly

Yesterday morning My Pixel 3 XL suddenly died while in a call. It would not restart.
My day had just started, Pixel 3 XL 128gb fully charged over night, was in a call for about 20 minutes while going down the highway. The phone was in the wireless charger. All of a sudden My Bluetooth switched back to radio I looked down The phone was dead, my call was dropped.
I had about 45 minutes more to travel so while going down the road I attempted to restart; holding power button, holding power and volume down. The phone was not hot, after a while I plugged directly into my rapid charger. The phone wouldn't show any indication of life. No vibration, charge indicator, nothing. Left it on the rapid charger the remainder of the trip.
I let it sit on/off the charger, switched to factory charger. Several hours later attempted to hook to computer, no drivers loaded, no fast boot, no ADB...
Contacted Google, and went through all the troubleshooting steps again. The Google CSR got a replacement on it's way, no hassles. It will arrive in about 2 days.
I'm persistent, and continued troubleshooting last night after is sat for about 4 hours. Finally, I put the phone in it's box, it sat there for about 24 hours.
Tonight I pulled it out and pushed the power button and it started right up normally! Battery was at 23%, so Something must have hung for the entire day. I looked at the phone log and the 20 minute call was missing, the call prior to that was logged.
I Pulled all my precious photos, docs, and pulled out a logcat. Nothing was logged from yesterday. Gonna wipe it, and send it back with a note.
Edit:
About to go to bed, put Pixel3xl in google charger stand, it went black and restarted, now it bootlooped a few times, starts with clock at 12:00, get's NTP and changes to correct time. Gonna try to get some logcats again.
My failure was triggered by attaching the charger; Google Stand and google usb c charger now causing reboot, and bootloops until removed from charger.

Yup,
It was in a wireless charger cradle.
It's a hardware problem, just reset to default and its bootlooping while plugged in. Runs for a few minutes with charger unplugged. I got all my stuffs out of it, and it's wiped, so it's going back to google.

Gotcha. I was having this image of a Pixel stand sitting on the passenger seat with power coming from an auto>AC adapter. LOL! Seriously though, it does seem coincidental that while numerous complaints are showing up about the Pixel 3 series having issues running apps while charging (especially wireless charging) this happens to you while using a 3rd party wireless charger. I know you said it wasn't hot and you are getting a replacement. I just fear that your issue might repeat itself under the same usage pattern.

What type/model wireless charging cradle?
I'm curious. You said your day was just starting and it was fully charged. Why on earth is it in a charging cradle if it's already fully charged? Just wondering because I have yet to run he battery down to zero unless I don't charge overnight and try and stretch out my screen times. I have been getting over 7 hours SOT along with music playback while I commute. That on top of phone and text.
FWIW I exchanged a Pixel 2 XL about 2 months ago because it was having odd/random reboots. I had purchased a P2XL from Google on launch, ended up replacing it through VZW insurance after the screen cracked (didn't have the Pixel protection). Had that one for about 3 months and I would often take it out of my pocket to a freshly rebooted phone, or it would reboot as I removed it from my pocket.
Was annoyed and started removing apps thinking that was the issue. One day I was in a meeting at work and mindlessly spinning my phone on the table while and it rebooted. Spun it again and it eventually rebooted again. There was a mild click/rattle when I shook it that I had attributed to the OIS but every time I shook it, especially when inverted (charging port facing up). I contacted the insurance company and they sent a replacement. A few weeks later my P3XL arrived and I sent the P2XL in as a trade. I can only assume something was loose inside the device. Could be the same with yours. Glad they got it replaced for you.

It was in an iOttie Qi Cradle/wireless charger. I found out after purchasing several of these chargers that the Qi standard won't fast charge Pixel3's. They charge at a about .5 amps.

I put it in the cradle when mobile.
Battery life has been the best of any device I've owned.

This device has rebooted several times over night. In fact That fateful morning when I turned off the alarm it had obviously rebooted since I had to enter the pin, and finger print.
This same thing happened to me today. I dont know if mine is going to start working again, but I did get a replacement ordered from Google. There is a common factor between yours and mine, I too was using an iOttie Qi Cradle. Looks like that might be a problem. Im wondering if I should continue to use it or not. Are you going to still use yours?
What Google number did you call for help? Yup, Mine died watching Youtube while using a Samsung wireless charger. I have the Pixel Stand just not one in every room.
MIne just died as well. Was sitting in a Samsung wireless charger also. Wtf people?
Mine also died today but I was using the Pixel Stand, replacement is on its way. I did manage to turn it back on after about an hour and a half of holding the power button down. The phone allows me to use it for about 30 seconds before it boot loops and if I plug a charger back into it or place it on the Pixel Stand it will go back in to the dead state.
This can't be good! Too many reports here with same issue. Does Google know what's going on?
I had exactly same issue. I've been using an iOytie wireless charger. Mine just shut down. So I powered up and in 30 secs, it would shut down again. Eventually it wouldn't even power up, so I RMA'd it.
New one seems ok...so far!!
On my fourth pixel 3 XL now!
Is there any support for multi-window mode?

Not if it dies suddenly.
I had my phone crash once too while in my car wireless charger. It has not happened again in over 2 weeks.
FYI - this isn't just a cradle issue. I actually had this problem on my FIRST 3 XL, and managed to get Verizon to exchange it in store a few weeks ago (got it on Black Friday for a great price, though the forced monthly payments to retain the deal are obnoxious). Full charge, and just stopped working. Actually got it going after a half hour, but only as far as the hard reset key function - and it froze halfway through the reset. That's when I went to Verizon and had some words.
So, here we are, new one... THIS hasn't happened yet, but I've now had three instances where it wouldn't charge. I bought the cradle, and avoided that intermittent issue - but now it often thinks it's connected to USB when I de-cradle it, and I've had several repeats of the "won't charge" event. This occurs on both OEM and non-OEM chargers, and I found that rebooting the phone fixes the problem. That to me screams OS or drivers.
Anyone heard any news on their problem? (FWIW - I left an OG Pixel XL for this... and have had more problems with this in the first three months than I did with the OG in two years, running beta releases.)

Pixel 2 XL stopped fast charging

My device has recently stopped quick charging. Instead it's charging but an absolutely slow rate. I've read that the device temperature can cause this but even after having it warm by playing videos it doesn't rapid charge...
It's stating that it's charging rapidly but the estimated full charge is about 5 minutes for every minute it's actually stating.
I've factory reset the device to no avail, changed cables and charging plugs.
Honestly, this is putting me off buying another pixel device - my Pixel 1 XL suffered with screen burn. I'm just tired of the device breaking after having it since July 2018.
Does anyone have any advice before I start the ball rolling with the warranty?
(unmodded, never rooted device)

I agree cleaning the USB port might help.
I had a charge rand Phone overheating issue and it was that some water was in the port.
Even dust has metal particulates, so cleaning it and making sure no dust or water is in, is a great idea.
Cleaning the port worked for me few weeks ago,i had to try a few times with a toothpick
So I've cleaned the charging port. The device when screen is off is coming back charging at 850mah when I plug it in with the screen on it charges at 1000mah.
Can someone send me over what there's charges at after having the phone screen off after half an hour?
I think there's something wrong with the battery, just doesn't feel like it's charging like it used to.
This is what the ampere is showing when I've plugged in the device.
To put this in perspective.
Here's my old Nexus 6P.
Can someone show me what their Ampere shows when the device has just been plugged in and then what it's like when it's been on charge for a while?
That way I can have an understanding as to what a Pixel 2 XL should be charging at.

Weirdly the device seems to be charging okay today. I'm gonna see how it goes, probably warranty if it happens again.
First, that app isn't the most accurate way to measure charging.
Second, fast charging is at it's fastest when the battery capacity is low. So below 20% you'll get the highest number. Your screenshots are 73% and higher.
So typically for me, I gain 70-75% in 60 minutes when I start at 5-10% and don't interrupt it with use. It's been like that since I've gotten the phone October 2017.

Some screenshots showing this morning's charge. By the way, going from 80% to 90% is slow, and 90% to 100% is very slow. That's why when I'm topping off, I just unplug at 1 hour or around 80% because it's a waste of time to wait any longer.

Okay, so I've just let my phone charge whilst off as it was drained completely. It was the full length of a breaking bad episode (rewatching).
Pick up the phone its very cold to touch, I then turn the phone on, it's at 20%.
A device for 40 minutes doesn't go from 0-20% when it's using a fast charger... I should be on at least 50% maybe even 75%

Very strange. Stock charger right? Don't think it would matter but I've never charged with the phone off. I would try to replicate what I showed you in screenshots. 15% plug it in, phone on but screen off, set a timer for 1 hour, return and see where you're at.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem l.
My pixel 2 XL stopped charging at all of the sudden and only accepts slow charging and with a "Chinese" cable. The original cable doesn't work. No the cable ain't broken or the charger. My girlfriend has a pixel 3 and she uses my charger and cable and works on hers. We used also her charger and cable ( from pixel 3s ) and on her pixel 3 everything works comes to mine it doesn't even recognize to start charging.

Last night I drained again, charged with another stock charger I have, completely different house - was at my partners house. Again 35 minutes, switched off, 13%.
I'm going to have to call my insurance company, I get insurance with my bank - I'll have to pay an excess but they should be able to sort it I think.

This what you're experiencing sounds different to my issue.
My device fast chargers when it's plugged in. I have read that the Pixel 2 XL charges at a massively slower rate if the battery is at 20 degrees or below - this is unacceptable as the phone switched on, the battery till be always below that.
What's frustrating is the tips and support options in settings doesn't even open anymore, whether they've killed that feature off or not...

Maybe for you, but for a lot of people it isn't. Check out the official pixel forums on Google or Reddit.
