Severe crashing with the Pixel C and phantom battery loss - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else get this horrible issue? Last night the battery was around 90% after charging. Slept overnight as I usually do most nights and in the morning I couldn't turn on the Pixel C.
Fully expecting to have died I plugged it in and turned it back by holding the power button down for 20 seconds. I discovered the battery had lost over 50%! I needed it for work today! This is the second time it has done this but last time I can't recall the battery losing so much.
I suspect it isn't hardware related as otherwise the battery is pretty fantastic and that I guess we are in fact just privileged owners of a premium device that is going through public beta test! Anyone else see this before?
See the screenshot for yourself!

have you perhaps enabled auto brightness? as my pixel was and is crashfree for over 2 weeks now. After just enabling auto brightness for 1 day it suddenly crashed.

Interesting, I'll try it. Thanks for the tip

I encountered something similar, twice, I suspect it was the USB A to C cable I was using to charge. The cable supposedly met spec, and checks out via Checkr, but use that cable twice, and it crashed twice, both times left to charge, went to bed to discover the same results. Other cables have not yielded any issues yet.

Yes, switching off auto brightness helps quite a lot on stock kernel.
Still had crashes, but less frequently.
Two days ago I did install the xceed kernel (01.18.2016-1) - no crashes anymore.

He also published a nice TWRP.

[Q] Charging issue that defies common sense...

I searched here and google and found various charging issues but none quite like what I am seeing. The night before last, I plugged my A100 in before bed like I normally do and saw the power light turn orange. In the morning, I unplugged it without even looking at the LED because I just expected it to have charged completely. When I got to my car and turned it on, it was at 32%. I thought maybe I had something running that was eating battery or I didn't plug it in all the way overnight so it didn't charge. I plugged it into the car charger and went to work. When I got to work it was still at 32% but I didn't use it the whole time so I thought that was odd. I pretty much didn't use it the whole day since I knew it was low on power and I didn't have a charger at work. I got home and saw that it was at 28% so I plugged it in. About an hour later, I checked and it was still at 28%. Thinking that was odd, I turned it off and left it charging with it off for an hour. Turned it back on an hour later and still at 28%. I spent a little time using it while plugged in trying to kill off apps and things but it drained to 18% even though it was plugged in, the power LED showed orange, and the battery icon on screen showed charging (lighting bolt). At this point I started to worry that something was seriously wrong. I turned it *off* and left it plugged in all night after checking to make sure the LED was orange. In the morning, the LED had turned off completely (not blue or orange). I turned it on and saw that it was still at 18% even after charging all night turned off. I unplugged and replugged and the LED came on orange again.
So here is where it gets really strange.. I decide to go through RMA process since I'm still under warranty. I don't want my private data on it when sending it to them so I do a wipe. On a whim, I plug it back in after the wipe and guess what? It's charging! What the heck?!?! I had thought maybe I installed something that was causing problems but since it wasn't charging even when turned off, I figured it couldn't be an app. Can an application cause the device not to charge even in the off state? I thought maybe my battery stats had gotten corrupted so the percentage readout wasn't accurate but right after wiping the data, the battery was reading 18% just as before the wipe.
Any thoughts? Anyone ever see anything similar? My gut says to RMA it still.
Reboot the device.
It's a bug that happened to me on Honeycomb all the time with A100. (No longer happens on ICS)
Did you actually read the OP?
Sent from my Acer Iconia Tab A100 using Tapatalk
Yes, multiple reboots didn't help. No charging even when off. Started charging after wipe. Very odd.
So, after my wipe, I set out to see if I could get it to fail again. I loaded a couple of apps that I had loaded a couple of days before this happened and it stopped charging again. Unloaded each of those apps and still no charging. Did another wipe and still no charging. Conclusion is it's busted and just randomly charges on occasion. Sending it in for RMA today. Still very odd that it was reliably charging after that first wipe.
I myself am experiencing exactally the same problem. Any fix found?

Similar thing happened to me. The only thing is I didn't realize it wasn't charging until it was too late and the battery was at 5%. After it shut off, the only way i could get it to turn on was by holding down the power button and plugging in the charger. It didn't get to try a data wipe (didn't have enough time lol). I sent it back and they replaced the system board. Said it was not recognizing the battery properly.
I own two tabs, and one had this issue, the fix is actually quite simple. Let the tab die. No battery life at all. Then, when your sure its dead, plug it back in, and let it charge to full. I haven't had the issue on the tab since.

thanks.
any news guys? I bought a old ACER A100 and only power on while it plug in, so I went ahead and changed the battary, it still does not get charge.
Is the happening on complete stock? Or a custom ROM, if so, which one.
Also, reflash said ROM if applicable, and make sure the data is wiped.
I like the drain the battery idea, although its risky, these tabs can brick if it gets below 10%, current/voltage act weird when its low and blow a breaker inside and keep it from turning on.

What percent does it show the battery at while it's on?
Sent via Acer Iconia A100 on CM10_Build090212; godmachine v2.0 kernel, Smooth, Stable, Fast
My tab has the charging issue, but it is self inflicted. It was dropped, which cracked the lcd screen. I ordered one after a week or so and replaced it. At this point is when the charging issue cropped up. It powers on only if plugged in, and will get to 3% charge no matter how long it is plugged in. It will also only show the 3% if the charger is unplugged. It will then run for a few minutes until the battery dies. Also, the orange charge blinks about one minute after the charger is plugged in.
I found a reference on the web that if the battery charge gets too low the A100 can't charge it. I also found references that people had this problem, and Acer replaced the mb. I took a shot on the battery since it was a lot cheaper. Still the same. That doesn't the battery was not the issue since it was an ebay battery. So for now I just use it in the living room, plugged into outlet. Works good for that.

Ha! Found my own post by doing google query. Wow, didn't know this thread was still somewhat alive. So, I sent mine back as I mentioned in my last post back in February and they took a week and sent it back to me completely untouched. Basically said it was fixed but the same problem existed. I sent it in after a wipe but I did configure my wifi access point before I sent. When I got it back, my access point connected immediately and it still would not charge. I called them right back furious and demanded they provide shipping back to them because they clearly did nothing. They finally agreed and I shipped it back. After another two weeks of transit and repair time, I got my tablet back and this time it appeared to be fixed.
So, flash forward to 3 weeks ago. One morning I woke up and the tablet wouldn't power on. Black screen but the home "button" would light up when touched and power button would light up when plugged in and such. After several attempts to reset by holding down power button and using the recessed reset button, it was still not responsive. Tried up volume (and down volume) while powering pressing power button.. tried holding down reset button while pressing power button.. all with no result. Submitted rma request and was immediately granted without review. Sent it in and after about two weeks, got it back and it appeared to be working fine. Just this past weekend (about a week after I got the tablet back), I noticed that it was 3% after sitting on the charger for 2 days straight over thanksgiving. ARG!! Looks like another round of RMA here. I have not tried wiping but last time the charging issue happened, it was intermittent for about 2-3 weeks getting worse and worse before finally never charging. I am now near the end of my warranty period and I worry that if I send it back now, they will just turn it around and say it started charging after a wipe. What a piece of ... this is? This will be the 4th times in one year of ownership. I've almost spent the difference in cost between this tablet and other more expensive options in time and shipping alone.
I will try wiping it and then running it all the way down. Although I almost want it to fail hard right now so I can get it RMA'd before my warranty is up.

Charging issue with Tab Pro 8.4 and newest update!

I just developed a charging issue where I have it plugged in and it hasn't advanced in %. It's stuck at around 65%. Official charger/usb cord and tried different outlets.
This never happened on the first firmware build, but only after the second update the last month.
Anyone else experience this?
I've encountered it both in stock and cm11. Run the batterybdown to 10 % and fully charge. Should report properly then.

I'm running the 8.4 original firmware without issue since I bought it several months ago. This week it charges up to a point then stops. Restarting does not help. Different chargers, etc. Arggh!!
This worked for me: (Press and hold: Volume Up + Home + Power (in that order)). Keep holding an unit will reboot. It's not abrasive like a factory reset (like I was considering doing).
Now for the first time in a week, i'm over 50% and its still charging like it should.
Someone else did all the hard lifting to find the solution. I just found the tread over on android central. http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...y-wont-charge-without-reboot.html#post3723135
Cheers.
I haven't upgraded, but I did encounter the same problem earlier this week. It was stuck at 91% even though I left it charging all night. After restarting and plugging it into my laptop for a while, it seemed to work fine again. Now and then it'll just do strange things like this. xD
I'm having same problem, stucks at about 57% 69%. can't find a solution yet. In my case it is happening after software upgrade. does anyone have a solution that helps ? restarting does not seam to be a solution.

Pretty much a known issue on all software builds (maybe a hardware issue?). There is a long thread about this issue in this section. The only consistent solution seems to be to open up the tablet, and disconnect/reconnect the battery. A bit extreme for my taste, so I've just left it alone. Sometimes mine will get stuck at various percentages (for a few charge cycles), sometimes it will charge up to full. Reboots sometimes help, but not always.

Went from a machine that could discharge completely in a few hours doing general surfing and messing around. (Not gaming or video).Taking all night to charge to 70% and constant reboots to get to 100%.
Took the back off and disconnected the battery as per advice on this thread.
At 97% it now gave me nearly 6 hours video streaming down to 17%. Only took around two hours then to fully charge.
I was a little worried about doing it but it is well worth it.
Tip I found two thinnish guitar picks worked really well to ease the back off.
I never had this problem or as bad as some users but I have notices a few things to keep an eye out for
When you plug your tab into the charger do this
Go to settings - Battery and make sure it says Charging (AC) , on a few very rare occasions I found that sometimes plugging it in it wouldn't switch over to charging (it would still say discharging even though it was pulling current from the charger) and required a reboot I suspect this could mess up battery stats pretty bad, another way to tell is when you plug it in, shut the screen off for a second or two, then press the home button or power button and make sure it says Charging xx% on the unlock screen.
another way to charge is just power it off (power button for 5 seconds, select power off on the popop menu) plug it in and you will see a big battery charging animation, you can regularly check updates by pressing the home key or power key...
Oh and toggle off WIFI (found out wifi can pull an additional 100mA when tablet is in standby), bluetooth(not necessary unless you were using it), and GPS before charging.

Random crash

Was using the PixC last night, went to bed, plugged it in to charge. At that time the charge was in the high 30's%,
Woke this am, tried to start the tablet, no dice, had to power + vol down and reboot from there, when it rebooted, everything seemed fine, charge only got to the mid-50%s. I checked battery stats and look like it shut off around 4am.
anyone had something similar?
Let's add random shutdowns to the wifi and touchscreen issues. This is the tenth such post I have seen. The pixel team needs to be fired for this POS.

Quite possibly a little extreme mate hahah. I've had 1 shutdown, no wifi issues. I've had random shut offs before in all manner of devices, I'm still treating mine as a one off.
The wifi issue though, does warrant some attention, which google has already said they will look at. Still a quality product imo
are you all using auto brightness? my pixel worked well for over a week with manual brightness. Just one day after i set it to auto brightness it had a random shutdown and after a reboot the Touchscreen was jittery. Now after some reboots to savemode and disabled auto brightness everything is fine again.

Ok, quick update, mine did it again last night. incidentally, it was charging whilst connected via an ebay USB A-C cable (which verified via Checkr). This cable is fine when connected to my N6P, but has caused my PixC to crash after a while during charge, twice. I've only every connected the PixC to that cable twice, and both times crashed....
starting to think it doesnt like that cable.
Had my unit do this at least 5 times in the past month. Leave it unattended for too long (let's say over 24h) or plugged in for too long (overnight) and for sure mine will have stopped and needs to be hard reset. I usually then get the touchscreen issues right after that. Such a fun user experience.
I'm pretty sure I've had this occur with the oem charger as well as amazon bought, spec compliant USB-C to USB-A cables as well
My unit has powered off on its own twice. Neither time was during charging. The annoying part about these power downs is they bring back the touch screen bug.
Wow, I started a new thread about this too.
Mine wasn't charging though when it crashed and lost 4500mah of mystery battery. Seems like this is an issue.

SM-P605 cannot charge

Greetings, I have a bit of an issue with my tablet and it's most likely a hardware one.
About two days ago I had my tablet completely discharged and I put it on the charger. I saw the battery and lightning screen and left it for about a day.
Then yesterday I wanted to watch a movie on it and so I reached for it and all it had was a black screen. I thought that it must have charged up completely, so I pulled it out of the charger and started it up.
It then went as far as the Samsung logo and 20-30 seconds afterwards it shut down. I thought that maybe my ROM became faulty or smth and tried to boot into TWRP. Same thing.
Booting into the Bootloader worked but at one point the screen started rapidly changing its brightness. And it again turned off after a couple of seconds.
I tried this several times, connecting it to the wall charger or my laptop but every time it turned on for only a couple of seconds and now it has completely died off. No matter with which cable, charger or power source I try to charge it, it doesn't light up at all. Power button and combinations with volume buttons don't do anything.
A bit of info about the device: It's about 2 years old running the latest LineageOS. Roughly 1 year ago it suffered a drop and the screen got cracked. I ended up buying a spare screen from China and gave it to a hardware specialist to install it. (Samsung doesn't really have representatives near me, so that was the easiest option) Ever since then the speakers have always been a lot quieter and worse-quality but everything else worked fine.
I believe that somehow the charging circuit fried itself and now the battery has died off. Is that even possible? I haven't charged it with any unknown wall chargers or anything that could fry it. Can someone please help me fix this problem since I have no idea where to start?
Thanks in advance...

Phone not charging or stopping charging

As the titles states, my phone doens't want to charge the first time I plug it to the original charger. It can stay for hours without charging 1%. I have to reboot and then it'll charge fine. I called google support and they told me it will be fixed in the next updates. Anyone else is having those problems? I just return it if it's just me.
I've had weirdness with charging for sure. Seemingly mostly with the charger that came with it. Mine will say "5 minutes until charged," but I'll be at like 86%. If I unplug and let it settle for a second, it will go back to 84% or whatever, then seems fine when I plug it back in again.
I've been using this Magqi charging dock and magnetic pad and it's been hit or miss. Sometimes just fine, other times won't charge at all. Wife is having the same problem. We both have a Pixel 2 XL.

ok it happened to me before (you clicked something by mistake )
just go to settings -system- developer options -select usb configuration- charging
if this doesn't work
maybe it is something else
I didn't turn on nothing by mistake, it's just not charging. I did a factory reset and seems to work fine until now ( charged just one time ). I'll update the thread if it happens again. I think something was messed up during the November update. I hope it's just a software bug because it's really annoying to reboot the phone Everytime
It happened again after factory reset. It's quite annoying
I've had mine 4 days and it happened to me the first time this morning.
To fix it I turned the phone off, started charging whilst off and then turned back on. Luckily it was back to charging correctly.
I today I now have the slow charging issue (on the supplied charger)
I ran the battery down fully last night and put it on charge at 2 am.
When I left for work at 6:30 am the battery had only charged to 67%, that's 4.5 hours.
Given all the other posts concerning this subject it does not seem uncommon
Yeah just got my phone last night and its happening for me too. Will charge for a minute or two then stops. Going to try the charge while off deal mentioned above and see what happens.
It's quite annoying for me... I hope Google is going to fix this soon. Seems like a software bug
Here is what happens with me.
I have the stock charger with a 6.5' Cable Creations C to C cable.
Any charges that happen with my battery lower than 30%, I have to constantly watch it to make sure it's charging.
If not, I have to unplug and replug. This happens several times between 0-30%
After 30, it seems to pick up fine..
Edit: Forgot to mention, when below 30%, it stops charging because, I take the power off it and all the sudden, it loses 2-3%
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL
Not sure I've seen a situation where the supplied charger didn't charge the phone at all like some have mentioned, but it definitely seems a lot slower than the charging time for the Pixel XL. It's offset in a big way by the much improved battery life I guess, but it certainly doesn't feel like quick charge, at least by 2017 standards.
However when I use the charger that came with my Pixel C, It charges noticeably quicker. I know the Pixel C never sold in huge numbers, and I haven't run any comparison tests here, but has anyone else that owns one noticed better performance with its charger compared to the one that was bundled with their Pixel 2 XL?

Tried Nexus 5x stock charger and it didnt do anything. Not sure whats wrong with our chargers, my Pixel 2 XL always goes to 98%max maybe 99%. Another weird thing that happend. I decided to fully discharge my phone until it shut off for the first cycle(first day I got it to calibrate battery). When I plugged the OEM charger in it showed the symbol that it doesnt have enough power to turn on(needs to charge to 5% or whatever it is), waited 1 hr, 2 hrs same thing. Unplugged, plugged back in, hard reset, bootloader and nothing. Same symbol. Only way to get it back charging was to use a cheap USB A to C cable I got from walmart, plug that into my Nexus 6 charger base and it finally started charging...??? WTF
Same issue
Looks like this is an issue with the November security patch.
Same thing has happened to me on my Pixel 2 XL and i have three different official Type C wall chargers from google (6p, XL (1st gen) and they will not work, however it will work with the quick charge connector in my car (Type A to Type C).
Reviewing the internet other people have the same issue and all seem post November update. I did a factory reset etc to troubleshoot with no luck.
Only thing i have yet to attempt is enroll for the android beta program and force update to 8.1 to see if it resolves the issue.
i live in Dubai and i don't have official support from google nor am i able to contact them, if some one could kindly post an update if they have tried contacting google and got a confirmation that its a S/W issue.
Bump.
Sooo, I woke up last night and saw a message on my phone that said something like, your device is corrupt, etc. Now my phone will not charge... The phone seems fine otherwise, everything seems to work, no more errors or anything, but, two stock pixel 2 chargers and neither charge the phone. However, if I plug it into a computer, it charges. Anyone have any idea of what is going on? I've rebooted, cleared cache from apps (not from twrp though), nothing seems to help.
About my phone: April update, unlocked, rooted stock. The only things I'm running are substratum with the swift dark theme, pixel launcher mods for Virus icon pack, viper audio mod, adaway, greenify, things like that. Nothing major with the exception of the theme. I even disabled/uninstalled the theme and rebooted. The problem is still there. Unless I get this fixed ASAP, I guess I'm calling Google for a replacement...

Almost sounds like a hardware/port issue. About the only 2 things I could suggest is...1. Fastboot the factory image again with the -w flag removed. 2. Factory reset, which, as you know, bites because you have to set everything up again.

Your description exactly matches my issue with a week old Pixel 2. It won't charge using OEM charger below 30% battery. I have to reset the phone, sometimes reboot works but not all the time. Even safe mode won't work done times. It's frustrating.

I'm having charging issues that started when I installed Android P. At times when the phone is plugged in either to wall charger or car charger it indicates it's charging but actually isn't. Only solution I found was to reboot. I should note this only an Android P issue for me, Oreo didn't exhibit this problem. Battery percentage doesn't matter, it could be at 25% or 95% so I'm thinking my issue is just a P beta bug.
Anyone got a solution to this issue?
