Semi-Dead Phone - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yesterday, my groupmates and I were presenting this VR application to our panelists. Somehow in the middle of the demo, my phone rebooted and it took a while before it actually opened. After it opened though, a few seconds or about a minute later it will reboot again and this happened a few times so I decided to turn it off. Later, when I decided to turn it on again it won't let me past the LG logo and it just keeps on bootlooping so I decided to turn it off by removing the battery and let it stay off for a while. Again when I decided to check on it, the phone won't even turn on even after holding the power button for a few seconds and trying to remove battery and place it back. I decided to check on it later again and it would boot but only until the LG logo again and this time it stays there for a few seconds and then it goes black and this just keeps on happening every time I try opening it. I even tried to do a hard reset (reset to factory settings) but only the same thing happens, the phone freezes at the "Yes" option when doing the factory reset and it goes to black after a few seconds. I even tried flashing a firmware but it won't let me do it because the same thing happens (reboots into LG logo, freezes and then turns black).
What could have happened? Is there anyway to fix this? :/
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you are also in bootloop effected G4 club now. If it is in warranty, claim it as its board will be replaced, it is hardware failure. What is Serial Number of your G4?

Damn :/ I bought mine from an online store not directly related to LG but they have a 1 year service warranty though so I'll try that.

Your S/N is on the phone behind the battery. They will also need your IMEI number.
So you, just like hundreds here, and I am pretty sure it's thousands globally have got bootloop issue so there is no need to create new thread as that is not going to fix your issue as you are in the same boat just like all of us with probably your serial number starting with 505xxx.

Oh well, unlucky... I don't remember seeing any 511 developing bootloop which might be concern for others since I believe that from November 2015 they fixed the bootloop issue with hardware revision 1.1. You can add it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/longest-running-bootloop-g4-t3386329 so that others are aware that 511 can also develop bootloop

I'm sure you'll find all the answers going through threads on LG G4 bootloop issue. Seems like the pins on the qualcomm chip get somehow loose or unstuck from the motherboard overtime (usually the 2 big cores) that why the phone is unable to boot when that happens. That's why disabling the big cores helps to boot the phone using only 4 small cores.

u gave to a person who says he can repair it, it was okay for few hours then again its restarting and same problem again stucked in bootloop now going to disable some processors and flash to stock rom hopefully that might solve my problem but not sure yet..

supposely upto 510 were good.. but yet they still to bootloop.. so chances are high for your device.

Problem is I bought the phone from an online retailer and all they have is labor warranty. I've also tried e-mailing LG here in the Philippines but I haven't received a reply yet and it's been almost a week.
Can removing the 2 big cores (hardware, is it even possible?) by a guy who can repair it, fix the phone?

they dont have chat option on pholippines? i always chat with them in the USA. if you have warranty callled them or chat so they can fix it . or get you a new phone.. or repaired.
not sure thers is a TOT file that disable it then root it and enable other 3 small cores. to boot.. and use phone.

U cant claim warranty from lg unless u buy from them directly ...u best bet is to contact the online store n tell them to contact LG otherwise ur screwed lg will never accept warranty n fixing it via technician cost 200US$ cuz they need to replace a motherboard from fixed working g4....isnt lg phones a pain in the *** next time dont buy lg phones...

That is not correct. 12 month warranty is provided by LG for the device so he can go ahead and get in touch with LG. As long as he's got proof of purchase that's all they ask.

Please help!!! My G4 H815 hard bricked without any custom software or rooting

The decive is only recognized as qhsusb_bulk. And I never messed around with any custom roms or rooting. The power went off suddenly and couldn't turn it back on. Please help!!!!
If you were not doing any sort of modification, it sounds like a hardware failure. Get a warranty replacement if you can.

Nope the battery didn't run out. It was about 80% left. And above of all, I was in the meeting at that morning and i put down the phone in silent. After that, i couldn't be able to double tap anymore then I tried power button at the back. I even try plugging the charger in and pressed the power button. Tried to factory reset it. And tried using different adapter and cable. The led light didn't even turn on. But when i plugged in to my laptop, i hear the noti sound and it shows qshusb_bulk in the device manager. I think it's on qualcomm mode. I saw some posts about unbricking g3 which is on qualcomm mode but no luck for G4.

It must be hardware failure but I don't have warranty. See the thing is I'm in Myanmar. The authorized distributor only sells dual sims model. But i never planned to use dual sims ones. So i tried to get the single sim version from singapore and the warranty from that country doesn't really seem to be able help.

That error means the bootloader is corrupted. No way to fix it currently without the right software and LG proprietary firmware. Not available anywhere I looked for the G4 (for the lay person at least). Since you weren't tinkering with it, could also mean the memory is bad.
Call LG.
Ask on lgviet.com there are guys that can repair a dead boot. One even wrote here I dunno if it was Manhit or else. They are in Vietnam, not too distant for you maybe

When did you get the last update. must be about two weeks ago for the H815. Did it go ok ?

Contact the seller and ask if they can help. it would mean you send it to them, they sent it over to the service center and when its fixed return it back to you. you will be spending for postage. there is a warranty but its in singapore.
unless you can figure out a way to repair it locally.

Agree, quite rare, but it does happen. On my original Galaxy Nexus, the CPU just crapped out and died one day. That was the repair facility's assessment.
Flash memory specifically, not so much.

At this point it seems like they just realized what the problem is after wrongly sending back a few units as 'repaired' even though it's still having issues.

If you purchased your G4 from a third party website/eBay, it's more difficult to get your warranty recognized.. best is buying it via carrier, LG official store and recognized sellers.
Are they also going to apply the fix during the production of newer LG G4s? because if not, it sounds like all lg g4 will experience the bootloop sooner or later and will only repair it after it has happened
Yes, no detailed information about it, but it seems that they already changed the production process weeks ago and they're just late to communicate on the identification of this breakdown.

I just bought the g4 and sadly discovered that my S/N started with 505. Thanks god i did not unlock the bootloader. But I really want to unlock it to install custom rom. I'm thinking of sending my device to LG even if i didn't have the bootloop yet so i'll be sure not to get it after unlocking the bootloader and then having LG not repairing my phone. What do you think ?
Just use it and stop worrying, your device may not be broken as ours.. and no, you can't leave it to repair if it doesn't have the bootloop thing.
So where are all those people now who always wanted to prove not many people are being affected or it's a common thing to have problems when they first come in the market???? I wanna see their faces... I had to hear lots of things when I started writing about it. People made me believe maybe I am the only one annoying the surreal sound of the community. It makes me so happy to see this day which I was crying out loud to happen for so long.

Often when people are not concerned they tend to underestimate facts.. and this proves too much units are faulty.

Good to see this thread. My phone just died this night and since then is constantly hanging at boot screen. No access to recovery and download mode, no recognition by the computer (only a few seconds, then it restarts and gets disconnected) so no kdz flash via flash tool either. Just sent out a repair request to LG. Now fingers crossed it falls under warranty as I unlocked the bootloader. I purchased it in June and this is clearly of one of the first produced series which has the hardware defect, s/n starts with 505.
Don't worry, LG must repair this harware issue, no matter if BL is unlocked or not.
If you want to wipe or recover your data, try the freezer method. It works.

A lot of these 'people' don't really care or look into things until it happens to them.
Then all of a sudden there up in arms being your friend about the issue. It really only took a two second google search to see how widespread this is. On reddit there's a constant stream of bootloop posts if that's not enough proof.
Now? It's just crickets from the ones who were so keen on shooting this off as a small 'problem'. foh

I have a backup on the sd card from just a few days ago. I was aware something is wrong as it started to have charging issues, so I made one to better be safe than sorry.

Unfortunately mine freeze too fast, I just had time to retrieve my data then wipe all via recovery.. now it's sent for repair.. :crying:

Yo don't complain as your phone is working great, just enjoy it and keep in mind to backup your data to microSD/computer. There's a small percentage that it will brake one day.
I remember mine overheated few times, and it may have broke a hardware component.
If there's nothing to report on your device, then you don't have to worry.

Why? Nobody knows what serials are affected or the extent of the problem. Keep daily backups (as you should be doing anyway) and worry about it if it bootloops. Here's a hint - it probably wont.

I don't believe this at all. 602 was basically the newest revision anyone could quote at the time that LG "Acknowledged" there was a fault.
There have been reports of 603 units with the problem somewhere. (On either Reddit or this forum, can't remember where)
Given the way that LG are handling warranty claims and not honouring repairs for boot looped devices which are rooted or bootloader unlocked.
I think its way more likely that LG have just realised that most devices seem to take around 6 to 9 months before they fail, its easy to cost manage the issue by swapping them all around with minimal repairs until all warranties have expired.
I doubt they are making any new G4's now that the G5 is out. They will be hoping everyone who has a failed device with no repair options will just upgrade to the G5.
Those of which move to other suppliers would be considered acceptable losses.

I've got one, no problems.
Its dual sim and the number of people with dual sim i find complaining about boot loops is minuscule. Mostly the single sim lot. I'll take my chances.
Guess what, if mine goes south, i use warranty. If no warranty left, i'll buy another G4 with warranty at half the price i paid when it launched.
What am i going to do with those leather backs and cases otherwise

The never officially acknowledged anything hence the quotes.
They unofficially confirmed to android authority that there was a problem here:

Unlocking the device requires submitting the IMEI/DeviceID to LG which they can use as a warranty blacklist.
AFAIK an unlocked device advertises its unlocked status on the bootloader which is visible before the boot-loop occurs.
LG have a root checking service called RCT which logs the date and time of any root related files/binaries to the /persist partition and I believe it also sets a flag in an RCT partition.
It builds a log file of which exact root elements it has seen eg su binaries/ busybox binaries forbidden file extensions and the date/time it detected the latest one of these elements.
Simply enter the hidden menu and find the RCT option to see your devices status.
LG can simply disable the faulty cores on a boot-looping device and check any/all of these.
The best way to hide root that I have read on here is to fry the motherboard by applying 24v to the battery contacts. If LG did refuse to warranty though you have absolutely no chance of recovering from that.

Nothing is undetectable.... The post I read this idea from suggested that this forced the device into the Qualcomm recovery mode (most likely the flash chip can not handle the 24v but the lower level hardware can).
Given that the source of the problem is a faulty solder connection to the flash chip. this advances the problem past the faulty connection stage to the completely disconnected/shorted flash memory stage.
If they cannot boot/read the flash memory chip at all they have no way to prove you rooted. providing you didn't unlock your bootloader.
Obviously if you push it too much, physical damage like burn marks would be a giveaway of foul play.
I read one user had been denied warranty due to oxidation on the mainboard... given the faulty soldering and thermal issues this could cause oxidation/residue on the mainboard.
Another user was refused warranty because a warranty sticker was not present on one of the screws of his device. (This concerns me because my device has no such visible stickers)

Right, this is what i was hinting at. You have to be desperate to try something like this which could end up forfeiting everything.

yes there is no root. That unfortunately is the situation we are in, every brand has some unnecessary drawback or other.
Well unfort i got a sprint varient but no longer with sprint. Im sure lg wont fix mine if it did happen. I cracked my digitizer about 2 days ago so now the phone has its first sign of damage. And knowing lgs good for nothin high and mighty butts theyll tell me thats what did the boot loop. And for them hoping ill upgrade yea rite never again. Ive been using my old internation edition note 1. Just because its rooted and custom recovery. Id rather go old skool than deal with lg any more.
Plus i thermal paste every device ive owned back since my og evo 4g. So theyll know ive been in mine.
Also as for the waranty sticker mine didnt have one either

The poll was there, but was removed 2 weeks ago, possibly new one will be back. Some ppl participated and answered that they don't have a bootloop, but later they had to change their vote and that was not possible... I don't remember the numbers, but the problem is also available on H818, many people go to the Service with it

It will be interesting if it starts again. I wonder why they removed it. Should have left it as is.
From the poll here, the ratio of devices with bootloop is highest with 505, fewer with 506 then keeps getting lower as the months go on. Yes there are some that have a problem but we don't know how many don't have a problem. They are quietly happy

1 year warranty in India too. 30k G4's imported. Number of Indians who complain about bootloop on xda ? can't find any. Why.
There have been other issues with earlier models, screen problems. One guy had the phone die. he said not bootloop.
Hong kong is another and Indonesia but again they say like you many, there is some noise for a month then it goes quiet.
But the single sim thread it never goes quiet.

With the help of google translate did a search on the LG section for the word 'butlup' (short for butlupnikov ) in cyrillic and found about 24 reports.
There is no pattern, only half of those 24 mention the serial#. Some earlier serials 505, 506, 507and some more recent ones 510, 601etc. The impression you would get is any number can bootloop which isn't what we found here.

In general, a matter of luck, like in any other phone. There is more panic, which somehow affects people. I, too, this fact forced to think about the choice of an alternative, but I did not find one, considering the price and characteristics. A camera for me is probably the most important point. None of the phone for the same price no camera, even close similar to G4 camera. The only option may be a Galaxy S7 / S7Edge. But twice the cost (comparing with G4 price) immediately makes to abandon its purchase.

Hi, just bought a second hand g4 with serial number starting 509 will the phone possibly bootloop? Also the phone is the Taiwan model and I currently live in the UK, will having the Taiwan model cause any problems? Thanks
It may Bootloop it may not. There is no definite answer. You may have problems with a non EU model in the EU. They may fix it or may not. You have to ask an LG service centre about this.

If you ask if 509 is prone to Bootloop issue I think it is. Most bootloops happened on 505 though but the general consensus is the newer G4 you have the less chances for bootloop. Again there is no definite answer. We do not know the dirty details. We don't know which S/N is safe and if LG fixed the problem and from which S/N and after they did. We purely rely on public reports to draw conclusions. Up until now 6xx seems safe with only 1 or 2 ppl reported a bootloop on Reddit. Just make a backup and keep your data on the SD card. If you get a bootloop contact LG. They seem to be aware of the issue and fixing all broken phones even out of warranty some times.

yes theres a high chance it may bootloop.. and no UK wont repair your phone.. you must shipped to the country you got it from .. i say return. and get a phone with 6xx serial number.. there less reports with those serial numbers..

I had taiwan h815 yes it did bootloop eventually there are reported 509s in bootloop also if u bought it used u wont have warranty from uk only taiwan that is if u have the original receipt n the warranty card in the box n u must have a friend in taiwan too who can go to lg center n have it replaced n i tried email n phone they didnt help me ... If ur going to use it longer period like a year forget it lots of frustration

I'm in the UK and have the same problem - a bootlooping TWN H815. It was purchased used last year, so no receipt or warranty card. I was wondering whether you had explored paying LG for an out-of-warranty repair? At this stage I'm looking at the best way of cutting my losses.

In US cost of repairs alone is 200US$ cuz of morherboard replacement either that or which u can get a used g4 at the same price so even if ur bootloops there is no point of fixing it....all i can say for u is to wait for atleast an year after the bootloop so the prices fall down for repairs....there is no way u can send it to taiwan also there is no warranty n recepit thats only even if u have a friend there...
Avoiding heat
Hi all am in same boat. Got a EU H815 an 506 hw1.0 and until a week ago had never heard about bootloop issue. I've had unlocked bootloader, rooted with custom ROMs nearly whole ownership and as a result have never had any heat up issues. After reading 100s of pages of the issue my conclusion is that it seems to be heat that affects a soldered component which eventually fails. So based on this theory I'm using Kernel Adiutor to control the throttling when CPU temp gets >55degc. It is only an educated guess but does seem logical. Hope it helps others

Definitely the cause. I did always notice with stock ROMs Genisys etc my phone got hotter than CM and logically it makes sense so I'm sticking with it :fingers-crossed:

Seems like the issue calmed down over the winter in the northern hemisphere. And now that the summer is in full bloom people are looping like crazy. Im hoping between being almost as far north as one gets in usa. So like 85 far. Is blazing here. Plus me doing the thermal mod im keeping my device cool enough to make it as i have no waranty so a mb replacement costs me about 200 dollars american.
I have a s6 and a couple other mid range devices. I wont hesitate to toss my g4 in the trash. I got mine on a trade in from my g3 i only paid like 150 for my g4 so nope not me. Unless i get one cheap.
If this was an automobile this would be a recall i dont understand why these devices arent recalled.

they are all bad as far as i know. And yes, nobody has this phone as its later revisions bootlooped after warranty and its more expensive to repair this piece of crap than what it is worth even after repairing.

Hi. My LG G4 has started boot looping. I presume that this is the known motherboard issue. LG offered to fix the phone under warranty. After 2 weeks the phone was returned to me with no documentation, which was a bit strange. When I tried the phone, it boot looped. I contacted LG to ask why, and they stated that my phone is rooted so they will not repair it. I have never rooted the phone, and have owned it from new. LG stated that they determined it was rooted by "scanning rooting files, which is basically security software built into the Android OS to flag if a handset has been rooted before". This is either a lie, or a mistake. Is there a way that I can check this myself so that I can prove that it isn't rooted? Thanks.

Just a quick question: where do you live? I ask because there are different rules for repairing.
Thanks for the reply. I live in the UK. Unfortunately I have hit a brick wall with LG who have advised that if I wish to contest the alleged root, I will have to refer to Trading Standards. My phone is absolutely not rooted, unless LG rooted it. The kind of replies back from LG are as follows:
"Sadly when the handset was in our repair centre our engineers run some software to check for possible rooting of a handset, this checks for rooting files, these are security files that are on the Android OS, this also gives us a code showing the rooting cause the number for your handset was 1000002, showing that rooting files had been activated."
"unfortunately it would seem like the phone has been rooted. This may of been an application that you have downloaded however the original software is no longer on the handset."
"The error code I previously provided you means that the superuser command has been activated, this can either be activated by you or an application (the application would normally be used to remove bloat ware). "
It's very annoying considering that my phone is not rooted and the problem is irrelevant to root anyway. They have point blank refused to repair under warranty so I will now have to fight this from another direction. In the meantime, I have no phone! Needless to say, this will be my last LG purchase.

Thank you for these links. Even with this information, I fear that LG UK will still insist that I go through Trading Standards. I will try one more time with LG with this new information and then take it further legally if necessary. It seems that there is no point in me arguing with LG over root, so I will try this new approach and see what they say. I am still denying root though as I genuinely have never rooted the phone!

I agree that companies do sometimes make mistakes. It is how they deal with these mistakes that concerns me. I don't have a problem with a company that produces a phone with a widespread faulty motherboard. It's how they deal with that fault is how I judge them. Unfortunately, LG are failing miserably here. Maybe I have just been lucky, but over the last few years I have pretty much always received excellent customer service, especially on the rare occasion that I have had to return something. However, this experience with LG has taken me a bit by surprise and seems to go against the way that a lot of companies deal with customers. Anyway, I have gone from the LG G2 (I am using that now!) to the LG G4 and I presume that I will not be getting the LG G4 working any time soon so I will be looking for a new phone ..... which definitely will not be LG! I will keep you updated. Thanks for the replies!

Yes, this is possible and would explain the situation as it stands. I have specifically asked LG on numerous occasions for the evidence of the results of the scan that they performed on my phone, but nothing has been given to me. It is rather frustrating to say the least!
I sent my phone to LG with bootloader unlocked, ... and they repaired it without further ado. lol

Unfortunately LG are not accepting that the phone is not rooted so I will try and format the phone back to stock in the hope that this will remove the so called root. Is this a simple process? I am currently on Marshmallow and not rooted.

I have heard similar stories. Maybe it's the luck of the draw, maybe LG are taking a different strategy as I have also heard of shortage of supply of motherboards. Who knows, but my phone wasn't even rooted!
Simple question, just ask how they know phone is rooted.
You must see they procedure, if they didnt want to show it, they just bluffing.

I'm in the UK too. When mine bootlooped it was running CM13 and a custom kernel (I can't recall which) and it was repaired without question.

I don't know where you brought yours but if it was there then take it into a store.

Bootloop is hardware failure, you cannot format and install to stock to fix, cos they will do that if they can.

I did ask for proof and they sent a screenshot of their software they used for my phone which said "Rooting" on it. That's all they could provide.
I have now managed to install stock on the phone as it does boot up for a few minutes sometimes, before looping again.

Maybe I should have done this from the start. The phone was bought outright from Vodafone online on a pay as you go, but I have never used their network. Not sure if they would be happy with that!

Have you verified that it is not the battery?
LG batteries are known to die after about a year..
On my old G3, I had the same issue due to a bad battery...

Is there a way to easily check this? The phone still bootloops on full charge and whilst plugged in. I haven't tried another battery though.
