anyone switching - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

To the Galaxy s8 plus. I won't It looks like a nice phone but we all know Samsung and Knox and stuff..Just want to hear from others

I'm not ever going back to Samsung. Too much garbage loaded on their phones and if you root and take it off Knox blows up and you're stuck if you ever have a warranty problem.

Nope, fool me once, not getting anymore chances.

I'm waiting to see what the Note 8 has. I really like the pen and the features it comes with.

I gave the Note 7 a chance after having my last samsung be Note 4, hated it... I was so glad when they announced the recall. I was coming from the 6P and my 6P was faster and smoother than the N7 by a long shot. I did buy the LG G6 just to see how LG felt and I really liked the way it felt in my hands and overall smoothness of it right away... Not sure how they hold up over time like my Pixel has. Wasnt a fan of the power button being on the back tho of the G6. I'm sure I would get use to it but just was awkward for the couple days I used it.

I had the lg g2 and g3, would probably have gone g6 if the pixel XL I got from Verizon had not been unlockable, (came with 7.1). The only drawback to me is I keep trying to use the fingerprint sensor like I did the power button on my lg's, since they are in the same place.

I see yeah I love my pixel XL so glad mine was able to bootloader unlock I'm on Verizon. S8 has a nice screen that's all they got imo

Me too but damn it looks like all of the US models with the snapdragon processor will not be able to have their bootloaders unlocked even the SIM unlocked model directly from Samsung. It's so depressing.

This Pixel is the first phone I've been able to root in at least two years. I'm used to it at this point.

S8 is pretty much the S7 with a battery that supposedly won't blow up. That's the new upgrade. It won't explode lol.

Pixel/XL is riddled with game breaking bugs. And Google is doing nothing to fix it - every new update only introduces new bugs. I'm definitely switching. To what, I don't know.
Something that actually has hardware features (cause this Pixel XL has NONE) and isn't riddled with bugs.

The lack of wireless charging in the Pixel is awful. That would have been so easy to implement.

I can see folks not liking the lack of wireless charging, but personally I hated it. It has probably improved, but mine was super finnicky about device placement and would often start charging, only to stop five mins later.

I'm waiting for Note 8 and see what comes of it. I had Note 4 then gave it to wife to get the Note 7 but then ended up on Pixel XL but I haven't had any issues with it and its best running phone I've ever had. If anything I'll be passing this one along to my wife again.

Pixel has a partly aluminum back, therefore impossible to implement.

I'm trying the G6 as well, and I'm really close to taking it back bacause if the power button. Not a huge deal to wake the device but a real pain in the ass to pit it to sleep. Granted there is double tap to sleep but only works reliably on the stock launcher which ive given up on.

only thing i like more is the less bezels of the s8 and the waterproofing. Dont need the raw processing speed and the pixel will still be faster in every day tasks.
If anything ill wait for the S9 or the next pixel.

They didn't have to make the back part aluminum and there is a part that is glass, so it is not impossible.

Maybe if they made the entire back of glass and put the receiver under the glass....who else did that for the last few years? oh yeah SAMSUNG, so I guess you should get the s8 I don't care for wireless charging, used it a few times on the n6 and that was it. It was more of a "cool" factor than anything. Even if the pixel had it, I would not use it....
I won't be getting the s8, I haven't bought a samsung device since the s3 (when they started rolling out knox, i switched to my nexus 5).

Love the spen so I'd consider note 8 but locked bootloader is totally unacceptable in my book. Plus I've been absolutely spoiled by speed and fluidity of pixel so even without bl issue the decision would be tough but spen and unlocked bl would likely be enough.

OP3 or S7 Edge Exynos?

Which would you choose and why?

Yeah, I figured as much. Was hoping to hear from people on the fence perhaps.
I think it depends a lot on how you use your phone and what your budget is. They both make phone calls, they both run all the same apps (mostly)...If you have the extra couple hundred bucks for the S7 edge and you want to use features like Samsung Pay and stuff like that then the S7 is awesome. But if you want to run something more open source like an AOSP based rom or Cyanogenmod and save a couple hundred bucks at the same time I think the OP3 is the best phone out at this moment. I haven't been over to the S7 forums but traditionally developer support for the Exynos has been pretty sucky, not sure if that has improved recently.
Really for the S7 Edge you are paying a premium for the "extra" features of Samsung's software. In my opinion there is way less of a reason to put custom ROMs on a Galaxy S phone anymore because since Marshmallow the proprietary software on the Samsung devices is actually pretty decent. But for tweaking, hacking, playing with firmwares the OP3 is top of the heap atm, at least until the new HTC Nexus' drop.
I ditched my S7 Edge Exynos because:
1. I never really liked its camera and all the post processing that it did to the photos.
2. I know reviewers say it has the best camera but I never really liked Samsung's decision to move to 12mp camera. I actually liked the camera of Note 5 best.
3. That physical home button makes navigation slower. OnePlus 3 got the buttons right and navigation is much faster.
4. Yes Touchwiz has become faster and I never experienced any lag, I still felt like I didn't really need all features
5. Note 7 will be out very soon and as you may know, Samsung devices lose value and become obsolate once new flagship comes out.
On the other hand, OnePlus 3 has just an average display and an average battery size (which I think that should have been bigger), however I still manage to get very close SOT to what I used to get with the Edge and Oxygen OS has been optimized really well. Also, I prefer the 16mp camera because picture detail is there even after zoom in. I also missed stock android and a device which I could root and still not lose warranty. At the end it is up to the user. Whether you like Touchwiz or stock android. I should should give credit to Oneplus 3 for using real metal, strong metal. Huawei used soft metal on the Nexus 6P and I couldn't stand that phone. Battery life was just average also.

I have both as per my signature. The decision to change my P9000 for the Op3 as a second driver was more difficult than I thought. The sRGB update did it in the end.
The Edge was always going to stay.

Disagree. The 12mp galaxy camera resolves more detail IMO despite the mp disadvantage. - Dont like the processing ... ? Shoot raw.
As to older Samsung's becoming obsolete ... Here in the UK the S6 series is still sold amongst the new line and it looks like it will continue to do so for some time.

They still get sold of course but Samsung doesn't keep them top priority in the update list. Also I use RAW ehen I have my DSLR. I like my phones to point and shoot without putting too much thought into it. Glad you like the 12mp camera better though. I still prefer the 16mp cameras.

I think if you get the oneplus at this moment you're going to regret your decision. the release of the next nexus isn't far off. By that time your oneplus wouldn't be worth much.

You actually got a point about the not bring easy sell part lol. I keep changing phones everytime a new one comes out. Will see how long it takes me to get tired of the Oneplus 3. I know that I am always excited about Samsung phones, but then they feel nothing special. I am sure I would have sticked to Nexus 6P if battery wasn't so poor due to the SD810 processor or the cheap metal they used to build that phone.

You are in a oneplus 3 forum. If you want a locked bootloader unless you get the international version then get the s7. If you want a phone that is a pain in the ass to root and unstable after you root it then get a s7. If you want a gangster ass phone with 6gb of ram and the best developer support that I've ever seen then get the oneplus 3
I have got Galaxy S7... +Gear VR..
I'm thinking about OP 3..but I live my Galaxy S7...
If we get Miui on it,(my god) S7 be the best phone ever...
I think I will wait for the next Nexus....

#2 is same as me, Note 5 and Lg g4/g5 are superior cameras imo. The s7's processing is horrible

Overall speed

Would you say that the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Imo performance is a bit low compare to the price

Can you elaborate?
What tab S4? It doesn't exist.
6000 mah is not a limited battery you just gotta be smart enough to know when Power saver works for you. Lasts me 7-9 hours on full brightness playing a HDR video and I binge watch with 5 min breaks each hour so yeah. Software, well unless you're an artist I don't get what software you need I mean ipad has similar software and an artist or architect even know which software to use because they're working in industry so.
Why not get the Galaxy book 12 then? Well the tab has everything for laptop use except maybe a full version of AutoCAD and Photoshop but Android version is sufficient. Also unless you're a gamer... There is really nothing the tab can't do and with Android coding and development of apps and such can be done straight from it! Unless you're just a rich fat kid who just enjoys daddy's ?.
Achieve what? Well it isn't offering anything less than an ipad and everything is there to do which can be done on a computer as in productivity so also the AMOLED display means zero eye strain or redding. Plus perfect blacks. If you want to take the easy route and not learn Android properly for industrial use then that's your problem!
HDR OLED display. The best stylus. GREAT for content consumption and productivity. Great for even testing apps unless you're developing windows apps in which case you shouldn't even be trying it from Android in the first place! Plus with cloud gaming, there is nothing left.
Honestly as a developer and coder and hacker I don't see why I need to use a computer when I got this, in fact I never buy tablets and GALAXY BOOK 12 is kinda useless... Also I've been using my computer only once a few weeks so yeah.
See attachments. I got anti glare screen protector. Fintie spen holding case. A basesus flexible neck tablet holder. A Logitech k380 keyboard. What else could I want for. Oh, I also write books and lemme tell you it's so much better when it doesn't hang or crash and I end up losing my work. Not happened even once with the tab!
I bet English isn't your native or even bilingual language or you might just have a low IQ, in any case you'll have a heard time understanding please do comment so others have a laugh at you. Also I got a 205 IQ, so kid... Step aside... The Mensan is coming through... And he's way, way younger than you.

I don't have any lags as such. You've got to describe faster as I don't see how an 810 SOC with heating issue doesn't throttle performance.
It's on specs the best Android tablet you can get... And it performs as such. I have had no major issues with it.
Everyday use it seems just fine to me. And my everyday use is pretty hardcore. Developer level stuff
Not that I have to describe anything for you. If someone says "this thing is slow", don't come into the thread and say "you're wrong". If you don't have this problem, why are you even in the thread?
Things that are demonstrably slower.
The time from when I press the power button to when the screen comes up.
Responsiveness when I swipe the screen to enter the pin
Time it takes for the app drawer to open after pressing the app button on the home screen.
Time it takes to launch an app.

I don't have any lag with this tablet. I rooted it the first day I received it which removes encryption... Maybe the users that are having lag are still encrypted.. Over all I'm happy with it. The screen on it is the best I've seen on any tablet imo.

correction: I play on the ipad pro only. The S3 is painful to play so I stopped.
also, everything is slow.
it's like the S3 uses a harddisK instead of SSD.

iPad Pro 2017 might not be that much faster as s3 tab, the difference could be that those games are better optimize for iOS. On any event, the conversation started regarding faster than s3 tab ANDROID device, not over all. But thank you for your input.

LG V30 battery life thread

As no one has started a better life thread yet, I thought I'd start one. Mine has been great and today is no exception.
most phones do well on wi-fi. I'd love to see the results from a day on mobile data. That separates the wheat from the chaff

This is with only a couple hours on Wi-Fi. Mostly data and half the time spent inside a building at work

My bad wrong time on battery picture.
The one with 18 hours off battery I had over 7 hours screen on time
That's how it should look
So this was mostly on WiFi. There was about an hour where I was in town shopping and not on WiFi at all.

Wow! You got the highest SOT of the V30 I have seen so far! Very impressive! Shows how long WiFi and a dark Theme can stretch battery on a good phone!
This is my best so far. It was on WiFi 95% of the time and 70% brightness basically the entire time. If do 50% brightness and a dark amoled theme I am confident I could surpass 9 hours of screen on time. I have seen no other flagship with battery screen on time this high.
i'm getting 7-8 hrs sot consistently, pretty amazing
Ya, I am really impressed with the battery SOT. My Nexus 6p would get less then half of that.

You came from a 6P? Are you happy with it? I've got a 6P too and my V30 will be here on Tuesday. Just nervous about the switch from stock to LG's skin.
Are you even hoping for a stock rom once root is available, it are you liking it?

So if you throw Nova or pixel launcher on it, it looks just like stock. You won't notice the lg stuff at all. I was a Nexus use myself and absolutely love this phone.

I'm using the Pixel 2 Launcher right now on my 6P, but since it's a Nexus, I get to keep my Google now panel.
The only reason I even have my 6P rooted is so I can enable night lite. Otherwise, I wouldn't care to even have the stock Google Now launcher, but if I'm rooting I may as well do it all and go full Pixel Mods.
If I can use Nova or the Pixel 2 Launcher with root at some point I think I'm going to love it. I don't want to use another rom because you'll lose a lot of camera quality.
You've just made my nerves settle down though saying that you don't even notice the change that much with just a simple launcher swap.
Is there anything you like on it specifically? Like, "Damn glad I didn't get a Pixel because I wouldn't even have this LG feature."

Thanks! I'm really excited for it and just kind want some answers to calm my nerves about my first non-stock Android phone....in a long time.
The only phone I had that wasn't "stock" android was a Droid X waaayyy back in the day when I was still crazy enough to be on Verizon ?. I went from a Palm Pre Plus, to a Droid X, to a Nexus 4, then N6, and finally my 6P. So again, I'm just nervous.
But I went into a T-Mo store and played with it for a bit and then camera is absolutely amazing and it was fast and fluid as hell even with the demo mode. PLUS, it's so much smaller than the 6P due to the decreased bezels which is awesome.
I'll definitely miss my front firing speakers though, for sure.
There is a thread here.

You do know you can get the Nova launcher with the Google now screen without root right? Google it. I'm I using it right now.

Oh yes, I do know that. I actually used it for a little while on my 6P during the O previews if the actual Pixel Mods weren't updated quickly enough. It'd be nice if there was just a "Pixel/Nexus Mode" built into it though. There are just so many damn customization options that it's like IFTTT or Tasker for me. I'd rather spend the 5-10 minutes getting root and installed a few flashables then dig through menus and sub-menus of Nova. However, the one thing I do really like about Nova (and the reason I paid for premium) is because you can backup an exact config. So you can have one setup for the weekend with trail hiking/gps apps up front, and then back to outlook/messaging apps during the week, and lastly have all the casting and entertainment apps readied up in the evenings at home.
All in all though, I just like having the legit Pixel launcher installed. But if I want to keep the Google Now pane I may have to change how I do things.
It's shipping to the office tomorrow morning and we receive all of our UPS by 10:30-11am everyday, so I'll have the majority of the work day to get things how I like them and we'll just have to see!
Thanks!
More battery life means you need more control means installing Greenify and going pro with Greenify to sleep system apps . . . . . and then finally ( because we all are not rooted yet . . . ) do the developer plus ADB step to allow Greenify more privileges.
.
The play store also has many "disable ( LG ) apps" - app -and- it/they also require you to do the developer plus ADB step to allow it more privileges . . .
.
Go figure

How does the Pixel 2 XL perform?

So I was thinking about picking one up on eBay to use. Can anyone tell me how the phone is performing now? Has the Display improved? How's the battery life?
It is still the best phone money can buy.
Faster than a speeding bullet!
I have been using the XL since months, my device has the blue tint, but you have to really look for it in order to see it. The speakers shrill at 100% volume, for my choice of songs at least, still hasn't been a problem. Now the good parts :
The device is awesome. Been using Android P since the first Dev preview and it is great.
Battery life is just steller. Around 5 hours of SoT.
I used to root the device the moment I took it out of the box, Nexus 6P, even the OP5 was the same. But this has stayed unrooted. Stock is for the first time just adequate for me. And seeing the pixel 3 leaks, this phone will not be replaced for another year. If you do want to get one, don't trust me, but I'd buy one considering it'd be cheaper for you now than it was for me. But the phone is just worth it. Buy a cover of you want it pristine though. Mine has scratches and dents at all corners. Won't have it any other way though.
It's a pretty perfect experience. Display is awesome and phone is fast as lighting

Yeah I've been looking at the prices and there going for around 375-450$ on eBay for a used model in good condition. I'm hoping eBay will have one of those sale's when they take 20% off everything.
Screen is slightly bluish at extreme viewing angles. Doesn't bother me even when I do see it which only when I'm trying to see it.
Performance is just fine. Very fast. No complaints.
Battery life varies. One day it will be fine. The next day similar use will result in noticably decreased battery life. After the Pie update battery life was terrible but a factory reset brought it back to what it was before.
I have had a reoccurring issue with the headphone adapter. Sometimes it won't be detected at all. Other times it will be detected but only when plugged in one way. Other times both ways work. It's the same for the stock charger. Sometimes plugging it only charges when plugged in one way but flipping it won't charge.
It's showing its age. My panda is starting to lag and freeze for about 3 seconds Evey now and then when I open an app

Ouch that sucks man but it possibly could be a rogue app? I have had mine since release day and I don't have any lockups and I have quite a few apps installed as well.
It's a possibility. But even someone like MKHD has said his pixel 2 XL has begun to lag. So I don't think it's only my device and I don't feel like wiping data to see if it helps. Someone shouldn't have to do something like that to fix their phone IMO.

I had the same issue with my charging port. Take a toothpick or a pinand clean it out. Most likely it is plugged up a bit. It's actually pretty common. Just be careful when doing it

Be careful that it isn't a Verizon model, those are bootloader locked and can't be rooted. It must be a phone that originally came straight from Google to be sure.
Maybe the doesn't care about rooting. I picked up mine on eBay when they had a 15% off sale. Couldn't pass it up @ $399 and it's been great overall. At that time the Verizon models were selling for like $490-500

It could be a batch of phones with subpar flash memory I wouldn't be shocked. I wonder if all are using Samsung storage? I know some devices have Micron for the ram. Does your device have Micron or Samsung storage and ram? You can check this information at the bootloader.

Not sure. So I would Boot into bootloader and it'll be one of the lines on the default screen? My lag isn't as bad as MKHD described it. It is noticable and does exist.

Same o' FP sensor as in S10? Very disappointing.

3D Sonic Max... bait and switch?
Uhh, the 3D Sonic Max was introduced in december of 2019 so there's literally no way it could've been on the S10...
What's even more disappointing is the facial recognition.... not impressed...
I can say I had a launch S10 and the fingerprint sensor was garbage.
I got my S20 and set it up and its 1000x better.
If it's the same sensor then Qualcomm must've fixed up the firmware algorithms or Samsung has better software.
Seems OK but never used the S10 phone with the other sensor only the A50 i've tried it on. Not sure if its slower or a little more picky than my S9+ yet but time will tell.
never had any issues with S10's fps and S20's fps also works fine. Maybe user error?
I had both s10 plus and now s20 plus. They are the same in speed after s10 had the fix. Too fast if you ask me.

I created a profile that has both thumbs in it. Just switched left and right thumb every time it asked for another scan. Seemed to improve accuracy.

That's right, same o' same o' references the disappointing fingerprint sensor found on S10 and Note 10 models.. Then, there was a rumor, before the release of Note 10, about this new, super-duper 3D Sonic Max many people hoped to have on Note 10, when that didn't happen everyone thought(myself included) the S20 will get it, but still, as we can see – no cigar.
