Multi window Pop-up question - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooti

Hi,
The main thing I love the Galaxy Notes is the multi-window feature. Especially the pop-up window option.
I've read that since Android Nougat that's built-in into Android (it's called Freeform there). But the main difference is that Freefrom just give you a small pop-up window with every item in the app still being very large like it was full screen (the same thing Windows computers do when you make an app smaller). The Samsung approach is a pop-up windows which actually make every aspect of the app look smaller. I hope I'm making myself clear.
Will the Note 8 use the Android implementation of the pop-up window functionality, or it's own Samsung implementation?
Thanks!

I donno, you should ask note 8 peeps not us.
I think you may not be explaining the Note 8.0 multi window properties well.
I disable mini app from tray in portrait mode, and only use multi window when I drag particular apps from the tray.
Then resize the top or bottom window accordingly to the app that does not get squishy. Not all apps resize, like calculator is big.
In landscape mode I have options to choose cards between the two apps. Any more apps in windows becomes troublesome with switching. My fingers are too big.
Task manager does all I need for most apps between switching.

How do you mean, this is the Note 8 forum so who are you then
Here are pictures of what I mean.
Samsung does this:

Android does this:
When you resize the pop-up window with Samsung's interface, the app stays in full screen, but the window gets smaller, so everything about the app gets smaller (smaller font, ...).
When you you that with Android Nougat built-in interface, everything in the app stays the same (font size, ...) but the window gets smaller. This forces you to scroll inside the window to be able to see the whole app.

I've had the chance of testing the Note 8, and apparently Samsung doesn't scale the content of the app, only the app window. Is there a way to get the app to scale as well?

You guys have a phone not a Note 8.0
I get scaling... though I am on KK on a Note 8.0
What is cool is the Tab 4 drawer on the Note 8.0 is smaller and auto launches all apps from it in a window, so you don't need to drag.

Because it is the latest bug free stock firmware, and does what I need on a 4 year old tablet.

[APP][FLIP LAUNCHER] quick app access [2.1+]

Android devices are meant for multitasking. Some devices, like the Galaxy Note 2,
are specifically designed to launch two apps, or more, at the same time.
The Google Play Store also offers a variety of multitasking apps to allow
you to multitask on your device. The FlipLauncher app is a multitasking app
that allows you to group your favorite apps or shortcuts and access them
from wherever on your device.
get the extremely usefull app HERE
When you launch FlipLauncher in portrait mode, 6 colored bars (i use one) will appear
on the left side of your screen. These bars serve as your virtual drawer
containing your apps and shortcuts. Just swipe to open those bars.
You can set up to 4 apps or shortcuts on each bar, giving you a total
of 24 apps or shortcuts.

}
The app also allows you to personalize the bars on your device’s screen.
You can change a bar’s color, adjust its width, set its placement, and
set its opacity. You can even disable one or two bars. These virtual drawers
really look like the Multi Window feature of the Galaxy Note 2 but arranged horizontally.
The app also has a different layout when you hold your device in landscape mode.
In this screen orientation, 4 colored bars (again i only use one) will appear on the left
side of the screen. Each bar allows you to place 6 apps or shortcuts, giving you still a
total of 24 apps.Just like the previous orientation, you can still change a bar’s color,
transfer the bar to the opposite side, adjust its width, and set its opacity. You can also
remove some bars according to your liking.

Just got done downloading and messing around with it. A+ app. I love this app. It is so nice to be able to have all those shortcuts right at your fingertips regardless of what screen or app you are in.
Thanks for your hard work.
at first I was thinking UGH...Another Launcher. I love my ADW.. But this is is a VERY cool app. and the best part is is works alongside my ADW!!! ill have to load it up later this evening. I like a clean home screen.
I'm having issues with your app. It allows me to pull the tray out once but then after that when untouched the tray I just get a small haptic feedback and nothing else. I have to close it.

Found this App, in the market. Comparative to the one listed earlier, but I find this one easier to use.

will it work alongside Nova Launcher?
i'm running nova launcher on my gNote and love it, but i'd like to have this running in addition to it. i hesitate to run two launchers at the same time, and am wondering if this hesitation is justified? (i see the comment above about ADW launcher but my question still stands if it's a good idea or not)

Multi window and S pen

Hi,
Any ideas for best practices for the features of multi windows and the S pen (the feature that enable u to open a small window of several options
Please share your usage I'm new on android new on samsung new on tablets...
Thx in advance

I have yet to find much practical use for the Pen Wendow, but for multi-window, I love using Chrome and Gmail side by side. If I click on a link in an email, it will open up on the other side of the screen.
I imagine YouTube and any other productivity app would great if you want to watch or listen to something while working on something else.

I use ezpdf to read cases and s note to take notes in class. Then I use pen window with hangouts and calculator on top of them

I can't seem to open chrome with multi - window? It was working fine yesterday but when I tried it this morning it had stopped I think it was because I did a chrome update, any of yous having this problem?
I currently have the original note 10.1. with the Play Store App Multi Window Manager, from the play store, I can multi-windows Any app at all. Also, besides doing side by side multi-window, I can cascade numerous multi-window apps.
Can this new model do that? From the pictures and the manual, they have made a lot of changes to that feature.
Thanks
On rooted device you can open any app side by side. Cascading option is gone, but you can add any app to pen window list.

OK, but from your screencap, it does look like you can at least open more than just two side by sides, Correct? Can't understand why they would take options (cascade) away. Makes little sense to me. I use a Multi Window Manager on my current Original Note 10.1, so I do know about being able to add pretty much any app at all. The one I use it not yet compatible with the 10.1 2014, but there is another that is.
Thanks for the reply
Yes, you can open more than 2. It is similar to original Note's cascading option but now it's controlled through pen window. There is a program to add any app you want to that window list.

OK, that helps a lot.

I would like to add the usefulness of GMD Gesture Control, not just for tablets in general, but for Pen Window as well. You need to be rooted, but without root (and having every app available on Pen Window), Pen Window seems pretty useless anyway. With Gesture Control you can add a gesture to open Pen Window directly, which saves a lot of steps. I don't always use the S Pen, and I always hated the fact that to use Pen Window, I had to take the S Pen out, press the button, select Pen Window, draw on the screen, THEN select the app, and put the S Pen back in, all with a few seconds of lag sprinkled in between. Too many steps to make it useful in many situations.
As for usage, I mostly use it when I need to reference something while in another app (documents in Evernote, timer app, calculator, etc), and don't want close the current app for whatever reason. I like the minimize function of Pen Window, as I can just minimize when I don't need it, and open it with one press when I do; especially useful when you have to reference it multiple times while working.
To sum it up, Pen Window without root = useless (too few apps), Pen Window w/ root, Pen Window Manager (or equivalent app) and GMD Gesture Control = ultimate win.
this app looks interesting (and states it doesn't need root): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.xperiacle.penwindowlauncher
"PEN Window Launcher allows you to invoke the Pen Window drawer without using the Spen. It removes the hassle of having to take out your Spen, hover and click the Spen on the screen, clicking the Pen Window icon and then drawing a window just to open the Pen Window drawer. With this app, it takes you just one to two clicks with your finger to open the Pen Window drawer. How more productive is that."

is it true that the limit is 6?

Dex usage

So being able to use Dex directly on the tab is extremely beneficial but I'm having a difficult time typing on the small on screen keyboard as I haven't been able to get the keyboard case as yet. Have 2 questions:
1- Is there a way to key the regular on screen keyboard (like when using regular Android and not in Dex mode) when you're in Dex mode?
2- Being able to resize all windows in Dex is great but is there any way to have them snap to the edges similar to windows? Any 3rd party app would do.
Thanks in advance

To number 1 yes. Open keyboard, click down arrow on right, click modes, pick your fav.
To number 2, not that I've found.
A note I actually have better luck with apps resizing in tablet mode, they just dont start windowed. DeX mode message to restart apps when going fullscreen is too annoying.

Go to Dex labs and enable the experimental feature that allows resizing of almost any app. This should reduce the amount of apps that require a restart when resizing apps in Dex mode.
Actually I found that if you do the dex labs switch then you turn on the google developer option "force all activities to be resizeable" AND THEN you go to about dex and click on that a bunch of times, it actually make all apps work nearly properly in dex mode.
Only last issue with dex is that it won't work in portrait so when I start a reading app that I want in portrait I can't use it. They should look at how windows handle rotation.
No option to change keyboard type when in Dex mode

Question Horizontal split screen in Portrait orientation

My question is, is there a way to have a split screen mode in portrait orientation where the apps are above/below each other, instead of left and right? Just like how a phone would handle this.
What i have right now
What i want
Each window has a handle, but you can only swap they position, instead of changing the alignment.
Thanks!
If you turn off miui optimizations you'd get the normal split screen but I noticed the 3 fingers screenshot won't work also.

Worked, thanks!
*EDIT2:*
If someone arriving to this thread later on, i'm on version 12.5.8.
Also as i seems, disabling the optimization, you have to give up on floating windows too.
EDIT3:
since MIUI 13, disabling the optimization, won't disable floating windows.
Unfortunately this wasn't fixed in MIUI 13, which is pretty disappointing.

In the latest version of miui 13 by disabling the optimization does it still allow you to do the horizontal split screen?
Im thinking of buying this tablet but horizontal split screen in portrait mode is essential for me
Also can you move the split bar making one app bigger?

It still does but somehow it looks broken when you open recent app, probably using GSI rom would be better.. also split screening setting will crash the system ui, idk why..

Interesting, it's still MI UI 13 but turning off optimization split screen works in portrait. Previously you've lost the floating window feature because of that, so it's not really worth it. Although it's still broken a bit. So in landscape you can resize the apps in a 33/66 or 50% or 66/33 ratio. In portrait you only have 50% 33/66 doesn't work its snaps back to 50.

I love the xiaomi but I'm scared of the software, do videos (YouTube in full screen, netflix, chrome) still play in the split screen (portrait) while using other apps?
Also what do you mean by broken?

Sorry, forgot to answer your question.
I'm not sure about the performance difference between to two tablets, but Lenovo tab p11 pro has a OLED screen, that's a big plus. Although Xiaomi's LCD is good enough for general content consumption, but it's not good enough for HDR movies. In my country the P11 pro was 30% more expensive then the Tab5, and although i would prefer an OLED screen, i was not willing to pay that much.
You can playback two videos in two different apps in portrait split screen. I've tested this with Youtube and Twitch. What you have to keep in mind, that portrait split screen is stuck in 50-50% app ratio. You have no option to change it to 33/66% which you can do in horizontal.

Question Android 12L update in US?

Thanks for that clarification. The API level for this build is 32. And now I am starting to see the Taskbar. Not sure why it didn't appear immediately after I installed the update.
Now I understand why the Taskbar is only appearing intermittently. I have been using Nova Launcher. Evidently the Taskbar is unreliable unless one uses the One UI Launcher. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. (Probably an update to Nova Launcher will be needed.)
What's the difference between the task bar and the edge panel as far as what they do? I use edge panel all the time to drag apps into pop-up or occasionally split-screen view, and that's what I've read the same thing the task bar does. I really miss the downloadable edge panels from my previous Samsung, though!

As far as I can tell, the Taskbar works similarly to Windows and the Mac dock: icons appear in the Android Taskbar when you are running (or recently ran) an app. You tap on any icon in the Taskbar to switch to it. This seems like an alternative to the recent apps virtual button in Android's navigation. The main advantage is that the icons are continuously visible.

Thanks! I haven't installed the update yet, but it has been asking me to. When I get the moment to, I will. From the update list, seems like there are some nice improvements!
Yep, on my unlocked Z Fold3 and Verizon Z Fold2. Who needs a Z Fold4 now when it's the same OS lol
I updated yesterday. I tried to get used to the task bar, but I couldn't stand it after a few minutes. Just way too distracting with so many icons of different colors across the bottom. If they'd turned them all grayscale, maybe it wouldn't be as bad, but nope. Also really bad for screen burn-in, which I don't want to risk on this phone anymore than I already do with having to use an on-screen keyboard (it got a little burned in on my last phone). (I recently looked at my dad's phone and he plays Scrabble so much on it that the game board is burned into his Note phone [I don't know what number it is]. )
just tap and hold the task bar (e.g. on the bottom right) and it disappears.
Tap and hold again, and it will be back ...
Might be easier to turn it off in settings.
If you want to get rid of it permanently, yes ...
