[GUIDE] Root Huawei Honor 6X and install TWRP custom recovery (EMUI 5.X) - Honor 6X Guides, News, & Discussion

Note-
Applicable for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10
Similar steps are applicable for EMUI 4.X as well but TWRP file will change.
Hi Folks,
There are few threads but most of them are old or for EMUI 4.X and users having issues while rooting on EMUI 5.0. Saw many new users and old as well struggling with rooting and installing the custom recovery on their Honor 6X model with EMUI 5.0. I followed the steps mentioned or as applicable for any devices and I did not face any issue so though of compiling this guide for new users who may have faced issue or not able to root the phone.
Users are very much aware of the rooting on MM but they faced issue while rooting on EMUI 5/ Nougat.
I will just simplify the steps so that any new users can do this without any problem and without any prior experience to rooting, it may be long but will be the simple enough for all the users.
Prerequisites-
Enable the developer option in settings-
Go to Settings--> About Phone-->Tab build number 7 times to enable this setting.
Go back in setting page, just above system update, you will see a new menu as -Developer Options
Scroll for the debugging section and enable the USB Debugging
You will be prompted for the confirmation with RSA key, just accept it.
Enable OEM Unlock in Developer Options (just above the USB debugging option) – Most probably this option will not be there on EMUI 5.0 (only few have seen on EMUI but it was there on EMUI 4.1 for all but rarely on EMUI 5.0)
Please note down you build number, this may become handy in case something goes wrong to restore your phone via DLOAD. In Settings- About phone- Build Number
Installation of required Drivers.
Connect your phone to PC and install Hi Suite on PC and it will additionally install all the necessary drivers to PC and HiSUite on Mobile.
Download and Install ADB from Link
Accept all the prompts and install ADB drive system wise.
Once installation is completed, if default options are chosen, it will be under C:\adb
Downloading the necessary files.
Download TWRP from Link Thanks to @OldDroid for his Original Thread and @surdu_petru & @XePeleato- This was not possible without their excellent work.
Move the downloaded file under C:\adb or wherever you have installed the ADB.
Download the SuperSU file from this Link and put it in SD card or keep handy on PC so that you can copy to internal memory later.
Get the unlock as mentioned in this thread
Actual Procedure
Unlocking the bootloader-
Backup all your data as unlocking the bootloader will reset the device and all your data will be erased.
On windows machine, go to folder C:\adb or wherever you installed the adb drivers.
Press shift+right click together and select Open command prompt here (it will be open PowerShell here on Windows 8 and Windows 10 machine)
Run - adb reboot bootloader (this command may prompt for acceptance of RSA key if not already accepted)
This will boot the phone into bootloader mode.
Run - fastboot oem unlock <16 digit unlock code- Put your actual code you obtained from Huawei site > (This step will unlock the bootloader and will erase all your data)
Phone will restart automatically.
Installing TWRP
Once on the system, open the PowerShell or command prompt again in ADB folder (can use the previous instance as well)
Run - adb reboot bootloader
Once in bootloader, Run - fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-berlin.img (This will install the TWRP recovery for EMUI 5.0 on your phone)
Once done with the flashing the TWRP, Run - fastboot reboot
Rooting
Once booted to system, open the PowerShell or command prompt in ADB folder (can use the previous instance as well)
Run - adb reboot recovery
And your phone will boot into the TWRP recovery by Open Kirin Team.
Copy the SuperU file downloaded to SD card or Internal memory.
Install the SuperSU zip.
Reboot and enjoy the complete ownership of the device with root permission and happy Flashing the custom ROMs

Mentioned in the Note as well, just a change of files.

Well done pal, bravo! Everyone could follow this guide, the only prerogative is to pay attention to the steps in order. The only thing i'd add is, other than SuperSU, the alternative for Magisk root method. Is far better than SuperSU in everything (in my opinion) and overall, it's systemless

It says command not allowed, so there must be an impediment with permissions through the flashing process. USB debugging is enabled? Bootloader is unlocked? FRP is on or off?

Flash CM13. I am lost

Hi Guys,
I feel completely lost with all the guides to flash my ZE551ML.
- Root (I counted 3 ways to it)
- Unlock the bootloader
- Install recovery (So much alternatives)
- And Finally the CM13 Rom
In some guides, there are files from April or June 2015.
I already flashed Android Devices but with the Zenfone 2 I feel anxious about all the doc around.
The way you root and the recovery you install will affecte the CM13
Is there a clear up to date step by step that tell what to do not options I can have?
Thanks
Step 1. Unlock the bootloader.
Step 2. Flash the TWRP recovery 2.8.7.0
Step 3. Download and insert CM 13 and gapps pico 6.0 x86 in your internal/sd card.
Step 4. Boot into recovery using Vol buttons + Power.
Step 5. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, system.
Step 6. Flash CM 13, and then gapps from your internal/sd card.
Step 7. Reboot system.

Thanks man,
It is more about the files to use :
To Unlock the bootloader (img file, driver and adb tools)
I see that from your steps there no need to root?
I downlaoded those files : from mega /#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw!pkVXnYLK (And they are to root only if I am not wrong)

What is your device? ZE 550 ML or 551 ML. There are official apks available on asus website for both models. Download them and install them.
Bad idea using the official unlocker it is still giving errors, I would do more research here before using the official unlocker

I Have the 551 ML Variant.
Indeed, I read here in one Thread to avoid official unlocker and this is what is causing headaches. To Many info so at the end you learn nothing.
So what do you recommend as method and with what files?
Thanks.
To unlock the bootloader through the unofficial way, your firmware has to be 2.19.40.20. If your firmware is newer than this, then you'll need to downgrade. If not, you just need to upgrade.
1. Downgrade to 2.19.40.20: http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=12528 (before downloading the firmware, check if your device is CN or WW)
You'll need to downgrade both the firmware and recovery to the same version, which is 2.19.40.20.
2. Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/zenfone-2-root-easy-t3114003
3. Unlock bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/congrats-to-bootlocker-unlocked-t3138547
4. Flash custom recovery (I chose TWRP): https://twrp.me/devices/asuszenfone2.html
Download the twrp-2.8.7.2-Z00A.img image and follow the steps under "Fastboot Install Method (No Root Required)" to flash it.
This is how I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the TWRP custom recovery on my Zenfone 2. If you follow each step as described, you'll be fine. I don't know if there's already another easier way to do these things, but this is what I followed and worked flawlessy.
Also, there is a tool called WinDroid that promisses to do all this a lot easier, BUT I haven't tested it myself, so I can't say if it really works or not: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zen...l-windroid-universal-android-toolkit-t3206907

You saved my asses because I was going to start the install and I have WW_2.20.40.156
I prefer to wait the official cyanogen release or tools working with my actual rom version.
Too Risky and Too many factors
Thanks again
The other option is to use windroid tool which has worked well to unlock the bootloader and you can also install twrp with it

I downgraded my device to 3.2.8 from nougat because of the bluetooth issues.
I just downloaded the full OTA zip of the latest Marshmallow version.
You can find the links here:
http://downloads.oneplus.net/devices/oneplus-3/page/2/
I flashed OnePlus 3 OxygenOS 3.2.8.
I am using Windows, but approach is basicaly the same in linux.
You need to setup adb on your computer, go to recovery, then in recovery options go to update from adb (not sure if its called exactly like this) and then in command prompt type:
adb sideload PathAndNameOfTheZip
Replace "PathAndNameOfTheZip" with the actual path and name of the zip file ofc
And wait for this process to be completed and reboot.
This process will wipe your data and internal storage so backup everything first.. I havent
Thanks guys, i did downgrade easy thanks for your help :good:

Well original state , Android has always had a bootloader. You cannot delete it.
Maybe you just want to unroot and relock bootloader?
This is possible. And answered in the thread. Do a search.

Couple of warnings first. If you are new to Android and rooting, you might not know, lot of times problems(bootloops) happen when you do not do it correctly.
If phone is not on full stock unrooted system then locking bootloader will cause phone to "brick".
Do you have reason to need it locked again?
Usually to unroot all you need to do is flash the stock boot.img if you are on nougat or stock Ramdisk if you are on Oreo.
Magisk manager has an unroot option that will work only if you installed root from twrp.

Yes. It's complex because of TWRP.

Thanks for the answer, i already saw this thread but as I already said I'm not a big Expert in this topic, so that guide in the thread is too complex and short for me (and for other most likely too...)
Maybe you can explain it more precisly to us?
I would be very greatful for this!
Or if you know a way too archieve what i want but loose twrp and data... I wouldn't mind. I dont Need twrp and my Phone is New... So
Thanks in advance!

You can't do it simpler. Mostly because you've got to get back to stock for the OTA.
You can do it different. Get the fastboot. Flash that (don't erase userdata). Then install Magisk and TWRP again.
Not every release gets a fastboot but 11.0.4.0 did so you have this option.
Can you explain this more for me pls?
- What exact files do I need?
- what exactly should i do with these files? (flash with terminal, TWRP, Slot A, Slot B, etc.....)
- is it relevant which version of Android 9 i have?
you would help me alot, if you explain it in detail so that i can do it.
I already tried in android 10 unlocking bootloader and flashed the "disable force encryption" but got stuck on booting screen.
Pls tell me how exactly i should do what, and i will post my results
Thanks !

Alex
Recomendations
Hello,
I just updated from Android 9 stock ROM, to Android 10 with a custom ROM.
I followed this two YouTube guides from the same user:
How to root and install TWRP:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy9Z_NN_7Tg&list=LLm7cWm_1QXORlLa5XeTETUw&index=12&t=365s
How to install custom ROM(In my case I installed Evolution X with Android 10 following these steps):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0pcmA_ew-Y&list=LLm7cWm_1QXORlLa5XeTETUw&index=13&t=173s
**Advise**
- Use the same files and versions that he uses, If you use/do something different, you are going to have some problems.
What I'm currently running on my Mi A2 Lite:
- Evolution X ROM(Android 10) -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/rom-evolution-x-3-3-t4014685
- Nitrogen Kernel r3 -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/r1-nitrogen-kernel-mi-a2-lite-t4011019
Everything has been very stable at the moment(1 week and lots of gaming and restarts and tests), so I feel fine sharing this.
Best,
delokt

Install instructions in that thread. TL;DR Run the flash_all_keeping_userdata script to upgrade to the version you downloaded. 11.0.4.0 is what you want.
You have Magisk and TWRP. Install them the same way you did before. Go read their threads if you forgot or use the last part of my guide.
Hello Friends, i have good news, i successfully updated my Phone to android 10 and keep TWRP and magisk!
I did the following steps:
- clean install of fastbood v.11.0.4. Android 10 via Mi-Flashtool
- powershell adb: fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-dees_troy-daisy.img
- TWRP should open on Mi a2 lite. go to advanced and activate adb sideload
- powershell: adb sideload twrp-installer-3.3.1-dees_troy-daisy.zip
TWRP should now be installed.
Then i tried a reboot system and got into the welcome screen, so it booted.
What i did next is, the magisk v20.4 zip file move to sd card or internal storage of the device and flash it trough TWRP.
DONE!
now your phone should reboot to system. It now has Android 10 and magisk installed and working!
Hope i can help someone else with this.
