No HDMI to USB-C because no VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode, right? - Google Pixel 2 XL Accessories

I assume like the original pixel, it does not have VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode, so there are no wired options for getting video out of a pixel 2?

oddly enuff I found an adapter here, though I do not think it will work with the pixel 2's

None of the Pixels can do video output via its USB C port.

USB C to HDMI?

Anyone have an answer to whether this is supported? Please say yes
There is an adapter cable for sale on the play store.

Will either the Nexus 5x or 6p support HDMI via the USB-C connector?

DB> Nope. But Cast mirroring to ChromeCast or Android TV has got really good. And Chromecasts are only $35. And we have new ones announced yesterday.
That's bull**** if you ask me that they didn't enable it just because they are trying to push more of their products.
Sure I have a chromecast and whatnot and I can do all of that just fine at home.. But if I go somewhere that doesn't have WiFi I want to be able to connect my phone to the TV still.
Google of your going to not enable HDMI adapter connections, then make your chromecast capable of direct connection that doesn't rely on wifi
The usbC port on the nexus uses USB 2.0 standard... not a chance
Most USB-C promised feature (which actually are usb3.1 features) will not work ; it's a shame
No one has been able to confirm the spec on the USB port. Most report it to be 3.0 with some 3.1 sprinkled in.

I read somewhere that USB is indeed 2.0 with USB type C port, like the OnePlus Two. At least it has quick charging
Does MHL or whatever the other standard is work? I thought that allowed the phone to "cast" to the screen?
Google themselves confirmed during the AMA that it is 2.0
And disabled casting to Roku 3 in 7.0. gotta have a Chromecaat.

Otg support ?

Hello everyone,
Is the pixel c support OTG ? can i use an usb flash drive with the pixel c ? thanks a lot
On twitter Google store answer me : "Mind if we jump in? The Pixel C does not have USB OTG. Hope that helps."
Thanks a lot
Yes. It does have OTG. I have tested it with a USB-C hub and was able to use a usb flash drive and Ethernet my device.

Is it correct that this hub doesn't have power pass through to be able to charge the tablet?
Really like the hub, but didn't buy, as I'd like it to power the tablet too.
I picked up a Griffin USB-C to USB-A adapter, plugged it in to my Pixel C, and plugged a memory stick into the cable. ES File Explorer recignized the memory stick immediately. On the box for the cable it stated that it was for plugging USB peripherals into your tablet.

With so many cables not passing Benson Leung's tests, I am a bit unsure with USB-C OTG cable I should get. The original one from Google is 15 € which is kinda expensive...
Does anyone know if he reviewed some USB-C OTG cables? I can't find anything.
It only has full size USB a ports, so can't plug in a charger no.
The battery life is great on he Pixel C though, so all good

I agree that you could get it to fit, but not sure I'd want it facing straight up with my cables and sticks attached.
Seems it would stress the port or worse I'd catch it and cause some damage.

Short answer is I don't at the moment, as have not had a chance to look at the online spreadsheet to see what he has tested and approved.
Will hopefully get to look later.

Does not appear to be included in the spreadsheet, so likely he has not reviewed.
I tried Google's own USB C to A (female adapter that looks like a otg cable) with a memory stick and it did not work, however I plugged in a USB2 hub into that adapter and then plugged the memory stick into that and it sees to work like a charm with esexplorer, I could also attach other things like a mouse and that worked too at the same time! So the trick is to use a USB hub with Google's adapter first and you can use any USB accessories just not directly into the adapter. I have not tried a USB 3 type hub as I don't have one but I suspect it will be fine and give you even faster speeds.

There are lots of OTG devices that work perfectly on my Nexus 5x - such as a microSD adapter, USB C ->A with a thumbdrive and my iRig UA guitar adapter
None of these work on my Pixel C.
I just got off a chat with Google support where I was told
"I'm sorry to inform you, at this moment it's not compatible. Be rest assured [sic], our engineers are working on a software fix to make it compatible with the Pixel C."
I responded with a link to the reddit AMA which seemed to state otherwise and the support rep told me that she'd get back to me via email with a response.
You can try plugging a USB 2.0 or 3.0 hub into a USB C>A adapter (mine was the Google adapter and the hub a USB 2 unpowered type) as I did and and that worked for me and I can now access Memory sticks on my Pixel C with no extra software (not sure about your iRig but it worked with other accessories I tried plugging into the hub).

Thanks, I'll try with a hub. I just don't understand why a hub is required for the Pixel-C but not for the Nexus 5x
There certainly seems to be a less complete stack in the Pixel-c -vs- the Nexus 5x.
Interestingly when I insert a cable into the Nexus 5x I get a dialog to set the usb mode:
"Use USB for
- Charging
- Power Supply
- File Transfers
- Photo transfer (PTP)
- Midi"
Where as the Pixel-C only gets "Power Supply" as an option.

I called Project Fi Support and the customer service rep did not know, but he was curious as well. When you receive your pixel xl please update us. Thanks!
USB Type-C guru Benson Leung has informed us that the Pixel phones don't work with the adapter because they lack VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode that is on the Pixel C and Chromebook Pixel, which means that they aren't compatible with any adapters of this sort.

I heard you can't use USB to HDMI, not tried it as I don't have a cable, but would make sense since they likely want to sell a few more Chromecast.
That sucks. I wonder if V20 does. I need hdmi compatibility.
I'm curious if this will work with a displayport based or mhl based usb c- hdmi adapter
I read that the V20 is hdmi compatible so I am leaning toward the v20 at this point

The Pixel's do not support Miracast since they would have to pay royalties to include it. They do support Chromecast which you can get a dongle for $35. Which will allow screen mirroring on to a tv.

You won't like it but... LG V20
I've been investigating all routes to achieve this with my pixel, wish I'd gone for a S7 or LG V20 now as the lack of alternatives to Chromecast are none. The reason being I'm using this in my car with Appradio Unchained and needing an internet signal is a right pain. Not to mention the CC not being picked up randomly by it in cast devices. My nexus 5 was perfect for this as it supported slimport.
I have found something of an alternative however it doesn't quite work unfortunately. There are two modes to mirror, USB debugging and USB Tethering. With debugging I get audio but no video. With Tethering I get video but no audio. Which is making think about buying one of these audio embedders. It would mean having to connect the headphone jack as well but hey it would in theory work and at least the audio would quality would be excellent...

No USB Cable?

I was a bit surprised to find out that the Pixel 2 doesn't come with a transfer cable, and the only adapter is USB-C to USB-A. Luckily I still had mine from the original Pixel XL, but it was odd that Google didn't include one. Just a heads up for those who haven't received there's yet
That adapter allows you to use your old charging cable to transfer. Adapter into the Pixel 2, old charging cable into adapter and into old phone

Correct, but this post isn't really about the adapter. It's about Google including one less cable versus last year. The original Pixels included the adapter, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and a USB-C to USB-A cable. The USB-C to USB-A cable is not included with the new Pixels.
And like the new Pixels, some phones these days only come with a USB-C to USB-C cable. The included adapter doesn't help in that situation. Very few devices fall into that scenario, but it still could happen.
The original came with the adapter too? I don't remember that

It did indeed. I've used it frequently for USB OTG.
FYI, you cannot use a normal USB-A cable and the C-to-A adapter and connect your Pixel to a PC. It will not allow you to charge or connect to transfer files.
Really sucks, because I used this at work a lot with my original Pixel XL. Something changed with the new hardware and it prevents you from doing it. Luckily, I also have the original C to A cable that came with my XL.
Definitely a bummer for someone going from iPhone to Pixel 2. Now I have zero cables I can use to charge my new phone in my car. I left Apple because I was tired of being forced to buy extra things to do basic stuff so a little irked that I need to buy a special connector for car charging. Anyone have recommendations on a good cable that will actually work for both charging and data transfer?
They replaced it with the headphone cable.

There are heaps of good USB C to USB A cables out there. If you need one you can buy the google one from their store. Would have been nice to get one in the box, but I still have 3 lying around that I've used for previous type C phones.

No USB A-C cable supports 3A charging unless it is out of spec. Google's A-C cable does not support 18W charging.

Do not use a 3A legacy cable to charge your phone, or you may risk damaging something.

-Are there any third party cables out there that will fast charge and have 3.0+ spec? (of course 3.0 is pointless if the phone itself maxes out at 2.0)
