[Workaround] Fix noise reduction and oversharpening without root or bootloader unlock - Moto G5 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

After being bored for quite some time i found a way to bypass the horrible noise reduction and oversharpening via an external app without voiding the warranty in any way, but this results in a quite raw looking image being in jpeg, so you need to apply your own noise reduction via photoshop or any else method.
Using FreeDcam app from the play store
Set the main camera api to camera1
Jpeg quality - 100
CustomMatrix - imx362
And on the right side of the menu
Wavelet Denoise - Denoise-off
Zero shutter lag - on
You can also change anything if u swipe up from below except the iso, because u change the iso from the left iso button, i recommend setting sharpness the prism to 0-10

Well i figured out i was pushing it too hard with hdr scene mode and forgot to change api to camera1
Working like a charm now .
Thanks buddy. Also try moving this thread to "Apps Themes and Mods" section

Thanks for this workaround - it really makes a difference especially for us without the time to root the phone.
Is there a way to make FreeDcam app to make a shutter noise so that we know we actually took a picture? Right now there's no indication and I have to go to the gallery to make sure.

I applaud the effort to find another workaround!
This is interesting to me, however I must admit- those images have a lot of ugly artifacts that are now baked in. Yes, it appears to be getting around the NR smoothed look, but it looks like it is doing so by adding a layer of grain before the jpeg compression. Without the camera2 api, I'm not sure it is possible for an application to actually access the raw frame buffer before the chromatix, etc, libs get involved. My first hunch in that this look is artificially created by the app after the camera routine has done its processing.
In other words, it looks almost like grain is being added to give the illusion of details in much of the same way we can get details in lower color spaces via dithering. Even relatively well exposed parts of the frame that shouldn't have noise have noise. And then some heavy jpeg compression on top of it, so removing it in post with Photoshop/LR/etc is going to eat a lot of detail- arguably at least as much if not more than you were getting with moto cam. Have you tried to clean any up in post and compared them side by side with moto cam?
Interestingly, if you enable the camera2 API, there is a version of FreeDcam that can record actual sensor RAW from the G5+, and one of the only apps that can properly. But once you are doing that you are better off with any of the various Google Cam versions floating around for 32-bit Nougat. Root access isn't necessary, however in order to enable the camera2 api, you need to be able to change a line in build.prop. At the very least, you need to unlock the bootloader so that you can change a system file. You can remain stock and unrooted though. I know, not for everyone, but I recommend it if image quality is important to you.
I still think you need to enable camera2 at a minimum to get better image quality, if not just replacing chromatix libs. But this is an interesting find.

[Q] Camera Graininess

I love to take photos, and I dont have a digital camera (I dont even know if it would be any better than my phones) so I use my phone. I used to have a problem with my camera taking blurry pictures when not in sunlight, but figured out what ISO is and fixed the problem.
My new problem is that my pictures seem to have a grainy feel to them. Its like little blue green and red dots all over, and it annoys me. Im wondering if theres a way to fix that or an explanation.
Are you able to post a pic that you've taken with the camera? I've noticed when taking pictures things can be grainy if I take a really up close shot of something, but I think that's because there is no macro-mode (like most SLRs and Point-and-Click cameras have). But when I take a normal picture with it everything comes across really smooth.
I guess

Is that good enough?
Edit: i think i solved the problem myself. I think it happens in low light situations.

It almost looks as if the camera is out of focus. Do you get the same results when you use the LED flash?
Edit: I just saw the edited post. That was going to be my next idea. Its probably something with the white balance.
No. That's how I think I figured it out that its light causing the problem. When I take it outdoors there is like no grains watch.
Yishtishe
Its called noise, and it happens with any digital camera when you crank up the ISO in low light situations. Its pretty similar to the graininess you would see in a film camera set to high ISO, but the cause is the digital sensor instead of the film itself.
http://www.photoxels.com/tutorial_noise.html
Some reviews I've read seem to hint that HTC phones tend to be a little heavy in the noise department compared to some other phones. I doubt there's not much that can be done about it.
Thank you all. I have one more question. There is this photo effect that I really like that mskes the sky have a greenish look to it and makes every object look better. It is usually accompanied by a background blur to make the object pop out. Here is an example of the effect.
I just wanr to know how that effect is done and or what it is called.

your cameras lens is dirty as hell ?
the other effect you're loooking for is called a bokeh (spelled right i think) and it's possible with some phones. haven't tried on the g2 yet, but dslr's do a fine job of it.
If you're using your G2 as a camera, I would *highly* recommend that you install the Virtuous (or another Sense/Desire Z-based ROM), as the camera application is way superior to what you get on a stock ROM (or Cyanogen). In the Sense camera app, there are even a handful of filters you can apply as you're taking the photo, one of which is this bokeh that you're interested in - even has a slider so you can adjust the parts of the pic that get blurred/focused.
What if I really hate sense. Is there a way I can simply get the sense camera while keeping cm?
-Mylenthes with his awesome G2
I searched bokeh and it isn't really the effect. The effect is accompanied by bokeh, but isn't just bokeh. It has a greenish look to it. Thanks anyway, and still wondering how tovget sense camera on cm.
-Mylenthes with his awesome G2
Use "Vignette" and you'll never use any other camera apps again. This app has the settings you need to take a pic like that.

I use vignette, but it doesn't have bokeh or the effect I like. It is a grear app though.

Try tilt-shift. Its a similar effect to bokeh, where you can blur areas of the photo. I think the leaf picture you posted is just that and some color filtering/manipulation. Although, I'm not expert at photo editing, I just know a couple tricks.
I don't like the tilt shift. There is not enough customizability with it.

I see what you mean, there is no control over what areas are in/out of focus. There are lots of different photo edited apps on the market (some of them free), play around with a few of them. Better yet, get Photoshop (or the consumer level Photoshop Elements). The Android apps are just toys compared to a real photo editing suite.
My sister has Photoshop. Also I found the effect. It's called lomo. Also there is an app that does a Boleyn effect so thanks for all your help.

That's a cool effect (Lomo). Thanks for sharing, I wasn't familiar with it. As I suspected, the effect can be simulated with edge blurring and color manipulation, but of course its easier if the app/program you are using has a built in Lomo effect.
http://www.digital-photography-school.com/how-to-make-digital-photos-look-like-lomo-photography
I'm currently playing around with a market app called PicSay Pro. Seems pretty cool so far. It costs the same as Vignette ($4), but lots more ability to scale/adjust some of the effects parameters. It has the Lomo effect, as well as a nice vignette effect (edge blurring) tilt-shift (lets you pick the focused area, and amount of blur) and a bunch of other stuff.

[TOOLS] Phone Mods - Screen Density, Camera Enhancements, Screen ColourControl +MORE!

GALAXY NEXUS PHONE MODS
This is all part of the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit but I have made a new Thread for people who may not have noticed it, people who didnt need the ToolKit but may find some of the Mods useful or just people who want to talk about the Phone Mods specifically.
FUNCTIONS OF THE PHONE MODS SECTION V1.4 [GSM + LTE][13TH MARCH 2012]
Change the Screen Density (DPI)
CWM Recovery, Only 1 No in the Confirmation Screen
Camera Sounds (Disable/Enable Camera Shutter, Video Camera Shutter, Focus)
Camera Enhancements (Increase Video Bitrate, Sound Bitrate, Photo Quality)
Change WiFi Scan Interval (Time between scanning for new Wifi Access Points)
Startup Boot Animation Screen (Disable/Enable which affects Boot Time)
Screen Colour Control (Change Gamma Offset and Colour Multiplier)
--------------------------------------------------------------
DOWNLOAD
The Phone Mods are part of the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit. You can download the latest version *HERE* (no need to install drivers if you already have adb/fastboot drivers installed) and select option 18 in the Main Menu to enter the Phone Mods Section.

USAGE
STOCK ROM users will need to enter the Mods Section via the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit as most functions need an insecure boot image which is set up from the Model Selection Screen of the ToolKit. If you are running a CUSTOM ROM (with insecure boot image) then you can run the ModsSection.exe directly if you wish.
ALL Mods Section functions require you to be booted into Android and connected to the PC via usb with adb/fastboot drivers installed. If you havent done this already then refer to the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit Thread for setup instructions.
The Galaxy Nexus ToolKit and Mods Section are very tightly integrated and so is impossible to seperate the 2 parts unless I want to cut out Stock Rom users (which I dont) so please dont ask if I can split them up. I could but its just not worth it.
Lastly if you have any ideas for functions that can be added to the Mods Section or just want to discuss a particular function then feel free.

Thanks for this thread. Wouldn't have thought about checking the toolkit after I already rooted with it.
I am interested in the better photo quality. Is it noticeable and what exactly changes? Does it edit something in the camera or will just compress the picture less?

The default jpg quality for pictures is 95, 80, 70. The 2x setting will push the top quality up to 100 (no compression) and the other 2 profiles push all 3 quality settings up to 100.
Mark.
Anyone have a comparison between the higher bitrate video and stock?
Either way, I'll be giving it a try in the next few days and will report back my findings.
Is there any way to enable 30fps video for 1080p? 24 is a bit low for my tastes!

[MOD][DEV] Enhanced Camera & Audio

Right now i'm doing some research to make some improvements on Camera and Audio to our device.
Things i've done so far:
Code:
[LIST]
[*][COLOR="Red"]V2[/COLOR]
[*]Enabled AGC
[*][COLOR="Red"]V1[/COLOR]
[*]Doubled to 320kbps with stereo audio encoding (Recorded videos, whatsapp and probably any other app that record sound will get crystal clear audios, caution with your data usage. Doubled encoding means doubled size)
[*]Doubled to 20 Mbit/sec video encoding 720p
[*]Bumped to 99% JPEG
[/LIST]
To do list:
Force 1080p recording (it has no affect playing with media_profiles.xml yet)
AGC - Automatic Gain Control (if you record something very loud like a concert, the sound will get very ****ed up)
What I know:
Motorola has disabled AGC for some reason I don't know. If you look at audio_effects.conf you'll find some Dolby code and AGC, AEC and NS as commentaries.
AGC, AEC and NS relies on pre_processing and libaudiopreprocessing.so, which wasn't declared on the file in first place.
The sensor has 1080p capabilities (pipeline and everything), since we share the same camera module as Nexus 5. I believe we can fine tune some stuff with the camera apk. For now I want to try this first to later research with libs/drivers.
I've managed to decompress the APK file but i have no idea how to decompile DEX, ARSC and the XML files (are XML compressed/obfuscated? It wasn't readable).
Can someone enlight me over?
Flash at your own risk.
Tested on CM12.1
Stock not tested yet
The audio graphs i've analyzed with and witouth the mod seems that AGC is on(maybe with a very moderated preset). Can someone try to record a video on a very loudly place?

Great work!
Can someone post some pictures/videos for comparison vs stock?
RAW support for the camera would be amazing as well.
I believe it works from 4.4 KK to 5.0.2 and CM 12.1.
I'll post something to compare with later.
If someone help me to understand and manipulate DEX ARSC and those weird XML i would be very happy
i think it's not possible, but maybe add camera2 api is possible?
Please mention if this mod is for stock rom or it will work on any rom...
I noticed an improvement in the quality of camera friend
Hi all, can confirm this works on stock 5.0.2, no bootloops, audio quality REALLY impressive, as for AGC, I tried screaming into the mic a couple times and there was no audio distortion, I still need to check out the increased video bitrate, but it looks really sweet, thank you, keep up the awesome work, really looking forward to 1080p video working on this device

That's not possble for photos, but the video resolution could theoretically be increased from 720p (aprox. 0.9 Megapixels) to 1080p (2MP).
Is there a way to enable recording with 60 frames per second? I would also like to see some comparison pictures/videos if possible.

Hmmm i don't think so, not without messing with the .so files.
In low light conditions out device records at 15 FPS to increase sensor exposure to compensate the light. In sunny conditions it records at 30.
I've been trying to decompile the lastest moto camera but it seems i can't find some portion of the code. I'm still trying to understand how those stuff works and how Android manage and rely in things.
I'll reserch some more about decompiling/recompiling APK and .so files.

Obviously, it doesn't work. My guess is: Sensor DOES support and app detects it, but libs don't.

Camera Observation

So I have been messing around with the Camera and like everyone has said, it is quite underwhelming, and this is surprising because it has a quite good sensor. Iv used different apps and seems other apps take worse pictures even. I'm thinking the reason the Camera is performing poorly because LeEco is not Utilizing API 2 for the Camera, which would explain why Manual focus is not available on other camera apps. Just doesn't make sense why the Camera can't perform anywhere near the OP3's.

So the trick with phones is to use HDR to get better DR and low NR. Given that phones nowadays have tremendous SoC power, HDR processing should be a breeze. And set the Sharpness setting to lowest to prevent artifacts.
Have you tried Google Camera?
Here is a comparison... You can see that Google Camera photo has better detail despite having higher ISO. Noisier but resize it down to 50%, it will be infinitely better than LeEco's default camera output.

I also do think that the software has alot to do with its underwhelming performance. Also, the pro 3 is lacking OIS compared to the others phones using the same sensor such as the op3 and lg v20. OIS helps the camera use longer shutter speeds to take in more light because it makes the lens steady. Cameras w/o ois needs to take pictures at faster shutter speeds to minimize blur resulting to the camera taking less light in.
With BuildProp Editor it's possible to add this line :
persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1
and after reboot on x720 cinese version it's possible to use API 2 Camera.

Unless I am missing something, you just need to click/tap on the area you would like to focus on right? Even the LeEco camera can do manual focus. I suggest you use Google camera app. I did a comparison of this phone with the Pixel and the result is surprisingly similar. In sheer performance, LePro3 ate the Pixel alive. =D

Did someone find any Google Cam v7.x for GALAXY S9 Exynos? Here's what I found!

So this is my first thread in Galaxy S9 section. I just bought this device and its great but I didn't know that there will be little to no support for S9 (specifically exynos variant). Anyway lets come to topic. For the past three days im trying to find a Google Cam version 7 or above (yes for Astrophotography/Night Sight specifically). I tried many versions which were made for different devices. Most of them closed when I opened them, few opened but didnt work at all and then I found this specific version which works but yes there are bugs.
The link to this specific version is at the end of this post. The major reason to post this thread is to get attention from any developer/modder/anyone who can help us make it work in our device.
So after changing a few settings I was able to make simple camera work. Night mode worked too but only RAW images. The main reason the pictures were not saving (according to my tests) is due to HDR mode. I read somewhere that GCam uses Snapdragon's piping tech (if im correct) to make it work which Exynos lacks. So disabling HDR and HDR+ makes camera work. Every time when I took night sight photographs either the pictures did not saved or if they saved then they were black color only.
This specific version also has something like DEVELOPER SETTINGS in its settings where you can change some specific settings. I dont know what most of them do but if anyone know them you can help us.
What's Working?
Simple Camera
Night Sight (RAW only)
Photo Sphere
Whats not working?
̶A̶s̶t̶r̶o̶n̶o̶m̶y̶ ̶M̶o̶d̶e̶ ̶d̶o̶n̶t̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶m̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶w̶o̶r̶k̶ ̶a̶u̶t̶o̶m̶a̶t̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶i̶t̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶s̶u̶p̶p̶o̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶d̶o̶ * It works when your mobile is stable or youre using tripod. im still not sure!!
Everything else (still checking)
For SNAPDRAGON Users
May be you dont need to apply these settings. Just check the camera if it doesn't work then try these settings.
For Exynos Users
So to make this Gcam work here's what I did.
Open the camera. Swipe down and click gear icon to open settings. Goto Advance>>Enable HDR+ Control switch.
Now to shoot simple camera picture you just swipe down in viewfinder of camera and disable HDR+. Take photo it will work.
Now if u want to make night sight photos work, do this
swipe down, click settings Goto Advance>>Enable RAW+JPEG Control switch.
Now go to Night sight mode and swipe down. Make sure first option (RAW +JPEG) is set to RAW swtich enable.
Take the night sight picture and you will see it will appear completely black in Gallery or get removed. Its ok we dont need JPEG. Now open your file manage go to Pictures>>RAW and there you will see a RAW capture of your pic.
So what I want to tell you is the JPEG is not working but RAW is working you can edit it using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop (even in your S9) and get the desired image.
I tried other settings but they didn't seem to work. Maybe you guys can help make it work?

Here's the Exynos version that is currently under development. Most things work great and it's pretty stable. See if this works for you.

To use frontcam on an S8 or S9 (not the notes I believe) you need to edit a .lib file, as such requiring root to do so. Without doing this frontcam and something else important doesn't work (can't remember).

I've actually just changed the " Front camera photo resolution " to " (16:9) 3.9 MP " and the frontcam worked. (I have an IDan 5.1 GCam on a rootless S9 Exynos)
