Pixel 2 XL video out? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Is video out possible through the USB-C port? I was always under the impression that the Pixel lacked this feature? Recently came across a thread indicating this is possible via DiplayLink Presenter app and docking station using the DisplayLink as well. Has anyone had any success with this or know if it does indeed work? If so, which docking station worked? Thanks in advance for any help.

My understanding is it's not supported with Pixel 2 XL's USB-c .. you could use Chromecast for wireless display mirroring though....

Thanks for the help, yeah I've been able to mirror with the chrome cast was just hoping to be able to do it without internet or using all my hot spot data allowance. Didn't want to waste money on the displaylink dock if it wasn't possible.

Will either the Nexus 5x or 6p support HDMI via the USB-C connector?

DB> Nope. But Cast mirroring to ChromeCast or Android TV has got really good. And Chromecasts are only $35. And we have new ones announced yesterday.
That's bull**** if you ask me that they didn't enable it just because they are trying to push more of their products.
Sure I have a chromecast and whatnot and I can do all of that just fine at home.. But if I go somewhere that doesn't have WiFi I want to be able to connect my phone to the TV still.
Google of your going to not enable HDMI adapter connections, then make your chromecast capable of direct connection that doesn't rely on wifi
The usbC port on the nexus uses USB 2.0 standard... not a chance
Most USB-C promised feature (which actually are usb3.1 features) will not work ; it's a shame
No one has been able to confirm the spec on the USB port. Most report it to be 3.0 with some 3.1 sprinkled in.

I read somewhere that USB is indeed 2.0 with USB type C port, like the OnePlus Two. At least it has quick charging
Does MHL or whatever the other standard is work? I thought that allowed the phone to "cast" to the screen?
Google themselves confirmed during the AMA that it is 2.0
And disabled casting to Roku 3 in 7.0. gotta have a Chromecaat.

MHL to HDMI adapter?

Hi guys,
I was looking MHL adapter talking there but didint find (or I'm blind)
I would like to watch Netflix on bigger screen on my trips, example on hotel TV or friends place
I looked from Internet and eBay and there is so many different adapter (and so big price difference) that I would be very happy if someone can tell me if have found working MHL adapter for Oneplus 2?
Or is this impossible and only way is maybe use Chromecast?
Thank you
No MHL support i think, so chromecast or send screen are the options.
Look at this
Hi,
Just to use this treat.
I'm looking for MHL adapter too
I also found this video. Can someone confirm please is it possible to connect my OnePlus 2 via HDMI cable to my TV.
Thanks in advance and good day to all.

I don't know about hdmi or miracast but it does have a notification led. It is stated on Google store page for pixel under specifications.

Benson said it uses USB 3.1 Gen 1 Host and Client. 5gbps.
Benson Leung said the phone uses USB 3.1 Gen 1 Host and Client. 5gbps. So I think it will work well with your USB C HDMI adapter. I'll test my HDMI adapter when I get my pixel xl.
As above, USB 3.1 -> HDMI adapter. Here is one sold by google, though any will work: https://store.google.com/product/usb_type_c_to_hdmi_adapter

I called Project Fi Support and the customer service rep did not know, but he was curious as well. When you receive your pixel xl please update us. Thanks!
USB Type-C guru Benson Leung has informed us that the Pixel phones don't work with the adapter because they lack VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode that is on the Pixel C and Chromebook Pixel, which means that they aren't compatible with any adapters of this sort.

I heard you can't use USB to HDMI, not tried it as I don't have a cable, but would make sense since they likely want to sell a few more Chromecast.
That sucks. I wonder if V20 does. I need hdmi compatibility.
I'm curious if this will work with a displayport based or mhl based usb c- hdmi adapter
I read that the V20 is hdmi compatible so I am leaning toward the v20 at this point

The Pixel's do not support Miracast since they would have to pay royalties to include it. They do support Chromecast which you can get a dongle for $35. Which will allow screen mirroring on to a tv.

We can't use HDMI output in google pixel phone.
I tried it but it wasn't working well. U.U
Has anyone found a solution to this problem. I want to be able to mirror content from my Google pixel xl to my Sienna rear entertainment system and I was hoping that usb-c to hdmi would work. I bought the cable and then learned that it's not supported. I'm not too happy about this.....any solutions?

You won't like it but... LG V20
I've been investigating all routes to achieve this with my pixel, wish I'd gone for a S7 or LG V20 now as the lack of alternatives to Chromecast are none. The reason being I'm using this in my car with Appradio Unchained and needing an internet signal is a right pain. Not to mention the CC not being picked up randomly by it in cast devices. My nexus 5 was perfect for this as it supported slimport.
I have found something of an alternative however it doesn't quite work unfortunately. There are two modes to mirror, USB debugging and USB Tethering. With debugging I get audio but no video. With Tethering I get video but no audio. Which is making think about buying one of these audio embedders. It would mean having to connect the headphone jack as well but hey it would in theory work and at least the audio would quality would be excellent...

USB-C Dock

Does Samsung have a USB-C Dock similar to the one attached, or any recommendations?
Dex. It will be launching with the phone for $150
You can pick up plenty of generic usb-c docks. Not sure if they will do the same thing, but I'm thinking there will be plenty of knockoffs
Is there a third party dock with gigabit ethernet, hdmi, a couple of usb and power pass through? Do all usb c docks work with s8 e.g. the ones for macbook or dell? Thanks

I've tested my Huawei MateBook MateDock with my S8+. It has power pass through that works. Both USB ports work. HDMI works. I've been unable to get the Ethernet port to work with the S8+ (probably needs a driver).

Question HDMI over USB?

Hi,
has there been any rumors about HDMI over USB so far?
If I am not mistaken, this functionality was disabled by Google in the previous pixel phones...
Good question but haven't heard anything yet...
It never was HDMI, it is DisplayPort. HDMI over USB C doesn't exist.
Please add fricking desktop mode to AOSP of Android(I mean native one not gimmick one at Dev Settings). Damn why this is soo hard? You just released a Car Android in it. Why you are not trying anything on desktop mode feature. You already have working framework and API's for it. Samsung, LG, Huawei, Moto using it. And it's working damn well with little mods these OEM makes. Please Google bring official desktop mode to Android phones.

I am no expert but it seem that it does:

HDMI Alt Mode for USB Type-C, HDMI Type C, HDMI type-c, HDMI Type-C connector, HDMI Type C connector, 4K, ARC, HEC, CEC,

Google Tensor: Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro to feature dual ARM Cortex-X1 and ARM Cortex-A76 cores, no DisplayPort Alt mode supported
According to a report, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will run on dual ARM Cortex-X1 and ARM Cortex-A76 cores, supported by four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. Both smartphones will support aptX, aptX HD and LDAC Bluetooth codecs, a feature of past Pixel smartphones. There will be no DisplayPort...

i tried a usb C to hdmi adapter on the regular pixel 6 today and no luck. i assume it's not going to work with the 6 pro, im going to try with a 6 pro when it gets delivered tomorrow. google hasn't added display out over usb in any of it's phones, I assume because they don't want to directly affect google cast sales

Thank you for trying this out.
It's just a shame considering how good a desktop mode could be looking at the implementations made by Samsung, Huawei and Motorola...
Yeh, we need this capability in today's world! Cheers

Except it wouldn't affect Chromecast sales in most cases. It's a completely different use case - casting is mostly a very limited "play this media on this display" thing, and most people would still opt for a $50 dongle if it means they don't have to hook their phones up to the TV.
Whereas display output over a wired connection would be mostly used for desktop (partial) replacement, where a Cast dongle wouldn't work anyway.
