Unlockable bootloader / root? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Questions & Answers

UPDATE: BOOTLOADER IS UNLOCKED AND TABLET CAN BE ROOTED USING MAGISK v16.7!
Haven't seen any discussion on root yet for this tablet. I'm interested in picking one up, but would like to know if the bootloader is unlockable so that the tablet could have TWRP/custom ROMs installed on it at some point. Especially interested because of Treble.
Anybody have any ideas yet or is it still too early?

That is also interesting for me. I will never by a phone or tablet without the possibility of rooting. I currently owning the Tab S2 under Lineage OS 14.1 and I am pretty happy with the degree of freedom I have.
I hope the development with the Tab S4 will be more than with the Tab S3 (this was the reason why I never buyed one)

Sadly don't get your hopes up... SD's are notorious for being locked.

The S3 was Snapdragon and was unlocked as far as I'm aware. Either way, I have sent Samsung an e-mail requesting kernel source code for the Tab S4 since it apparently hasn't been done yet. Just waiting for a response.

With the Samsung devices I've had, no issue unlocking the bootloader. You have to use Odin or Heimdall to load a rom, and your warranty is voided (they've all had a 'knox bit' that gets burnt and is irreversible once burnt).
SD's notorious for being locked? Not in my experience. They are the most common chips to have aftermarket roms, thus the devices have to be unlockable. I'd put my money on a rom being developed for a device with an SD before any other chip available.

In terms of phones, all Samsung Snapdragon phones sold anywhere except China/HK are bootloader locked. That's why I ended up importing an Exynos variant S9, so that I could benefit from the unlocked bootloader.

Bl is NOT locked. I contacted @ashyx a few days hoping he could make us a twrp, but he hasn't got back to me.

Phones are not tablets. Phones are generally branded to a carrier that likes to fiddle with the UI, add unremovable bloatware, determine tethering rules, and other things that can be circumvented with root. My money is that the generic tab s4 gets an unlocked bootloader eventually and the Verizon branded one does not

The generic tab S4 is the one that I plan to pick up. I'm just worried because even the official carrier unlocked Galaxy S9 sold in the US and Canada has a locked bootloader, so it just seems like a very Samsung thing right now.

We will see. If the bootloader is really locked I will not become a customer of the Tab S4. Simple as that, as then there is no benefit for me anymore.

Received an e-mail this morning from Samsung in regards to the Tab S4 kernel source:

I have the Verizon T837V if any info is needed. There's already an update, but I haven't taken it yet.
Edit: looks like it might just be a security update, data usage is claiming only about 10mb for system update.
Edit 2: it's a small build update, new kernel, baseband.

Unfortunately I'm expecting the Verizon variant to be locked. I'm moreso just curious about the generic Wi-Fi variant.

Without anything custom to flash yet, how do you know that the bootloader is unlocked? As far as I'm aware, just having "OEM Unlock" available in developer settings doesn't necessarily mean that custom binaries (TWRP, for example) can be flashed without throwing an error.
I'm just trying to be extremely careful before I get a Tab S4, because I don't want to buy it only to end up returning it just because it ends up being locked after all.

Bootloader Locked?

Has anyone actually physically checked? I saw the Samsung chats, but nothing officially stating they are or are not locked.
Yes, FRP lock is on and no option to turn it off anywhere like on the Exynos model.
I don't see why samsung, and if not them the companies, have to be dicks about this and screw over their US clients.

It is shame. One of the reasons that I switched to Tmobile was because their Samsung phones always had unlocked bootloaders.
I learned my lesson with the s7 edge and didn't buy the phone right away this time around. My Note 7 with root was amazing, but we all know what happen with it.

I feel your pain. I switched from at&t for that very same reason and now all us models have locked bootloaders, but with all the customization you could do to these phones rooting and flashing isn't really necessary for me anymore. I just like the phone all around. It's a great phone. [emoji4]

But you won't be getting early updates and you may suffer when the gigabit network comes although don't quote me on that.

Lol... its a well known fact that the international devices get faster and more frequent updates than US or Canadian devices ever will.

I had both TMobile branded S7 edges and international models as well. I found that I actually preferred the TMobile version for volte, rcs messaging, native video calling and a few more small percs. Yeah the international models was bootloader unlockable and had faster updates but I had to do so many work arounds to get it close to how I wanted and yet it still never did. I could have rooted and got everything I wanted but I actually use Samsung Pay and that'd kill that. To each their own. I also recall the TMobile S7 edge and note 7's having a locked bootloader still eventually got root.

True the international versions lack some features but depending on your use they may or may not matter..for me I could care less about any of those so no biggie but others may need them.
Id rather have root, twrp and roms etc
The root on the s7 and note 7 snaps was via leaked engineering firmware and it wasnt ideal...buggy, slow and just a general pain to deal with.

Yep, I had the s7 edge and rooted it but it wasn't the same as when I had the T-Mobile version of the phone. It was a pain. These phones are great and I rather use it to its fullest. I also use android pay and want to use samsung pay so for me I'm good without unlocked billiards for now. I have a bunch of phones I have rooted that I can get my flashaholic tendency out. Lol. My pixel gives me that pure android feel so having a vendor feel is ok with me. I will be going back and fourth. I also don't know how having an international version will affect the gigabit network update when it comes out.

You get what you choose. I chose a carrier model because it is superior in network quality. I can't root my primary phone anymore because my work policies flag rooted phones automatically and I stop syncing. For my playground, I have Pixel XL. Fastest updates, unlocked everything. For a reliable phone I have TMobile S8+. Like i said, you get what you pay for and pick up.
I mean hey sure the bootloader is locked, but once the right person gets one of these in their hands Im sure there will be an exploit. Just gotta wait patiently good things come to those who wait!

While it is software written by humans and anything is possible. S7 never got an unlocked bootloader. We got root with the eng_boot.imgs, but never an unlocked bl.
But I'm holding hope. The community is full of extremely clever people.
Really sucks, I recall the heyday of the Galaxy Note II and SIII, man back then there were like 200 ROM's out, Touchwiz, AOSP, CyanogenMod, etc... Root and Recovery available the first week the phones released.
And I'm talking the U.S. carrier phones too. Not just the international.
And then they all stopped after the Galaxy S4 came out. They released a firmware and locked the **** down like a Navy sub going deep. Note 3 too LOCKED. And forever the good days long gone.
Except the T-Mobile Note 5 was rooted and ROM. But that was a freak rarity.
Now root and recovery are things of dreams for Galaxy phones.
---------- Post added at 01:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------
Whole reason I moved to T-Mobile two years ago, was for the unlocked bootloaders that T-Mo was famous for, even when Verizon and ATT didn't allow that anymore. The Galaxy Note 5 was their last unlocked phone, since then, the S7, and Note7 were LOCKED, and looks like the S8 is too.
Glory days are gone.
Almost like the Jailbreak scene, which has faded bad, and there's only a stable JB released maybe once a year or every 18 months.

Samsung Galaxy S9 Bootloader - Unlocked Thread

Guys,
I didn't see any questions popped up in the forum yet about unlocked bootloaders. I'd like to buy an unlocked version directly from Samsung. I remember Best Buy selling a different version of an unlocked S7 and S8 that you could not unlock the bootloader. With that said, I wanted to create a small list of the majority of S9's here in the states and see if we can confirm the bootloader is unlockable and that fastboot commands work.
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ Unlocked direct from Samsung
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ Unocked from brick and mortar stores like Best Buy / B&H Photo, etc.
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ from Verizon
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ from Sprint
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ from AT&T
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ from T-Mobile
Thanks, guys!

That's because we all know the snapdragon ones will be locked, if you want an unlocked bootloader get the european one.
I thought that "unlocked" in this context just meant it it's unlocked from the various carriers, not that the bootloader was unlocked?

Your list is showing network unlocked devices and such not bootloader unlockables
That's because each carrier in the states typically has their own variant and each has different bootloader status. Usually Verizon is locked down. Usually T-Mobile isn't (until recent years), so I created the thread to have one place to look and CONFIRM if a bootloader is locked or not.
This has nothing to do whether or not the phone is SIM unlocked. (Locked to a carrier)

Go exynos, snapdragons are a waste of time if you want an unlocked bootloader and development
The Chinese devices are snaps and BL unlocked also but see next to no development. So again exynos is a better choice

False. Denying warranty service for an unrelated issue is illegal in the US, large swaths of europe and many other places.
You and many others have fallen victim to a misinformation campaign put on by Samsung and many carriers to make you think this is true so that you either won't do it or if you do and they're is an issue then you won't even try.
Keep in mind it has to be something impossible to be caused by unlock or root, like for example a physical screen detect or the outside body becoming discolored. If it could at all be caused by something you did that you couldn't do without unlock or root you are still sol even if you know you didn't

How many phones with knox tripped has samsung fixed for you under warranty? Illegal schmiegel no one is going to take samsung to court in the US if the service center denies you warranty if knox is tripped.

Small claims is a great, inexpensive way to get big corporations to cooperate when damages are small. No lawyers in most states, and companies will usually fix the problem rather than spending the resources to send someone to some small, local court to respond.
check the s7 and s8 Snapdragon forums and you will know what to expect.
as for fastboot on Samsung, you dont do that. You use Odin.
This is amazing. An entire thread of posts pertaining to everything except the op's question. To that end -
Yes! There are Snapdragon S8's and 9's with unlockable bootloaders. Snapdragon S8's we're being sold in China (by Samsung themselves) with unlockable bootloaders. With the S9, these phones are being sold in Latin America as well, making them easier to import. I don't know how, and wish I knew more about this before I bought my Snapdragon US variant.

Im sorry I don't follow, but I think it's irrelevent. It does not matter what the corporate structure of Samsung is. When you purchase a device, that device comes with a warranty. It is illegal in the usa to refuse service for an incident unrelated to root that would otherwise be covered by warranty. Doesn't matter if the warranty is with Santa Claus, it's still subject to us law.
They will of course try and tell you otherwise, but standing your ground, knowing your rights and threatening to sue in small claims court if it comes to it will get your warranty honored.

Do you really think samsung cares about small claims court? They could show up with an army of lawyers if they wanted to. You on the other hand would spend more on a lawyer than what buying a new device would cost.

Unlocked CDMA Variant?

I have looked around and can't seem to find a model that is cdma compatible with sprint that has the ability to unlock the bootloader. Seems the A505U carrier variant can't unlock the bootloader. I've tried doing the 7 day trick but it doesn't seem to work for the A505U sadly(looking for additional confirmation on this).
Also on the look out for this, but it's not looking very promising. ?
I wish there were an unlocked varient for the US i just purchased one and didnt realize till when i looked at the model number that its for Europe
So the Sprint model can not be unlocked and rooted? I haven't owned a Samsung device for several years but the A50 peaked my interest. Looks like the same scenario, GSM models can be unlocked and CDMA can not.

Sprint Samsung A50 BL Unlock NO GO!
Ok so I am now an employee of Sprint. The information I have gathered is as follows. When Sprint requested this device from Samsung in their lengthy list of requirements one of them was that the ability to unlock the bootloader be removed. The reasoning behind this was that they did not want the end users to wind up " Accidentally " bricking their devices. As per insurance guidelines any attempt to modify the devices hardware and or software voids your warranty and your insurance that you carry on the device. So basically what they are saying is hey Android / Samsung community because of several hundred unintelligent people ruining their own devices we are removing the option in general. I am currently pushing to see if we can work with Samsung to push a firmware update that will allow this feature to be accessible as the whole point of having an android device it the open platform and being able to do these things. I really wish more cell phone manufacturers were like HTC which allows you to unlock the boot loader on any of their devices and even provide you a tool to turn S-Off on their website. But we cannot all be great.... Anyway hope that clears it up for ya'll and I am fighting the good fight on your behalf. P.S. I have the Samsung A50 and I was really not happy when I found out I could not root it.

Here in 2021 looks like things didn't go well :'(
My old A505U is just off contract and the "OEM Unlock" switch is missing from the developer options menu. Additionally, none of the normal methods for getting it to appear have worked for me. (I have tried reflashing the stock firmware, the whole messing with the date&time and updating, factory reset + login + wait 2 to 14 days)
I have spent hours on the phone with both Samsung and my previous carrier, but with no results; none of their support people have the knowledge/are allowed to help with unlocking the bootloader.
I am getting very discouraged that this old phone of mine will ever run anything open :'(

N9750 HK/China Bootloader Unlock

Can anyone confirm whether an oem bootloader unlock is available for the 0 model devices from China and Brazil as it was for the S10? I'd like to get the N9750/DS for for the improved performance of the snapdragon chip, but it won't be worth a damn without root.

Please take this as a legit question, not a dig... is root really that big a deal any more? I haven't rooted a phone since maybe my Note 4, and I really don't miss it much. Certainly not enough to deal with the crappy non-snappy models. Probably the best thing about root back then for me was getting rid of the bloat, but you can do much of that anyhow and the phone is plenty fast regardless now.

I received my N9750 (TGY) today and after enabling dev options there is no unlock bootloader option for what's it worth.

How sad.... I had a glimmer of hope when I discovered the S10 folk rooting their snapdragon devices. Thanks for the info anyhow
Can anyone else with an 0 model device, perhaps the DS version, confirm that this is the same across all devices?

For me root is essential. I use my device as an all around computer replacement when traveling, relying on chroot Linux to use desktop level graphics and video editing software. I also like to configure my environment and take full advantage of tasker and scripting to improve my user experience and workflow. I know this isn't the most common use case and I'm sure for most people unrooted is fine.
Good news. I checked again today and the unlock bootloader option was available. There must be some 24 hour delay I'm theorizing. Root away!

Yay! Thanks a bunch for checking back for me. Pretty excited now.
Hey guys, I am thinking of jumping from my Galaxy S10+ Exynos to a Note10+ (Snapdragon) especially the Chinese/Latin America version, and I want to know if you can unlock the bootloader, this is mostly for me to flash updates via Odin, not for root as I do not use it anyway.
Can you unlock the bootloader of this version?
Can you flash official updates to this device via Odin?
Thanks in advance guys!

Wait youre saying certain models come with an inbuilt option to unlock the bootloader?? i believe im using an SM-N975U with TMobile, and because im currently renegotiating things with them concerning an amount, they wont unlock it yet so it can be used with another carrier, and when i've attempted to do so with 3rd party unlock services they were unable to.. So are you saying if i acquired use of one of these it'd be not only unlocked thus able to be used with another carrier but its also rootable even though it uses a snapdragon? Would the only issue be to change the language to English or is there a lot more to it to make it usable here in the US? Which models does this apply to, just the one you mentioned? i believe i considered the unlocking offer for the snapgradragon, but the lack of transparency and being that i'm told it's from china (where Chinese friends tell me the lack of business ethics is unreal)i believe made me very uncomfortable.
You are conflating carrier lock and bootloader lock.

How? Am lead to believe a carrier unlock means youre not locked to a particular carrier, and bootloader unlock means the operating system files one is locked out from using by a manufacturer, are unlocked to become changeable. Could they be two separate questions? So is there an answer?

Would you be kind to post where you acquired it from?

Carrier lock means the phone is locked to a particular carrier and is tied to the device's IMEI. Bootloader lock is a security feature installed by the OEM to prevent malicious code from running on boot up. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to root the phone and install custom ROMs. It does not remove the carrier lock.

i believe i clarified something similar if someone decided to read it... can you or someone answer the question instead of conflate two things i believe i distinguished already..?

SM-N975U1 - OEM Unlocking missing - still within 7 days.

Hello,
I just got the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ on September 30th, SM-N975U1 variant, and I cannot toggle the OEM unlocking because it is missing. I read that this is due to the KG state of the phone and I would have to wait 7 days for it to be an option to toggle. I am trying to find out from other Note 10+ users with the same variant as mine if the option appeared after waiting 7 days?

Unfortunately the "U" variant does not have an unlockable bootloader. The OEM toggle is not there so that variant cannot be rooted (no USA variants can at the moment).
Exynos equals root.

For realsies? none of the "U" Variant... So I cant root my note 10+ SM-N975U? Dang that really grinds my gears!!!!!!!!
Leave it to samsung to figure out a new way to keep people from rooting their phones... "Hey lets get rid of the OEM unlock toggle, that way they cant unlock the bootloader and root their phone, and will have to keep all the bloatware we, and their carrier, force down their throats against their will, whether they want to or not."
I knew I never should have bought this phone. I swore 6 years ago I would never own another Samsung Device, but then they came out with this cool new phone and I wanted it so bad. I should have just waited until the pixel 4 XL came out and bought it instead.
Guess I'll Know better next time around at least, and by the time I need a new phone hopefully all phones will have the inscreen ultrasonic fingerprint reader.
I HATE YOU SAMSUNG!!!!!!!!
1. You could have informed yourself prior to buying, it is common knowledge US SD-models have locked bootloader and cannot be rooted...
2. It is merely a US-provider requirement to have locked bootloader, not Samsung's choice. Note 10/10+ is rootable in most other parts of the world..

What do u mean SD Models? Also if it's a us provider requirement then how come you can buy phones that have the OEM unlock option available on them?
Also this page is the first I even heard of it... Every time I search it shows that 7 days after you activate it the OEM unlock shows up. And on top of that just because it's not rootable at the time of purchase doesn't mean somewhere down the line someone won't figure out how to.
In fact my last phone was sold by a carrier, as carrier unlocked, and it had the bootloader toggle on it as well which made rooting a breeze.
I'm sorry but I don't agree with you... It has nothing to do with carriers, it's Samsung who has removed this feature not carriers. This is actually the first phone I've heard of that has the oem bootloader removed from the android software.
And besides that if you buy the carrier unlocked version of the note 10+ it should be your choice what you do with it not carriers and not manufactures.
Oh also I found an article (link below) Where someone managed to root the note 10+ SM-N975U with a patched boot image, which I would assume would also work for SM-N975U1 as well.
So like I said it's only a matter of time before someone figured out how to root it anyway. And my post was me griping at Samsung for doing what they did, and staying if I had waited I could have gotten a device that is made by a company that isn't actively trying to thwart rooting.

SD=Snapdragon, the SoC of the N975U/N975U1 phones. Those devices for US market have the locked bootloader.
The models with Exynos SoC (Samsung's own SoC), in models of most international markets N975F have working OEM unlock option and thereby unlockable bootloader.
Why would Samsung provide unlockable bootloader for one part of the world, but not for US where phones have US SoC (I.c. Snapdragon)? You tell me...

Well why not do a oneplus/google thing where unlocked versions have unlockable bootloaders while carrier versions don't?
Note 10+ Snapdragon
It is a nice device stock, after flashing the N975U1 firmware with ODIN, and disabling (at least), about 150 system-apps with ADB, it is fast and efficient.
I can't imagine how nice the Note 10+ would be with administrative rights.
