Hey Guys and Girls,
I just got my Galaxy S III a month ago and I am developing a problem I can't seem to figure out. On the edges of the phone, where the glass meets the blue plastic I am getting a build up of dirt. I keep my hands very clean as I am super OCD about my devices. With that being said, I am getting dirt and "grime" build up in the sides. Sometimes it's hard to notice but it becomes clearer as more days go on. I have contacted Samsung and they were unwilling to decide what it was without seeing it. I contacted my carrier who sent me a replacement after ten or more calls. The new device seems to suffer the same fate. I am wondering if anyone else is having this problem or knows how to get rid of it. I tried to clean it with an air canister with no luck and plenty of sharp objects. None which would do a great job, the only thing that came close was a toothbrush and that was difficult to say the least. Is this a known problem or am I getting more defective devices. Thanks for your input.
P.S- I know the photo isn't great and I will take more to show the effects. It is most noticeable in the corners, the sides, and around the speaker and home button.

I had some lint build up in mine before I got a case (free zoogue deal) that covers the gap. I just used the corner of a folded piece of paper to clean it out a few times. Personally, I consider that gap to be a design flaw, particularly considering that the gap is not uniform on all sides...

I will try the paper trick, pretty much the only thing I didn't use. I find the gap to be a flaw as well considering that over time it is only bound to get worse. I have found that some spots are wider than others. Not sure why they would create a design like this but glad to see I am not the only one. I thought I was being OCD for awhile.

The gap isn't a design flaw: it's actually the seam between the front and back of the phone, and it's where you slip a spudger (flat plastic knife) in order to pry it apart (after rear screws are removed) for repair.
Just put a case on it -- any case will do -- and then it's virtually a non-issue. If you don't want to use case then just live with having to clean out the gunk build-up every couple months.
(And, frankly, it's kinda lame that you *****ed about this "problem" over 10 phonecalls and then they finally gave you a replacement phone to make you go away and stop costing them money)
Before I had a case I didn't have this issue. The gap isn't very noticeable. I have a Diztronic TPU case now ($10 Amazon) and it has a small lip which covers that gap. Maybe you have dirty pockets or a batch of phones that just had a slightly larger gap.

You are entitled to your opinion about how lame or not lame it was for me to call, but the truth of the matter is I have owned a multitude of phones in my lifetime, none which had a problem like this at all. I am not sure if you are in Canada, but a three year term for a phone that constantly needs maintenance for removing dust does not seem like a premium device in my book. Not to mention the fact that if it finds it's way under the screen as you suggest, then it would only cause future problems, outside of the one year warranty, rendering me with an inoperable phone. So I can't say I agree with your analysis of my calls. Not to mention it costs them a negligible amount to speak with me on the phone.
Most of the cases I have found only cover the rear of the device and do not cover the lip. I would hate to cover up my super phone in a five dollar POS case just for the sake of keeping dust out of a device that should have been designed to not have that happen to begin with.

It can't get behind the screen because it's one piece, so don't worry about that.

Yeah, many of the hard polycarb cases -- like Samsung's mesh case, or the popular Rock Quicksand -- that offer little edge protection don't cover the the entire lip because they can't. All TPU and hybrid cases do, though.

Most TPU cases have a lip which wraps around the front. It's not a hard plastic case that tries to snap into place. I have the Diztronic case and the lip is definitely there and it definitely covers the gap you're referring to. I had a TPU case for my GSII and it's the same basic design. If you don't want a case then you'll have to put up with the dirt in the crevices or get a different phone.

I will have a look at the cases as you suggest and try to find one that I like. I would hate to give up this phone as I very much enjoy it and don't see any other phones that interest me at the present moment.

Np. I use this case. http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Fle...54&sr=8-7&keywords=diztronic+galaxy+s+III+tpu The matte feel is nice and it comes with a screen protector which I applied and it's good quality as well. It doesn't attract as much finger prints as other screen protectors I've used and it's very clear.

But... even with a TPU case you'll have to be careful of drops. Gorilla Glass isn't as strong as it's touted to be against sudden impacts (watch iPhone5 vs Samsung Galaxy S III drop test). My GSII got a small scratch prior to applying a protector and just today a coworker dropped her GSII on concrete and the TPU case didn't stop the screen from severely cracking. It will protect from a lot of surface scratches though. My mom just got her first smart phone (a Pantech) and dropped it and it slid across the floor. I hadn't gotten her screen protector yet and her screen has some small scratches and nicks.
I guess my point is even if it reduces the aesthetics get a case, a screen protector, and be careful still.
I ordered that case like you suggested but it has yet to arrive. The replacement phone I got from my carrier is having even worse problems than my first one. I was even more careful with this than the others. Not really sure what to do. I am intrigued by the fact that I see nobody who has a white GS3 post problems about it. I wonder if the blue is the only one with these kind of issues.

I had a blue one and had the same problem. The dust was noticeable around the edge and around the speaker. I ended up exchanging it because the home button died. All they had in stock was white so I took it. I have to say, the white one has much less of a seam and there is no noticeable dust build up!

Going to see if I can get a white. I prefer blue but I hate this problem.
Mine collects dust too and I use a Rock case. I'd clean it if I could, but I can't seem to fit paper or anything in to push it out either. It's hardly visible, not putting too much thought in to it.
Are there any case haterz on this forum, who run their phones without any kind of cases / back stickers etc ?

I have been using case since day one, but i just can't stand it anymore. Did I buy alluminium phone to put it in rubber case or stick plastic sheet of foil on it to lose the feeling of alluminium ? No !
I drop my phone very rarely, actually i have never droppped it (knock knock), only time it hit ground it was clumsy bird's (jokin clumsy friend's hands) fault. My only concern is lens protector. On one side its nicely hidden in the rim, but at the other lens cover is protruding just a very litle bit. I am attaching picture to illustrate it a bit. It is side look.
There's a "hole" in the phone body, so the lens should be all hidden / drown and there should be 1 milimeter gap, when i place phone on table. On one side there is, on other lens is in line with body.
Grey - phone
White - gap for lens cover
Black - lens cover

i did for apprx 4 months when i first bought the device, now i'm using crystal clear case to not to hide devices body.
i bought a case after i saw scratches on camera lens, luckly camera lens got replaced after service for red tint.
also shiny exposed alumium around the device got scratched and deformed a bit.
I also am not a fan of big bulky cases. One of the main reasons I bought this phone is because it is so damn beautiful (compared to most other phones). I've always joked about how iPhone fans typically rave about how "sleek" and "thin" their phones are, yet they walk around with them wearing the equivalent of a down-filled parka that is anything but "sleek".
I did compromise a bit, just because I want to keep my phone looking nice. I found the Cimo clear case. It is very thin, and very clear. It has just enough of a "lip" around the edge so that the screen of the phone won't contact the ground when it is lying down (or dropped on its face). The soft rubbery cushioning should also protect against dings on the corners and back, as well as prevent scratches. All without sacrificing the beauty of the phone. I paid $10 on Amazon for it.

I did not buy a unibody aluminium finish phone to hide it behind chinese plastic covers. Thats not my style. I have pretty much the same type of use like yours. The only thing that has happened with me is that the beats audio red sticker at the behind bottom plate is now fading off. Nothing else. Just keep keys/card holder and coins in other pocket. I dont think you need a plastic cover.
When I had my One I used the HTC hard shell - minimal design but clear so you could still see the phone. Best case I had IMO

Yeah I've been running mines nekkid since I got it last April, just couldn't bring myself to spend money to cover such a good looking device. Other than some wear marks around the shiny beveled edge, there's no obvious signs of age.
I'm not rough on it, but I don't baby it either. I have dropped it a few times(on purpose, just to show people how durable it is), and run my knife across the screen and back, but no damage.

And what about lens cover ? Is yout lens completely hidden, or do you have it like me ? Hidden on one side, flush with body on the other.
Do you use any kind of pouch or something ?
never ever use a case defeats point of having such a wonderful design,have a leather pouch when not in us and just treat it like a baby when in use 6 months on still pristine not a mark

My lens cover is slightly recessed, so no, not like you, but haven't had any damage to it. No pouch or anything, just keep it in my pocket with my change.

I am careful when I lay it down on certain surfaces.
And I try *very* hard never to let it slip out of my hands and fall.
No damage due to general wear. I dented the back slightly and roughed up one corner slightly.
Totally worth it. Love the feel and thinness of the phone.

this is how i use mine. transparent cover over the back which i only put on because the aluminum is actually very slippery for me and the clear skin provides better grip so i dont drop it. clear cover over the screen and im good to go. few small areas around the front bevel where the blue has worn away but other than that its prefect. i never use a case, defeats the purpose of having a thin phone.
I Have been using it without cover, but in December it has fallen on the road so i ordered some cheap one from the e-bay.
So now, i am using it with cover, but i lost that great metal feeling of the phone.

I use no covers, just matte screen protector (I like the way my display looks with it). Bought it in June 2013. It fell on the floor several times, it got only one scratch on the top (on the lright corner), but it still looks amazing! As it's always in my pocket, lately the "beats audio" logo on the back is going away slowly... but i use nothing to protect it

+1. Dont know how long I would keep the phone. But while I have it might as well enjoy the quality feel of it.
My HTC One is about two weeks old. I love it so much, I can't bring myself to cover this baby up.
Also, I am paying for a warranty, so if anything happens to it I'll get a new one, or maybe the M8 if they run out =D

I had an idea about using my phone under water to take pics and videos etc. I'm a little paranoid about the flaps coming open though.
I was wondering if anyone had come across a case that covers all of the flaps but still gives access to the shutter button?
Also if not, have you guys got any ideas as to ways of guaranteeing that they stay closed?
I know it's a bit of an odd request! Lol

I had sourced this out in Fall last year, and every single case I could find had the cutouts for ports open.
The only solution I had found was a company that 3D prints their cases, and I asked them if they could make me one without the holes cut out. They said yes, but the case was $50 plus $20 shipped, and would be ready in 3 months (due to backlog of their 3D printer).
I never went through with the order, but it can be done. Here's why:
Mentioned by the above company, this will cause additional wear and tear on your device, because while your goal is trying to keep the water out, waters' goal is to try to get in, and if successful, even with the flaps closed, that case is going to hold it there. Moisture will now be locked in against the case and phone, and can cause issues such as paint protection, fogging and possibly water damage.
My advice:
You're best just grabbing some medical tape from a medical supply store, and using that to keep the flaps closed. Medical tape is waterproof, similar to a band aid, but has only a slight adhesive to it, so it comes off easily without damage to your screen protector or phone itself. It's perforated so it's super easy to tear by hand too.

NOTE: Do NOT buy cotton tape, or lower quality "medical tape", as most are designed for plaster casting and have a very strong adhesive to them. They WILL damage your phone and possibly tear off your protector, damaging it. Look in low quality first aid kits at whatever "big box store" you want (WalMart, etc.). The cotton tape is white, and requires the use of scissors or a knife to cut. That is the **** stuff. If you can't easily tear it off in a straight edge by hand, it's not the correct stuff.
Alright so I'm sure everyone who has the leather back and has not put a cover on it yet can see that the leather back is getting dirty.
It might be just me but i have the brown leather back. The stitches have gotten blackish and not white like they were in the beginning and the back just keeps getting a darker shade!
Any of you guys try to clean it? If so how'd you do it?
Is it okay to take the back off and clean it under water?
Or should i use windex.
I don't wanna ruin the leather attempting to clean it!

DO NOT USE WINDEX OR RUN WATER. That will ABSOLUTELY ruin your leather.
I bought a cheap bottle of leather treatment from CVS for about $6. You spray two coats on it, and you're good to go. It actually gave the leather a nice, grippy-er, feel. And it helps protect from wetness. After that, you should be able to use any type of leather cleaner to keep it looking fresh.

I use Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Cleaner followed by Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Aloe Conditioner. Yes, I do my own auto detailing, and yes, I hate it when people use cleaners inappropriately and screw up whatever they were trying to clean. My parents are seriously guilty of that and it left me with cleaning-related faux-PTSD flashbacks decades later.
The G4's back wasn't shiny from the factory, but certain cleaners will produce a slight matte sheen on the leather.

Yes, it will keep your leather back looking mostly new. Most importantly it will protect against getting wet, which will stain your leather.
Any kind of leather treatment that adds a "shine" is no good in my eyes. I have had a few european luxury cars and i can tell you this...best thing i have ever used to clean my seats and other areas has been...BABYWIPES!!
Seriously it does not take away from the natural state or satin look of the leather and actually clean it very well. If it good enough for your babys ass.....its good enough for the skin on your phone!
You dont have to take my word for it though.
BTW got it wet today. there was a slight dark spot for a fe minutes but went away fully

These kinds of products are unavailable outside the US so we need alternatives.
What do you make of the advice given in this video ?

From the user manual
This product is made of cattle hide and may have different creases and patterns due to the properties of natural leather. If the product gets wet with any liquid (water, soda, seawater, rain, sweat, sunscreen, cosmetics, moisture, etc.), it may lose colour, change colour, or deform in shape.
When this product gets wet or contaminated, get rid of the water by pressing it gently with a dry towel, or wipe it with leather cream and leave it to dry in shade. When the product is exposed to a wet environment for a long time, it may cause creases or mould. The shape of the leather may not be restored to its original state after cleaning because of the properties of leather, and any contamination or deformity may get worse when using regular detergent or an organic solvent.
When the leather is wet with rain or sweat, use caution and avoid contact with clothes. It can cause any dye to become a stain.
Due to the nature of leather, friction for long periods of time or excessive force may damage the surface of the leather.

what i got is you need a cleaner and then a conditioner.
the cleaner to remove stains and a conditioner to maintain the material.
Mr clean magic eraser to clean it. That's what we use in the automotive detailing world

People have conflicting things to say about the extreme acidity of vinegar against the mild acidity of leather, which is why you need to dilute the vinegar in the first place. One alternate suggestion I've read is to use Woolite 10:1 to 6:1 (water:Woolite). Another I've read is Dove soap. Don't use saddle soap, which has a pH level way too basic for leather cleaning.
What I can say is that you should use a soft terry or microfiber cloth to apply the cleaning solution, then wipe it off with a dry cloth. Don't apply a solution directly to the leather and don't apply too much at once. Even the moisture from a water-dampened cloth isn't the worst thing in the world if you're just quickly wiping on and off. Just don't soak the leather in anything, like running it under a stream of water. It's too porous to not absorb it. Once it's clean, condition it so you have some kind of protection from future stains.

Bingo! thats is the conclusion i'm reaching too. The idea of leather is fantastic but if you want to look good then be prepared to put in the work.
Leather is just not that practical for day to day in a phone usage scenario..
But it looks so good <sigh>
One of the things I've learned in both buffing/polishing and interior detailing is to not work too large of a surface area at once. You don't want to let a product set or dry before you can work on it. The product ends up being harder to remove and/or stains your surface.
When it comes to patina, the issue for me is that the leather surface is small, so any marks will be more visible. I look at my travel wallet, which I haven't used much, and I'm annoyed that there is wear on one of its corners and the color has rubbed off. I'm far less concerned about a scuff on the seat in my car. Still, I don't own any leather furniture because of the upkeep required.
There are photos one of the Android Central staff posted of a used brown leather Moto X. I don't think it looks bad, and if it came that way out of the box, I don't think anyone would have thought it was dirty. If you're like me though, you like keeping things looking like new. I'm getting better about conditioning or protecting new leather products before wearing them or breaking them in.
The black leather G4 cover would be much more forgiving with stains, but aside from lack of carrier availability, I only would have preferred that version if it had contrasting stitching.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm a complete noob at this and have no idea where to start. I was thinking of getting the leather honey conditioner from Amazon, but still wasn't sure if that would be appropriate. No clue where to begin on cleaners. I have the black leather back btw

I've had a bottle of Leather Honey since about 2000 (before they changed the name), and that's what I used on my leather back. It didn't darken the tan leather (unfortunately), though it did make it a bit sticky for a bit. If you go this route, apply it sparingly before going to bed.
Since this is a thread about cleaning, I feel obligated to mention that product is for protecting leather only, although I believe the same company makes a cleaning product as well.
Hello everyone, has anyone else noticed in Galaxy A72 and Galaxy A52 that the Official Samsung cases are leaving marks and scratches on the plastic surrounding of the phone? My A72 phone looks like full of scratches and a friend has the same issue with his A52. Talking to Samsung Greece and they won't believe me saying i made the scratches myself.... Same answer to my friend. Can anyone help me in what could i do to be heard from the company?
Keep inside of case clean and free of debris.
Use some fine 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper to smooth inside of case if needed.
Stretching some teflon tape around the phone's edge will help.
Use another case.
Most untreated hard plastics are relatively soft and prone to scratches... of course Samsung isn't responsible unless it arrived like that... never mind Samsung's poor material choices

I agree with the poor material of Samsung phones.... Makes me think to sell everything and switch to iphone instead of trying to fix samsung cases The support is the worst ever they won't even believe me

If you used any phone in a case and paid attention this should be common knowledge by now. Even on the N10+ frame rail scratches can happen on the anodized aluminum.
Frequent cleaning of the inside of the case and keeping the phone clean in general helps.
I leave the protective factory film on the side rails until it falls off because of this.
You could use something like mylar wire marking tape to protect it

I was using cases in other phones and never had that. Always took care of my phones and cases.... Are we using a case for beauty or in order NOT to have scratches? This happens due to 2 things , low quality of material and low quality of the cases...
You use a case to protect the phone from a 2-4 foot drop onto concrete.
Take what you have learned and move forward...
