It's time we start looking into the Heart Rate Sensor Light as LED Notification - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Painfully, Samsung have removed the notification LED hardware, a $0.20 savings for the company. Now it's time we should look into the Heart Rate Sensor's LED lights as notification LED. At least, we will get something on device, though on the back.
I believe it may be possible if we can acces to the SDK. Only two things, if we can pulse that LED alone and how much powet utilization may happen. Lets see if someone can find this up. I will also start looking at the Samsung HRS SDK. I know we have more skilled devs. Lets figure it out guys.

You can already use the camera hole punch...

I agree with you. I know that Always on Edge is available for Notch notification. But with this on, we risk AMOLED burn-in. Also, this is not a hardware. Since the heart rate sensor have an LED, I think that will also be useful for a lot of us. Lets see if we can figure something out. Also, we will have the option to use, whichever is more helpful for us.

I read somewhere in the forum, that Samsung is working on using the camera hole punch as LED notification, similar to how it behaves when you switch to front camera, also it was written by a Samsung Ambassador on the Samsung Forums.

I also wish that Samsung does something like this. But I don't have so much faith on Samsung's software update timeframe

If you want something on the back, just use the flash.

TBF Turning your phone on risks burn in. Having on screen buttons risks burn in. Using your phone outside risks burn in. Just live a little and don't worry about something like that as much. Just my opinion.

I've tried it, but it works only when a notifications arrives, not like a led.
If you are able to use it like a led, Could you tell us your settings?
Thanks

There's an option (when you check "when a notification comes" and "and screen is off" or "always") to show it 8 second every 30 second.
BTW, it's not really reliable this app, sometime works, sometime not. Let's hope samsung will implement a similar system setting.

Never worked for me as well (S10+) ... I tried every setting, nope, the way it works is, if you wake the screen, then it works! but that is pointless ! the whole point of notification is for u to be able to see u got it without touching ur phone!
I cant believe Samsung thought they can take this out!

We like strobe lights from a distance

In the latest ASCA update, the blue light in the heart rate sensor blinks when power sharing is enabled. So, there are plenty of chances we could enable the same. Although I am pretty much ok with the current AOE implementation.

Control the LED notification light!

[APP][ROOT][1.6-4.0] ButtonLED
EDIT: I figured out that we can actually control the LED notification light with this app now. Instead of using the file for the capacitive buttons, just substitute it for one of the LED files.
Green - /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/led:green/brightness
Red - /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/led:red/brightness
Remember to also enable it in Accessibility! It still doesn't work well for any time less than 1 second, but I don't feel like that's a huge deal.
If you want to use the button LED, you can still use that file as well.
Since the OG's notification light (or frequency) is shameful to say the least, I just discovered this app today and it's sooooo handy for our phones even though it was meant for phones with no LED at all. Basically, it uses the capacitive buttons as a notification light.
Download the HDPI version and install it.
When you first open it, you have to tell it where the button backlight file is since it's different on every phone. Ours is located at /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/brightness.
Lastly, scroll down in the main menu to where it says "Enable ButtonLED in accessibility" and click on it. It'll take you to the system accessibility settings where you just have to toggle it on.
It took me a little while of playing with the settings to get it working how I wanted, and you can do the same. I have noticed a few issues here and there, but overall it works pretty great. One thing I found was that if you try to set the LED on time to anything less than 1 second, it just does a real quick flash, regardless of what length you chose. Personally, I like 1 second on, 1 second off.

No difference so far, but I don't think that I've had a notification that I haven't seen and cleared within five minutes. I'd be interested to see what the drain is if it goes unmonitored for a couple of hours.

Not with this app unfortunately. You can either tell it to use the green color or the "red" (orange) color for the LED and that's it.
Works on stock kernel?
Is this supposed to work with stock ZVC kernel?
Test works, and the logs show that ButtonLED detects and processes my notifications, but it won't light the led.
I tried everything, what he says here too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37134835&postcount=338
But terminal gave me an error creating the path.
does that means it's not supported?

[Q] Is being able to turn the LED on when the screen is active a 4.4.3 thing?

I recently switched over to the newly released 4.4.2 stock and, in the process, seem to have lost the ability for the LED light to light up when the screen is on, like I had on some custom ROMs. Is this strictly a 4.4.3 ability, or are there apps which can give this functionality on stock?
Not sure but its another battery drainer lol. I see no point in it unless for a notification IMO.

Im on 4.4.2 and my notification led (the colored led on the Home button) works when I get notifications, but the led only turns on when the screen is off. It doesnt blink with the screen on.
If I get a text message for example, the led will blink when the screen is off. Once the screen is turned on, the led shuts off, but as long as I dont view the text, then the led starts blinking again once I shut off the screen.
For anyone who needs it:
The settings for this are under Display > Home Button LED
There is an easily missable section under there too. Be sure to tap "select missed event" and choose your options in there too.

Well explain. If Ambient Screen is on, but watch is ON EVERY time I look at it. A thing I don't understand tho, is that while it's a LCD display, it saves zero power by making half the screen black with digital clock on so many watchfaces.

I've played with ambient mode, and I can conclusively say that my watch face is not "on" EVERY time I look at it. Not even close. I work at a computer all day, if I glance down at my watch while it's in ambient mode, it isn't on. I drive, and I look at my wrist, and my watch is often NOT on. I understand that it turns on more easily and tries to anticipate hwen you're trying to look at your watch, but if you're casually glancing at the watch hoping it's on (rather than moving your wrist), it's often off. That's not ambient, it's just.... more sensitive.
As for your second question, only certain LCD technologies can leverage making "half the screen black" as a power-saving measure. Basically... most LCDs still use a single light source, so regardless of how much of the screen is black, the backlight is fully on. Some LCD technologies have the ability to turn on smaller backlights directly behind certain parts of the screen, so lighting only a small area of the screen is possible and saves a lot of power. I don't know enough about the technologies to know why, aside from cost, one would choose one over the other.

Go to android wear and settings/moto 360 and click on ambient screen on and tilt to wake screen to off. This will keep ambient on all the time. The only down side is that you will have to manually click the screen or the power button to go to full screen. I hope that helps

Ambient Display No longer Continuously Flashes

Has anyone noticed that ambient display lights up upon receiving a notification but does not continue to flash like it did on previous nexus? Also it does not flash on upon picking up the device.....
I have ambient display turned on but to be honest I'm not sure my notifications even show once but I'm certain they don't show again.

Came to post this myself. It looks like Ambient Display pops up when you get the notification then never again.
Coming from Moto Display, super disappointed. I was prepared to give up the "wave" to trigger IR sensors and pulse my notifications... I wasn't prepared to give up the feature all together!
Running into the same thing. The ambient display should flash the time, date etc when picking up the phone . Maybe just a late software bug?
Not sure how many others have seen this yet...Notification LED. Mine is getting delivered today so I haven't been able to play around with it yet. It might help with the ambient display issue.

Right and I say three things.
1) Why when you lift it is it supposed to turn on ? Did Google ever say? When you pickup you phone the Display should turn on, because we know you careless about battery life.
2) When you pick up you phone why is it so hard to brush your finger on the finger print scanner if you want to display on ?
3) You think every time the phone moves and the display turns on it is not going to use more current, drain the battery ?
If Google ever allows you to turn on the display with just movement picking the phone up.
I hope Google allows people that think 2) and 3) are true to keep this "feature off"

I'll try to spell it out for you since you apparently lack the capacity to do it yourself.
Ambient Display currently does nothing. It flashes once and is gone forever, which is completely useless. You LIKE it doing nothing. Fine. Then you can turn it off and it will still do nothing. You are happy either way.
There are people who like Ambient Display when it actually works. These people are not happy that it doesn't currently do anything. If it is fixed, then they are happy. If it is fixed, you can disable it, and you are still happy because you weren't getting anything from it in the first place.
Your twisted desire to hope something doesn't work because you don't like it is asinine.
Have a good day.

How notifications work without LED?

Hi
I'm currently with a phone that has an LED notification light which is pretty convenient for me because I'm the type of persons who usually check his phone only when there's a message. Nowadays, I knew that this convenient notification LED have been discontinued
If I buy a future One Plus phone, How can I tell if I get e.g. a whatsapp message without constantly checking my phone from time to time?
P.S. I'm also not interested to have an that thing called "on screen display" that is running 24/7 just for an average 2-3 messages I recieve / day. I'm aware of software notification LED in the app store but I'm not really into software solutions because they tend to eat battery life pretty much the same way as on screen display.
I also don't really understand what's the deal about eliminating it?! if they can't find a space for it on the edges - because edges became so small nowadays - they can simply merge it somehow with the punch out lens for the front camera! or make a built-in software solution that popus out the notification on the screen ONLY when I get a message.

That's still not convenient because I may not be present beside my phone to see the notification when it's triggered. The notification LED is blinking in a nicer continuous way to tell me that there's something i need to check. I still insist that ditching it was a very silly decision towards inconvenience

AOD, if well done, does not drain any more battery than a notification LED. When you get a notification, it will only lit up a few pixels on the screen, in any shape you want. You can literally simulate a LED with AOD. Personally I use the app "always on edge", I set it up to show the name of the contact and the messaging app when I receive a text, super useful, way better than just a LED. I didn't notice any more drain in battery life, I can still very easily last a whole day of heavy use.
