Can someone try usb-c to HDMI adapter with LG G8 ? - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Hello, can someone try a usb-c to HDMI adapter with the LG G8 please ?
LG G7 was not compatible at first with Android 8 but then LG activated HDMI over USB-C with Android 9 update
Source : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78969498&postcount=24
LG G8 has Android 9 out of the box so it should work but still no proof

It doesn't look like they've disabled that functionality with the G8 (not all variants are released so keep that in mind).
I don't remember if SomeGadgetGuy showed UsbC-to-HDMI on other videos but it's definitely present in "LG G8 vs G7: Worthy of a One Year Upgrade?" around 3:05 in the video with the G8. Link to the video here: https://youtu.be/9APieviEyYI?t=185

Thank you Pak0St ! It's a good news that LG keeps video out over USB-C !
I remember having seen a video of him reviewing LG V40 and complaining that LG removed HDMI over USB-C on LG V40 and G7 because there is too much delay between the phone and the TV screen with wireless display connection (here at 2:45 https://youtu.be/hFdHQ7f14nQ?t=165 ) and previous LG phones like V30 had this feature but now with Android 9 update it has been activated.
I wonder if they will add a custom desktop mode like on Samsung and Huawei smartphones or if they will use Google's desktop mode with Android 10 update

Usb c video out works, mirroring the screen with hdmi adapters is possible. My powered hub that worked with my S8 doesn't work with the G8, but my regular usb c to hdmi adapter does. I'm about to buy a powered hub that works with a Pixel in hopes the LG will as well.
The only thing I really miss about the S8 is Dex. Google or LG needs to get on this, especially considering the silly aspect ratio scaling the mirror mode has. Google play is the only video app that properly projects the image in 16:9. I wish the others would.

I've heard that a desktop feature similar to Samsung Dex will be added from Android Q.

That's great news! Now to figure out how long it will take Q to reach the G8. The G8 is part of the Project Treble beta, so I really hope LG has planned the update soon.

Update: With a little more testing, I found my 25 dollar adapter that worked with my S8 mostly works woth the G8. The trick is to plug in only the hdmi, wait fot the mirrored screen, then plug in the power, which must be more powerful than the included wall charger. I'm using a monitor, whose usb c delivers pd power.
Looking over most adapters, it seems they're made for pd charging, but I'm curious if any will work with a wall charger. The descriptions are very vague for this purpose.
Here's the one that I have:
USB C to HDMI 4K Adapter... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FMK94BQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
It cost only 25 bux, and offers two usb 3.0 ports as well as usb c charging.
In case you're interested, here's the $54 Cheotech one that Juan Bagnell featured in his videos. It comes with ethernet and positive phone reviews.
https://www.amazon.com/CHOETECH-Multiple-Ethernet-Charging-Compatible/dp/B07673ZSD1

My G7 ThinQ (LM-G710EAW) still doesn't work with the USB-C to HDMI adapters that worked with the G5. It tries to connect but always reverts to USB Power Supply mode even if I tell it to always choose the media or photo sharing modes. I've been upgraded to Android 9 for a year now and was hoping it would kick in at some point. Any thoughts on what else might be missing?

Hi, thank you for sharing your test of this adapter, I was searching for any solid information about connecting G8 to device like this, with no success. Now only one question left: did you try to connect any USB device to adapter, simultaneously to HDMI streaming and charging?

As a minimum.
Will let you use you existing micro usb cables
Will fast charge
Supports connecting your ecisting micro otg gizmos
Tronsmart is cheaper and also supports qc but not otg.
Watch out for junk c cable. Bad fit and trickle charge only.
I'm looking into purchasing a usb type-c to HDMI cable. Is anyone aware of a program that would let me output my phone's display to my pc?

I'm pretty sure if you have the cable you don't need an extra program. It should just work.
Yep. And if your tv supports it wireless display too. Thought it would only work with LG tvs as that is what LG implied but I can sync to my samsung JS9500 just fine. Lag isn't too bad. And when doing screen changes or apps it looks like graphics glitch out but they don't. Haven't tested YouTube or my recorded videos yet. Have more important stuff to do first.

Mobile Docking Stations for Windows 10 Mobile Phones that Enable Continuum

I thought a central list of Mobile Docking Stations that are confirmed to work with your Windows 10 Phone to enable Continuum would be a good central information repository for anyone looking for a dock for their respective phone. Please post Phone Brand & Model , then Post a list of dongles or docks that you have personally tested / owned and can confirm work. See my example. This will make searching the thread easier for someone.

We have the Idol 4S WIndows phone in Canada available from MS store (Black Friday Deal 199.99 unlocked).
I have this phone - been using it for the past 2-months.
Continuum docks that work:
Wavlink WL-UHP3403-A (can get for 30-40 dollars)
Wavlink WH-UHP3D01G (can get for 100-130 dollars)
I have both of these and I can confirm that they work correctly ... the more expensive one has Gigabit Ethernet in addition to HDMI out 4K support.

Actually I returned it to the Windows store ... I liked the interface - but I didn't really like the limited nature of the apps that are available for it ... really it is too bad - you would think that Microsoft would learn from their mistakes (a la windows RT and CE) ..
The desktop interface without the ability to truly multitask is really, really limiting. So it ended up a bit of a frustrating experience. Oh well - I have moved on .... I currently have the Essential PH-1 ...
Cont. and Samung Dex is an hobby , thats all. No real purpose

The MS Display Dock would work for a USB C device. But, if you don't need KB or mouse, then any device with Wn10 on it will cast. Even an 830 will cast to my TCL Roku tv.
For the HP Elite x3, besides the official dock, I bought an O-shaped USB-C dongle from a brand called Baseus. Doesn't work all the time, especially from power-on/restart; but when it does, it works great. Comes with a Type-C port with PD too, so virtually no port lost.
At the time I bought it, I requested to the store clerk that I would like to test it with my device. Then I did my "magic trick", and she was in awe.

Hdmi screen mirroring via usb cable not working

Helped a friend buy this. We were watching movies via wireless screen sharing (miracast) and it was OK but kept stuttering and dropping WiFi.
So I suggested getting an hdmi usb-c cable with power charging (4k). I was very surprised when it didn't work! Tried everything including downloading dex to the phone.
Connected the same cable to my s8 plus and it worked beautifully (dex) !
So why not the Samsung a50? Never experienced this on any phone before and have been connecting to TV this way for 10 years.
Need a different /special cable? Or no go on this device and can only do via wireless?
Thx
I haven't ever used HDMI mirroring on a phone but as far as my knowledge of Type-C goes, you need USB 3.1 to support all the alternate modes including HDMI and DisplayPort. The A50 comes with USB 2.0, so there is no possibility of getting Display-Out from the USB port.

thanks for that explanation, I'm guessing this the same reason we can't use type c 3.5mm jacks?
by that respect, pretty much any type c 3.1 can output through hdmi?
Thanks,
Scott
Type-C as a standard is a mess. I don't think you are required to support alternate modes in USB 3.1, so I suppose there are USB 3.1 Type-C devices that still don't output video.
Regarding audio, there is Audio Accessory Mode for Type-C and the concept of active and passive headphones/dongles, so not all dongles will work.
samsung A50 simply doesnt support dex. only s8 s9 s10 and Note 8 9 10.
getting usb c to hdmi wouldnt solve your problem.
there is how ever one possible solution, which is the universal android usb to hdmi cable. it uses ezcast app (same app for wireless). mirroring your phone but wont display netflix etc on your tv.
Samsung A20
So, I know that the A-series doesn't support DeX, but I was hopeful that it might still have the capability to project to a lapdock (like the HP Elite X3 or Nexdock 2) via USB-C and display even crudely (so, not the fully optimized DeX-ified desktop mode, but maybe just a mirror?), ideally allowing for keyboard/touchpad input as well. Basically I'm trying to come up with a solution for my mom whose company is phasing out the laptop she's accustomed to working on in favor of these lousy Samsung A20s, which she's gonna have a lot of trouble seeing and interfacing with on such a tiny screen and without a full keyboard (she's in her 60s). The lapdock thing is the only idea I've been able to come up with (though, it sucks that the A20s don't support DeX), but I'm open to any other suggestions if you think the lapdock route is a dead end. Thanks!

The A50 doesn't support MHL(display out protocol) at all for some reason, which is quite disappointing. At least wireless display casting works well.

Has anyone tried a USB-C hub with the G8? What is supported?

Wondering if we have support for:
RJ-45 Ethernet jack
microsd/SD card readers
HDMI-Out
Extra USB-A ports
An example of the device is here: https://www.amazon.ca/VAVA-Adapter-...b&qid=1563056649&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
They are advertised for macbook but USB-C is obviously universal so it works with computers and stuff, wondering what kind of support we have on G8 if anyone has one to test.
I thought of this use case, use the HDMI to send to a monitor, and 2 of the usb slots for keyboard and mouse.... turn the G8 into a little laptop. I might order one to try it, in theory it could work but I have my doubts.
I didn't try the video out, but mouse and keyboard work fine through mine.

cool thanks, the video isn't even as important because wifi screen sharing is a thing too
Everything is working on my LG G8s ThinQ like before on my LG V40 ThinQ, LG G7 ThinQ.
The only problem is power drop when you connect multiple devices.
I tried an HDMI screen (it shares your Android screen and hopefully, no lags like with WiFi Screen Sharing), Ethernet connection, Microsoft multimedia keyboard (integrated touchpad on the keyboard), Western Digital My Passport and SanDisk DualDrive.
PS: The only thing I still didn't tried is Netflix via HDMI to USB-C. On my Galaxy S8 I couldn't have the images but well the sound but on my V40 it worked so, I'm wondering if LG isn't implementing Something to make it work. I must ask my manager
I found an adapter...
I was searching for an HDMI to USB-C adapter and tried a UGreen 6-in-1 adapter. It works perfectly. You can hook up your phone charger to the adapter to charge your phone while outputting to the TV/Monitor. It also has 2 USB 3.0 ports and SD/MicroSD slots. I got it to use my AKG Lyra microphone on my phone while making video calls for better audio. I've hooked my TV AND microphone to my phone so I can mount my phone on a stand and use the back (much better) camera for my calls. I use the TV to monitor the video. It works great! Search Amazon for " UGREEN USB C Hub 6 in 1 Type C to HDMI 4K " to find (I paid $25US). (New to xda and haven't posted enough to post links)
Hope this helps!

Useful informations! I was thinking about one of those things, just to try out some kind of desktop mode when/IF it will be available on LG G8s, and a simple usb-c to hdmi seems to me too limiting as melvinmajor pointed out before (power drop).

Question HDMI over USB?

Hi,
has there been any rumors about HDMI over USB so far?
If I am not mistaken, this functionality was disabled by Google in the previous pixel phones...
Good question but haven't heard anything yet...
It never was HDMI, it is DisplayPort. HDMI over USB C doesn't exist.
Please add fricking desktop mode to AOSP of Android(I mean native one not gimmick one at Dev Settings). Damn why this is soo hard? You just released a Car Android in it. Why you are not trying anything on desktop mode feature. You already have working framework and API's for it. Samsung, LG, Huawei, Moto using it. And it's working damn well with little mods these OEM makes. Please Google bring official desktop mode to Android phones.

i tried a usb C to hdmi adapter on the regular pixel 6 today and no luck. i assume it's not going to work with the 6 pro, im going to try with a 6 pro when it gets delivered tomorrow. google hasn't added display out over usb in any of it's phones, I assume because they don't want to directly affect google cast sales

Thank you for trying this out.
It's just a shame considering how good a desktop mode could be looking at the implementations made by Samsung, Huawei and Motorola...
Yeh, we need this capability in today's world! Cheers

Except it wouldn't affect Chromecast sales in most cases. It's a completely different use case - casting is mostly a very limited "play this media on this display" thing, and most people would still opt for a $50 dongle if it means they don't have to hook their phones up to the TV.
Whereas display output over a wired connection would be mostly used for desktop (partial) replacement, where a Cast dongle wouldn't work anyway.
