LG G8 OTG dismount and Wifi discounect issue - LG G8 Questions & Answers

Just upgraded both our lines from LG G6 to LG G8 Verizon, I wish we stayed with LG G6 as we were very happy with the performance. The LG G8 phone overall is good as we wanted something faster with more memories. Here are problems and what I have done to troubleshoot.
I travel a lot and I always put movies on memory card and watch it during flights. Unfortunately, with LG G8 inconsistent USB OTG get dismounted. It could be after 5 minutes or 3 minutes or 10 minutes so on. This is the same setup I used with LG G6.
I have bought a new high quality OTG cable, used different memory cards with different sizes from USB 2.0 to 3.0 and lower power usage with no differences. Reset the phone completely, Used VLC vs. default "Video" Player with the same result Even I thought initially, it could be related to power saving mode, so I went under "power saving Exclusions" mode and exclude using VLC and Video player, restart the phone still same result. while watching movies the movie suddenly stops and in few second USB dismount then remount again. Well, I tried different file format with same result.
I even completely disabled "air Motion" that I thought it may interfare during playing. Locked the video while palying, with no luck. Troubleshooting more in depth, I have noticed phone will dismount and remount while USB memory card attached to OTG cable without running any videos, and while phone and USB cable securely on the table, so that concluded me problems is not with the video file, or memory card just the way USB port behave while using OTG cable. Phone fast charging work perfectly, and I can connect the phone with my laptop using cable and set it in :file transfer" mode or any other modes and use it for hours with no issues, so ports works under different options with no issues.
This happens on our both phones. So I went to another city near by and exchange my phone, but same problem exist with the new phone. Of course LG 800xxx tech support is useless.
Also, another problems is WIFI connectivity. No matter which wifi I get connected, phone after some times, it could be 30 minutes or it will drop the WIFI connection in few seconds and reconnect again. Again I excluded wifi in "Power saving Exclusions" and hopeing that fix the problems. Reset the network settings on phone, reset the phone, rest router,.. with no luck. I tell you the Wifi discount is not as bad as OTG cable, but in the past I could use LG G6 whatsApp and some other calling apps talk for hours using wifi calling with no issues, but with LG G8, it could be in 15 minutes or 30 minutes,,,,,i loose the wifi connection for a second, then the call will drop and I have to redial again.
I hope LG instead of deny and saying we never heard the issues, focus and try to solve the problems. I probably going to sell the phones on eBay as I am not on contract with Verizon, either will be buying two another LG G6, or go with new Samsung Notes

Do you have a link to the OTG cable you purchased? I'm looking to get one so that I read other SD cards without having to turn the phone off and swap cards.

Search on Amazon for "UGREEN Micro USB to USB, Micro USB 2.0 OTG" . 2 for $6.99, you can't bit the price. Quality also very good.
Good luck

Have you ever tested the OTG cable?
Thx

Ah, yes! It came in the mail yesterday. I ended up purchasing this one: https://amzn.to/2ZzElkU. USB 3.0. 2 pack for $7.99. Red, which matches my G8 [emoji16].
Matches my phone and I haven't had any disconnection issues with it. I used it to watch a 3 minute video, skipped around a few places in a movie to see if that would trip it up and then browsed a few photos. It never disconnected.

LG G8 Verizon playing movies using OTG cables still issues
Well, I returned those LG G8 Verizon six months ago. I've just bought another LG G8 phone, updated to Android 10. ordered the OTG cable that " WiseMan White" suggested. (https://amzn.to/2ZzElkU) Now after 4 -5 minutes or sometimes 10 minutes, the movies stopped and pause but no dismounting and nothing responds for a minute, then after 1 minute, I can press play again. This goes on and on. I ordered another 2 different brand OTG cables from Amazon, same problems. So, it seems like Android 10 fix some problems and won't dismount anymore. But it is still useless to play a complete movie. Again I can transfer the same movies to the phone, or micro SD card in the phone, with no problems. It is just problem with OTG (C type to female USB) and playing movies. (Photo and music is no problems) I used these OTG cables with LG G6 and LG G7 that we own, and played movies with no problems. I have disabled hand motion ID and lock the movies incase any interfering, tried VLC player, etc. but same problem. So it is appears there is a problem with LG G8 and OTG cable playing movies. . I send email with detail information to LG, they said they will research and let me know, but no reply for over 6 months.
However, I tried C type/ Micro SD card adaptor, and it works fine. So it seems like processor can't handle playing movies using OTG cable conjunction with USB memory card. I guess this phone is not too popular and people in this post don't use it for playing movies using OTG cable and memory card. But, I personally like LG phones better. I also tested these OTG cables with Samsung Note 9 and played movies perfectly.

MHL & USB host

Anyone know if it's possible to use MHL in conjunction with a microUSB to USB host adaptor to output to HDMI and access an external USB drive at the same time? That'd make the SGS2 an amazing portable media unit.
No, it is not posible. Its an either/or connection to the micro USB port.
Shame, because as you say that would really be a great thing. MHL consortium are considering a number of improvements to the 2.0 MHL spec, so in future devices this may be a possibility.
So MHL can't be used when I'll plug a USB-Hub?
No, sadly not.
It's a shame - for now I'd prefer micro USB & separate HDMI port so USB can be utilised as well as an external display.
As would I, and a lot of others I suspect.
But you've got 16 GB memory and can copy your stuff to the memory and watch it later via MHL on your Flat? So this is not a big problem, I think

Yes, but 16Gb of FAT32 and you can't copy a file > 4Gb
I would use allshare to stream the movie or whatever to your phone from a laptop and connect the phone to TV via the MHL HDMI adapter...that way you have access to ur laptop's data without being hardwired to it

Not that I'm aware of...
I bought one from Ebay and can't really do anything good with it. Display shows briefly for 3-4 seconds on TV then disappears again. Don't know why.....I hope it's not the device itself because I tested 2 phones, they were bought at the same time, but none of them would work correctly....
If by generic you mean a not samsung one or one not dedicated to the SGS2 then i actually use a one, from ebay or someting like that, everything works perfect you just cant forget to plug power to it, and about the not working one, it seems mine gets jammed by gsm signal (i.e. when receiving a call), so from time to time the image disappears in a blink of noise, maybe that is your problem too, try it in airplane mode.
Oh, I think I misread that question - I have actually used a generic one with my SGSII (a prototype from the MHL consortium) and it worked fine!

Uhm no. I've been streaming with WIFI through MHL no problem for MONTHS. Using the Original Samsung MHL connector of course.
I have to put mine in offline mode to be able to use the MHL adapter.....
As for USB-OTG no luck yet.....
On Amazon, Ebay, DealExtrem ... you will find adapters that can do 3 things at a time:
- output HDMI
- let phone work as usb host, so that you can plug kbd, mouse, and external HDD (second wifi card, wired ethernet ...); once you have the usb A plug, just pub a hub
- recharge the phone (what is not possible with the legacy short OTG cable).
+ read memory cards
Such devices are sold as MHL devices. Some MHL devices don't to all that.
Take care. MHLv2 is more complex than MHLv1.

Could you post a link as an example for such a device, that works properly (if you've tested, or you know it works) ?
Thank you
I can post links, but ... I have not tested any of those. And don't know any one personally who tested it.
Cable:

http://www.dx.com/p/5-in-1-micro-us...n-micro-usb-adapter-black-257780#.U8HYDNePul0
Monobloc:
http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Micro-USB-Ho..._MobilePhoneDataCables_JN&hash=item258600844e
I don't like the monobloc version; I fear it's too heavy, and may help breaking the phone plug.
There are all sorts of OTG and MHL cables. I have seen OTG dongles as short as 4cm (monobloc), with small cable (8cm: 4-8€), with long cable (1.5m .... should be 7 feet), pure HDMI (passive cable, no card reader, 8-12€), VGA (including very cheap HDMI to VGA converter, 20-30€ ... including sound output). In some case, you need to buy accessories (extra power supply, extra uUSB cable, extra HDMI cable). Also seen a very cute hybrid card reader: http://dx.com/p/285865 (I love this product design, and I love this URL syntax )
Don't forget that there can be mistakes in item description.
Here I have described how to build an external battery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54036759&postcount=17
On previous phone, I just soldered additional battery to internal one; on my new phone, I will do something more complex, and more flexible.
Loosing power via OTG/MHL is not a fatality. Most phone have an other hidden power input:
généric, that uses the USB plug:
http://www.dx.com/p/reverse-qi-wire...arger-receiver-for-micro-usb-cellphone-312805
TRIPLE CHECK POLARITY; I took the wrong one; have to fold the cable.
So ... even if your OTG/MHL module takes power from your USB, and can not recharge your phone, the specific shell can charge your phone the other way So, you need to build an internal specific module:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK7PRJ4SiK0
S2 specific back shell, so called receiver:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2013-newest-wireless-charger-for-samsung-galaxy-s2/1266101036.html
http://www.exportprive.com/en/batte...reless-charger-set-for-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/QI-Wireless-Charger-for-Samsung-Galaxy_821969998.html?s=p
The SGS2 is not designed to accept wireless chargers, so, you have two options:
- solder and take the pins out (cf youtube) (do not solder coild to battery, or you could overcharge the batt, and burn your phone ... I mean, physically set fire)
- find an item that includes back shell + specific battery (exportprive)
Many recent phones have the internal connectors, so you just need to change the back-cover. In this case, the software will be able to know the charger is wireless (as opposed to AC, and USB; advanced battery tools will show those 3 possibilities). I believe the motherboard for my HTC One M8 is designed to have those pins, but I can't find the specific cover yet (maybe in a few months); only found it for M7.

Xperia S USB OTG

I have been trying to use some flash drives as external storage however I ran into some trouble.
1. First of all without rooting and getting a kernel or something (which I cannot do as my phone is sim and bootloader locked to o2 right now) it can only read FAT32 formatted drives rather than NTFS.
This means I have to either split >4gb files into two smaller pieces or re-encode. I don't like re-encoding because of the great hdmi output so why not carry full blu-ray rips
2. Does anybody know the power output of the USB port in the Xperia S? Is it something like 100ma or less? As you can see from my photos below here are my tests,
Sony 16gb Micro Vault Click USM-L (pink)...........works fine.
Sony 16gb Micro Vault Click USM-P (black)...........works fine.
Verbatim Stor N Go 32GB Micro USB (tiny one)..........USB Power Consumption Error
I don't like the fact that it is hit and miss when choosing drives and don't always want to carry around a powered USB hub or a Sony Ericsson Livedock instead of the tiny drives and the lightweight micro usb->female usb cable.
Its meant to be "USB On-the-go" not "USB can't go because my arms are tired and bag is full"
There is NO information on either Sony's nor Verbatim's website regarding the power consumption of their flash drives.
Any suggestion's?

hi i also bought a cheapy one from ebay and its perfectly fine
yes usb keyboard and mouse works fine, tried logitech k800 with unifying receiver and also tried microsoft keyboard and mouse desktop combo with big ass usb receiver. i have not tried bluetooth yet but that would be preferable to me because it will take one less port.
i would also like to hear about the livedock or if anyone has made a a simple y cable with "micro usb male" (to go into phone) split into "female usb" (for usb device) and "female microusb" (for charging input).
In fact why not go the whole kaboodle
A. Keyboard & Mouse & Headset & Phonejoy controller & Smartwatch : simultaneous Bluetooth
B. Flash Drive or USB Hub with multiple drives: Micro USB to USB adapter
C. TVOUT : HDMI
D. Charging : Female Micro USB input from same spliiter cable as B
now its a full desktop, NES, SNES, whatever all controlled by any of the above and the damn thing is the size of your hand
View attachment 962244
Basically does something like this exist?
This cable should in theory have the same functionality of the bulky livedock?
I was thinkink about same thing: y cable, so we were able to access flash drive (memory card) along with charging the phone. But i think it is not possible with JUST a cable. I think it is possible with live dock, but live dock probably got some sort of electronic curcuit board which controls flash drive and charging at the same time. Unless you would buy live dock for other phone (P in example), take curcuit board out and do DIY.

That all sounds really cool to experiment with, but thats alot of gear to cart around... wouldn't it be easier just to buy say a PSP(homebrew) or perhaps a PSvita? Emulation is wasted on a touch screen.
The kernel mods in the dev section have already enabled ntfs fs reading amongst other things, you could flash these right now or the first roms will probably have this soon which should help you out quite a bit.
I bought the livedock for the XPS hoping it would work for usb charging via computer, it does not; a Y cable is a good idea tho... unfortunately the dock just does not suit the XPS at all, does not sit correctly, u have to lean the dock usb connector on the ground for the whole setup to be "somewhat" stable and just looks silly, not to mention unsafe.
Those clove youtube vids area bit of a con imo.

Does anybody know where we can buy the original Sony Ericsson USB OTG? Also, does anyone know the part number? I do not want to use any other brands. Hope someone could help
Any reason why? You can buy it of ebay for just a couple of pounds and is working fine.
I connected Logitech RumblePad to my xperia S (Using some samsung USB adapter)- including vibrations, so i think power output is pretty ok.

hi it wouldn't be too much to carry around, consider having a phone and a vita and a laptop? at what cost. you'll still always need at least 2 devices, you phone and another. now you can have all three from one nice looking device and can take each accessory when required. ie all three to a hotel, just the keyboard for working on, just the gamepad when you feel like it. check out the freedom pro keyboard (better than a laptop's) or the phonejoy for a full vita beating experience (comfort wise - wireless on big screen anywhere)
and minimising what we need to carry is the whole point of finding if such a y cable works because then we don't have the added bulk of the Livedock...
thanks for your review of the livedock, even more reason to want that cable! I cant believe there is no grip, i wouldn't have been able to assume that from the Clove videos. its a bit silly that the Xperia P has the new smartdock but because they put our ports on opposite sides we can't use it
i noticed the devs have a kernel for ntfs compatibility but i cant use it as i havent even received my sim unlock code from my network let alone finding out if my locked bootloader can be unlocked after this. plus ive just discovered how bad the yellow tint issue is on my phone, so its a bit of a wait for me!

yeah but i don't think the wireless receiver for the rumblepad takes up as much power as constant reading from and powering a flash drive would. the wireless receiver doesn't need much compared to that and the controller itself has its own battery
nevertheless you could be right in suggesting that the power output is ok as it powers some but not all drives, so if its not power output then there is some other reason for the compatibility issue with each usb device... so we should do a list of what drives work and which dont

it looks like this cable will work perfectly fine, just branded and looks pretty nice actually. however id be weary of choosing this when there are right angled micro usbs on some adapters...these are more practical in my opinion after having used my similarly priced generic ebay otg cable and also the standard charger cable that comes with the phone

I know the right angled ones will be better, but i just love the build quilty of the Nokia one so will probably give it a try.
To anyone interested in OTG cables:
Guys, the Nokia OTG cable works just fine and is VERY good quality and very common anywhere (quite cheap as well).
Tested by me. Already connected my 16GB Ultra Speed Transcend USB drive and works fine.
I've been using OTG since day 1 when i got the unit - like the OP says, the power consumption of the USB port for devices are hit-and-miss.
Some usb drives works great, some consumes too much power and cannot be powered on; so far, my wireless keyboard+touchpad set (rapoo) works great.

USB OTG + Charge?

I just recently got a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and so far I'm quite happy with it --- except one thing, I cant find a cable that lets me charge the tablet *and* use the USB Host (OTG) port... (i.e. read files off a USB drive or play a game with a USB game pad while keeping the tablet plugged in)
Is there a way to do this? it would seem to me that all it needs is a splice to give power to the Power +/- pins on the connector while keeping the OTG Data +/- pins active...? (I know nothing about the pinout so I could be wrong on this)
Just to be clear I want to use the OTG adapter WHILE CHARGING (I've found one device that gives both these options but says "only one function may be used at a time")
Ideas?
Discussed dozen times in 10.1 forum. Actually it is not possible. Build an otg + power cable myself but it only works with timing and with a specific procedure... quite annoying. Wait for a custom rom somewhere in the future as I do.
You may have issues trying this, OTG cables are iffy under Jelly Bean. Some may work, some may not. In fact, Google removed references to OTG support for Nexus devices last November since OTG is so spotty. Splicing a cable that might work may kill it. Decent battery-powered USB and SD hubs are available and bypass the OTG problems. I have the RavPower RP WD01 and love it. The USB port will support drives upto 3T. It also has an SD card slot.

Powering the USB devices isn't a problem, I have a nice hub that powers them without issue, even extremely power-hungry devices. I was wanting to charge the tablet's battery while using the OTG adapter (original thought was for USB-gamepad-ing since high-requirement games drain battery, but I've since started using a PS3 controller over bluetooth so I can use the OEM charge cable and wireless for gaming --- but USB drives I'd have to copy the files over to internal flash or a MicroSD card to view while charging and i've found that the cards dont like files that are 8gb in size... (FAT-32 restriction iirc))

I saw that when I google'd but thought maybe there had been some new developments (especially with how this site's members love to tinker with electronics and write custom firmware). It's not a huge issue, since the Note 10.1 has amazing battery life (it's actually matching or doing BETTER than my iPad in most circumstances) I just like to never run the battery down low.. (why cant tablets have user-replaceable/swapable batters like most phones?!)
Thanks for the info!

[Q] Damaged USB port?

Last week I wanted to plug in my phone into our shop's stereo, using the the official included USB-C to 1/8th headphone adapter. I plug in the phone, fire up my music, but the audio continues out of the phone's speakers.
So I unplug and replug in the adapter, and the aux cable a couple of times with no luck, even restarted the phone to see if that would do it.
At that point I thought that somehow the adapter was damaged, so I ordered a replacement (making sure to get one with a DAC [sidenote: **** any manufacturer that makes you not only have to get an adapter for headphones, but makes you have to get a SPECIAL adapter])
No dice with the new adapter.
I went a couple of days not really worrying about it, the phone charges just fine, like it always has, so I didn't think it was a hardware issue. I thought it was just bad luck with these stupid, terrible, superfluous, awful adapters.
But today I had to pull a file off the phone to my computer, using multiple known good Type-C to USB-A 3.0 cables.
Phone says it's charging, but I didn't get the notification to select USB mode, and USB ADB debugging never showed up.
Windows is constantly making the device connected, disconnected sounds, and device manager is showing me an "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)"
Is it possible that somehow the data connections on the port on the phone are damaged, without it affecting power delivery? I have no idea how that would work, Like I said, it charges just fine, and all my cables feel pretty secure when plugged in, there's no play or wobble and I don't know what to do to troubleshoot it further.
You can try to clean the port
I have the same issue. Ive requested a replacement aux dongle from Google and still no go. It charges fine, connects to my computer fine adb, data transfer etc all work, only for music it continues to play from the speaker even when connected.
Yes it's possible for the phone to get power but have no data connection it's happend to my Nexus 6p I paid for the insurance so I had to pay the deductible to replace I have had some data issues with the pixel 2 xl but always seems to come back after a few days could just be a dirty connection since I work construction and some times gets very dirty.
But I'd be careful of what cables you buy when they are usb a to c but seem to have no issues with c to c
I have the same problem and are trying to work with Google for a fix. I have tried everything and they are pretty useless. I am now requesting a new device as I'm still under warranty.

Usb stuck no longer works

Afternoon all,
Just out of interest anyone notice that they can't transfer files over OTG USB anymore mine was working fine a few weeks ago. Bought myself a USB C stick recently and thought I'd transfer some videos across but it's not recognised. Did think could be usb but the other one that I usually use via Samsung adapter doesn't work either. But work in s4 tablet. Last update was May and just security I believe. Cheers
Yes my SM-G960W S9 just randomly decided that USB file transfer should stop working and OTG devices are not recognized any longer. USB charging properly. Any storage device when connected the phone says device connected for charging. My wife's phone same and purchased same time is working fine. Tried many things like cleaning contacts different cables different memory sticks. All of which work on her phone. Have fun figuring this out. Been trying for months.
