8GB/128GB China ROM - Redmi Note 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Had my Note 8 Pro for 3 weeks now, previous phone was the Mi A2 Lite (SD625 3/32), android one was fun, but lacks certain features I wanted (also had a problem with screen flickering too), so switching to the Note 8 Pro was a huge leap. I didn't had much time experiencing MIUI 10 (again, previous phone was a stock android); immediately updated mine to MIUI 11 as soon as I connected to the internet; should've tried out the v10 first to have a solid comparison.

Again, it's a 8GB/128GB China ROM so here's what I've got so far:
Even though I haven't tested out the other MIUI phones, other than a Redmi 5A(which is a very solid entry-level phone) I can compare it's performance based on reliable YouTube reviewers (if some of you even believe them) these reviewers are GSMArena, TechZG, TechUtopia, C4ETech, Technology Jock, NickBrazer, Tech for Luddites, and some of my local (Philippines) tech reviewers; Sulit Tech Reviews, Yugatech, Unbox Diaries, and Techbeans.
From there, some of there review units are 6/64GB Global, so I have, somehow, a bit of information as to how the 6/64GB Global performs, also, based on the Antutu Score (which is not that 'reliable', I dare say) the 6/64 is far better than my 8/128 CN. First result had me on 289k compared to the 290k of the 6/64, then later attempts, only gave 283k
Also since this is a China Version, there's no Google Pay, third-party Launchers can't be used, maybe because of theme resources error, idk, but Poco Launcher compensates for that, I also tried side-loading the chinese version basic apps (GetApps, Themes, Browser, etc) I only succeeded with changing the Browser; the GetApps Global version is a totally different app from the Chinese variant, the Themes app cannot be "updated" to the Global because the Global's latest version number is lower than my Themes Apps' bare version, so there's that.
But comparison aside, I can really feel the perks of having 8GB RAM. The G90T is powerful, no kidding.
Also, if anyone have any questions or want me to try something with the Chinese Variant, feel free to ask below.

I just bought mine on Ali with global rom. Did you put a TWRP and root your phone already? Is there any specific way to do so or just like global ones, no differences?

You can install Playstore and gOOgle services with inbuilt Chinese market... I've been installed it and use b4 flashed global firmware... Btw, phone is awesome... Fast & stable, only thing that is missing are custom roms 4 it...

I did install the Google Play Services, works well, but not to full extent; "Ok google" doesn't work, which is a feature I can live without, but what bothers me is that my location history can't be recorded.

Will we ever have cameras with good quality?

a question. We will never have a rom cooked for mi max with the correct drivers for the camera? now begin to cook the rom with android O and for when xiaomi release android nogout for the mi max, will have already abandoned the cooking for android nogout and so on. we can never install a rom cooked with good camera because the cameras are of very low quality because never wait for the release the drivers for start to cook new releases of android. This is a question Not a scolding. just in case.. sorry for my bad english
Don't know what you mean by correct drivers, but devs are just that, devs... not magicians. We can't make it up for the crappy hardware, nobody can...
And what is up with all those camera complaints!? It's not like you didn't know what you are buying when paing 1/3 the price of those so called flagship phones.
Look at the Max 2... Worst SoC, a litle bigger battery, better camera chip -> double price!!!
So my counter question to your question is what did you expect for the price you paid? DSLR-like camera?

I say that the cooked ROMs always come with the generic driver because they are always with a version for which there is no official support. For example the mi max has not yet release its rom of android 7.0, therefore there are no drivers for the camera for the roms cooked in that version. And now when xiaomi release the rom with android 7.0 then the cooks will already have abandoned android 7.1 for android O and so on. Obviously you do not understand what you read. And you do not have to respond rudely.

Ok, you got me. I guess you know how roms are cooked. My bad, I'll shut up now and never speak again about these stuff. Sorry
If you allow me before I go back in the hole I came from... Why stating facts is considered rude? Just curious... Happens often lately...
why is everyone so nasty on this site?

I totally agree. And I think the HDR of the stock camera is actually pretty great.
That is until it comes to evening/night shots.....but hey, for the money it's still great!
I have said it before. For the price, the camera is good, especially in good light.
Best phone camera I have used is Nokia lumia 1020. I find the camera on my mi max is fine in decent light. If I need good photos I use a camera, anyone remember them?

He wasn't being rude, he was just stating the facts. For a $300 device the camera is good for every day use. It may not be the best in low light but not many are in this price range. The camera seems the same to me in any ROM, I don't see a difference in the picture quality. The hardware just isn't as capable as a flagship phone and HDR really doesn't do much.

Redmi note 5 pro Automatically updating

Hi
My redmi note 5 pro was running on 9.2.4 (which is the most stable version in my opinion, u guys may have other opinions) . Yesterday n8, i put my phone on charging, when i checked today mrng, i found that, my redmi note 5 pro got updated to 9.2.13 automatically. I am 100% sure that i disabled automatic update in settings . Anyone know how does it happened?. My phone is connected to wifi network 24×7.
After that I again rolled back to 9.2.4, but again it's auto updating.
Anyone know, how to disable it??

Everybody knows this such a bad manufacturer tendency to force auto updates on their devices. Im sure if many people asks Xiaomi about this, they will tell that this is a bug, but my opinion is that they did it purposely. And nothing we can do here.
My humble advice is to use latest version because its really better, many bugs fixed there.

If it was any other OEM, i would surely update my phone. But unfortunately it's xiomi. They will only release buggy updates.
For redmi note 5 pro Indian version , xiomi released more than 5 updates , none of them are bug Free (9.2.13 was somewhat bug free, but its not as good as 9.2.4)
One thing i noticed that, these automatic update was not taking place before 1 week. My phone was running on 9.2.4 for past 2-3 months without auto updates like these.
Update your phone to 9.5.19 and you wont regret it (most stable ROM with better battery life) and be happy that xiaomi is rolloing out software updates quickly
Yeah xiaomi seems to do at least some work with software, compared to other manufactorers

Absolutely true.
They are ruining there own image with these kind of buggy updates
As you may know android source code consists of many many lines of code, and it is only increasing. As you also may know, adding some features leads to increase in code lines, which may (and in long run will) introduce some bugs. This is a rule. (I am not talking about bricking, introduced by a reasoned decision of company, to force people have a latest software, to cut costs and ease being)
Debugging is a hard work, and needs resources. Different manufactorers apply different amounts of resources to debugging, and it is a big off topic subject.
Right now I can compare latest Sony phone with Xiaomi phone, and see that Xiaomi did a much bigger work in latest years with software than Sony, which stuck in 3 years old software.

Do you plan on getting the Mi Mix 4?

We don't know a lot about the Mi Mix 4 yet. We can assume it will have small bezels and some sort of pop-up/slider camera mechanism. The Mi Mix 3 had a slider, but it sounds like the Mi Mix 4 will have a pop-up camera. Assuming this is the case, do you plan on getting it?
There's really not a lot of information out there about the Mi Mix 4 yet. There have been some renders made based purely off speculation. It will most likely be a 5G device and feature the Snapdragon 855 or 855+. But the display size, cameras, RAM, battery, and more everything else is unknown. Are you thinking about getting it?

Do you think its going to be a total beast and will you use MIUI or flash a custom rom ?
I always use miui I actually like it. Makes xiaomi my fav manufacturer. Yea they are always beasts. It'll either have 2 cameras or three. Probably 3. The 855+ 12GB ram biggest unless they do something stupid and have a 16gb version lmao. Big screen. 90hz. That's all I need honestly is miui at 90hz.
Fun fact you can overclock the k20 pros screen to 85hz

So will it be Global Model upon release ?
The Price is totally out of reach and not really liking how it turned out to be honest, far too futuristic with that surround screen.
Possibly may wait for Xiaomi Mi 10 next March (if I can).
Well after months of being teased, I'm pretty disappointed. I was hoping Xiaomi would stay true to form and produce a flagship phone at a budget price but at ¥19,999 or £2257.00 or USD 2807.00 it's worth more than my car.
I don't really care about the display, although it is impressive, nor about the latest snapdragon processor or 5G.
I can't really see any devs buying it to develop custom roms or gcam.
Hopefully Xiaomi or Redmi will produce a budget phone with a 108mp camera I can afford.
I have to go now, so I can sulk.

Meizu 16T (SD855, 6.5″ SAMOLED, 4500mAh) - information, reviews and discussion

Bought a Meizu 16T during black friday day for $282 at Meizu Online Store on Aliexpress. The phone arrived today.
First impression:
+ It feels really light and comfortable in the hand (183g), Its made of plastic which I prefer over glass.
+ As usual on phones from Meizu the build quality is great.
+ Nice notchless design. Got the purple version which I like a lot.
+ The screen is big and vibrant. I really like the 18.6 aspect ratio. Wider than most other phones which is great when reading. Hate super-tall phones.
+ Most phones from meizu are a bit laggy (due to poor software optimization) but this phone feels really fast.
- No global firmware yet which is a big problem. I am on Flyme 8.0.0.0A. It was easy to install google services and play store but several apps do not work (Netflix, HBO etc).
Does anyone else have this phone?

To my knowledge, there is no custom rom support yet. However, the phone has just been released so there is a good chance that their will be some custom roms in the future.
BTW, several different gcam mods work out of the box on 16T. I played around with a couple of different mods yesterday. However, almost all of them suffer from some problems like low color saturation. The stock camera seems to be decent but a custom made gcam mod for 16T would be fantastic.
What are the things on the glass? Bubbles? Cracks?

No, it was probably some smudges on the screen when I took the photo (alternatively just reflections). The screen is in perfect condition.
I just found a working version of Netflix for 16T:
https://consumer.huawei.com/en/comm...s-Apps]Working-Netflix-Version/topicId_38359/
A experimental version of MoKee Rom for 16T is now available.
https://reameizu.com/how-to-flash-m...0KUb_OZP2giyMCWQlkElkGBTbI_sU7D_4K9tUl3IIPaoI
However, I will wait until a more stable version is released before I go through the hassle of trying to install this in on my phone.
Thx for posting this. Very intriguing phone. Really the only issue is software. Well, also the mediocre camera. Anyway it's price : performance ratio is unrivaled so it should be popular with a lot of techies. Custom roms should follow suit. And hopefully a custom gcam also. I might take a chance on this thing.
In Flyme, do you get full English menus when the system language is set to English? Some reviews on Aliexpress seem to indicate it's a mix of both Chinese and English. But I'm guessing they must be referring to Meizu specific apps.

Yes, the menu is fully in English except for the "Flyme labratory" sub menu (which is not important anyway). I have been using 16T now 3 months. I like it as much now as I did when I wrote my first impressions review. The most important advantage for me is the width of the screen. The with of 16T is 78mm compared to 74-76 mm which is the width used for most other "large" phones. It really makes a difference, you get a much better viewing experience compared to these super tall phones which are fashionable nowadays. Another advantage is the lightness, it feels much lighter in the hand compared to all phones I have tried/used for the last 2 years. However, if you are okay with a heavy phone and 20:10 ratio I would buy something else (like a Redmi K30). MIUI is better than Flyme and the camera is probably way better on K30 .
It is currently for € 330, do you recommend it to a friend who does not know about smartphones but keeps them for a long time? (Currently he has a mi5!) I see that it already has Android 10.

Would not recommend this phone to a beginner due to some problems with google service compatibility. The stock rom on this phone have android 9 (not 10).
I am still using this phone as my daily driver. I have bought and sold a lot of different phones lately second hand (Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Huawei P30, Redmi Note 9S etc). However, I have not yet find a better phone than 16T. All other phones I have tried lately feel much worse in the hand (too heavy) and have to narrow screens. IMO if this phone had a global firmware and a better camera it would be the perfect phablet.
Hello. I was considering buying this as my daily phone. Problem for me is the rom, as I am not too fond of the flyme os. Have anyone of you tried this custom rom (GSI)
Lineage 17
https://gearallnews.com/how-to-install-lineage-os-17-gsi-for-meizu-16t-android-10/
Lineage 17.1
https://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/lineageos-17-1-meizu-16t/
AOSP Android 10
https://www.getdroidtips.com/android-10-meizu-16t/
From what I understand (GSI - Generic System Image) is like an all-in-one rom (correct me if I’m wrong) that works with Android 9 that supports Project Treble.
Seeing this is a relatively new device, i think there is no post here on xda on custom roms for this device. Have anyone of you tried this method? As I do not have a way to test/confirm its validity (No actual unit yet). If you want to try it just remember to try it at your own risk.
Also I don’t know if it’s a fake site or whatnot so beware.
I have this phone and flashed Mokee as they already have a stable release. I just mustered the courage to follow the youtube vid here.
What I liked about Mokee is that it has built in call recording just like in the stock rom (flyme). It also boots quick (less than half a minute) just like the stock rom.
However the full functionality of the camera doesn't work unless you download GCam (tried many versions until one works with 4K60 video in hevc encoding).
Also the onscreen fingerprint scanner is a little iffy and sometimes would lock up the screen if it doesn't work for some unknown reason.

Real world views on the HD1900 7T available 'on the cheap'

I have a genuine question (no, I'm not the amazon seller in camouflage ) about buying a HD1900 variant Oneplus 7T
FWI This is the Chinese version of the phone, probably sold/ sourced in HK and imported.
For me in the UK it's available at a stonking discount here
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oneplus-Unlocked-Smartphone-HD1900-Inches/dp/B07ZKDPSVN/
400 GBP
My simple question is: Surely somebody else on the XDA has bought such a device? Can you report if there are any obvious problems or gotchas?
Things like:
- Which ROM is installed & is it a EURO one with the Google Play Store fully installed
- Both SIM card slots work on 4G UK networks
- It can be rooted and unlocked as normal
- I suppose mainly , once an International ROM is installed it is in every way the same as a regular European version phone (well except that the warranty would come only from the amazon seller, and means they have to stay in business!)
Anybody?
(NB: I saw the post on the person who bought a French version of this phone, but nothing for the UK variant?)
I have the Chinese HD1900 variant. It comes with Hydrogen OS but you can install Oxygen OS international very easily.
Supported 4G-LTE bands:
FDD-LTE:B1,2,3,4,5,7,8,12,13,17,18,19,20,26,28,29
TDD-LTE:B34,38,39,40,41
3G/2G:
TDSCDMA:B34,B39
UMTS(WCDMA):B1,2,4,5,8,9,19
CDMA:BC0,BC1
GSM:B2,3,5,8
^^Volte works?
VoLTE works fine on HD1900 here in the States.
It won't come with a UK 3 pin charger and I guess you won't be covered by any manufacturer warranty

It kinda sucks. Lags a bit. Cannot root. Compared to my ancient Oneplus One, the HD1900 is slightly better but not a huge improvement.

??? This phone can be rooted and it works pretty well. Learn how to do it without TWRP it's not that difficult. I still have my Onplus One and comparison it is just a no brainer, don't say BS. Even this morning I took photos with both phones in same situation to compare, the OnePlus 7T is really better. I'm feeling I'm trying to answer to a troll here?!

You're probably right, I took the bait...
I ordered 2 of these (HD1900 256Gb model) from Ali Express when they had their sale on 11.11. I was lucky as despite the number they sold they shipped it within 8 days and 9 days later I received it in the UK (17 days from order, from China so not bad). Some recent orders have been taking longer I heard, so it's a bit of pot luck really.
The phones are great. The seller open the box and flash Oxygen OS (Global Version) on the phone prior to shipping it as it originally comes with Hydrogen OS being for the Chinese market. Comes with the chinese plug and a UK adapter, or other if different country. I did a factory reset before setting up the phone. If you want to convert it to EU, then just use Oxygen Updater from Play Store and flash the appropriate ROM. Very simple to do.
I'm guessing the one you are looking at on Amazon is not any different, but you'll at least get the Amazon cover if anything goes wrong. Warranty of course will be with China so forget about it. I have got phone insurance so I just rely on that.
Ordered my HD1900 256GB silver on eBay for £369 (with 5% eBay discount)
Took a while to come but I couldn't be any happier. I also had the 7t pro McLaren edition but I favoured this flat screen and sold the McLaren edition.
Love this phone its so sleek, fast, a good all round phone. Ive had no problems at all.
It came sealed with oxygen os installed already with an update out the box on mine so I was very surprised.
