Meizu 16T (SD855, 6.5″ SAMOLED, 4500mAh) - information, reviews and discussion - Device Reviews and Information

Bought a Meizu 16T during black friday day for $282 at Meizu Online Store on Aliexpress. The phone arrived today.
First impression:
+ It feels really light and comfortable in the hand (183g), Its made of plastic which I prefer over glass.
+ As usual on phones from Meizu the build quality is great.
+ Nice notchless design. Got the purple version which I like a lot.
+ The screen is big and vibrant. I really like the 18.6 aspect ratio. Wider than most other phones which is great when reading. Hate super-tall phones.
+ Most phones from meizu are a bit laggy (due to poor software optimization) but this phone feels really fast.
- No global firmware yet which is a big problem. I am on Flyme 8.0.0.0A. It was easy to install google services and play store but several apps do not work (Netflix, HBO etc).
Does anyone else have this phone?

To my knowledge, there is no custom rom support yet. However, the phone has just been released so there is a good chance that their will be some custom roms in the future.
BTW, several different gcam mods work out of the box on 16T. I played around with a couple of different mods yesterday. However, almost all of them suffer from some problems like low color saturation. The stock camera seems to be decent but a custom made gcam mod for 16T would be fantastic.

What are the things on the glass? Bubbles? Cracks?

No, it was probably some smudges on the screen when I took the photo (alternatively just reflections). The screen is in perfect condition.

I just found a working version of Netflix for 16T:
https://consumer.huawei.com/en/comm...s-Apps]Working-Netflix-Version/topicId_38359/

A experimental version of MoKee Rom for 16T is now available.
https://reameizu.com/how-to-flash-m...0KUb_OZP2giyMCWQlkElkGBTbI_sU7D_4K9tUl3IIPaoI
However, I will wait until a more stable version is released before I go through the hassle of trying to install this in on my phone.

Thx for posting this. Very intriguing phone. Really the only issue is software. Well, also the mediocre camera. Anyway it's price : performance ratio is unrivaled so it should be popular with a lot of techies. Custom roms should follow suit. And hopefully a custom gcam also. I might take a chance on this thing.
In Flyme, do you get full English menus when the system language is set to English? Some reviews on Aliexpress seem to indicate it's a mix of both Chinese and English. But I'm guessing they must be referring to Meizu specific apps.

Yes, the menu is fully in English except for the "Flyme labratory" sub menu (which is not important anyway). I have been using 16T now 3 months. I like it as much now as I did when I wrote my first impressions review. The most important advantage for me is the width of the screen. The with of 16T is 78mm compared to 74-76 mm which is the width used for most other "large" phones. It really makes a difference, you get a much better viewing experience compared to these super tall phones which are fashionable nowadays. Another advantage is the lightness, it feels much lighter in the hand compared to all phones I have tried/used for the last 2 years. However, if you are okay with a heavy phone and 20:10 ratio I would buy something else (like a Redmi K30). MIUI is better than Flyme and the camera is probably way better on K30 .

It is currently for € 330, do you recommend it to a friend who does not know about smartphones but keeps them for a long time? (Currently he has a mi5!) I see that it already has Android 10.

Would not recommend this phone to a beginner due to some problems with google service compatibility. The stock rom on this phone have android 9 (not 10).
I am still using this phone as my daily driver. I have bought and sold a lot of different phones lately second hand (Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Huawei P30, Redmi Note 9S etc). However, I have not yet find a better phone than 16T. All other phones I have tried lately feel much worse in the hand (too heavy) and have to narrow screens. IMO if this phone had a global firmware and a better camera it would be the perfect phablet.

Hello. I was considering buying this as my daily phone. Problem for me is the rom, as I am not too fond of the flyme os. Have anyone of you tried this custom rom (GSI)
Lineage 17
https://gearallnews.com/how-to-install-lineage-os-17-gsi-for-meizu-16t-android-10/
Lineage 17.1
https://www.cyanogenmods.org/forums/topic/lineageos-17-1-meizu-16t/
AOSP Android 10
https://www.getdroidtips.com/android-10-meizu-16t/
From what I understand (GSI - Generic System Image) is like an all-in-one rom (correct me if I’m wrong) that works with Android 9 that supports Project Treble.
Seeing this is a relatively new device, i think there is no post here on xda on custom roms for this device. Have anyone of you tried this method? As I do not have a way to test/confirm its validity (No actual unit yet). If you want to try it just remember to try it at your own risk.
Also I don’t know if it’s a fake site or whatnot so beware.

I have this phone and flashed Mokee as they already have a stable release. I just mustered the courage to follow the youtube vid here.
What I liked about Mokee is that it has built in call recording just like in the stock rom (flyme). It also boots quick (less than half a minute) just like the stock rom.
However the full functionality of the camera doesn't work unless you download GCam (tried many versions until one works with 4K60 video in hevc encoding).
Also the onscreen fingerprint scanner is a little iffy and sometimes would lock up the screen if it doesn't work for some unknown reason.

Sony Xperia M5 And C5 Ultra Leak

Looks like the most reliable leak about the upgrade to Zultra with a very very thin bezel.
By the looks of it, it may be available pretty soon as well..
The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra has a huge 6-inch 1080p screen and a virtually non-existent side frame. This is just 0.8mm thin, this compares to a 2.2mm thin side frame in the Xperia C4 and 2.5mm thin frame in the Xperia T2 Ultra. These small bezels mean that that the Xperia C5 Ultra is barely much bigger than the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.
I dont know much about the processor but sounds disappointing - http://www.mediatek.com/en/products/mobile-communications/smartphone1/mt6752/
( Just opened a new thread since all the other news in the past were just speculations )
The XperiaC5 Ultra will probably get more attention than the M5. It's a big 6-inch phone with a 1080p LCD. The bezel on the left and right of the screen is just 0.8mm wide, which looks neat. Unfortunately, that's the most interesting thing about the design. It's otherwise a very typical Sony device. Inside you get 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an octa-core MediaTek MT6752 chipset. It'll cost the equivalent of $350.

See ya Sony... Hello P8Max
I really hope that Sony DOESN'T label the C5 Ultra as a "successor" since it is a downgrade CPU wise while offering the same amount of RAM and storage as the existing model. As a lowend phablet, it is quite decent, though.
The Huawei P8 Max is interesting but the lack of developer support (root, ROM) hold me back. Buying a device with a modified 5.0.2 without any reported updates to 5.1.x and 5.2/M sounds like a bad idea even if it is a nice device in other aspects.
I have not tried the P8 Max but the P8 feels great from a quality standpoint. If Huawei would cooperate with XDA like Sony does, it would be a really great option.
Edit: I hope Sony will introduce a Z5 Tablet Compact with a Snapdragon 820. If they are unwilling to give us a new Ultra, then a Z5 TC would be great.
Hope Z5 Ultra had the same design
Sent from my C6833 using XDA Free mobile app
They are official now, if only C5 Ultra had better specs...
M5 looks good
I'm liking the M5, looks like it's a Z3+ without the firedragon in it. Probably what the Z3+ should have been.
I've shifted my size wants with regard to phones, went 3.7", 4.3", 4.6", 5.2", 5.5", 5.6", 5.2" and now I want a 5", just like M5
Apart from the Mediatek chip, the M5 ticks all the boxes. And given I don't game on phone the weaker GPU in the X10 isn't a factor. It seems far more efficient than the SD810.
I'd say Sony have canned the Z3+ production and tweaked slightly to make the M5.
I guess this means the Z5 will have an SD820 in it and possibly a 5.5" screen?
Sounds interesting, but disappointed with the M5 processor (mediatek's, right?)
Mediatek ain't a bad chip, I've had a MX4 and I rather liked it.
Sent from a mobile gadget.
I dont it matters as long we have a lag free device.
Dont know if sony will be proactive with bootloader unlock and may be a playstore version

I just came from Russia (vacation) and found the M5 Aqua... Why didn't I buy it in Russia where it already got released :/. * waiting for release in Germany *
But sounds great. 2.0 GHz Processor, nice Camera and stuff. But what custom ROMs/kernels possibilities does this phone have?

At most a kernel like Tangerine thats all.
No CustomROM, modded Stock ROMs possible, root possible.
And yea, that's the end, really boring phone cos MediaTek has no opensource for External and Hardware

Maybe the team behind the stock firmware in Sony give us a hand in this case.
They know what are they facing if they changed the processor.
Havent read if its going to have the clean AOSP with sony apps (this would be the best scenario for us)
No unlocked bootloader, no availability in the US and western countries (i.e. no dev)
Why are we still having a dedicated forum on xda??

MTK devices have not really received a proper way to unlock, but there are ways i guess.
M5 is really too expensive and not worth on my carrier, it's selling at $418 SGD on a Combo 2 Student Plan $38 per mo. I could top up $100 more and get a Z series phone so what's the point of getting this phone.
Other carriers offer at $200+ for the device on a $42 per mo plan and Z series cost about $400-$500. Guess i won't be getting M5, no open source code is even more a minus
No MTK Source = no custom ROM.
I think Sony is obligated under the GPL to release the sources?
Anyway, in a month or so the picture will be clear. I strolled across the M4 forums, and there's zero to none original development there. Hope M5 will have a better fate.

Will Asus Zenfone 5z ever receive good community support?

I am actually thinking of buying this device. Now I have noticed that even after such a long time from it's release, this device still doesn't has any official Twrp recovery and basically overall the community support for custom ROMs and Kernels is close to nothing. Now I have flashed a lot of Roms and Kernels in my current device can I expect the same from this device?!
Please express your thoughts, your inputs would help me. Final question : should I buy it if want the above things for zenfone 5z as my future device?

You are quite correct on that account, I am myself waiting for the same.
I share similar sentiments and would love some custom support; that being said, we do have a couple of developers for the device in question.
As far as i know, one of them is yet to get his hands on the device and the other one is busy with his life. It is unclear at the moment as to when can we expect things to catch some pace.
On the other front, I would recommend this device wholeheartedly against the likes of OnePlus 6 and Pocophone F1 (the famous competitors), quite simply because it IS better than those 2 in terms of raw performance and overall usability.
OnePlus does excel in terms of software support (it being close to stock android) and the added touch of water resistance however, that's all there is to it. I personally like the little compact dimensions and the super LCD screen (tbh not a fan of AMOLED screens personally) of the 5Z better. Pocophone F1 on the other hand is a total no-go as the built quality and overall device is way off from the 5Z; however, in terms of the specs provided for the price it asks for is quite impressive and would be the best choice if you are on a tight budget.
There is really no "wrong" choice here, it just boils down to what you personally prefer the most.
For me 5Z >= OP6 >> Pocophone F1. Cheers.

I agree with you even I like the Asus more than the oneplus 6 and Poco F1, however as stated before before I buy a device I first take a look at its community support and in this case, well we know....
I'll wait, maybe a few more weeks perhaps, when I finally see something then I may buy it, otherwise I will have to forcefully change my choice. :crying:
I wish the overall community to be a little more responsive here, I mean it's been a while since this device has been released. Poco F1 for instance already has proper guides and Rom. It's high time.

Asus has already released an official statement stating Pie would arrive on 5Z by the end of January 2019.
Yes asking for this ETA is justified as it's a company policy to give timely updates, asking for ETA to custom devs for their ROMs is however rude.
Pie is up, are there any test build or development started for our device?

Me too, I'm thinking to upgrade (or downgrade, if the word fits) my s8(exynos) to mi9se. All other new phones are too big, and quite too expensive.(Even the S10e)
My main problem with s8 is battery life and lack of developers. Will it be any better if I switch to mi9se?

Newer phone = Newer battery,

If gaming performance is not that important to you, trust me, you won't miss that much. Screen is basically the same, both phones are snappy but navigation is a bit different though especially the gestures (I love the One UI gestures, it's more convenient having the recent, home and back button in the same place down the screen rather than swiping the left and right on the edge of the screen). I bought the 9 SE as a secondary phone to my Galaxy S9+ because my S9+ rear camera and fingerprint module has already failed just right after the 1 year warranty period expired (just my pure luck). Having it fix here in my country cost way too much money so I just decided to get a phone with a decent camera instead until I can renew my contract from carrier next year.

Well, Pixel phones are not officially supported or even sold in my country. I can get it in the grey market but I won't make such gamble especially if I'm spending $300 and above, warranty is important too if I will be investing that much.
Since I had my mi9se, I'll write some things that aren't noticeable without it:
1. the camera bump is really tall. 1.55mm isn't something like unnoticeable. also, its edges are sharp, so it's not a good design.
2. it's noticeably heaver than s8. my s8 without case&screen protection weighs 150g(using with really thin TPU case: 10g), and mi9se with glass screen protector but without case weighs 165g. BTW, stock TPU case is 16g, and it's not even fully covering the camera bump.
3. Fingerprint in display is cool, but not as fast as traditional ones. Though, it's not that slower compared with my unrooted S8.(using havoc ROM)
4. Proper GCam mod won't be avalable very soon, because of a bug made by xiaomi. It's snapdragon, so HDR+ process is way faster than S8, but because of that bug, pictures have a yellowish tone.
5. Custom ROM development isn't very popular for a Xiaomi device.
6. No waterproofing, and durability is unknown. If you are wondering what I'm saying, go search "jerryrigeverything" at youtube, and watch his video about xiaomi/redmi.
Now for the good part:
1. The display is very bright. Brighter than S8.
2. Having a wide angle lens is nice. Really, it's nice.
3. There definitively are developers, and we've got proper ROM(Havoc, came just in a few days ago)! yes, non-MiUI, non-GSI, proper custom ROM!
All in all, not a perfect device, but great bang for the buck.
BTW, mi cc9e is coming with a bigger battery, but I suspect it's gonna be really heavy.
In my Opinion the main reason to get a 9SE instead of a S8 is the price. So if you have to look at your money take the 9SE.
In a week the MI A3 should be purchaseable, this phone could be a choice as well. Not sure if a MI A3 Lite is gonna be released as well.

8GB/128GB China ROM

Had my Note 8 Pro for 3 weeks now, previous phone was the Mi A2 Lite (SD625 3/32), android one was fun, but lacks certain features I wanted (also had a problem with screen flickering too), so switching to the Note 8 Pro was a huge leap. I didn't had much time experiencing MIUI 10 (again, previous phone was a stock android); immediately updated mine to MIUI 11 as soon as I connected to the internet; should've tried out the v10 first to have a solid comparison.

Again, it's a 8GB/128GB China ROM so here's what I've got so far:
Even though I haven't tested out the other MIUI phones, other than a Redmi 5A(which is a very solid entry-level phone) I can compare it's performance based on reliable YouTube reviewers (if some of you even believe them) these reviewers are GSMArena, TechZG, TechUtopia, C4ETech, Technology Jock, NickBrazer, Tech for Luddites, and some of my local (Philippines) tech reviewers; Sulit Tech Reviews, Yugatech, Unbox Diaries, and Techbeans.
From there, some of there review units are 6/64GB Global, so I have, somehow, a bit of information as to how the 6/64GB Global performs, also, based on the Antutu Score (which is not that 'reliable', I dare say) the 6/64 is far better than my 8/128 CN. First result had me on 289k compared to the 290k of the 6/64, then later attempts, only gave 283k
Also since this is a China Version, there's no Google Pay, third-party Launchers can't be used, maybe because of theme resources error, idk, but Poco Launcher compensates for that, I also tried side-loading the chinese version basic apps (GetApps, Themes, Browser, etc) I only succeeded with changing the Browser; the GetApps Global version is a totally different app from the Chinese variant, the Themes app cannot be "updated" to the Global because the Global's latest version number is lower than my Themes Apps' bare version, so there's that.
But comparison aside, I can really feel the perks of having 8GB RAM. The G90T is powerful, no kidding.
Also, if anyone have any questions or want me to try something with the Chinese Variant, feel free to ask below.
I just bought mine on Ali with global rom. Did you put a TWRP and root your phone already? Is there any specific way to do so or just like global ones, no differences?

You can install Playstore and gOOgle services with inbuilt Chinese market... I've been installed it and use b4 flashed global firmware... Btw, phone is awesome... Fast & stable, only thing that is missing are custom roms 4 it...

I did install the Google Play Services, works well, but not to full extent; "Ok google" doesn't work, which is a feature I can live without, but what bothers me is that my location history can't be recorded.

General Xiaomi 11 Ultra, holycrap, OnePlus why so much fail?

After seeing Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, I'm floored by how much OnePlus has descended into disappointment with the 9 series. I'm thinking of returning my 9 for Ultra, seen what Xiaomi is offering for the same price of a Pro, is just incredible. Hell I'm questioning why I'm continuing to support OnePlus when I see how much Samsung is valuing the mid-tier and how much Oppo and Xiaomi are stepping up with their flagships. OnePlus seems to being completely lazy and disappointing in both price categories.
IRONICALLY THE Xiomi 11 Ultra photos look more natural color and definitely has more detail.
Wide, OP9 has slightest edge
Telefoto? 11 absolute OP9 destruction, annihilated.
Selfie? Best camera (11 has rear screen to use rear camera) vs the worst selfie camera? I mean really, I think OP9/Pro have the worst front camera among all their competitors.
Night photos? Xiaomi win again
Screen? Seems to be best right now with 1700 nit brightness Dolby VIsion support. The 9 Pro screen is gimmick.
Better materials. Gorilla Glass Victus, Ceramic etc.
So far Xiaomi 11 doesn't overheat taking photos.
OnePlus seems they think they are on easy street and don't have to try any more. Even though Samsung is constantly innovating, OnePlus isn't even doing the minimum right. Man I want the OnePlus from the 3T and 6T series back again.
They clearly can't play with the big boys in the flagship game. Just give it up and do better in the mid tier, cause it seems they are failing there too. Just unnecessarily gimping their mid tier to boost their flagship which really isn't flagship, it's really mid-tier with flagship price. 8 Pro seemed to me the same thing, mid-tier phone with overhyped flagship price.
Totally agree with you. Mi 11 ultra is better option than 9 pro

Definitely disagree here based on reading online, but since I can't hold the phone to confirm, I will never truly know. I think both are great phones though. Not a fan of the Mi 11 OS either.
Been using mi 10 ultra for 6 months (just switched to 9pro few days). I can confirm mi 10 ultra took better photos than onepus 9 pro, so I believed mi 11 ultra can also do a better job. The only reason I don't want to buy mi 11 ultra cause of shape, IT SO ****ING BIG. Hope oneplus may improve after some updates, if not, i'll return to xiaomi

9 Pro will have better dev support which is a must for the hot chip (SD888). And according to reviews. 9 Pro takes better pictures. 11 Ultra gets hot fast especially in the huge camera bump area then drops brightness forcefully to 50%. China software is bloated, MIUI is catroon-ish and iOS copycat. Secondary display is a useless gimmick. 9 pro takes better pictures from main sensor and ultra wide (imx766) is better that the older imx5xx in the 11 ultra. 11 ultra is only better in telephoto but Samsung S21 Ultra is even better (10X vs 5X) 11 Ultra is just overrated, overhyped and overpriced phone and it's a downgrade from the Mi 10 Ultra (slower charging, worse telephoto and overheating). 9 Pro also has a better and more advanced LPTO panel. Picture quality from the overhyped and oversized Samsung GN2 sensor are disappointing (Samsung are known to oversize things like exynos chips for example). Samsung sensor isn't a match for Sony sensors and bigger sensor doesn't necessarily mean better picture quality. I might get an 11 Ultra if it gets AOSP or lineage os and a good custom kernel but that probably never going to happen.
How many topics will there be about O+ becoming bad Vs Samsung Vs Xiaomi etcetc.
We are on a dedicated subchannel that deals with O+ devices, and especially 9 Pro here.
Isn't it possible to concentrate every posts about this on a dedicated posts where guys can trash on it without creating so many new topic ?? How many of users here already created topic about that subject
I'm just attacking anyone here, but a new O+ user, I'm just fed up with those comparisons. I never would have the idea to go in another brand subtopics and creating a post just to criticize ...
Mi11 ultra is about the numbers. Sounds Good, but in real life... Not so much.
The price is Huge! The phone is heavy. The camera is not the best. 120x zoom is BS.
It does Not charge faster than OnePlus 9 Pro (kind of the best in charging. Wired & wireless).
Mi11 gets hot. The updates are alot slower than Op. You get open beta once a month in Xiaomi? And Stable rom once at two monts.
Other Horrible thing about Xiaomi. One price for China (Good price) and for Europa/America the price Grows Big. I mean Big!
And about how bad is the camera on OnePlus. You can find youtube videos with comparision. I watch one with Op 9pro - S21 Ultra - Iphone 12 max. Op got 8 points, s21 9 points, iphone 9 points. How is that Soo Bad ?!?
The Haselblad partnership just began & is just software for now.
Maybe Op 10 will have Haselblad lens.
Oxygen OS is known to be one of the clean-best Android os.
