Question Where the Z Fold needs to evolve to for achieving a perfect 16:9 screen aspect ratio on both screens - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

The next huge step forward is to create a tri fold screen. Obviously major improvements to reducing the weight and even more so the width of each fold needs to improve greatly. Also the hinge needs to be much less cumbersome so as to fold flat/flush. To achieve the same width and weight of the current Fold you would have to reduce the weight and width by 33% in producing the Tri fold. It's a significant improvement, but definitely feasible.
Folded Screen
5.33 x 3.0 = 6.1 inch diagonal (16 x 9 aspect ratio)
Unfolded Screen
5.33 x 9.5 = 10.9 inch diagonal (16 x 9 aspect ratio)
Note: the third fold would face outward and serve as the outer screen. So you actually don't have a separate screen. This would keep the costs down significantly.
The biggest challenge would be how to protect the edge of the screen where the second fold occurs. It would be exposed. Creating a case for this phone would also present a huge challenge.

I genuinely have no interest in a phone with a display that's over 9" diagonally. I'm sure most people feel the same way. The current display size is great. Even when unfolded, it's pretty easy to hold the Fold3 with one hand in portrait orientation. Anything larger would be unreasonably cumbersome.

You make a valid point.
I would personally love it.
I just have a issue with such awkward aspect ratios on both the front and unfolded screens. If you make the front screen a more typical form factor, then the unfolded screen almost becomes a perfect square, which is much more undesirable than as it currently stands.

I have no problem with a larger screen, but the weight needs to go down significantly.

I'm not quite sure why this is not understood to be the goal anyway. Samsung's own videos show this tri-fold phone, so it's obvious that they are trying to go there.
The name itself, the 'Z' fold is a massive giveaway too.

Please no more 16:9 screens! That aspect needs to die now!

That's true ...
Currently, we have a V fold with additional front display, and who knows, maybe we'll get a W fold one day with an additional front display

In preference to what?

Fine with inner display size. Outside screen though is too narrow.

I feel like what keeps the Fold (and other phones) from being very thin are the batteries. If they can get the batteries to be thinner, then a lot of possibilities are there to make phones whatever they want, multiple folds, etc.

Truth be told if you have two hinges nothing prevents you from only unfolding one side when you don't need a larger size/don't wanna hold a tablet, and then expanding the other fold when you can enjoy it. The Z fold was the first thing that came to my mind when thinking of foldables.

Why as most media created are natively 16:9 aspect ratio? Personally I miss the old 16:9 screens.

I much prefer a proper 16:10 screen for work purposes. 16:9 has always been for TVs.

The outside screen fold would be too vulnerable. With all the excuses Samsung uses to avoid a warranty screen replacement, it would be a nightmare. I love the idea, but I don't think it's practical until Samsung's screens are more durable.

But most media created these days are in the 16:9 format ratio, that is why I prefer that the inner screen be 16:9 so that the media I view on the inner screen will fill up the entire screen.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Too Big For the Human Hand?

http://mobile.pcmag.com/device2/art.../www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397742,00.asp
Thoughts?
"it's dangerously close to a tablet"
Hardly. It's not even that much bigger than my GFs MT4G and about the same size as my GalaxyS2.
I dunno. I have small hands anyway. The Nexus One seemed a good fit. The jump to get G2x had me a little off... but I got used to it.
Now I juggle the phone on my fingers and palm. Kinda weird but works well. The Nexus pushes my thumb reach even using it this way. Anything bigger and I'll be double fisting it.
Since I have smaller hands, I conformed earlier. I think people with larger hands are having to go through that now with the nexus.
I wouldn't say its too big, but will probably change up a few things.
LTE Google Galaxy Nexus! - Stock
Asus Transformer - OC/UV
Hardly. Its a big phone but still not that much larger then my old Thunderbolt. Maybe he should play with the Note for a little bit to get an idea of a phone flirting with tablet territory.
4" does seem to be the ideal one handed phone for everybody. the atrix still feels good in my hand. i do have a hard time one handed sometimes but actually my bigger problem is the next phone. will i settle for something smaller after such a nice screen. probably not. i do like what samsung did to the hd screen. it looks a looooot better than the plus screens. up until now, amoled has been oversaturated with the colors. this screen is great. and still has the nice contrast and pop because of the deep black.
Yes. I think it's a bit too big. The rezound fits my hand better.
But that's the price you pay for freedom.

I'm 6" with pretty big hands, and i can hit the Q in portrait mode with the middle of my thumb. (right handed) So for people with smaller hands, they should still have no problem reaching any of the letters in portrait mode.
I think its the perfect size overall. The device itself is only a tad longer than a Bionic, (about a half a mm or a mm) the same width, and thinner. I really don't see what anyone is complaining about.
Due to the rounded corners it's a hell of a lot easier to use with one hand than my RAZR.

It is a damn big phone; that was my primary concern about. Having no problems using it though.
it depends on the person's size. i'm 6' 5" and have big hands. this Nexus' still feels like it's a bit too small for me. i look forward to the 5"+ phones.
For me the SGS2 felt bigger. I can reach stuff much easier on the GN

I think that the nexus is ok for people with above average sized hands, but really, if your hands are too small for the GNEX, then they are too small for most of the 4.3" devices out there right now anyways:
Here is a comparison between the GNEX and the DroidX (4.3"). There really isnt that much of a difference.

Here are the two phones in my hand how one might hold them. There is again minimal difference. Basically, this says that if you can use a 4.3" phone, which has become the defacto size for android super phones, then you can just as easily use the GNEX's huge 4.65" display.
The GNEX:
and the DX:
(Note that I am 6' 3" and the diagonal of my hand is about 9.5", so the usability will be better or worse depending on how big you are.)
Edited: I hate Box.com. And I wont every try to venture away from the comfort of Dropbox again for cloud storage.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S. I do think that was the perfect size for my hands. Although i still couldnt stand the hardware buttons on that phone and the gsm nexus doesnt feel any heavier and seems thinner. But after you get use to the gnexus screen the gs seems so little. Even my wife's iphone 4 seems tiny now.

No problems using it, but would you prefer it to be smaller? Or do you like this size better now that you're used to it?
Seems a fine size to me.
I have rather large hands (glove size 8.5) and my opinion is: the GN is on the far end of "large". This is probably the maximum size a smartphone can have and still be (relatively) easily operated with one hand. For smaller hands it already is too large.
Galaxy Nexus is just under the "to-big-for-human-hans-limit" if you ask me.
The Galaxy Note on the other hand, is to big.
i don't have an issue with the size using it, i have an issue with the size of it + a holster and just putting it into and taking it out of said holster. I liked the nexus one (OGdroid before that, and a myriad of smaller phones before that) i was coming from but was ready for something a little bigger. a little smaller would have been nice since i keep it on my belt, but i like the big screen when i'm using it.
i got the leather case from vzw, but i'll be heading out tomorrow to try to find a nylon one that hopefully will fit the phone but be a smaller total package.

So most likely a dual speakers configuration again but with the bottom speaker facing down. My only concerns about this setup is when holding the device in landscape mode, wouldn't the bottom speaker be a bit muted by the palm of your hand?...

Shouldn't be too bad, you'd have to cup your hand pretty tightly around that speaker to really hurt the sound.
As time goes on, I'm getting increasingly excited about not having on-screen softkeys, or the option to disable them

I much prefer capacity button too, like on the m7. On screen button are wasting screen space, gives you the false illusion that the phone size/screen size ratio is better.

Buttons would be on either side of fingerprint scanning (an area which was formerly all bezel or speaker); screen is actually slightly larger than M9.

What is the giant bottom bezel for?

What is the function of the bottom bezel if navigation buttons are on screen? obviously Google would have made the screen bigger or phone smaller if the bezel was just blank space... so what is its function then?

Wish they would have went with the rear of the HTC 10.
Or just a phone with very rounded corners. Possible they just like the style. Antennae array is in the back under the glass I heard so that seems different then the other HTC phones. The camera is at the top but in the corner also.
Waiting for a device break down and we will see how close it is. I do not really care for the large Bezels either but I suppose they have a reason.

I agree, I'm currently using a 2014 Nexus 6 and the thin bottom bezel makes it so I have to reach too far downward to press the on screen nav buttons, which makes for very uncomfortable use
Judging by hands on reviews of these Pixel phones, it looks like the big bottom bezel keeps the users thumbs in alignment with the nav buttons, which probably leads to more comfortable use, especially when using the phone in one hand.
I agree they could of done more with the bottom bezel, like add a speaker or something. Hopefully they at least made good use of that space internally

You are right, they do look similar in some ways. Judging by the comparisons picture that I added to this post, the bezels are thinner on all sides of the Pixel phones when compared to the A9. The sensor window is the same shape but seems to be a little bigger on the Pixel.
The backside of the Pixel is obviously different and if you turn the Pixel sideways, the Pixel starts out thin on the bottom and becomes thicker at the top, which the A9 doesn't.
So there are some differences and if they did start out with a A9 template then Google modified it to their own liking.

Comparison videos are what I really want to see. MKBHD is a little too focused on the camera on any phone, while Flossy actually buys the devices he reviews, and always compares them to whatever else he has.
If you haven't seen his stuff, you should watch his Real Reviews, which are like 45 minutes to an hour...and hilarious. Plus, he's a huge black dude from New York.

You know you could buy the device yourself and have 30 days to return it for a full refund right? Why let others influence your decision... the phone isn't going to be bad by any means, so there is nothing to worry about there.

General Returning P6P entirely due to curved screen, swapping to P6

ATTN: if you (somehow) like or merely don't mind the curved screen, good for you. This is information for others considering the Pixel 6 Pro who might have the same dissatisfaction as I. Also note that none of my concerns are about the much more commonly discussed screen protector / case / swiping differences. I use my phones naked.
after owning many Nexus and Pixel phones, this was my first phone with a curved edge display:
-I was immediately put off by the full length shadow on the edge on all light backgrounds, and the full length highlight on all dark backgrounds (under glass issues). Envision a distinct grey bar interrupting the otherwise pristine even background.
-It also results in a secondary surface to catch glare/reflections from direct light sources (on glass issue). That is, even if you hold your phone to avoid glare across the main part of the screen, you may still catch glare on the edge. You now have 2 surfaces to catch light vs 1.
-I also dislike the geometry distortion and warping effect it has on content at the edge. It's not how the content is meant to be perceived. It makes it 'pop' in an eye catching (you don't want your eye caught there) way. Some text and images look like it's rolling off the edge. Ugly.
-Lastly, on my previous phone with a flat edge I was already, in some apps (**** youtube), experiencing regular mis-taps with palm or finger flesh unintentionally causing unwanted behaviours just from holding the device, or picking up/putting down. I expect that to be markedly worse on this phone.
All said, I'm returning it and getting the Pixel 6. The color and geometry distortion is too ugly, distracting, and IMO ruins the image. I would rather give up the handful of advantages of the Pro just so that the core experience (looking at the screen) is much improved.
A real shame. Hope they never use one again.
It was the biggest reason for getting the P6, I would have dealt with the bigger size if the screen was flat.
Screen protector takes 2 seconds and is cheap compared to curved (I have the s20 as well, I know the struggle). I also like not getting accidental touches like you do on curved panels.
Pictures aren't the same as holding and using the phone. That amazed me a bit at first.
My gripe are rounded corner displays... I loathe them.

I'd say that's a fair perspective, and I agree with the points made. I'm sticking with P6P however, since the optical distortions are less important than the additional width for making the screen keyboard effective for typing, and the limited ability to physically hold the device because of the rounded corners is corrected by my case (I always use a robust case on a phone, saved me MANY times).
This is the first curved screen i have owned and i have actively gone out of my way in the past to avoid them as i see no benefits whatsoever to them. However on the P6P the cons are totally offset but the zoom range, my wifes Pixel 6 is crap even at 4 or 5X where as the P6P is fine at 10x and beyond.

I hear you on that. Took my kid up north on the weekend and had a flock of wild turkeys hanging around in the front yard at about 50 yards. Started zooming in to get a good shot, crap crap crap and BOOM, it switched to the zoom sensor and got a beautiful shot of them.
Gestures are so much nicer on curved displays though so i can put up with it for a nicer feeling user experience
follow-up: satisfaction was instant with Pixel 6. Very happy I switched.
I was originally annoyed by the curved screen, but then I saw a couple of videos on this case. It looked promising after I saw some videos.

I ended up ordering it, and the level of protection and coverage on the sides was actually more than I thought it would be, it actually covers up the curves to a point where it doesn't get in the way of texting or anything. It's a thick feeling case, very grippy and actually looks good on the phone. The only sore spot I have with this case is the logo on the bottom left corner, but it's no big deal.
Here's some images of the case, in case anyone is interested.

The case needs to be higher than the display on the sides to protect it and stop accidental touches/drops*. The only real issue I find with a curved screen is cut/pasting near the curve. Of course you can flip over to landscape or use other maneuvers to grab it. Otherwise it becomes a seamless experience.
I never liked the display edge of any display
*curved displays near no bezel phones tend to be slippery fish with no case. They will turn into flying fish eventually unless you case em.

I've always had good cases on my last four curved screen devices! Works a treat! Cheers

General Just How Awesome Is This Thing? (First Impressions)

I've been modding phones since the OG Razr days, and even though I don't do a whole lot anymore, I still consider phones a hobby. I was going to wait for the Fold5 or the Google Fold, but after doing a buttload of research (my normal M.O.), I decided that the Fold4 was ready for prime time. Throw in the fantastic trade-in deals and it was hard to say, no. As I told my wife, I haven't been this excited about a phone in a long time. I have to say, I'm impressed. Haven't had it quite twenty-four hours yet, but it's blowing me away. Obviously, the Samsung screens look beautiful. Sure, the outer screen is narrow, but not unusable. Especially if you swipe type. The inner screen? Well, that's what it's all about, isn't it? It's gorgeous, I love all the real estate, and being able to fold it up and throw it in my pocket is icing on the cake. I plan on reading more, and using it for GPS/Waze in the car is freakin' awesome! I'm really loving it. My only complaint, so far, is the sideways scrolling in the app drawer. Come on, Samsung! Continuous perpendicular scrolling is much more convenient. Thoughts? How do you folks like yours? Tell us what you like and dislike.
Dude, download GoodLock and you will love it even more.

Cool! I stopped rooting with my Pixel 6 Pro. I could ad block without root and with dark mode baked in I was somewhat satisfied, but I did miss Substratum. This is like Substratum without root. Love it! Thanks.

The fold for is such an impressive phone. I'm sorry that I waited this long to dive into the fold arena. I use the flip 3 and flip 4 but got rid of those phones and this one takes the cake. I don't think I can ever go back to a regular slab phone again.
coming from a note 9, i don't think i'll be able to go back to a slab phone. i've been holding off buying anything and for the longest time my note 9 was my daily driver. if i wanted to upgrade it, it would be something different. i was almost tempted to get the fold 3 but opted to wait until the fold 4 came out. the outer screen being wider than the fold 3 (ok, just a little bit) and the cameras were the clinchers. my wife got me the fold 4 for father's day after she saw me reading/browsing and making numerous trips to jb hifi to inspect the phone on display. the spen is fantastic and the only thing i lost from the note 9's pen is the camera bt remote and the sound it makes when i take out the pen (my son asked me to change the remove and insert to sounds of a light saber). took me a day or so of fiddling around and setting it up to the way i want it to be. it's now the same layout as my note 9 which suits me. i'm still using nova launcher with a klwp preset for the inner screen. outer screen is using just a static, black wallpaper. goodlock has proven to be very useful as the alternative to one ui's taskbar and it's provided me with an easy power off and screenshot buttons. the only shortcoming i've seen so far is sometimes android auto fails to connect with the phone. i know that an update is on the way to fix this but at the moment and easy work around is to clear up the cache from google playstore. other than that, the inner screen real estate is fantastic for browsing, reading books, vids, and all.
Running x2 versions of Cyberpunk on one device whilst also being able to download and extract saved games files from Stadia (try doing that on a system without an oen file management setup).
This thing isn't a phone, its a computer that fits my pocket!!

Me: Verizon will give me all but $99 back for my Pixel 6 Pro toward a Fold4. I'm going to order one.
Wife: You're getting a new phone? You haven't had that one a year yet.
Guess who's Fold4 is being delivered today. She had her 6 Pro for a shorter time than I had mine.
I'm gettuing annoyed with both the skinny front screen and the crease. I have an Oppo Find N and the crease is almost non-existent, as well as a Vivo X Fold. The outer display on the X Fold is the perfect size, I find the Find N a bit small now (think 2009 size) and the crease is also a hell of a lot better. Both these phones were purchased long before the Z Fold4 and neither crease is getting worse over time.
My perfect foldable would be the X Fold hardware (adding in S pen too) with the Z Fold firmware. And add in a micro SD card slot as well.
Until these phones hit the global market however, Samsung won't do anything about this.

the crease is there to get waterprotection which none of the chinese phones have, I rather have that than not, do you really think Samsung can't make a phone with non visible crease?

I'm with you. Give me the water resistance. The crease is a non-issue for me. I really only notice it every once in a while.
Is prefer the lesser crease. I don't tend to swim with my phone & both the Oppo Find N and Vivo X Fold both work fine as long as I don't dunk them in water. The lesser crease helps if writing on the screen with a pen which I do a lot...
