[APP][05/08/10][WM 6.x] Windows Media Center - Remote Control - 0.8 BETA

Hey guys,
Because there seems to be no simple, functional and easy to use remote control for windows media center on windows mobile devices out there, I've decided to build my own. At the moment it is an interim release, mainly to see how well the new WMC plugin and connection process are working. The current release only allows basic control of Windows Media Center, as i am still working on the media information code.
*I should have files up for you to download in the next few days.
As this is still in the beta stage, there will be bugs, so i need testers to test it and provide any feedback possible.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. - Download and install WMCRC Server 0.1b on your PC
2. - Download and install WMCRC Client 0.8b on your handset
3. - Connect phone to PC using Wifi or activesync (USB/Bluetooth) connection
4. - Run Windows Media Center on your PC
5. - Launch the "Windows Media Center" from your start menu on your Windows Mobile Device
6. - Wait for a list of computers to appear
7. - Select computer from list then hit "connect"
8. - Start controlling!​

WMCRC 0.7b - How to...
CONNECTING TO WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER:
There are two ways to connect to media center: automatically and manually.
-The app will automatically search for computers on your network when it is launched, if the 'automatically connect' option is disabled in the settings menu. it is disabled by default, but if youve set it in a previous release, you'll need to change it to enable searching.
-If the 'automatically connect' option is ticked, then the app will not search for computers. Instead it will try to automatically connect you to the address you entered on the settings menu after 15 seconds. Use this option if you are having problems with the search.​
CONTROLLING WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER:
Press the green button at the top right to go to the start menu.
Left softkey provides a menu with several useful shortcuts, such as volume presets and shortcuts to music, tv and videos. To disconnect or exit the application, select disconnect>disconnect/exit from this menu.
Dragging and releasing the progress slider seeks the media to the desired position, useful for podcasts or long mp3s.
Typing on the keyboard or SIP when the 'enable hardware keyboard' option is used will send characters you type to Windows Media Center for use when searching through your media collection.
If your handset has a hardware d-pad, you are able to use this to control media center. Otherwise, tick the "enable touch d-pad" option in the settings menu to use the software d-pad.​HARDWARE D-PAD:
Pressing the 'directional' button on the top-right switches the d-pad to media control mode, where:
-enter is play/pause
-left/right is prev/next
-up/down is channel up/down
Pressing it again reverts back to normal directional navigation mode.
The right softkey acts as a back button for menu navigation.
Pressing the volume button will switch to volume control mode (hardware d-pad only) and using the up/down d-pad changes volume, and the left/right buttons change it by a larger amount. Press volume button again or enter on d-pad to switch back to normal mode.​SOFTWARE D-PAD:
Pressing the 'directional' button on the top-right switches the d-pad to media control mode, where:
-enter is play/pause
-left/right is channel up/down
-up/down is volume up/down
Pressing it again reverts back to normal directional navigation mode.
The right softkey will toggle the d-pad on and off, so you are still able to see information about what's currently playing.
Onscreen d-pad will not work in landscape mode.​

Bugs + errors + faults
KNOWN BUGS:
-text flickers (and background sometimes disappears) when updating on start screen (this might not be fixable as there is no double-buffering support for WM)
-when searching for computers, sometimes causes application to freeze or run slowly. (if this happens try the manual connection method)
-has trouble connecting to some PCs
-sometimes doesn't update now playing info​

I have no luck with this desired application.
when I start the program, I see the main screen, and when configure the host IP, and press connect, I can see one second the control screen (track, album, volume...) but inmediatelly the program shows "disconnected from" and go inactive.
Any suggestion?

Are you using an ipv4 address for your pc? make sure your router is set to use ipv4 not ipv6 if possible.

New Version 0.4 Beta
new release is uploaded, fixed problems with ipv6 being used instead of ipv4 with some dhcp configs.

It's possible to develop the funtionalities in order to make become this software a "control point" of a upnp a/v chain ?
I have a PC or a NAS (with, for example, Twonky media server) with my mp3 (or others media formats) and I have a media renderer like a Soundbridge or a Noxon to play the music. With my phone I can control the chain and I can play on a media renderer an mp3 contained on a media server. All in a wi-fi environment.
This application exist for iPhone but there aren't for win mobile (or better... there are a couple of programs but don't work.... Rudeo, KinskyPDA).

Already flashed MIUI ROM? OK, pick up your phone now, let’s start our happy journey of MIUI ROM.
The first step: selecting apps
Various apps will greatly enrich your cell phone, so firstly let’s select the apps to your taste. Use the Android Market and download what you would like. If you are using a backup app and restoring apps from a previous ROM, only restore the apps and not the data. Otherwise that will create a lot of force close issues.
Tip: How to copy files from the computer to the phone? First connect your phone to your computer via data cable, pull down the notification panel from the top of the phone, click “USB connected”, and then click "Turn on USB storage”.
After copying, do not forget to select the option of “Turn off USB storage”, otherwise "File Manager” in the phone will not be able to find the sd card, as it is being occupied by the computer.
Now I have a lot of apps, how to put them in order?
All apps successfully installed are listed on the desktop, however, they may not be in the order you want, how to put them in order?
Long press an app icon and then you may move it freely. When it is moved to the screen border, the screen will automatically switch to the next screen.
How to add a screen? Use two fingers to pinch on the desktop to enter screen thumbnail mode. Then you may add or delete screens.
How to delete an app? Long press the app icon you want to delete, drag it on top of the trash box and click OK to delete it.
The second step: let's make your phone different.
A phone without style is nothing remarkable, so let’s make your phone different!
Changing wallpaper: Click Menu button on the desktop, select “Change Wallpaper” to replace the wallpaper. In addition to the existing wallpaper in the phone, thousands of pieces of wallpaper are also available online.
Changing theme: Themes make great changes to your interface style. Click “Theme Manager” on the desktop to select the theme you like. Also, more online themes are available online.
Selecting ringtones and more: click “Settings” on the desktop to set call and notification ringtones. In “Personalization” under “Personal” tab, you may find more options.
The third step: it’s time for some advanced techniques!
Well, you are no longer a beginner now, so let’s learn some advanced techniques.
Adding widgets on the desktop: press the Menu button on the desktop, select "Edit Mode", and then click the icon on the upper right corner to access the interface of “Add Widgets”. Choose your favorite widget on the top, and then drag it to the screen below.
Using folders to manage desktop apps: in the interface of “Add Widgets”, drag [Folder] to the desktop. You may drag multiple apps into folders to classify them. After opening the folder, you may click the edit icon in the upper left corner to rename the folder.
Using toggles panel to improve efficiency: drag the notification panel down from the top, click "Toggles" to go to the toggles panel (It goes to the toggles panel in default of notice.) On the panel are listed the most commonly used toggles, you may click to quickly enable or disable a toggle. Long press on the icon will launch the settings for that icon.
Guest mode: enable the “Guest Mode” toggle in the panel, and your calls and text messages logs will be hidden, and all installed applications cannot be removed. You may have a try when you need to show your phone to guests or children.
Importing contacts or binding accounts: you may use some apps to import a batch of contacts, or bind Google account directly in "Settings"> "Personal"> "Accounts & Sync Settings" to sync contacts at any time.
How to print screens? Press "Menu" key and "Volume Down" key at the same time to print a screen. The printed image is saved in the directory of MIUI in the SD card.
How to copy files from the computer without using the data cable? In case of a Wi-Fi connection, enter “File Manager” on the desktop, select the tab of "Remote Administration" to start the service, and then you will get an address. Enter the given address on the computer, then you may copy files without using a data cable!

Faster to add new contacts;
Contacts group management supported;

Themes
The third edition UI loading engine makes it faster and easier to change themes;
Partial theme customs are more flexible and comprehensive. Rich online wallpapers, ringtones, fonts and so on are available.
Camera
Faster loading speed enables you to take photos immediately.
More professional modes such as continuous shooting, timing and special effects supported.
Gallery
Faster picture browsing speed than that of native Android system;
Brand new view mode supports to view the pictures by folder path.
Music
Simultaneous enjoying and downloading massive online music. Music chart live playing and bulk downloads supported;
Automatic connection of lyrics and album covers. ID3 information editing supported;
Changing songs by swinging the phone and sleep mode supported.
Notifications
After pulling Notifications and Toggles panel down, changing panels by sliding the screen supported.

Tips & Tricks​
Long Press:Long press on the icon in Toggles will launch the settings for that icon.

Hold HomePress Home key at the first screen, you may preview screen thumbnails and add or move screens.
Delete Message or Call Log : Slide from left to right to quickly delete a message or a call log.
Edit Mode : You may hold down an icon by one hand to enter Edit Mode, and then use the other hand to slide the screen to move the icon to the target screen.
Call Activated : Your phone will vibrate when a call gets through.
Activate Music from Lockscreen : Double tap the time zone to launch the Music Player when the screen is locked.
Quick SMS/Phone Launch : In the lockscreen, hold down the icon of Call or SMS, and you can enter the responding program.
Quick Launch Torch : Hold down Home key to quickly enable the torch when the screen is locked.
Quick Launch Contact Options : Click the contact image in Calls, SMS and Contacts, shortcut menus will pop up.
Long Press Search : Long press on Search button will launch search via voice recognition.
Recovery Reboot : Click menu in “System Update” to reboot and enter recovery.
% for Battery : The battery will display the percentage of left battery capacity by Settings>System>Battery>Notification Indicator Style>Percentage.
Running Apps List : Long press on the Home button can go to “Program Manager”. Click the “Clear up” button at the bottom left to clear the extra processes in memory. And the system will inform you of the released memory and current available memory.
Note: System processes will not be cleared so as to ensure the normal running of the system.
IP Calling : . How to set IP dialing?
MIUI ROM can add an IP prefix for the called number in a strange land. You may set it in Settings>Common>Calls.
You may also long press the contact item before dialing, and choose “Make IP calls” in the pop-up menu.
Reject Call : When you are not available to answer the phone, you may slide up the panel to reject the call and to send a message to the caller at the same time.
Custom Ringtones : . How to set custom ringtones?
Put media files into the Media/Audio/ringtones directory in the SD card, (If there is none of this directory, please create one manually) and then select in Sounds in Settings.
Note: there are three directories under Audio, corresponding to the following tones:
notifications--notification ringtones
ringtones--incoming call ringtones
alarms--alarming ringtones
Supported formats: MP3, WMA, WAV, Midi, etc.
Important SMS : As for those important messages you want to add to your favorites, you may long press the message in the pop-up menu and select "Favorites". You may switch to "Favorites" tab in the main SMS interface to view collected messages.
Quick Delete SMS : How to quickly delete items?
You may slide from left to right on the item and click on the red "Delete" button when it appears.
Tether : How can I share my network to the PC or other terminals?
Firmware of Android 2.2 and above support the sharing of mobile phones to other Internet terminal in the following method:
Go to "Settings" -> "System" -> "Share mobile network", you may choose to share the Internet connection by USB tethering or setting up portable Wi-Fi hotspot. [/QUOTE]

Oo shiny, I'm thinking this build of MIUI is playing nice with my screen this time.
Rather annoying being unable to answer calls cause the screen doesn't respond to touch.. Time to put the miui.us build on my Milestone

Optimized ADB connection mechansims for FireOS5. Should now work without disable + enable ADB after reboots. Still no parallel ADB connections possible.
Added shortcut to ADB settings in AppStarter settings.
Added first try of completely new detecting home-button clicks without adb (which is also used as Fallback after 3 failed ADB connects). The new non-ADB observation of the home-button works only if you are on the original Amazon FireTV Home screen. This means if you are in any other App like Kodi, you have to click the home button once to get to the Amazon FireTV Home screen and then you can single or double click the home-button to perform the action desired. In practice that means, you can also add one home button click if you are in another app. If you are for example in Kodi, you can do a double-click to the home-button to perform the single click operation and according to this you can do a triple click to perform the double click action. Sorry for this strange behaviour but due to technical limitations of Android, there is no other possibility without ADB at the moment.
Removed restart-option and replaced it with notification how to restart with the remote.
Better handling of the jumback-detection -> fixes some unnessecary jumpbacks especially when the click-action is "- No Action -" or "FireTV Home". You can again safely use the jumpback detection (e.g. with default of 5000ms)!
Option to start click-action apps with FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TASK -> Previous instances of the App are cleared before start (e.g. AppStarter then starts always on the first icon which is useful for some people with programmable remote's).
Everything only tested with FireOS4 on FireTV and with FireOS5 Developer Preview on FireTV-Stick. I am not yet able to test on a FireTV2 with the real FireOS5.

You are right, the replacement-icon is grap, but I'm not a designer and in a quick way it shows the replacement capability and is better than the original IkonoTV-Icon. I think about a better one
Hiding apps is definetly planed, I add it to my ToDo-List. But at the moment I am not "guessing" which apps the user dont want to see, I simply do not show system apps but only user installed apps (except for kftv-launcher/amazonhome).
I am with you, that look&feel is very important and I try to work on this part

I do not really understand your requirement, do you mean to simply start another app instead of the App but with the same home- and startup-detection? Is this not what AFTV Launcher Helper already does?

Ok I understand now, perhaps I will add this in future as an option.
For me it feels more attractive to have only one app without huge configuring steps.. For me the most important part is, that also beginners are able to use the App. That is why on the top of my ToDo-list are better installation instructions and possibility to install / keep updated some of the most famous apps from the App directly. So in the end my focus is really the usability espspecially for non-experts. I also think about a little (windows-) installation tool with auto-detection of the FireTV and Wizard-Charakter for the installation of the App. But this all is a lot of work and I dont know when I find the time to..
Anyway I am really happy to hear other's opinion and to get more inspiration by users, thank you again harlekinrains for your constructive feedback
BTW: Thanks for your uninstallation hint, perhaps I should also add an uninstallation routine, which cleans up the .imagecache-folder and triggers the the App uninstallation then..

Hey harlekinrains, too bad that it is not working on the firetv-stick out of the box. I had no firetv-stick to test, as my sister has it at the moment .
Thank you very much for the log's thats very helpful! I think we can rule out the performance of the firetv-stick, as the new way of catching the home-button click via adb is very performant. The only hard-coded timing is the waiting-time for the second click in the double-click detection. The other timings are only to trigger these informative toast messages. I think the reason could be, that on the firetv-stick usb-debugging is not possible? Could that be? That would not be an problem, I only have to change the way I connect to the local adb.
EDIT : Normally it must not be enabled in the settings. On my FireTV it is disabled and everything works perfect. The question was only: Is there a setting for usb-debugging on the FireTV-Stick?
If you have (and really only if you have) the time to, you can chek the following things (I do it on my own as far as I have the time to and have mit FireTV-Stick back):
From the shell of your pc go to the shell of the FireTV-Stick:

Thank you for the output, I think everything is clear now, the fact that there are by default two devices listed is the problem. I have to change my code to use adb with an explicit device. On my FireTV by default I have only the "emulator.."-entry which let it work without specifiing the adb-device..
Perhaps I can provide an update this afternoon, at the moment I am too busy

I have a Fire TV box and after a restart it says observer needs too long. That message is only viewable for seconds. The app doesnt work so far for me . Too bad

But as with Fire TV Helper - it seems to be possible to set a condition, even without root - that a jumpback - to the amazon menu is not - triggered. I wander if a timed jumpback block would be helpful here as well - the logic goes:
Button pressed - jumpback block blocks execution of the Amazon menu for *user setable time in seconds* - App launches (has said seconds to launch without the risk of getting interrupted) - jumpback block to the Amazon menu is removed.
.....
So idk if it will be fixable by the approach above (prevent the Amazon launcher to (re)start for a set time window after pressing the home button).

I dont have this behaviour on my FireTV but yes you're right, that sounds like a timing problem. The problem can be, that the new home-button detection method is too fast, which means that the launch of the custom-app is initiated before the launch of the amazon home launcher. Then it can happen, that the amazon launcher cames up instead of the custom selected app.
I can not imagine, that there is a way to prevent the amazon launcher from starting.. Dont know the feature of Fire TV Helper and I also cant jump into the sources, as it is not open source..
Two possibilities:
either I make a litte (customizable) delay for the custom start action (so e.g. the App or FiredTV is started with a little delay after the home-button-detection)
or somebody provides me with the ability to block the amazon-launcher from comming up..

I tried a little bit around and let TuneIn-Radio run in the background and then clicked like going wild^^ And infact when I set ES File Explorer as One-Click-Action and repeated clicking very fast single-clicks one after each other, I endend in a curious half-loaded amazon home screen. But a short view in the logcat showed, that not the App made something wrong but ES File Explorer was the reason, as it was in a "wake-lock" situation. Going to FireTV settings and force-stop ES File Explorer get it working again, perhaps thats the behaviour you ment? But thats some kind of monkey-test, I think nobody will switch apps that fast..
Anyway, in the next version I will add adjustable second-click-interval and also an adjustable delay for click-actions, perhaps this helps to prevent these situations..

Hmmm, ok none of this problems on my FireTV, it's hard to solve problems I can not reproduce.. But I have now again a FireTV-Stick of a friend of mine, so perhaps I can reproduce the behaviour on this device. But I guess you have to wait a little bit as I am on a little trip over the weekend.
One question: Are you now using the App (in daily use) or still only install it for testing? Would really feel happy if I got you as an user

Is there a chance to get back to the Amazon Home by clicking the HomeButton only one time and not by doubleclicking the homebutton?
I think this part is missing in the settings menu for the HomeButton single click action.....or am i wrong? :silly:

I testet FiredTV Launcher too and the only thing that it missing in your app is: please let the app show the settings app so I can start it via your launcher, so i dont have to use the Amazon launcher anymore

Hello everybody, back from my WE trip I found a really bad bug in the settings handling which on one hand caused that the action-delay have not been saved and on the other hand also caused unnessecary cpu-load. I fixed that bug and another bug with show-sys-apps setting. I also tested the App on a FireTV-Stick and it worked quite good. With the now working action-delay setting, I got very good results by leaving the double-click interval default and setting the action-delay to 100ms. But also with the default 10ms I had never one of theses half-amazon-home, half-app-screens.. Perhaps its also depended on what else is installed or running on the stick, I will keep an eye on it..
