Question Write/receive SMS when the smartphone is turned off (LTE version). - Google Pixel Watch

I know that this is not possible by default.
But I want to know if it is possible to receive or write SMS with unlocked bootloader or root (when the smartphone is turned off).
Is it WearOS or the hardware that can not receive messages independently? Could you theoretically install another operating system to solve the problem (If there ever will be a custom one)?

Doing this operation will never successful on phone turned off

I can't give you detailed steps because it is a while since i did this. Basically i needed so send an SMS from the watch to activate my unsupported eSIM from another carrier. I sideloaded various SMS apps that are made for android phones through ADB and one of them worked. So it is not a hardware or OS limitation.

I have already activated my unsupported eSIM with the known workaround that many go (buying a supported SIM and using it to bypass the app blocking mechanism for unsupported SIMs). I have never heard of having to send an SMS to activate it. Do I need to do this or can I start with sideloading through ADB?
Edit: Thank you so much. I installed the SMS App "Textra" by adb sideloading it on the watch. SMS are working now without the phone.

As you guessed the necessary SMS to activate the eSIM is a bit carrier specific. Most won't need to do this. My main problem is that there is no appropriate APN for my carrier on the watch, so i can just call ans text, but no data over LTE.
Happy for you, that you got it running that fast

[Q] Best app to track lost phone?

Hi Guys,
I wanted to know what any of you find to be the best app to find a lost phone. I wanted to know what the best app is to date since things can change over time, and I havent used this type of service for over a year. Some features I'd like are GPS tracking but little to no battery drain, and the ability to sound an alert even when the phone is silent or on vibrate. Thanks for any and all input.
Just me but I use the one that comes with 'Kaprasky Security', it is very accurate in my country of Canada so just try that or wait for other responses

I second this. No monthly or annual fees. Just pay $4 one time and it covers up to 5 devices.
Here's some of the features:
It has three ways to protect your device:
- Remote control through the website www.cerberusapp.com
- Remote control via text messages
- SIM Checker (for devices that have a SIM card): you will automatically receive alerts if someone uses your phone with an unauthorized SIM card
Remote control allows you to perform many operations on your device, like:
- Locate and track it
- Start a loud alarm, even if the device is set to silent mode
- Wipe the internal memory and the SD card
- Hide Cerberus from the app drawer
- Lock the device with a code
- Record audio from the microphone
- Get a list of last calls sent and received
- Get information about network and operator the device is connected to
- And much more!
Cerberus automatically enables GPS if it is off when you try to localize your device (only on Android < 2.3.3) and you can protect it from unauthorized uninstalling - more info in the app configuration.
The app works even if the device does not have an internet connection thanks to remote control by sms messages. Also, the SIM Checker feature allows you to know the new number to send texts to, if the SIM card is changed. Texts received and sent for Cerberus remote control will not start any notification and will not appear in the Messages application.
Cerberus does not drain the battery because there is no background service running: it will activate only if there is a remote control request and will stop afterwards.
More features for rooted devices: complete uninstall protection (a thief will be able to delete Cerberus only by flashing another ROM), GPS auto-enabling even on Android > 2.3.3. More info on the website in the Help section.

I used that to find my wife's phone. Did a remote install too as I didn't have it on the device. .. Amazing.
I've heard a lot about Cerberus, but it needs to always be running on your device from what I can see. Can you remote install and configure it only when you need it? If not, that's a pretty dangerous app to allow basically all functions of your phone to be accessed online...
I use avast! Mobile Security. You can install the application and then enable Anti-Theft. Once it's set-up and installed, you can uninstall avast! Mobile Security. (I'm unable to provide links, but they have a webpage that describes the necessary steps better.)
You can then use a bunch of different commands via text message to locate/lock/unlock/etc. your phone. You can specify two phone numbers to be the only phones that can communicate with your device, or you can leave it open. (Commands sent to your device must contain your pin code and then the command.)
The FAQ for the app says it does not run in the background and is only activated when a text command is sent to the phone. (I think this program only works if you're able to receive text messages to your actual number. Not via Google Voice.)
avast mobile security is awesome!
I use cerberus...they have features such a remote recording of video and audio which I don't think is available on SeekDroid which I was on before

You can buy a ball of yarn at the hardware store for a few cents. Tie one end to the phone, one end to your wrist.

Okay... I just tested it now with Cerberus dashboard (online website where you can send commands from) with my phone unlocked right in front of me. Sent command "start tracking" and saw with my own eyes the WIFI and GPS toggles go from OFF to ON. Wifi and GPS still on... Sent command "stop tracking" and WIFI and GPS toggles went from ON to OFF.
---Edit---
Sorry, I was wrong about the administrator privileges, by enabling that, it will allow you to erase your data/sd card remotely. To get WIFI and GPS to turn on when you send the tracking command, you have to push Cerberus to /system/app

Cerberus help page, and I quote:
"I have a rooted device. Can I get additional features?
Yes! If you have rooted your device you can integrate Cerberus into your ROM and get two additional features: complete uninstall protection (Cerberus will even survive a wipe/factory reset) and GPS auto-enabling even on Android 2.3.3 and later. To have these features uninstall Cerberus, then download cerberus.zip, put it on the sd card and install it from recovery. Cerberus is also available on ROM Manager."
Taken from avast! Mobile Security app page, and I quote:
"Self-Protection
Extremely difficult for thieves to remove (especially on rooted phones), Anti-Theft protects itself from uninstall by disguising its components with various self-preservation techniques. On rooted phones it is able to survive hard-resets and can even disable the phone’s USB port."

Guide: How I fixed MMS Settings in Flashable VS996. Might work on All V30 Stock Roms.

Hey all. I thought I would share what I found in fixing my own MMS issues in the hopes that maybe this will help other people. I only take responsibility for what I did to my own Frankensteined, unlocked, US998 kdz'd, stock Verizon Rom'd V30 phone. If this doesn't work for you or causes you issues, I am in no way at fault or liable for what you did to your own phone. I only know this worked for me.
I'm on Verizon and installed Westwood's flashable VS996 20-D ROM over the US998 20B KDZ. For some time, I've been having issues sending MMS messages from both Android's Stock "Messaging" app and Google's "Messages" app. I was able to use Verizon Messaging+, which is set to work directly with Verizon's servers, and was also able to use Legacy mode in Textra, where I was able to set the APN for Textra to use independently of what the system was set to use. However, I wanted to use the somewhat more Default messaging apps, Android Messaging or Google Messages...or at least have the ability to do so.
After a lot of sleuthing, and some subsequent testing, I found that the default APN settings for MMS messaging is saved in:
\root\data\data\com.android.mms\shared_prefs\com.android.mms_preferences.xml
Now, there's a lot of other stuff in there, and I didn't feel comfortable changing things around in that file, so I used another program, Shortcut Master Lite, from the XDA forums, to search for those hidden settings. (There is also a full, paid version of this program on Google Play to support the developer. There are likely many other programs that do the same things as well).
In ShortcutMaster Lite, I clicked the hamburger (3-dot) button choose App Explorer.
I scrolled down to and clicked on Messaging (com.android.mms)
I scrolled to the bottom and clicked on MmsSprintSettingActivity
I clicked on Launch
There I was able to see what the default MMS settings are. In my case, this was still set to the Sprint URL, https:/mms.sprintpcs.com, and some fancy Gateway and Port.
I changed these values to match up with Verizon's MMS settings, so I set the URL to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms, and then left Gateway and Set Port blank. After saving this, the phone IMMEDIATELY rebooted on it's own. After a brief heart attack, the phone rebooted and .... whaBAM! Both Messaging and Messenger work fine now!
It's kind of funny that the setting that needs to be changed is MmsSprintSettingActivity, no? Is that a holdover from the original KDZ? Is @westwood24 's Rom possibly flawed?
Also funny is that, upon post-change review, the Gateway field, which I intentionally left blank, says "only sprint server". Ha!
So in the end, these steps helped me fix my stock MMS-application(s) setting(s) problem(s). Maybe this can help others as well.
I decided to experiment with this yesterday. I'm on Verizon and have a converted LS998 and was using US99820d flashable ROM. I purchased Shortcut Master and did some exploring. Sorry I didn't grab any screenshots while in the US998 ROM but I found a similar mms/apn hidden app that mentioned Sprint in its name that wasn't exactly under com.android.mms. I changed it the url to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms (notice the spelling of servlets lacking the "e") and blanked out all the other fields. The phone rebooted when I closed the app. I use Textra so went I to its settings and reverted the MMS behavior from Legacy back to System. I rebooted and opened Textra back up to find it fully working on the "stock" System mms settings. I thought this was a good reason to flash the latest VS996_20F ROM. I flashed the ROM and found the same mms location/settings reported by my.ads0 in the VS996 ROM. Using Shortcut Master I explored system apps and found Messaging com.android.mms (screen shot 1). I tapped it and launched MmsSprintSettingsActivity (screen shot 2). After launching, this is where you can edit default Sprint url (screen shot 3). You have to blank out all the other fields with the space bar. I closed the app and the phone rebooted. Textra was now fully functioning under the VS996 ROM without using its Legacy setting. The stock LG and Verizon sms apps are working too.
A bonus note is that I checked my WiFi calling and Video calling settings after all of this and they both were not grayed out! I'll have to try to test this soon. I never used these features because I live in a rural area but if they work because of the information that my.ads0 found it might help others. It may help that my Verizon account was already provisioned for these features because of my VZW Droid Turbo.)
What I'm sort of taking from all of this is that either the ROM or your provider's network automagically senses and fills in the mms system settings according to the type of LG V30 device you have unless you actually edit these settings to reflect your service provider when using a Frankensteined V30.

I know! Isn't that crazy? That kept on throwing me for a loop and sent me searching for that elusive value. Does that mean that the KDZ process sets that value and then the Verizon flashing just leaves it in place? Weird.

Sweet! So that's the fix needed for verizon roms. Canestfr & I had to check for OTA's at least once to enable those features on our devices. But if this method does that for us, that's even better as it kills two birds with one stone.
Thanks for these follow ups, 4stringenator!
Hopefully what you started will help other Verizon folks! This is what XDA is all about. We may not have numerous custom Roms but every little bit helps keep control of our tech.

I don't believe it has anything to do the gracious work that westwood24 has done for community either. :good: I have the same issue with full VS996 and US998 KDZs. The firmware and VZW network can detect that I am using a LS998 device. I always had to change the settings within the sms/mms apps to get multimedia messages work properly. Having the ability to change these setting within the android system helped my non-Verizon supported LS998 become fully functional now. (At least in the St. Louis area VZW network) :victory: There probably is way more to this but I'm happy that I didn't have to pay full price for a VS996 and now can enjoy all the features on an affordable LS998 V30.

You can always go back to using previous Textra. And then don't let it update. UNcheck automatic updates for that one app in Google Play.
One expects a full KDZ flash to convert the phone to the model of the KDZ, at least within compatible sets like US998 (open market and US cellular flavors), LS998, VS996 and AS998. Subtle issues like with texting and booting weirdness of AOSP roms on certain frankensteined models shows that isn't true. Thinking like a detective, there might be value in collecting images from Frankensteined v30's according to this matrix below for comparisons and to pull back the curtain. One benefit would be to understand what is happening behind the scenes. Another is to have a list of all of the differences to account for in a conversion.

I just noticed that today when I updated Textra too. The updated Textra should work once you find the system mms settings. I'm using the updated Textra currently with no issues. You are going to have to explore and poke around a little under system apps in Shortmaster. Look under com.android.mms to begin with. Start launching and exploring untill you find the settings screen with the Set URL, Gateway and Set Port. Tap on each one to edit. (Sorry I can't remember where it was when using the US99820x rom.) Once you find this you only change the URL to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms. The Gateway and Port need to be blank. Once you change those and tap your back navigation button the phone will reboot. Go back and check your settings to make sure the Url is correct and the others are blank. I have a Verizon account, your gateway and port may need to be adjusted for Total Wireless https://bestmvno.com/apn-settings/total-wireless-apn-settings/
Textra app update after Nov. 1st FYI
My question to Textra devs on Dec 11: "I had issues with not being able to change the mms to "legacy' a few updates ago. I always needed this ability to edit the mms url and port for Textra to function properly. I purchased the app specifically for that function a few years ago because I use a rooted phone and custom ROMs on Verizon. Is this feature forever discontinued?"
Textra's reply:
As part of a greater Google initiative to ensure all apps are compiled against a later version of Android (API 26) from 1 Nov 2018, all apps must comply. For Textra users, this means the following features had to be removed in order to comply:
1) Notification Icons can only be white (unless you are running Android KitKat or below)
2) Notification vibration is either on or off (with a pattern) and can no longer be set independantly of your phones sound settings (as was the case in v3.50 of Textra).
3) The Android System APIs must be used for MMS, you can no longer do your own MMS protocol due to certain APIs no longer being available. This means the WiFi fix feature is also gone in Textra.
Please understand these are not features we wanted to remove (why would we?), but we had no choice.
For more details see https://developer.android.com/distribute/best-practices/develop/target-sdk
Still not happy? Please don't give a poor review, as we have no control over this, and leaving a poor review only hurts us. Even if you are angry at Google, don't shoot the messenger!
You can always downgrade to v3.50 (the last version of Textra without these Google changes) but remember you'll never get another update again or any bug fixes. Understood?
1) Uninstall Textra
2) Install http://adhoc.textra.me/Textra-35090.apk
3) Turn off auto-updates for Textra in Google Play

I recently purchased a new V 30+ from Wally World. Unlocked, rooted, and flashed vs996g. Everything is fine except VOWIFI. With my previous V30+ I was able to get VOWIFI working but with the new one, no luck. I have used Shortcut Master and gone into Verizon Hidden Menu and populated the VOWIFI toggle with my number, enabled VOWIFI in WIFI calling, LG IMS Provisioning, and Call services and still no luck. I get the VOWIFI enabled in Advanced calling, the VOWIFI Icon next to all my contacts, but when I go to make a call, it says WIFI Call for a couple of seconds and then the icon disappears before the call connects. I'm ready to give up and go back to my other V30+ and use this one as my backup, but I really wanted to use this one as my daily driver since it's brand new. Anyone have any suggestions?
Just tried to tun my wifi calling back on, my network is having issues. I live in a very rural area. Can try when I'm back at work in the big city.

Yes, same sim. Someone on another thread suggested a logcat, but I don't know what I'm looking at. Not even sure if I did it correctly.

Chat Features in Messages

Anyone else have the issue with enabling chat features in Messages? I'm not sure if it is a carrier issue or an issue with Messages or the device? I've tried contacting my carrier and getting them to reset my RCS profile, but apparently they are having "issues" with doing this. I have read that others have had this issue and replacing the sim card has fixed it. I tried doing that yesterday to no avail. I get the attached message and then nothing ever happens. I've tried clearing cache and data for Messages, trying again, rebooting, etc. No go. This was a feature I really wanted to get enabled on this device. My carrier (Rogers) does offer RCS messaging, but this simply is not working or not provisioning with the carrier server.
Since no one ever responded here and the carrier still hasn't come up with a fix, here is what I did to enable chat features and get past that "excuse the wait..." screen:
Restarted the device
Go to settings-apps-android messages and then force stop
Launch Google Play and uninstall messages
Then go back to Google Play and install latest version again
Chat features are then enabled. Not that it's that big of a deal because if the people you are texting don't have a phone that supports RCS and even if they do, if they don't have chat features turned on, then it still won't work. It was simply bugging me because the option was there and I couldn't get it enabled.
I am with rogers and have same issue. How do you uninstall messages? It only uninstall its update. Do you root to uninstall complete messages app?
I'm also with Rogers, and this is the solution that worked for me. I found it on the Rogers Community forums.
You have to disable the app called Carrier Services, now setup RCS through the Messages app.
Then you can reenable Carrier Services.
I also rebooted, but I don't know if that's necessary. I hope this helps.

If you force stop it, you can uninstall. It may only uninstall the updates, but it does uninstall after you finally get it to force stop. I had to try force stop a couple of times.

I didn't have to do this portion. When I went into Messages after doing my steps, chat features were automatically enabled.
What was really funny is Rogers kept sending me emails telling me they were "working on a fix but hadn't found one yet." When I got another email yesterday stating this from them, I chatted with tech support and told them I had fixed it myself so they could stop sending me emails about them working on it. Then I get an email from them stating that "they had fixed my issue..." LOL. Sure, sure you did.
I can't honestly say this was the cause, but my issues didn't happen until I updated to the January Security Patch. I'll try these steps tonight to see if I can get them re-enabled.

I'm curious because I have purchased my Pixel 3 from Google and I'm using it on a carrier (T-Mobile) who doesn't sell the P3, but is starting to support RCS. However, their version of RCS support appears to only be enabled through a carrier supplied software update to T-Mobile branded phones. I'm afraid I'll never be able to use RCS on the ONE phone that comes with RCS support out of the box.
But if you were able to get RCS support without Rogers selling the phone, then there may still be hope for me someday!

Yup. Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in their stores, online, etc.
If anyone's RCS won't work after clicking "yes, I'm in", just disable carrier services, go back to messages and opt in again. Once working, enable carrier services.
Chat features work in Messages App by Google LLC for me nearly everywhere now:
- Huawei AL10 P9 running Emui 8 Oreo on Telekom network in Hungary on WiFi (no Data subscription)
- Samsung Note 4 N910V LineageOS 16.0 Pie on Telekom network in Hungary on WiFi and Data
- Samsung Note 4 N910V LineageOS 16.0 Pie on GoogleFi roaming in Hungary on WiFi (cannot get LTE Network/Data connected to any tower)
- new device Google Pixel 2 XL Android Q on GoogleFi roaming in Hungary (will test in July)
On my home MikroTik router WiFi, where I run a domain and webserver, i forward port 80/443 to the webserver.
This is the only WiFi network, where I cannot use chat features for unknown reasons.
QUESTION: WHAT PORT(S) DOES RCS / CHAT FEATURES USE ON A WIFI NETWORK FOR COMMUNICATION TO OTHER PARTY AND THE PROVIDER SERVER (IN CASE OF FILE TRANSFER)
Google Fi support and Telekom HU Support dont understand the simple question or they resist to answer me, by replying constantly with the copy/paste of troubleshooting guides that I read all already. Either those are bot replies, or Google started to employ Level 1 people that are forced to reply automatic text. Telekom HU Support always was a big pain in the ass.
did you every figure it out?
Did you ever get this figured out? I've put my router in full DMZ and I still can't get RCS chat features to work on my home WiFi … but They USED TO WORK until a month or two ago... not sure when, It was my wife who noticed. tred 4 phones on 3 carriers, non work. many businesses have notices on the front doors too because it's killing employee's batteries while they work all day. Google refuses to answer.

I never succeeded yet
I assume (as a RCS novice) support has no idea what RCS is and Google has support agents that have also no idea and the people who developed this left the company or got kicked out...
I also think that my webserver port 80 and 443 causes this, I will try disabling the forward cause my webserver died waiting for replacement unit

I changed the forwarding to not forward ports 80 and 443 to a dedicated IP, still did not help
the router behind my mikrotik router and its wifi is capable of getting a status Connected
the mikrotik router itself and its wifi cannot get beyond Connecting...
I wonder if that might have to do something with IPv6?
Hi. After resetting the phone to factory settings, I can not turn on the chat features, the message configures is displayed, after a few attempts the message "confirm your number" appears, after three attempts the message "limit exceeded try again tomorrow" and so on overnight trying. There is a solution to this problem?

Call & Text on other devices is missing on my Tab S7+ 5G T-Mobile

Hi
I can't find call and text on other devices on my T-Mobile tab S7+, and phone app missing too.
It was good on my old Tab S6 but can't find anymore on S7....
Thanks
I suspect if you have an S7/S7+ with mobile data, it has its own phone number and what not. As a result, you may not be able to call/text from another device since your device itself has its own number. I may be wrong, but that seems like the logical answer. Have you tried turning mobile data off or somehow disabling it? Maybe take the SIM card out if you can (not sure if it's an ESIM).
If the above statement isn't true, I would say factory reset it if you haven't already. If you still encounter the issue, I'd talk to Samsung/T-Mobile about it. Personally, the ability to call/text from the tablet while my phone is away is a huge selling point for me as I don't have to take out my phone much anymore.
Good luck, and let us know what happens. I'm sure there will be someone else that encounters this issue.
Was your Tab S6 a U.S. carrier version? The U.S. carriers disable not only what you're looking for but the native dialer and MMS as well. I got my Tab S7+ 5G from the EU and it has Call and Text on Other Devices. I'm using it between by Z Fold 2 and Tab S7+. It doesn't affect the Tab S7+'s ability to use it's own phone number; it just adds the option of using either device for calls and MMS.

I might be wrong on this, but the way I understand it is that the feature links the devices via Samsung Cloud. So the only device that needs a number would be the phone. It shouldn't matter whether the other devices have one or not as they should still work independently.
I know this is an old thread, but...
This feature was present on the S6 LTE version, so there should be no reason for it not to be available here. The S7 (non-plus) 5G also has this enabled on T-Mobile, so again - no good reason for the S7+ not to have it.
You are right about the Samsung account - both devices have to be logged into the same account for the feature to work.
The dialer app is present, but not able to be activated.
I have the Samsung tab S7 plus 5G by Verizon. I have a SIM card installed and the representative of Verizon that I talked to told me that it's just for data.
I was very upset. because I encountered the same thing no phone app no text app the Google phone app on Google play is incompatible with my device.
I use Google voice app for Wi-Fi call and texting.

I haven't used Google Voice for a bit but it's it possible to have the calls FROM you to someone else appear to have your phone's number or caller ID?
I fixed this and got it fully working. Here's the thread....
I got Call and Text from other devices working on Tab S7+ 5G (at least on Tmobile)
I got call and text from other devices working on my Tmobile Tab S7+ 5G. It's super easy. All you need to do is install the apk below because apparently, all we were missing was the app. That's literally all I did. WARNING: Just be warned as...

Question Can't get rid of this notification about sim card

I'm using esim on my p6p and i never installed a sim card in it so why do I keep getting this notification?
Did you check out what the Device Unlock app had to say?
I can't find that app plus the device isn't unlocked, I'm still paying it off through TMobile and using it on TMobile esim
What does clicking on the notification do? Have you tried contacting T-Mobile about the issue?
Clicking it does nothing, haven't contacted TMobile yet. I didn't have this issue till I updated to 12L beta so idk if that has anything to do with it

Could be, and since 12L Beta 3 wouldn't be considered "supported" since it isn't stable, they probably couldn't help anyway. I didn't know you were on 12L at all. That's an important detail.

The T-Mobile Device unlock app (GOOGLE PIXEL ONLY) is available in the Google Play Store:
T-Mobile Device Unlock (Google - Apps on Google Play
Request a Mobile Device Unlock from T-Mobile without calling Customer Service
play.google.com
It should work on your device,as it does on mine w/Android 13 installed.
Mine is unlocked,so,I'm not sure what kind of messaging/code it will give you, guessing something related to the unlocked/still financed state of your phone.
FYI,if you're considering the temporary unlock option for B/L unlock status,I'm certain this is not sufficient for doing so.
If your main objective is to just simply make the notification go away permanently,IDK if there's anything accessible in Android 12L's settings for notifications to disable it.
Try long pressing on the notification,it may expand to present an option to silence this particular notification.
Also,is your phone otherwise working w/the e-SIM?
It appears so,as I see the LTE icon in your status bar........
