So I just read somewhere that the our hermes have an on board gps chip built in.. any way to get it to work? or is it just there and there is no use for it? thanks

Yes you did read correctly.
The htc hermes does have a GPS
chip it's circuits, however
the chip on all release platforms have had the chip deliberately disabled in the following manor.
1.drivers removed from the roms
2. crucial pins left unconnected
3. a few support components left out
4. antenna pins and support connections for both an internal and external antenna left nonexistent .
It's very unfortunate as I spent the better part of a month looking between the thread here and on 4winmobile only to find that the best of the best hardware hackers had failed to come up with a resolve due to usually lack of tools required, components difficult at times to obtain, and the almost 98% chance of unrepairably damaging the main pcb or the surrounding components in which you would then be left with the preverbial brick of which there is no safty net or special bootloader to save you. thusly I gave up and finally just did what most get when they buy or get the hermes withco pilot. I bought a good bluetooth gps receiver and loaded software for it to be used by. in this case it was tom tom 6.
I feel for you in this one as it would have been nice if the hermes was like the artimas [ie: o2 orbit, t-mobile mda compact]
and had it built in. But alas the is no technical resolve that can be achieved as of now for this other then to go bluetooth external receiver.
*hehe chalk one up for the noobs referring to the senior vs new members to the board which I find funny as I may not post as much as others but I know more then what the rating suggests heheh*

my question is why would high paid asian techs leave some gps chip that would not be used
that is not business like at all
just like carriers leaving ot the front video camera, and still charing ridiculous prices for the unit !!!!!!!!

If memory serves me correctly the Universal was original sold with an optional TV/VGA out cable. It may be worth posting on the HTC forum itself or digging around. I am pretty sure that it was only the first few G3 devices that were advertised as having these cables, but have had a dig around myself last year for these to no avail.

Wow, that sounds kewl, might have to email HTC.
The only info I could find on this is whats in the Wiki anyways
The touch-screen controller given shows the pin-outs which should tell us the touch-screen pin-config'.
I've given up on this anyway so I turned my camera into a nightvision camera really easy to do!

Share more details, I too was playing before with camera and IR leds
sorry this will be mega rushed just realised im still in my pjs and gotta be at work soon!
Basically you dissasemble to PDA as shown in the wiki, then take apart camera base, behind it there should be a coloured filter (IR filter) take it out and replace with two really dark things (like the begining of a negative) then put together and take pictures in the dark whilst pushing a button on a remote control i will make a proper how to do thingy when im home tonight!
Bye for now!
IR Camera
Right first of all I think I tried it with my Uni and couldn't suss how to get to the IR filter but I tried it on my Nokia and its working like a charm!
1: Take apart the phone,
2: Uncouple camera,
3: Using a knife prise the four corners of the circuit board off the base of the camera (make sure you only go about 1mm in MAX! Also make sure you remember which way round it goes ),
4: Unscrew the lenses off the front,
5: Punch out the IR filter, this should be the slightly coloured one usually red (or find a way to take it out properly if you wanna keep it but mine was glued on),
6: Find an old photo album and take the negatives, look for the first part where it is just pure black (no pictures) and cut two circles out of it to place where the IR filter was, (this will be your visable light filter),
7: Reassemble,
8: Go somewhere dark and use a remote control as a light source and take photos!

Supposedly use of the stereo jack aggravates the problem. I see this a lot in Europe and very little in the US. So far.

Yeah it would be helpful if you post saying you are having an issue if you would also say what version of the phone you have. US or UK or whatever else is out there.
Seems mostly like there are two hardware versions, but I could be wrong.
i am not buying this phone until I get more info on this problem. many people on the net have this problem.

Honestly I only see the reboot on the non-US Motorola forum: three or four people in the UK. They are claiming it's related to loss of 3G?
i think it has something to do with specific SIM cards (3n or 5n). theres more info on the german forum of android-hilfe.de

Where are you? I'm hoping they'll replace mine as opposed to sending it off to get it repaired.
How long have you had the new one?
Less than a week and no issues as of yet. I have had two random reboots so far but both were when my battery was under ten percent. Only issue I've had this far is battery life but I think its in part to me running launcher pro and not rooting yet, and the fact I use my phone ALOT. Overall I'm happy though, so much so that I will pay full price for a second one for the wife!
I am in Germany. They wanted to send it in for repairs first but i had them exchange it on the spot. The second one is on it's first week now. Didn't play around with the headset but am calling myself every now and then to check if the earpiece still works
Must say it's a little worrying reading about this issue. I guess the advice ought to be to simply avoid using the headphones socket! Out of the question for some perhaps, but I would point out that bluetooth headphones/headsets are actually very affordable now. £20-£30 gets a fairly good pair of headphones, which will render this issue kinda harmless (if usage of the socket is indeed the culprit). Plus, who wants cables trailing out of their mobile phone anyway? Unless you absolutely need to use the onboard FM radio, you may as well just leave the 3.5mm socket alone, especially if there's a risk of breaking the earpiece speaker.
Despite this minor issue, I think the Defy is an awesome android phone, and highly recommended. Perhaps in the coming weeks Motorola will acknowledge this problem and sort it out completely - fixing the jack properly for future production, and maybe offering free bluetooth headphones to those who've bought a Defy with this weak socket/earpiece speaker issue (well it would only be fair, certainly cheaper than furnishing all early customers with new Defys... or would that seem to be a far-fetched dream? - help me out, I've no experience with Motorola's aftersales support! Lets hope they feel obliged to do the right thing for all of us who've decided to go for something a little different to the iphone/bberry/htc crowd)

I love the phone too, but we shouldn't have to work around problems like this. What's the point in having a jack if you can't use it?
Except I believe the radio (FM) will not work unless earphones are physically inserted because they act as antenna.

[Q] Use Gnex as ID card

I want to know if its possible to read my contactless work ID card with my phone and then use the phone as my ID by tapping it to the reader.
I don't know if this is even possible and my question isnt about the Nexus as much as it is about My ID card, but if anyone can help me figure out what kind of ID card I have and how that would or wouldnt work with the hardware in the Nexus, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
There is some sort of chip in your ID or is just a bar code you're trying to scan?

Some sort of chip. I tap the card to the reader in the elevator and at the front door to the office.
I don't even need to tap the card directly, I keep the card in my wallet and tap my wallet to the reader and it picks it up fine.
Let me know if I can provide any more info.
Thanks
I can't think of anyway to extract the information from the chip, but you could always cut the chip out and tape it inside the battery door. I wouldn't think anything would interfere with the chip, but I guess would might need to have an undamaged ID card.

Yeah, that wouldn't work, it doubles as a picture ID as well so I would need to keep it undamaged.
I've seen apps that read and store data when tapped with a credit card, so I was hoping someone would be able to provide similar info for how to do it with an ID card. I don't know enough about the different NFC and RFID technologies and what the nexus is capable of. Was hoping someone on here might be able to help.
Check out this thread from a few months ago. People came to the conclusion that it isn't possible.

From what I understand, data that's on most RFID cards is encrypted and the NFC antenna on the Galaxy Nexus (and Nexus S) is not currently capable of interpreting the data. It certainly seems that the possibility is there though seeing as how they usually operate on the 13.56 MHz frequency.

I posted this on another thread, but I think it is worth it here also. HID is beta testing using NFC technology for card access with Blackberry devices. Youtube HID Global Pilot Arizona State. NFC uses 13.56Mhz frequency. The HID iClass readers should work ONCE HID gives the customer the ability to get the software used to tether the phone to your computer and connect to the "secure" part of the Android OS and create a credential. It is coming. Just waiting on HID Global to make it happen.

Harrier and Blue Angel - twins or cousins?

As we′ve lately discussed the question if HR has got a built-in wifi-device similar to BA I'm starting this thread in close connection to D-Two's Android for Blue Angel-Thread. Hoping to have some Harrier at hand pretty soon, built-in parts will be listed.
Right from the start my thanks go to GnatGoSplat!

I saw in your other thread about adding an external bluetooth into a BA. That's yet another difference, Harrier has built-in GPS.

EDIT: ok i think this chip is the real different!!
datasheet this chip is for GPS and CDMA...
I haven't taken it apart to see the chip, but yes, I think it does have an MSM5500 inside from what I could find on Google, and that chip does have the GPS and CDMA included so I'm sure that must be it.

ok, so we need for the harrier a linux driver for the chip and the harrier is fully work :victory:

O.K.- scanning had been a stupid idea- those modern machines don't give a sharp&deep enough pic.
Now made several photos of unshielded BA & Harrier mainboard. Will upload tomorrow.
For first two pics, didn't have good light yesterday evening.
Interesting: Harriers' GPS-antenna is placed where BA has bluetooth; harriers' bluetooth is next to IR.
The area under black foil is for simcard-holder.
Flashlight of harrier can't be built in BA, has got two spiral contacts on motherboard.
The board layout is surprisingly different for looking so similar on the outside.
Are any parts the same and interchangeable? LCD maybe?
