Rough hack to convert Optimus G to Nexus 4 (NEWS and Early results) - LG Optimus G (International)

Hope this excites people!
So far it's early, and it can only do 8 GB and no LTE from what's seen. With the hardware being similar it seems like a easier conversion that most.
It's almost a truism to say that the Nexus 4 is near impossible to buy, at least for those who don't want to pay a carrier premium. G33k3r, Rohan32 and others at XDA-Developers may just save us from camping at the Google Play storefront through a new software hack. Their work converts an LG Optimus G's firmware to that of an 8GB Nexus 4 by swapping every LG-customized software element with a Nexus 4 parallel. The nearly identical hardware makes for a very close rendition, at least if you discount the unavoidable design differences. If anything, the work is almost too faithful: the current hack turns off LTE, caps the internal storage at 8GB and even requires using Nexus 4 firmware for future upgrades. It's possible to revert to LG's code if there's jitters, but it goes without saying that the overall procedure carries more than the usual share of risk when even familiar ROM flashers are warned to be careful. Anyone who throws caution (and the price of an Optimus G) to the wind can find their stock Android experience at the source.

PLEASE DONT DO IT!!! YOU will perma BRICK!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36735476&postcount=149

THis is obviously a hack, and will definitely be improved if completely true for release and also tweaked. So yes, ofc it's been known you cannot do a direct flash of the hack, I suggest ppl wait for a new release or more confirmation.
Thanks

would not advise

My question is more why would one want to transfrom his/her E971/E973 into a nexus 4 when you can run nexus 4 rom natively* ? This give you less functionnality than having the stock rom installed and it's pretty stupid to accept 8GB storage when you can have 32.
*Roms must be flashed with by-name in updater script and not with partition number. The kernel must be modified to change a few that were changed for nexus 4. User experience may vary. Please be cautious if you plan on flashing nexus 4 roms, overwriting rpm partition (mmcblk0p7) with something else will end in a perma brick. I can't be held responsible for any damage.

Pretty sure it is only for the E970 (the LS970s can do it too, but it hasn't been released for it).
Right now the E970s can't flash anything but their own kernels and haven't been able to get any non LG based ROMS completely functional yet.
I believe it is too much to lose/too risky, but others just want the ROMs.

this is super exciting. a working radio, camera, and storage would be super

Gn vs droid razr

Hey guys I have a question for you users of the GN... have any of you went from a RAZR to it? How does everything work? I know it has ICS and I am dying to get it on my RAZR, but I was just wondering if you guys can help me decide on which phone to either keep or if i should get the GN?
I own both, I prefer the gnex, much much better development support, and IMO more fun to use.

can you elaborate? I'm an android noob (iPhone convert) and never have rooted, etc on my android phones...
The GNex is much more hacker friendly which allows you to work with the OS of the phone. Motorola has a reputation of locking their phones down like fort knox so you cant mess with the internals.
So what are some good things about like rooting and roms? Like I said.. NOOB

One way to look at it is when Google builds Android they build it for the Nexus models. Then they release the code, the other manufactures then modify the code to work with their hardware.
Now since you are on the Verizon version they modify google's code for their network so you would not have the 100% pure code, only about 98%. It would be purer than Motorola's build.
Also the Razor is a closed platform hardware wise. This is a really good video about the Razor. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/droid-razr-unboxed-the-xda-way-xda-tv/
I think I'm gonna try the nexus

Rooting (completely different from jail-breaking), allows the user to run super user commands on their cell phone. Super user commands and apps generally have much more access to system files, allowing for overclocking (if the kernel supports it), free wifi tethering, and so on. Unlocking the bootloader allows for flashing custom ROMs on the device. Flashing can be done on a locked device, but no kernels (hence no overclocking) can be flashed. This also causes custom ROMs without their own kernel to generally be less stable than those for an unlocked bootloader device. Rooting is necessary for any Android power user, though a bootloader unlock may not always be necessary. Custom kernels often provide massive boosts to performance and add new features, so it is strongly recommended.
Thanks that helps a ton!!! That's the answer I was needing

I have both as of this minute and I will sell one of them soon. I prefer the gnex but damn does it poor signal compared to my razor.
I don't even have service on my gnex in areas that I have 2 bars on my razor.
I just flashed leaked radios on my gnex and it didn't help. I only use 3g as no 4g at home yet.
I will prob keep the gnex though and hope for a signal fix cause the gnex is faster and just a nicer phone IMO.
...radios? your on the verizon nexus right? arent the leaked radios just for the sprint phones?
The Nexus line is Google's own idea of what an Android device should be; they are the ONLY handsets that are supported directly by Google. Consequently, Nexus phones have an Apple-like software support cycle (say what you want about Apple, the 3GS got iOS 5 before my Droid Charge even got Gingerbread) and huge dev support. Keep in mind that a Nexus phone is never designed to push the bleeding edge; it may have some neat new features, but they're never designed to be powerhouses (some say the N1 was, but IMO it was just in the right place at the right time). A Nexus device is the bone stock Android experience, an exemplar to the rest of the manufacturers on just what an Android device should be.
To summarize:
1.) The absolute best official software support you can get in the Android world, and among the best 3rd party dev support. While some devices released this year will be lucky to get ICS and/or Jelly Bean, you can pretty much rest assured that the GNex will go well into Key Lime Pie officially.
2.) Internal hardware chosen for STABILITY and EFFICIENCY, rather than bleeding edge, untested (and usually buggy) performance. That said, while it isn't cutting edge, the GNex has very solid hardware, and performance is always snappy and smooth.
3.) Usually has some neat perks that most other phones don't have. In the Gnex's case, it's the BEAUTIFUL 720p AMOLED+ display, NFC support, the ultra-fast camera, and of course Ice Cream Sandwich.
After using a plethora of other non-Nexus Android devices, I got absolutely fed up with the apathy that the manufacturers and carriers have toward updating their handsets. The last straw was, as I mentioned, my Droid Charge. Even though Verizon considered it the flagship 4G LTE phone well into last September, it was released with an out-of-date OS to begin with (Froyo; GB had been out for well over half a year already). It didn't get GB until after it had been replaced as a flagship phone, and then was (and remains) ineligible for an update to ICS even though ICS was released only six months after the Charge was released! What the hell is that!?
Never again. Nexus or bust. Trust me, you'll be happy with the GNex.
This helps me a ton.. trying to trade now

[Q] Few questions before I buy Note 2

Hello friends,
I am considering to buy a Note 2 to replace my main device as Sensation's touchscreen failed upon me.
I have few questions and I will appreciate your valuable replies.
1. Is Note 2 hardware good enough for next 2 years? I don't play much games and mostly Subway Surfer, Real Racing, MC4. Maybe half hour a month. But I want to be able to run all upcoming Android versions (atleast till developers support this device).
2. I read about SDS somewhere few months before. Is every Note 2 affected? I can't afford to have an expensive paper weight.
3. Does Note 2 have some dual-boot kernel?
4. Any ROM with Note 3 features esp that circle popup thing (or its my wishful thinking ) ?
5. Otherwise which would be recommended Custom Stock ROM, Recovery and kernel (dual-boot is definitely preferred)?
6. Any other major hardware bugs?
7. Btw, could someone guide me as how to check if I decide to buy my friend's old Note 2? How I check it for faults esp hardware? I am getting tempted as I could save some good money for other accessories
If there is something else which hasn't come to my mind but is important please feel free to add. I would be much obliged
Thank you so much !!!

1. Im fairly sure the phone will be extrwmwly adequate 2 years from now (obviously no one knows for sure) but the quad core processor is very capable of playimg the ges you mention. Although there are devices out that already have octo core processors, they all are only usong 4 at any one time and the differences are bare noticable at best.
2. As long as you are getting your phone from an authorized dealer then you shouldnt worry about SDS as that comes with older models and should come with a warrenty that would allow for replacement (one way or another)
3. The guy that built the (either S2 or S3) dual boot kernal was receiving donations to help him fund the tools to make it back in Jan-Mar of this year and I havent heard anything since... nor have I seen anything about it anywhere (atleast not on TMO LTE version. Youre more than welcome to search around a bit yourself)
4. Yes and No... there is but Team E (or whoever) has certain restrictions (really just permission only use) on alot of the Note 3 features that have been made for the Note 2... not really stone walling development, just protecting their hardwork and asking for proper credits, no alterations without reporting back to them, etc... it will be in every new rom eventually
5. Really a matter of who you ask and personal preference. I myself love Ptmr3s Jedi series (Master for TMO WiFi calling or X for other Note 2) but thats because 4.4 isnt out and I love the functionality that TW has for the particular device (samsung hasnt open sourced their SPen, MultiWindow, etc) so theyre not on non-TW BASED roms.. if you prefer AOSP, AOKP, or Paranoid Andriod, or PACMAN, etc than there are carious roms to pick and choose from. As for Kernal... each rom will provide (or users will post kernals that are compatible (I.e. dont use just any kernal on any rom... only what has been tested and proven).
6. Nothing major that isnt morw than an isolated incident at best... obviously of roms are newer or in nightly stages there will be bugs but nothing really hardware related... should mention sometimes on calls, the person your talking to will here themselves (echo) but that is sorta sparatic at best and most roms its not that bad and nothing major (again not really hardware related)
7. eMMC bug checker app. Download from play store, (look up the thread on here) and it will show you what to look for
Hope this helps...
Ultimately the Note should be continued to be developed for some time and able to withstand another 2 years of updates and new handsets. Already have 4.4 on TMO (omnirom - though not a daily driver) and carriers are pushing out stock 4.3 ASAP

Thank you for detailed reply.
So if I am buying new deice I wouldn't have that SDS bug. Right?
I am little surprised (and disappointed) that a powerful device like Note 2 doesn't have dual-boot functionality. That way I could run both Stock (I love various TW functionalities) and AOSP/AOKP/PA, etc
Could you plz provide link or name of the ROM with Note 3 features? Does it have that circle thing?

In my country we don't have carrier thing. We have to buy devices at full price
Find out the model of the note 2 amd visit that particular xda thread for further info on uograded custom roms amd updates... also (in case you dont know better... dont flash a rom designed for a dofferwmt device (model number) unless you know what to do.. youll lose cell service and have a bunch of stuff to do just to fix it (some people have ecpensive paper weights)

Yes it's working verry good. I am using DN3 as we speak and it's a daily driver for me. The rom does not have yet note 3 camera and have a few minor bugs but nothing serious.
For me is as if a bot a note 3 and next update of the rom was anounced allready by the developers.

I think you guys are being a bit melodramatic. You have a perfectly functional tablet that doesn't have any outwardly obvious bugs or other problems. I bet you use it with no problems. Sure, it's nice to have the latest update, but it's not like you have significantly outdated software that limits your usage of the tablet. And should 4.4 land on this tab (for the record, I think it will), you guys will be happy for all of about 5 minutes and move on with your day. And of course as soon as a new minor update drops, the *****fest will begin again.
I am running custom build 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S4. Outside of some UI tweaks and ART, it brings nothing significant to the table.

There are many reasons why HTC is failing, but if this is even a reason, it's an insignificant one. Samsung has never been truly up to date on updates, yet they are second only to Apple in the amount of high-end devices sold. Most people, myself included don't really care whether we are on the latest version. We just care that our devices perform well and do what we need them to do. I only complain if an update screws something up.
And lets be honest here: you are running the latest version of all of the Google Apps. It's not like you are stuck on Gingerbread and being on Jelly Bean does not limit you in any way. KitKat will not boost your battery life, will likely not make your device faster, and does not add any significant features that would make a difference in your usage of the device. So what's the real issue? Because it's not that you are unhappy with your tablet.

I wish that was the case but it's not. I'm on the AT&T variant, and I'm still on 4.1.2. I have screen freezes (real and documented) and battery life isn't great. With that said, I haven't piled on the *****fest. But no matter what, this device really needs to get upgraded. I blame AT&T more than Sammy, but there is no reason why I should still be on 4.1.2 with a device that was announced in June 2013 with absolutely no word on when we'll get an update (either to 4.2, 4.3, or KK). That's pretty shameful. And with no releases of any kinds of source code or device info, we have no unlocked bootloader or custom ROMs. So, I'm basically on 2013 hardware with 2012 code.

I fully understand your concern. I have the Wifi-only tab and am on 4.2. I did not experience your issues with 4.1 but I do know that others have. The thing is, problems have to get fixed, and it's a shame that you are still dealing with them. I don't know if it's AT&T or Samsung in your case that's at fault though. My point was more to the effect that I don't care for software updates just for the sake of having a slight bump in version number.

Agreed. I am on the At&t Note 8.0 variant also and I too have freezes and lag. With that being said I know that At&t and Samsung don't have the best business relationship dye At&t loyalty to Apple. I got wifi only and I get freezes. The way to unfreeze is to turn the orientation of the note to landscape from horizontal and vice versa. I really wish for an update to fix that. And Yes htc has tons of problems but I believe the slow ass updates were the biggest driver of their customers (at least those who root their devices) to Samsung. Those people are also quite influential with their peers on recommendations

Android L on the LG G pad

Let's be honest we all want the latest android but will LG update this tab that's less than a year old to Android L.
Or would you actually prefer to get a custom rom of Android L and get closer to vanilla android anyway. Thoughts? Comments? Leaks?
Sent from my LG-V500 using XDA Free mobile app
I doubt they will update...just a feeling. I would love to update to vanilla or aosp based ROM, but ultimately I need access to the GRemote app, so will probably stick with modified stock. If anyone gets the remote working with AOSP (I've tried the apk's on xda already), I'm flashing a vanilla-ish ROM asap.
I really wish that the device producers would unlock the device if the decision had been made to discontinue support. Granted it isn't too hard to get a custom recovery for this device, but I still wish it was standing policy to let the developers completely loose after a certain amount of time had passed on the devices... An unlocked bootloader after they discontinue support would be nice!
Now, to be on topic... I think we have a better than 50% chance to see an official L on the V500 and I hope we do.
the v510 will mostlikely get android L so there will be v500 custom rom android L versions
Trouble is lg rom while it has good features is terrible to use compared to stock android and I can't see them doing a good job with android L. They basically copy Samsung. For this reason I'm much happier with a custom rom. Just wish manufacture's would leave android alone. It doesn't need their help.

I think if the GPE gets updated to Lollipop, we have a chance of getting an official update as LG will get the new kernel code or something like that! The gpe is already being updated to 4.4.4. Let's hope we also get it as it fixes heartbleed and other security issues
It's really good that we are getting official little updates for our tablets which is way much better than any other tablets which more often than not will never get an update
This might be a little easier than a port androidpolice.com/2014/07/01/android-l-preview-source-code-going-live-aosp-includes-support-nexus-4-5-7-2013-10/?a=1
I got mixed feelings regarding the matter... On one hand, it should provide a better, smoother experience overall. However from what I heard, its using the ART as the default runtime... Not sure if they will still have the dalvik as an optional RT (logically it should as most apps are still incompatible with ART). Hopefully the devs make their apps compatible, or that the L have an optional Dalvik RT to maximize compatibility.
That said, I am wondering. if there is a way to use ART on one app and Dalvik on another app at the same time... Probably not.
The new version of ART is backwards compatible with dalvik apps. They won't get the benefits in performance from the new runtime, but all apps should work.

That's comforting to know. The only downside I see to this is that developers might see little reason to make their app "ART-ified" because its backwards compatible anyway. Either way, the new interface, though beta, sure looks purty. Ofcourse OEM's will find a way to mess it up. Excited to test out the first custom roms that will come out of it.
I think that will be update to Android L (if it start officialy at the end of year) due 18 months policy update, but it will be last.

Unencryption: what will it change ?

Hi ! I'm thinking about buying a 5X instead of a 6P for several reasons but i read that 5X is slower that the 6P due to encryption. I also read that 5X needs to be unencrypted to get custom roms etc, and it will also be faster.
I have 2 questions then:
- Will it be as fast as 6P ?
- What unencryption will change in the security of the device ? Is it an unsecure thing ?
Thank you !
Likely not as fast as the 6P which has a faster cpu (810 vs 808) and more ram (3 gigs ddr4 vs 2 gigs ddr3).
Both of the phones come stock with encryption.
You can be encrypted and install custom roms as i believe the system partition is not encrypted just the data/sd card partitions. It does make it more challenging as your custom recovery (TWRP) may not be able to read the SD Card but you could either flash using sideload or install the rom and then re-enable encryption after? Finger prints will always be stored on a separate location on the phone and always encrypted.

Likely not as fast as the 6P which has a faster cpu (810 vs 808) and more ram (3 gigs ddr4 vs 2 gigs ddr3).

Actually, i want to remove encryption because when i see video like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9y4pKV3bS7c i'm really afraid to get a 5X... Same for this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt_WJGL7SiA WTF !
With no encryption i just hope that the speed of the phone can compete with a 6P and a 5 2013. Finger print sensor needs encryption to work ?

I'm interested too abt the last thing u asked.
If the unencryption is necessary for the modding (like unlocking the bootloader, rooting and flashing other roms) will the fingerprint sensor work?
In my old Samsung S6 the fingerprint sensor worked after flashing other roms...
I hope cuz I bought the N5X for the modding but I don't want to loose this function...

I am using unencrypted and rooted stock rom. Fingerprintreader works, but my current rom isn't much faster than stock rom. Everyting is smooth, but loading times are not so good. I read that custom roms are faster, but didn't tried one yet.

Crap...if the 5X is almost 2 times lower than a 6P or a Nexus 5 i don't understand the purpose of this Nexus. I don't understand how is it possible that it's slower than a Nexus 5 with a better hardware...
The perfect thing would be a speed test with a unencrypted 5X against the others.
I'm so afraid of buying this 5X now...

I dont understand all of the comparison videos between performance on a 5X vs 6P vs 5 vs 6. Using it daily its smooth with the uber rom/kernel i have no lagging sluggishness. I have a nice dark theme with layers and am perfectly content.
Usually as soon as i get a new nexus (have had nexus s, nexus 4,5 and now 5x). Enable OEM unlocking. Unlock boot loader install custom recovery. At this step if you wipe data you will be running unencrypted marshmallow (google requires encryption by default for all phones running 6.0).
Personally i am running the DespairFactor's uber rom and phasma kernel (under the Original Nexus 5X Development section). I personally find it to be smoother than stock a little bit better battery life etc. Most of the hardware is comparable to the Nexus 5 hardware; if you have a working N5 without issues maybe skip the 5X and wait for next years hopefully with the snapdragon 820 when Qualcomm finally gets there SoC in order. Personally i know that with the LG hardware it will be a fairly durable phone and with the lovely XDA community for all things nexus the optimization will come. Its been 2 months and there are already a handful of kernels and roms with their own flavour's that ive been impressed with (ive used Pure, Cataclysm and now UBER).
If you are looking for a 5 inch phone sometime before 2016 id grab a 5X but thats me.

Finger print sensor data is stored on an encrypted part of the phone. The encrpytion you can enable disable is for your Data partition. You can not turn off encryption on the finger print sensor; you will not lose this function (unlike other phones i think the One Plus 2 has modding issues with fingerprint but i have had zero finger print issues with the 3-4 roms ive used so far).

I actually have a Nexus 4 which was very good (and i still love it) but begin to die (very poor battery life, no 4G here in France, bad camera) so yes, i'd like to change now for a smartphone but the fastest smartphone possible (so that's why i choose Nexus and that's also why i create this thread, i want to be sure to get the fastest device i can).
Actually i think i'm gonna buy the 5X and will love it, can't wait one more year, but the 6P looks faster and that make me hesitate (but i don't want a phablet...)
That's why i'm asking about encryption, i wanted to know if we can increase the speed of the device to get a Nexus experience at least as good as the Nexus 5's.
About the community, i've made strange finiding: there's about 3x more thread and posts in each section of 6P's forum than 5X's... :/

The 6p is a more powerful phone no questions (faster cpu and more ram) but the 5x is the right size for me so the 6p never crossed my mind.
The battery in the 5x while just a touch bigger than original nexus 5 the optimizations (doze) in the new os make it last longer. As far as xda community i think some of the devs are popping up in both 5x and 6p so should have decent support.
I believe if you purchase from google you have a 2 week period to return the phone if you don't like it. I believe some have purchased both 5x and 6p and returned the one that doesnt auit their needs. I have no idea how challenging that may be in the eu

Well that's a great news for me.
Thanks!

I've noticed no performance difference between encrypted or unencrypted on this phone.
And the 6P IS faster(I had both for two weeks). Fastest, smoothest phone I have ever seen. But I never looked forward to holding it in my hand.
Do you mean there is a noticeable difference between the two in terms of smoothness ? You start to worry me ^^
And if you don't see any difference between encrypted and unencrypted, i still don't understand why the old Nexus 5 is 1.5 time faster than 5X...
