Are all Tmo S4's made in China? possibility that Google Edition wil also be China? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just wondering if the experience with all Tmo S4 owners so far if their handsets are all made in China or are there some that were korean made?
Just read that the Google Edition will likely be a modified Tmo edition.
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s4-nexus-t-mobile-212316/
If the above holds true then that means the Google Editions will also be China made.
I originally bought 2 AT&T S4's one white 16gb and a black 32gb, both are korean made.
I returned the white (launch date unit) due to 1 dead pixel and some cosmetic flaws, miss-aligned camera bezel and raised earpiece trim.
so far the black 32gb is perfect.
I am thinking of replacing the returned white 16gb with a google edition. But weighing my Pros can Cons.
I've read that the pure nexus software will not have support for Air Gestures (since it's a part of touchwizz) and likely other features samsung added in. That's a CON for me.
the China vs. Korea is also a CON, in the past I've owned a Korean Note GT-N7100 and my parents had 2 China made AT&T notes, upon careful inspection, the fit and finish was better on my Korean made unit (not sure why my white s4 was bad though)
Nexus software is PRO, due to the fact there is no bloat and will have more available space on the 16gb model.
Unlocked and working LTE on both Tmo and ATT is a PRO... easier resale, and more flexibility moving between carriers.
Let me know what you guys think and if your unit is China or Korea.
Thanks.

This made in China is bad is bull..no issues with the China made S4. They all go through the same quality inspection so should be same.

If only that were true, and here come all the stories about samsung using under-aged labor in China, if they can't stay honest about the age of their labor who's to say they will uphold the same level of QC as the factory in Korea?
I am skeptical, but who knows, if there are more reports the korean made units I might be swayed.
as a matter of fact I am enjoying my Korean made black 32gb just fine at the moment :good:
just on the edge if I should go Google Edition for my other S4 for my other line.

Same with fake boobies. All that really matters is the end result NO? QC matters to me and that is all. Now my wife is asian also. I'm just partial to atttractive women period.

I personally feel the OP is thinking too much. $649 price tag means it's the exact same s4 but with a Google stamp. Everything will be the same whereas the software may be different.

AT&T fortress coming Aug 24 ... any truth?

I just read this one from htc blogger. Does anyone know if this has any truth to it? I have to know and need to get one before my Sept trip.
http://htcblogger.com/2009/07/08/htc-fortress-warhawk-to-be-released-by-att-in-august/
hmmm interesting find...
there may be some truth to this, taking into consideration the fact that another member in another thread got some information that the TP2 would be coming out 6-8 weeks after the iPhone 3G S comes out.
however, if that rumor is true, and this article as well, then that means that it got pushed back a little.
no one can really tell you if it's 100% true or not, sorry. but it seems plausible.
The touch pro 2 should come out a week or two around the time of the tmobile release which is scheduled 12 august. So seems plausible.
If that happens the question would be:
Wich one of the 2 (att&t or tmob) will have the less ugly version?
If is the one on the pic I think At&t will win...
p.s Did I read well??
WM 7 refresh awarded with sept 09 launching date???
Mmmmmm...... not sure about that...........
No way.......
Please say it ain't so that the pic of that Fortress is the actual/final product. If so then I think I'm gonna jump ship to Tmo because At&t just screwed up one of the biggest selling points for me. I loved the offsetted keyboard and the spaciousness of the layout, even though the color wasn't at all appealing, I'd still be able to stomach it as long as they didn't mess with the original layout too much. I really hope thats not the final product. BTW, I've been wondering, who came up with these names for Att? It feels like either they let kids do it or they just put a bunch of names in a hat and pic one.

from the rumors i've read WM7 requires capacitive screens. and more powa then the TP2 has on tap. Ala snapdragon or tegra.
i still get the funny notion WM7 has been ready for awhile now and is based off of Windows 7, and MS has just been waiting for the hardware to catch up.
i agree with you about the ugly contest. so far i think Sprint has the best looking version (besides stock)

The only part that doesn't smell right to me is that we still haven't seen the ATT version in the flesh, just the hackish and apparently outdated promo QWERTZ numpad version from who knows when. I get that ATT is full-tilt iPhone-obsessed, but if we were that close to release, I'd still think we'd have seen some real life pics from it the way we have for sprint, verizon and tmo.

I actually like the look of sprint better than the european unlocked version. That chrome just seems like unnecessary shiny for a business class device.

These pics have been out since late May from engadget. It would be usual for T-Mobile to launch their ver in late July and att launch theirs in August. Typically, there is a six-month gap for exclusivity on new products, but given today’s market$ who knows.

No one bought exclusivity for the TP2.
looks like Telstra Next G in Australia will be out before AT & T for an 850 UMTS/WCDMA Touch Pro 2. July 22nd is the date
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/07/six-new-nextg-phones-unveiled/
I just hope that old Fortress pic from Engadget's not the final product. Please, oh lawd.
the warhawk looks way better than the fortress.... hell its way sexier than the gsm version as well
the spreadsheet was leaked will most likely NOT be the final product. ATT has a history of messing with their phones' hardware, but I don't think they'll make that mistake here.
and i've heard of an august 17 release date and an august 24th release date, so it seems like it really will be coming out a week or 2 after T-MO's

yea it would work but ATT runs mostly on 1900 and they are expanding their 850...its better to have both. i guess 850 is better than nothing right.
ATT usually mess up on their Keyboard but we always learn to adapt and make good use of it...one thing though they keep the original exterior design ala tilt minus front camera and ala Fuze eith the diamond battery case and all...
i rather they have the same exterior design and ill adapt to the keyboard rather then they change it like Tmobile did (it looks cheap with the 4 buttons sticking out) and spring change their touch pro as well which i dont like...
just my opinion
God i hope the fortress' keyboard isnt red. How gay is that. Its a business phone for gods sake.

Is my T-Mobile Note 2 refurbished? Please let me know what you think. Thank you.

I received my Note 2 a few days ago. I found no screen defects, although my volume button is loose (and was confirmed normal as per other XDA member's feedback). I have a tiny black marker above the earpiece on the bezel (also confirmed by another fellow XDA member), and I know it sounds like I have OCD, but $700 dollars is not little. Also, I should mention, I purchased my device without contract from T-Mobile on their website, and the retail box (pristine clean condition) came in a bubble wrapped bag instead of an actual box I was expecting. Lastly, while un-boxing, I noticed I didn't find any plastic clear tape to remove on the sides of the bezel like I did in the previous Note (International version). My Note 2 only came with the T-Mobile Logo on front and Plastic on the back cover. Today, I tried registering the product on Samsung's website, and came across the message that my phone's Manufacture Date is 11/30/1993.
Is whatever I described above something to be concerned about? Or am I just being too anal. What about the warranty? Is my device refurbished? Should I have purchased at a retail store instead? My phone apparently came from Kentucky (Origin on UPS Scan shows Louisville, Kentucky) with a pre-paid return label to Forth Worth, Texas.
Relax..... That's not a refurbished device. You can check under the battery and it will be listed as a refurb.
I had 3 Note 2's with Sprint before moving here. They all came the same way. There's no tape on the sides of the phone. Only the screen and and back cover are protected by plastic.

I have purchased 2 notes from tmobile and they have both come in a padded mailer vs. an actual box. The inside boxes were sealed though, I had to slice through seals to open the box. I recall on the international version the back plastic actually wraps around a little to cover the sides, I think it was the same with the tmobile version as well. You can't rule it out entirely but it seems unlikely you got a refurb, in my opinion.
Thanks for the replies :good:, what about the power / volume button, little black mark, and most importantly, the manufacture date. Have any of you tried registering your devices yet? Please let me know. Thanks again.

Do you even have to ask? Consider the source, the world we live in for a moment. The fact is some devices are sold "New" even if they technically need be listed as refurb. If you feel so confused, instead of asking internet strangers about your own device, I'd return it online and buy one in store if it makes you feel any better. But at the end of the day it's just a cell phone

I'm not feeling confused; its really just the manufacturer date I am more concerned about. It might be just a cell phone to you, but $700 dollars invested into a machine like this is not little. The world we live in now requires most of us to think twice before we buy. Coming to the Note 2, Every Note 2 sold has minute issues like I stated in my first post. I might be just being OCD, lol. Also, It's a Samsung thing--QC at its finest.

As far as the device heck yeah return it and buy in store if it tickles your fancy, our see a doctor about your ocd. In regards to the manufacturer date..this is not the first nor last gadget to have a funky date some are more accurate others are internal...not a big deal.....this technology clearly didn't even exist back then, uncommon sense tells you it's just a Samsung filler, just a date they used. OP MADE IN CHINA is all you have to see to answer your questions about loose this or that . This isn't the first thread I've seen about loose buttons on this device. . China makes junk , period. But chinese quality control just isnt on par with even korea or the phillipines.
Thanks AFAIK, everyone's buttons on the Note 2 are loose, even those Made in Korea (as per XDA Note 2 General Forum Members). I've had the Made in Korea Note and Galaxy S2 before and they both sucked in quality control and were Made in Korea. Its not country of manufacture, its Samsung and their best friend, Plastic. I've noticed quality issues on the Note 2, notably the bezel. The bezel is a throwback to the GS2 with the cheap electroplated plastic. Too easy to scratch, and out of the 3 or 4 I have had, most of them suffered from some sort of manufacturing defect. The GS3s bezel is actually constructed much beter, and I was hoping it would be the same. Instead it's identical to the Note 1 or the GS2.
I wonder how Samsung is able to sell something like this of very poor build quality. It's very shocking and insulting.
Very poor build quality? I have to disagree with you on that. They are built different, lots of plastic that's all. As far as I know anyway. My 3rd Galaxy phone model, and 4th total. I've never had an issue with any of them. However, for $700 I'd expect perfection regardless of where it's made. If you aren't happy definitely contact them.

What are you even talking about??
I've gone through a few Note 2s now (long story), but all of them arrived in a very thin bubblewrap bag, and had the back plastic wrap on loose/wrinkled/something. I'm not sure why that happens, but they were all new and unused. One had a power button that didn't work right, the other had a deep nick on the side (ironically, near the power button) - and that was painted so it was definitely a defect, and then another one had a bad speaker.
The 4th still doesn't sound quite as good as I recall the 1st sounding, but everything otherwise is great and fine so I'm sticking with that one.
Also, I think the front edge of the ring that goes around the sides of the phone has paint that chips, possibly? I think those with the white Note 2s could provide more info about that, because I also see tiny black specs there sometimes, but I can't tell if it's dirt/dust or just the paint, or what? It's really hard to tell since the grey ones are painted really dark hehe.
Awesome phones though!
Also noting: All of these were made in China, and one says rev 1.1 on the box and had a slightly clickier home button (made on 12/3 I think?) but all were virtually identical otherwise. They're really nice phones, just.. not HTC or Apple quality hardware-wise I guess.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 Made in China

Just got my SGS4 from T-Mobile and I haven't even unboxed it yet. But I noticed that the box says "Phone Made in China." I've seen quite a few unboxing videos for the AT&T and Sprint versions and the box said the phone was made in Korea. I guess it doesn't really matter where the phone is made, but I found it interesting that there is a possibility that phones for different carriers are made in different countries.
Too bad! I rather have phones made in Korea rather than China! For some reasons, China makes the phone feel cheaper.
Yep, my S4 was made in China as well... Perhaps this explains the massive amounts of availability on T-mobile?
The proof is in the pudding, but as a general rule I don't trust the Chinese as much as I do South Koreans.

On a different note, I noticed that the upper front of the screen gets uncomfortably warm at times.

Hey to all the early S4'ers, before this forum get's HUGE!
Yea sucks to have it say Made in China, but for what it's worth, it's still made by Samsung China division.
There's no doubt there are sometimes quality issues, although small with phones made in China vs S.Korea which are superior.
Either way...be happy..it's all good.

Samsung outsourcing to China is just typical corporate business model. Its probably just more economic business sense to supply the material to the abundant and specifically designed electronics factories in China, and then pay what is probably a substantially lower wage to the readily available Chinese worker than they would to the South Korean. They are highly westernized in South Korea with an economy not unlike ours here in America and that's not to mention the business and goods China is probably throwing back into South Korea...its a corporate to government handshake and doesn't in any way signify an inferior quality in the product. Rest assured that the quality control would have to be just as strict in the Chinese plants to ensure the brand premium that Samsung represents and requires.

Auto adjust screen tone or auto brightness? Also, you might want to check Adapt Display (don't know if that's an app or setting), but I believe it's supposed to automatically adjust brightness depending on the app you're using. That's my guess.
me too

Turn off your Adapt Display mode. It's there to change the look based on the type of media you're looking at, be it photos, videos, web browsing, etc. It's not a problem.

I all ready have and it still happens....

Wow....overkill.

Anyone else not a fan of how Samsung is on overdrive with the different models, colors and variants of our S4 so quickly after the initial release? It's a little insulting. I know it happened with the S3, to an extent, but over a much longer timeframe... You buy the phone when it is released only to find out that now, less than 3 months after its release, there are multiple models and even talk of an advanced 4G LTE model with updated snapdragon 800 inside. I understand that it's essentially impossible to have the newest, bleeding-edge cell phone, but to release an "updated model" less than a few months after the initial release is a huge slap in the face.
The new colors and the active weren't a big shocker to me since I'd rather have a good screen and specs than a bit more durable device. The mega wasn't much to me either but the S4 Advanced is.. Even though tmobile barely just got lte now it wouldn't have too much function besides the new process but still.. Id like to have some safety in buying something new and not having buyers remorse for not waiting for the next best thing so soon.

I want a device that gives me a sense of security of having the top support. For Samsung to immediately dump us like this could be their weakest point. I just bought it a week ago and to hear something new may be coming just pisses me off. No wonder I was considering apple

*shudder* no, my friend, you still chose wisely. The S4 is an amazing phone, and I love it. I'm mostly just making a comment on how I don't like the direction Samsung is going... They're getting very greedy and flooding the market with S4 labeled everything....it's a sure-fire way to turn people off to the brand. And if this advanced version comes to light and is released shortly, then this will be my last Samsung branded phone. I bought an S4 because I thought it would be Samsung's flagship top-tier smartphone, but apparently it is already obsolete after two months. This would be welcome if a competitor released a phone that wiped the floor with the S4, but to have the same manufacturer do it....that's simply a greedy, consumer-alienating move.
It almost feels like they're punishing the early adopters.
"See all the cool **** we could've put in your phone but chose not to?"
im really pissed about the s4 advanced. its a huge screw you to those of us who bought the phone in may. its only been what, a month and a half? Not to mention that us 16 gig users got especially boned. Isnt this rapid release cycle one of the contributing factors of htc's slow suicide? this may very well be the last samsung phone i buy. ive been eyeing the sony experia line for a while. Time to do some research
I might go with the iPhone

Really? Am I missing something? It's just a S4 with LTE Advanced which no carrier to date in the US has announced plans of rolling out yet. We are arguably leading the LTE rollout and our two largest carriers aren't even done with it yet, much less the #3 and #4 carriers. T-Mobile is the one that's best poised to go to LTE Advanced but I'd say they have enough on their hands finishing their LTE rollout.
Samsung has recently showed that with the S3, they are supporting their older platforms with the leaked (and should be soon to be official) release of 4.2.2.
Other than that, how does the S4 Advanced make the regular S4 obsolete in any way? Exactly how much faster is browsing going to be at anything over 10, 15, 20 mbps? I'd bet most of you guys aren't getting that on your home broadband connections.
As for the S4 Active and the different colors, well, there were a lot of rumors of the S4 active before it was released and really, the new colors should have been expected by early adopters.
I'm not saying what Samsung is doing is perfect but, let's be honest here, the release of the S4 Advanced changes nothing about the S4 being the fastest phone you can buy today. What else did they change that you guys feel so left out about? They changed the modem and it supports a technology that to my knowledge there are 11 cell sites somewhere in Russia use as an experiment. Haha, I'm sorry but I just don't get the concern.

you obviously havent heard about the snapdragon 800 being put in it, which makes our phone seem dated by years. there have already been reviews on the processor. And there saying that unlike phones that have been released in the last year-year in a half, you can see a big improvement in real world performance and smoothness.
Most of us are pissed off because if they would of said something about putting the snapdragon 800 in it in about a month, most if not all of us would of waited.
exasperating
I can't keep up with samsung too, when s3 came out I just bought my s2 couple of months ago which is really irritating, I have yet to enjoy the features of this awesome smart phone and next thing I knew my friends are buying s3 like it's going out of style..
The issue isn't a slight increase in browsing speed. Or even that the new snapdragon is a faster processor (although that's upsetting) . It's the principle of it. You don't release a product and then release an updated version of the same product barely two months later. It doesn't speak well of the company's loyalty to their consumers. Do you think anyone is going to rush out and buy any future phones from Samsung? No, because they've proven that within a month or so they will push out another "updated" version of the same phone. This wasn't meant to start an argument between the readers of these forums, it was simply my opinion of what I consider poor business practices of Samsung.

Do you really think it will be a big difference for real-world performance? So far the biggest factor in performance for the s4 seems to be software optimization.
Anyhow, I hear what you're saying. But, no matter what phone you buy these days, there is always a better one around the corner.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment.
People, we can spend our lives and money chasing the "next big shiny thing" if that's your deal...but let's be honest with ourselves - even with the S4 Advanced being a slightly more powerful model of our current GS4, the gap won't be enough to justify shelling out another 600+ bucks to buy the latest new phone IMO.
We can hate on Samsung all we want, but one thing I respect about the company is their willingness to continuously innovate - kinda like Google.
So long as the GS4 remains well supported (and T-Mobile finally releases the bloody update) - I've got no complaints. My GS4 is the tits, and I doubt I'll need a new phone for quite some time (want is another story entirely).

Say, what update referring to? Do you mean the US equivalent of the update they recently received in Europe? If so, yeah I want to check that out.
When I was on Sprint, we had a leak-God named Sextape. Sextape would very generously provide Odin files of new leaks, sometimes months before actual release. So far I haven't seen a Dev like that on the T-Mobile side of things.
But I'm still hoping to "meet"such a Dev.
You guys should already know this is going to happen. When you buy a new phone, there's always going to be a new one coming out. With the person saying they bought an s2 then s3 came out in few months. You should already know it was coming out, it happens every year. You don't buy a new phone after months of being released then complain about it when a new one came out

Yes, I'm referring to the International G4 update. There's a T-Mobile leak available, but from what I understand it's buggy.
I was on ET4G as well, and Sextape is awesome.
This argument seems moot. Do you even think T-Mobile would pick up the S4 Advance? I very highly doubt it. If what you really wanted was the "best", why not shell out the money for the international version with octa-core back in May? Because of the lack of LTE is my guess, but T-Mobile's LTE coverage is so sparse it seems pointless.
This variant will remain well supported into the future - as far as smartphone lifespans go. This is not the HTC One story. HTC kept releasing variants because there were crappy flaws and they couldn't get it right.
We all seem to be pretty well plugged into the rumor mill, so news and, based on history, the expectation of color variants should've been no surprise. And the Active has been known for quite some time. We are a "Want it now!" group which is why we couldn't even wait a month for the initial price drop.
If you really need the Snapdragon 800, you can still commanda premium for this phone on ebay to pay your way. But, I would think the development is going to be very sparse compared to this one - FAR fewer people will have that phone. Hell, right now we can run any rom from any carrier, plus the international 9505.

Would you rather not have the option? "Big improvement in real world performance and smoothness" - I just can't see how a 1.9Ghz quad core processor in a phone is holding you back.

Nothing has been released. There isn't even any talk about this phone being released in the US or even when it could be released. Exactly and korea is getting this first the u.s. will not see this until next year at the earliest. There are no advanced lte networks in place yet but guess who will be in the best shape for it....Tmobile because they have the newest lte equipment out there that there are using now across the country. So I am not mad at them it would have been a different story if it was coming now but it's still awhile before we see it. I am more pissed off about the lack of internal space and not being moving apps to sd card. Hope we get the same update to fix this soon like the intetnational model. That's my only beef right now.

I dont think the op is out to chase the next best thing but rather, the business aspect of samsung.
But hey, Lt advance, and w.e spec is being added to the phone doesn't really bother me if i dont have it. My phone is blazing fast. With AOSP/AOKP it runs faster than my finger can catch up because of the specs it currently have. Infamous manage to squeeze 5+ hours of battery life out of it and evil managed to make it as smooth as silk.
So I am not complaining , if i say I will be chasing the next best thing with my money as someone of you clearly have that mindset going on in here, I will be more broke than my two years old baby cousin. If not broke, will just walk around with that green envious eyes and no one got time for that, clearly im too lazy for that. It is differenty if you got the s2 than the s3 came out (the obvious difference in the phone is MINDBLOWING)
But from the s4 lt..to s4 lt advance, water proof s4, to w.e else s4 is out there...I'm good. I can still sleep at night knowing my phone is better than 7/8 of my whole block if it is about being satisfy with the next being thing.

Found this hands on video of the Galaxy fold. The app continuity when the guy plays YouTube is seamless. Also is it me or the speakers super clear and loud. Any thoughts about the video. Getting pretty excited about this phone.
I think that's the same pre production model that was in the other video as it has the test number in the back and a crease, but yeah it's definitely an exciting phone.
I can't wait until I get my hands on one!

Found another video. Looks like web browsing won't look to good when the phone is in the one hand configurations. Unless the person using the phone had it in desktop view.
I don't think there will be an issue with that. Apparently the issue reported on the testing handsets was when you switch from the external to internal display on Chrome. Plus, these are all older software and hardware than the final release models will be. And certainly nothing that can't be fixed with software updates.
If they're serious about the extra support Fold users will get, I'd imagine a faster update to Android 10 than they usually do. That has a lot of built in support for folding devices.

That would definitely be nice. I was able to reserve one. Unfortunately, it's only for At&t and Tmobile. I'm surprised Samsung didn't make unlocked devices for all U.S. carriers but they are probably producing such a limited amount of units they decided on GSM compatible networks. Also, I'm a little sad Samsung didn't do a Fold press event like they said they would. I thought the one they streamed on the 11th/12th would be about the Fold but it was just on the A70/ A80 series
Apparently, Samsung is releasing the Fold to the public and press because there are a lot of hands-on videos popping up on YouTube. Of course, this is after people pre-ordered them last night .

I just heard that AT&T paid $15 million to be an exclusive seller. As of now, no Verizon but who knows how long that will be. They got the 5G exclusive contract with Samsung anyway. I think that the US Carriers have a lot of influence on Samsung because they are willing to shell out so much money. Probably another reason that there is no Unlocked version. I'm surprised that AT&T only offers the Silver and Black colors. I'm glad I pre-ordered on Samsung.com so I could get Martian Green with a gold hinge.

That explains a lot .Yeah I heard also that you can only get the silver one in at TMobile. Well goes to show money talks ?. I was definitely disappointed since I'm on Verizon.
I've seen seemingly dozens of videos as well as read many first looks and so on. One thing that comes to mind is that somewhere I read that all sales will be carrier, no unlocked sales. Even the ones that Samsung let you reserve were AT&T or Tmo versions, not international unlocked so that one may be true. Sounds like E gets it for the UK, I've been trying to figure out if that one will have an unlocked bootloader...
