Can anyone with Antutu help me out? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I don't really run benchmarks, but I wanted to check some speeds vs my old N7 so I downloaded Antutu. When I open the app it says Hardware Scan: Reject. Anyone know what this means, or can anyone open Antutu on their new N7 and let me know if you see the same? Thanks will be in order.
Edit: It seems it thinks its my old N7, it hasn't been updated with the new N7 hardware. Sorry for the confusion.

It looks to me that antutu has not differentiated between the 2 nexus 7 devices yet. It thinks that the nexus 7 2013 should have a tegra 3 etc.

Galaxy Nexus GPU

Hello Everyone I have a Galaxy Nexus and love it. My only question is how will this GPU hold up in the long run. Right now it does pretty well (not as well as my 4s though) but also can sometimes stutter and lag. It runs nearly every game pretty well. My question is how soon will it be when it will no longer be able to handle higher end games? So I guess the question remains is it worth waiting for tegra 3. I do not need the best graphics ever but do enjoy for the games to run well.

Are u on 4.0.2? The stuttering isn't due to the gpu being weak it has to due with the sw. 4.0.3 adds some performance enhancements which will mostly fix the lag and stuttering.
4.0.3 will help stuttering in games?

The SGX540 is older, but it is also clocked higher than before and integrated in new ways into the OMAP4460. Now, as a comparison to the 4S? Not even close. Apple went all out, the SGX543 MP2 blows the Nexus' GPU out of the water. Completely. If gaming is your primary focus, it is the wrong phone. That said, I have experienced zero lag in games, and I've tried all the major titles. I haven't modified my phone at all. I think the phone will start to show its age in about a year or so, when the next Nexus device is released. However, the same will happen with the 4S. I don't think it will be the GPU in that device, but rather the RAM, the 3G speeds, etc.
All technology has a short lifespan.
edit: Typos.

I'm not sure what game(s) you are trying to play, but so far I've just tried out Sentinel 3 on my Nexus. While I was on 4.0.2, overall system performance seemed to be sluggish. Now that I am on 4.0.3 it's improved. Sentinel 3 was indeed laggy on 4.0.2 yet it's mostly gone now on 4.0.3 The game did perform better on my old phone, but I feel it's just a matter of the developer improving support for this phone's GPU.
As for Tegra 3, the question is.. "when?" Asus & HTC have stated they have new Tegra 3 devices in the works but vague ETA's on them. For all we know it could be like the Bionic and get released many months after they were supposed to be. Only time will tell.

ASUS Transformer Prime is already out in some retailers/etailers, but it is not mainstreamly sold due to demand. My friend got one from Frys the other day. Also, Amazon has started shipping some Transformer Primes to preorderers.

Thanks I am aware of Transformer Prime but I am looking phones. And the main game I noticed lag was GTA III. And if I can get 8 months with it I would be more then happy.

You mentioned ASUS. When it comes to ASUS, first thing I think about is their recognition in tablets. I know they're making a phone but no one really thinks about phones when people say ASUS.
But any regards, gaming on a tablet would probably be more preferable because the screen is so much bigger. At least for me, so you might want to look into that and see if it is something you'd want to invest your money in.

oh... me?... well, i was planning on getting a transformer prime myself(eventually). but yeah they have their "padafone" cell phone that's tegra 3 and supposedly coming out 1st q 2012. curious on how that progresses.
that padafone looks very uncompelling with the exception of the tegra 3. Would much rather nexus

same GPU as nexus s, approx 20% higher performance but needs to push 2x as many pixels. Performance (framerate) is notieceably worse than my nexus s. For example, that backbreaker game runs at 60fps on my NS, its prolly around 40ish
Its not a big deal for me since I mostly play simple time waster games on my phone. I ave a PS3 and laptop for when I really want to game.
Honestly, I kind of laugh at the whole Tegra 3 thing. Because I ask myself "why?"
Nvidia is rushing out the door with their quad core (there's even a secret fifth core as well!) Tegra 3 when most of us still remember the Tegra 2 and how crappy it was on that first-generation of Honeycomb tablets.
I owned an original Transformer with the Tegra 2 and couldn't even play 720p videos properly. Of course part of the issue is codecs as well and the Galaxy Nexus as a vanilla Android device isn't great on that front either... still, I can't help but feel Nvidia is rushing forth with this quad-core thing when nobody else is there yet simply because their previous offering was so mediocre.
I mean they had to devise the whole unnecessary "optmized for Tegra" games thing to make it look like the Tegra SoCs are something special when they are at best competitors to other SoCs.
I hope they fix the live wallpaper stutters. It's just ridiculous bad

Is it just me, or does Metal Slug 3 run like crap on the GS3?

I don't know if this has been asked before in depth, but Metal Slug 3 runs like crap on my Galaxy S3. The game starts fine, then it gradually slows down, and finally freezes. The same is true for Blazing Star. It plays fine initially, slows down, and then freezes. I don't know if this problem is exclusive to me, or if everyone with a Snapdragon S4, US variant Galaxy S3 is experiencing these issues. No one at the Play Store mentions it. Is this a real problem, exclusive to me ,or just an optimization issue.
Not that I think it's connected in any way, but I'm running the latest Free Sonic ROM, released on Friday.

Play SNK games on Emulator instead and you will never get slow speed, and they are all free including Metal Slugs.
I'm not playing it on a Neo Geo emulator. I'm playing SNK's official android port. It's really inexcusable. I'm sure there will be an update where the freezes are addressed. The Galaxy S3 is the most popular phone right now, so if the issue is prevalent, it will be addressed with an update.
Yes the Mali is somewhat better, but it isn't anywhere near a night and day difference. I haven't seen any benchmark or real world application where the Mali 400 spanked the Adreno 225. Truth be told, right now the Adreno can handle any current android game with ease. In my opinion, optimisation is the key.

Yeah Mame Reloaded.Go to Emuparadise and download Final Fight(World) and see if it works. You can set your own rom directory in settings toh, dont unzip the files but place the zip in rom directory.
The other version of Mame is good too, they just use different rom sets.Reloaded has better compatibility.
Just place Final Fight zip in rom directory and start the app,it should work. When you see that it does then you can download more roms. And you can use ps3 or wii controlers with it.
You will need this zip that i made for neogeo roms www.4shared.com/zip/ZWYvtdxA/neogeo.html .
Download the other Mame4Droid(0.37b5) and put the neogeo.zip in rom directory. After this you can download any neogeo rom from Emuparadise and it will work.
Also try other emulators they have n64,sega cd and genesis, snes and turbografix 16 are best ones.

I have the same problem (graphics slow to a freeze, but music plays fine) with Blazing Star and Metal Slug 3 on my Nexus running CM10 on a Galaxy Nexus. I don't think I had that issue with Metal Slug 3 under CM9. It could be an ICS vs. JB thing, especially considering JB's focus was graphics running buttery smooth (and having the opposite effect here).
I have the same problem here. No one from the play store seems to be complaining and I think it could specific to galaxy s3 running jb.
Funny thing is metal slug one and two world like a charm and can't imagine how much more complex the third instalment could be...

Need for Speed works flawless on mine. Have not tried others.
I can get Nova Multiplayer to work fine, but not the single player. Quite annoying.
I can't get Heroes or Order and chaos or Wild Blood to work correctly. Wild Blood lacks lots of graphics and Heroes crashes on the tutorial without explanation. Anyone have some thoughts?
TomTom doesn't work, but that isn't a game. Some drawing apps don't work yet either (all from the Hello ColorPencil variety), but I'm sure they will be fixed and aren't games.
The Simpsons tapped out has so much lag that I can't play it with this tablet, yet there is no problem when I play the same game on the first note 10.1, I wish I knew what the issue is, maybe it's the 4.3 problem ?.??..

Could everyone write up what version of the note you're having issues with, that way we might be able to find a patern. I.e what SoC is more stable, reliable.
Basing on similar Note 3 the Snapdragon 800 version has better app compatibility along with better performance.

I'm assuming you meant the 800 snapdragon?
It's faster, a tad more stable ( as far as I've been able to gather ) and seems to have broader support within games/ apps / development.
In essence

Exynos Better CPU

Sorry I meant the P600 which has the Exynos. I don't really see any benefit to having it. Sure it has "8" cores, but if it can't run things properly, why bother?
You guys are on drugs if you think the hardware isn't capable of running these games.
Just wait for the developers to update it won't be the end of the world.

I think it's more than capable. I'm worried about actual development more than anything. I think we'll see fewer roms/kernels, and less support for apps/games.
Yeah, we probably won't see roms or kernels thats true, i'm fine with that part as it defeats the purpose of this device.
As far as support from games it will be okay since these devices are selling fairly well (Note 10.1 & morso Note 3).

Sorry to dredge up an old thread but I just got the 2014 edition yesterday and I'm finding this game almost unbearable. But here's the weird part, previously I had the original Note 10.1 and it played fine, just like you say. When I got the new one I wiped the old one to give it to my wife. Now the old one lags terribly too.
This is really frustrating, but at the same time gives me some hope. It ran fine on the old one until I did the factory reset. So that tells me there might be a setting somewhere that can fix this issue.
Of course, this thread is so old you guys might have already solved the issue. If so, please post how you fixed it.

Still an issue. I've tried a number of things - factory reset, CleamROM, standing on my head, starting a new game, etc. Can't get decent performance out of my favourite game! This sucks!
Maybe I should try to open a support ticket with Samsung - wonder if they'd even respond.

[Q] Does Root + Debloat Resolve Performance Issues?

I just got my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 from Amazon and I'm already having issues with it
I play Simpsons Tapped Out and this game ran without any lag on my 2012 Nexus 7. However, when I load up the game on the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, I am having major lag while trying to pan around the town and even while trying to tap the buildings to collect money. I imagine Tapped Out is an incredibly casual and lightweight game(resource wise), so it makes me worried about how 'real' games will perform on the device.
My question is, if I root and debloat the tablet, will this improve performance on the tablet? Or is this the kind of performance that I can expect from the Exynos tablets?
I found this thread, and I was going to follow those instructions to debloat it with titanium backup(I assume I can use that to debloat it). Has anyone tried this and noticed an increase in performance?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help
As a follow up. I just went through and rooted the tablet, froze all that bloat and it's still performing like garbage in Simpsons Tapped Out. How is this possible that the Exynos chip isn't as good as a 2 year old tablet? Is it the QHD display? Is it TouchWiz that's causing it?
Out of all the reviews I looked at, none talked about this type of lag. This Simpsons game can't be that graphic intensive. Why is it stuttering so badly when I pan around the town?

May just be that that game is confused by the Exynos 8 core cpu. The device clearly has the power to run a simple game like that. In short, I think it may be the game and not the tablet.
One other idea. Try running Nova Launcher. But other users have had the same issue as you with that particular game.

That is really sad to hear. I can't get Family Guy working properly on the tablet and now this Besides watching content when I'm in bed, this is all I use the tablet for. It's making it really hard to format my 2012 Nexus 7 so I can give it to my father.
I'm curious if it's the CPU or the GPU that the game is having an issue with. I have had my eye on this forum lately and am getting excited that the CyanogenMod ROM might be the solution to my issue with these casual games. Positive thoughts :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for your input. I will say that it handles my 1080p content from my Drobo with BS Player flawlessly. So at least there's something

I wouldn't say I have a huge city, I'm only level 17. Nothing like my level 40 city in Family Guy. But I have a dozen or so characters unlocked in Simpsons. I can log out of my account and play as a guest I think to test on a starter city.
well, it wont' connect to the server now :/ but I will test it when I can
There have been reports of issues with this game on the other galaxy tablet forums as well. Since this tablet is fully capable of running even more complex games I would focus on the software as the issue. I'm not sure if these issues have been relayed to the developer but that would a great start to a resolution.

Back to the initial topic: Debloating can eliminate some of the background services that consume processing power. But it would surprise me if this would result in any relevant speedup (on an Octacore).
Other than that, probably the color adaption+enhancement thing does cost some performance (and battery).
And Mali T628 drivers might not be optimized.

Just to let you know it's not your tab. Tapped out doesn't work properly with exynos. It's the same note 10.1 2014 ed and tab so. It's a software issue

thanks for all the help everyone :good:
Just FYI... The Simpsons Tapped Out also performed horribly on my Nexus 10. I think it is the app. It was never optimized for some reason

It plays perfectly fine on my 2012 Nexus 7. There has been a swarm of lag complaints about it on blogs dedicated to the game. So maybe it's on their end
We now have some excellent rom's in development which should improve your experience.
I just tried the Simpson and couldn't try to replicate the lag problem. Mind runs very smooth.

thanks for testing
i loaded a new game and it ran ok until I got about 3 or 4 people on the screen. i see different lag spots. one happens when it first loads people's animations. so even if i scroll away, when i come back it seems to load those animations again. another lag spot i see is when i try to tap on a building to activate the money or finish the person's task. when the money bounces out of the building, i see lag spikes here. they don't go completely away after i collect the money, but shortly after
the family guy from the amazon store plays fine and doesn't have this lag. i also read on some dedicated simpsons tapped out blogs that EA is aware of a lag issue. however, im not entirely sure if i am getting the same lag they are confirming. we will see though.

Dolphin emulator Snapdragon 805 with Adreno 420 performance discussion

*update*
this issue should now be resolved with version 4.0-4706 which can be downloaded here!
https://buildbot.dolphin-emu.org/builders/release-android/builds/33
Thanks sonicadvance1 for the work done so far on this project, and the fast fix to the problem. I am going to test ot out a bit now.
*end update*
I have the AT&T variant of the samsung galaxy note 4 and thought I would post over here in the T-Mobile section to see if anyone here has had a chance to mess with this app.
Let me start by saying I already know the app is an alpha and that even though in the app's description on the play store it states this app will run terrible on all devices, I have noticed it runs better on the nore 3 than the note 4...
It is for that reason that I am particularly interested in seeing if decreasing the display resolution using nomone resolution changer or any other resolution changing app to 1920x1080 or even 1280x720 yields any increase in performance. There are videos of it running on the note 3 which has me stumped since I expected the 805 to at least outperform the 800 and the only limiting factor I could possibly think would cause for worse performance on the note 4 is display resolution (which shouldn't in theory matter when using opengl es 3.0 as it allows for selected rendering for internal resolution) or simple lack of driver support by qualcomm for the adreno line.
The developers of dolphin have already stated over the course of its development that the qualcomm chipsets have terrible driver support and that they greatly prefer/recommend the Nvidia tegra k1.
I guess I would like to know if anyone with root can try running some gamecube/wii games at a reduced resolution using both opengl es 3.0 and software rendering and report on their results. Unfortunately the AT&T Note 4 root prospect is looking grim atm and I would love to know how the note 3 is outperforming the note 4 but without root I can't accurately test it.
I get 10 to 14 fps in ssbm when the intro is playing, but as soon as I press start, the game drops to less than 1fps at the press start screen. That seems to pretty much be the norm with all of the games I have tried.
I have tried reicast and ppsspp on this phone and both run phenomenally even when rendered at the note 4 native resolution 2560x1440 which to be honest still blows me away.
I am sure there are tweaks and optimizations available to make it at least run a little better.
Please comment and provide feedback/experiences in a friendly manner

I haven't tried Dolphin emulator but here's something I remember seeing. The 805 in 2k resolution performs roughly the same as the 801 in 1080p resolution. Take that as you will but if both were the same resolution, ie 1080p, then the 805 would kill the 800/801.

You are correct.
That was what I was reading before the US Note 4 was released, it was based on benchmarks which could go either way when it comes to performance accuracy.
My thinking is this:
If dolphin is rendering at 2560x1440 despite the internal rendering resolution being set to 1x native, then dropping the phone's display resolution should greatly improve performance.
I could of course be wrong though and I have no way to test it yet

What controller(s) do you use? I've been thinking about getting the Moga Power controller for some OTG emulation with the Note 4. Although nothing will take my love away from my nvidia shield.
I'm on Sprint on the echo rom and I've never used app settings from xposed to change dpi of dolphin. I'll try that after work and report back

I bought a phonejoy for most of my emulation and gaming needs, the form factor is pretty cool but functionality wise it has its quirks like the right analog stick being permanently inverted.
I made a DIY gameklip using a sixaxis dualshock 3 and a hanger that I use for more hardcore gaming sessions. Video of it can be seen here:

Would love to hear about how the Moga is working for you since I was considering getting one as well.

Definitely appreciate it. I don't think the dpi would change anything other than user interface size but I could be wrong. Look forward to hearing your results.
We have a T-Mobile note 4 developer on the AT&T forum right now that seems to be making progress on root for the AT&T Note 4 which is pretty exciting.

The buildbot just reset when it went over 1000 or so entries, so it is back to 0 as of today. I think the previous builds should still be accessible on the main website somewhere but any new ones should still populate on this link going forward.

Update: I verified from Sonicadvance1 the developer for Dolphin that the adreno 4xx line of gpu were not detected properly in the coding for the android distribution of Dolphin. The developer says he will add it which means we should see some progress.

I wouldn't hold your breath. It hasn't even been running right on the Shield tablet and that is a Note 4 on steroids.

The shield tablet doesnt work because of the nvidia tegra 4 chip and how it handles graphics
The note 3 can run most games at half speed so the note 4 should do fairly well once the update is released to allow the glbuffer
Lets see how it runs once the minor fix is released to allow full opengl 3.0 support

The shield uses the tegra 4, the shield tablet on the other hand uses the tegra k1 which has a 192 core Cuda gpu, and is in fact faster than the note 4, however it is not much higher than the note 4 in benchmarks and the likelyhood is we can get decent performance given the performance seen on the note 3.

I thought he was talking about the shield portable and dolphin will not run on tegra 4 at all
as for the shield tablet some games are reaching playable speeds which is nice.
I am hopeful that the note 4 will provide some sort of speed boost over the note 3
someday this may be playable once further optimization is done.
I will be waiting for the update and i will provide gameplay videos for comparison

Had I not specified the exact version I was referring to, I could understand getting what I meant confused.
Just so we have a firm grasp on where I am coming from, I know for a fact that Nvidia worked with Dolphin directly to help with running on the Nvidia Shield Tablet, so I am making an educated prediction that Adreno devices, which have been known for buggy GLES 3 drivers, will not run as well. Ipso facto, poor on Shield tablet then poor on Note 4.

That is true, I suppose I am just an optimist.
That being said like others have stated it runs on the note 3, perhaps not playable, but better than the note 4 currently which leads me to think once this change is implemented the note 4 will surpass the note 3 in performance which is what I am sure we were all expecting from the note 4 out of the box.

I should also warn you that setting GLES 3 on the Note 4 breaks Unity games. I found that one out today trying to debug why my game is broken on Note 4 and nothing else. Qualcomm may be a better target for any dream of updates that fix functionality. For your sake, I hope that one is a Unity issue. G'luck.

dude.....dude.......dude.. I love you omg. I spent like a whole week doing exactly what you're doing now. my ssbm intro record is 16fps, by playing with some hacks in the settings. after into game either crashes or goes to less than 1fps. I bet you're the one who I saw posting questions on dolphin forums, and on that dudes YouTube video.
are you using the latest alpha builds? https://buildbot.dolphin-emu.org/builders/release-android
No idea how to find that link normally but I've been hanging onto it in my gKeep.
I know with root you can do some edits that'll make dolphin run better (says one of the dolphin mods).
I too was amazed old note 3 with a year less of development runs better than note 4 with an entire year of dolphin optimization.
kinda silly but running dolphins was one of the things I told myself could justify me buying the note 4 over the s5.

I brought the issue to the attention of Sonicadvance1 on page 2 of the thread https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-the-note-4-and-dolphin and have since been waiting for said change to happen.
I am also aware of the YouTube video showing the note 3 in action hence why I made this thread in an attempt to determine what is actually causing the problem. The problem is entirely on dolphin right now and I suspected that there are a lot of people silently accepting the fact that it doesn't work, simply on the premise that they are told to expect it to not run which is why I made this thread to create awareness and see if anyone else was in my boat that could help test and figure out the problem.
Honestly when I found the note 4 thread on the dolphin forum it was already an off topic dead topic, so I wasnt expexting such a quick response from the developer. It was a nice surprise to learn the issue is what appears to be a simple fix in dolphin.
Now it is just a waiting game.
Also, just from reading the changes made in the buildbot, I suspect those changes are intended for the Linux version since some of the changes are notated regarding features not present in the android version such as d3d.
