Apps 2 SD? - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I just bought this tablet on Newegg with their 50% off promo code and now I'm trying to decide if I'd want to keep it or gift it. 16gb is a little low for my taste as I am using 20gb for apps on my Nexus 7 at the moment, and I was curious if Apps2SD was on this tablet or not? That's the deciding factor for me, otherwise it looks about darn near perfect for my taste!

We've got root, so you can use apps to achieve this. There was someone who moved data from a game onto their SD card and had success, but nothing too conclusive.

A better tool is Foldermount. You can find this in the Play store. While not automatic it does allow you to move apps to an SD card. Its pretty easy to use and has worked flawlessly on my Galaxy tab (still waiting for my G Pad to show). In any case give it a try. Free version allows setup of 3 folders. Any more requires purchase but its only $1.99 so small investment.

There's also this free tool here on XDA:

I've used that personally and it works really well.

Awesome, thanks for the quick answers! Guess I'll order a 64gb SD card then and keep this bad boy!

Root is must. I am using Folder mount on my G Pad. Working well.

Folder Mount has a lot of limitations (3 folders max, not allowed to bind obb) unless you pay. GL to SD doesnt have these limitations and paying to buy the full version allows you to boot on startup. Ofc directory bind that mustbep mentioned is free, open source and doesnt have any limitations.

I use foldermount on my g2 and my gpad, everything works as expected except the fact that the app doesn't write on the mounted folders did anyone notice that

hey guys, thanks for the recommendations. I just tried out GL to SD and it seems to be good, although the problem is that it can't detect all my games (I don't have any Gameloft games but it still managed to detect around 9 games but left out some others). So i wanna try out Foldermount but would like to have my games moved back to their original place before doing so. Does anyone know how I can do this or if I need to do it manually, which folder to put the apps and their data files? Thanks!

32gb S3, is all space available for apps?

Is all 32 gb of space available for apps? I'm so disappointed about not being able to move apps to an SD card. Nova 3 is almost 2 gigs! With Shadowgun and Dead Trigger installed, I'm out of space on my 16gb S3. I would have bought the 32gb model if I would have known ahead of time.
i got stuck with a 16gb model because sprint stores don't carry 32gb
16gb you really only have like 12gb usable
there are work arounds but you have to be rooted, etc to move apps to SD card. i hope google brings back ability to install to SD card when you download a game..

Yeah, the 16gb is a horrible option if you like gaming. Thanks for the link. Still would prefer a larger internal though. I'll be going for the 64gb Note 2 when it releases.
So does anyone know if the 32gb S3 lets the additional 16 gb be used for app storage?
I have the 32gb model and if I recall it was about 26gb usable, more than enough imo

[Q] Is 16gig Enough

I see the SGN2 on ATT only has 16g of memory. Should I wait to see if they get devices with more memory? I understand that you cannot really run apps from the SD card. Could some one please shed some light on this for me?

I can't imagine someone having 16G of apps? Matter of faxt 8 gig of apps would be crazy. I have 30 apps on my SGSIII and that is only .7G. Most Apps are only like 10M so it would take 100 apps for 1 G. Id say 16G is plenty. Buy a 64G SD card for all your media files and you should be fine.
16 GB is fine on a phone that allows an external microSD card. Put all your music, photos, videos, etc on the microSD and you'll have 16GB dedicated only for apps.
16 GB on a device that doesn't have an SD slot is okay for people who either don't have much stuff or that store that stuff on a "cloud" service (dropbox, google music/drive, etc) Personally, I don't like the "cloud" idea as it uses up my data allotment.
For the sake of comparison, I have 4 Gigs of music and many apps on my Inspire 4G with 8 GB micro SD Card. 16 GB internal with a 32 GB card will be more space than most people will use.
i actually had to clear out internal space for tomtom maps on my 16gb atrix (no option to use sd card for the maps) ....and i only use internal for apps.
yeah i know there are ways to force apps to sd...but it was causing freezing issues on the atrix...
so yeah, a little disappointed that there isn't a 32gb at launch...cuz in two years apps can just get bigger and bigger....

Can't you install the APPS on the SD card, just like you can do today?
Was just curious on difference in file size between my ios apps and soon to be android apps. I will compare a couple of other apps later today but if this is the trend I don't think I will have an issue with only 10gb of usable space.
I just compared the original angry birds 2.3.0 and my ios app is 112mb and the play store shows the android version is only 24mb.
Netflix ios 30.3mb and playstore shows the android version at 10mb.

wow. That concerns me greatly.
For me 16GB is not enough for main memory. I have a 32GB SD card but unfortunately on the S3 and presumably the Note 2 App2SD won't work. So all you are left with is 16gb to install all your apps, which is really like 11GB useable. Well if you want to play games on your phone (I have been) a lot of these bigger games are each 1GB or larger!! I just Bards tale and that had an option to install 3.5GB!! So for me I have to say my next phone needs to have at least 32GB or larger especially if App2SD can't get working right. I was really hoping the Att GN2 would come in 32 and 64GB flavors.
1 guy posted in the thread I pasted that Titanium backup moves Apps to the SD without issue. I get mine Tuesday I'll be trying it first thing. If it doesn't work I'll have to return it, 10Gb is not enough for Apps now and future.

My main concern regarding the memory configuration is that I thought I read somewhere in the forums that internal memory has faster access than the SD card expansion memory. My current Galaxy Note is using a 16g internal memory configuration with a 32g Class 10 SD card. I was hoping to go for the 32g option for internal memory if it was going to be made available but maybe the speed benefit isn't that great.
When looking at the pre-order options, I only see the 16g model and it doesn't offer the white version that is listed on Samsung's site! I'm not sure if I should wait a little longer or just dive in now!

About to pull the trigger and buy a Note 2

Hi all,
I'm about to pull the trigger and buy a Note 2. I want to get the Titanium Grey one as I already have a White S2 so it's not worth getting white again. I was looking forward to getting the 32GB version, in my country we got a some units of the 32GB in white and now they're out of stock, and I guess we won't be getting 32GB anytime soon so I've decided on the 16GB coz I got fed up of waiting.
What I want to make sure of is, does swapping partitions of the internal sd with the external sd card really work with some script or with roms that have init.d enabled, can't remember exactly. I've seen a few tutorials and it does seem to work perfectly with lots of users. I'm planning on getting the famous 64GB Sandisk SDXC card. Also does the phone's speed get affected if I load the memory card with lets say 40GB or more of stuff in it??
Please make me comfortable enough to make my purchase
Thanks
I am currently using the extsd2internalsd mod (look it up int the Android Development section) and what it does is place the app's caches and other files on the sd card instead of the phone (ex. The 1GB file of Asphalt goes to the sd card ehile the small main app remains on the phone). So far this method has worked perfectly for me (internal memory has barely been used) so it's worth giving it a try
Regarding slow downs, on previous devices (Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7) when the internal memory starts to fill up I could notice the device getting slower however I don't think this will happen on an SD card (I have 5GB remaining on my 32GB sd card and so far I had no slow downs)

Depends on files used. Also, you might notice slowdowns when you get to around 10% of your memory's capacity. For instance, the 64gb formatted is ~60gb and when you start getting below ~10gb it might slow down.

I usually dont fill up my phone with lots of images and videos...only apps and a few games that's. But the games such as Gameloft games do take a large amount of space..but I guess there is a workaround to this using GL to Sd or directory bind..is that correct??

I personally use directory bind. It is extremely simple to use and works great on the Note 2. Basically, puts the data of big apps to your externam sd card. All my big games are on my external now. Games like NFS Most Wanted, Modern Combat. I always have over 7 gigs in my internal. Currently have used about 30 Gigs on my external due to a lot of videos ^_^ Here's the link to Directory Bind Download the latest version "O" (It goes in alphabetical order)

Why would you buy the 32gb model when you can use otg usb?

Thank you
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Because I had the cash to
because I like to carry my tablet alone, not a wire and a usb stick or harddrive so its a ease of convenience factor.
Because I don't want to carry a bunch of extra peripherals and have junk dangling from my tablet.
Because of course no one Will like to have wire hanging out your device and also internal flash is way faster than usb also pendrive sucks huge amount of battery every time you use it
Liked My Suggestion Please Use Thanks Button
Basically what every one else said the price difference is so low why not have the extra onboard storage. I really don't carrying around extra stuff as it is. Its sorta why I refuse to buy a laptop with a DVD drive, because I know I'd end up buying an external one because all my media is not in the cloud, especially the things I do for work.
convenience. Do you really want to have a tail hanging out of the bottom of the device everytime you want to watch a movie?
I think a better question would be, why would you want to carry around extra crap?
Because it'd rather not have to rely on having a usb stick/hard drive plugged in every time I want to watch something
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
because it was what, 40 dollars more? what a silly question. I have a 16 gig s4 with a 64 gig card. I need space. my old nexus was 32. my HTC dna is only 16 with no card and at every given moment I only have like 700mb free. it's awful.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I wanted the 32gb, but it was out of stock.
Now knowing that usb otg works i have no regrets though - i think it was a better choice actually!
I'm importing this thing so an extra $40 = more like $60, and i never had any space issues with my old 16gb n7.
Also backed the microsd kickstarter, which is very compact and can store my 64gb sandisk with media on it.
It takes like half a min to copy over a movie to internal and you're done.
Also being able to access and manage files without the need to plug my n7 to a PC (when i want to add a movie) is so much easier, just plug in the portable hard drive and play...
There are some really portable otg cables out there, mine is smaller than an average usb drive.
Unused space = wasted space, so no regrets...
I got the 16GB. My 32GB original N7 was never filled past halfway. All my music is on my phone and when I watch something on it, it's usually via netflix. If I really need that space for some reason (long plane ride or something) I can deal with the OTG cable sticking out.

Personally, since it has no sd card, I played it safe. My music alone would never fill it up, though i have some ~ 3,900 songs.
When I load up game of thrones, it takes some space. I'd use my otg for long trips or if i won't have access for a while.
Also, you can't use otg without an app that will mount it, currently, until its enabled in custom roms.
Indeed, loading up movies & videos for viewing while travelling, it eats up space fast. For an extra $40 seems silly not to opt for the 32gb if one had the availability and choice.

Because USB OTG requires root in order to mount the flash drive and I'd rather be root free.

Moral of the thread
Different strokes for different folks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I am actually a big fan of secure cloud. Netflix and YouTube, Hulu, and other less known sites. I have many devices but I don't think I've gone beyond 8 on any. Just not a prob for me. But I can see where it would be for some. I have like more books on nook than I can readily count, music, games and when it comes to backup's I push to PC, usually wirelessly lol. I find it safer to store on PC plus no room issues. This is a play with device to hold me till the big boys start popping out and I'm frugal. That said I'm coming to like her much more than I thought I would. When this tab gets a few more mods it will really be a beauty.
Like the man said, different strokes.

[Q] Couple of questions about storage on this device prior to purchase

Hi all,
I've been waiting for a 10inch OLED device for a long long time now so very happy when T800 came out.
I live in UK however and they only offer 16GB internal storage. I've been patient waiting for 32GB version but that's wearing thin now.
Some reviews state you can use external microsd card for apps I thought I ask those that have already bought one.
I don't plan on initially rooting it until I've broken it in for few months.
So my question does this tablet allow you to use external sd for apps and apps data without hassle? I've not really used kitkat but Jelly bean made sdcard use such a pain. I know I can use link2SD etc if I root (do they still work on this tab without issue?)
If I install galaxy on fire and a bards tale my internal storage is already full so this issue is really important.
Thanks
Chris

E may be what designates 32GB in the model number. But, as I understand things, Best Buy has an exclusive deal right now as being the only place that sells the 32GB version???

Hi all,
I've been waiting for a 10inch OLED device for a long long time now so very happy when T800 came out.
Thanks

Chris, the Samsung included My Folders app can read/write to a micro SD card without rooting. There is also a built in function that allows you to move apps to external storage (micro SD card). Plus when you take pictures and you have micro SD card inserted the Tab S will automatically save the pictures to the external storage except for rapid picture mode which needs the fastest storage possible. I've not tried moving an app to external storage but have seen the picture saving work. The only "stock" limitation with external storage is that read/write privileges are restricted to the My Folders app. Alternate file managers (e.g ES File Manager) can read/copy but not write.

Other than media Its mostly for large game data files. I would not have more than 1 or 2 of these at same time but the available 10GB of internal would not cut it.
Samsung own webshop is awful http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/SM-T805NZWABTU
I almost bought one straight away but notice no where on the spec does it mention the size of the internal memory. Almost criminal.
Thanks for the model number just wish the stores listed half of them samsung themselves certainly don't
