[meta] Why is the 2:1 display of the 5T marketed as 18:9? - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Is there a special meaning behind the 18 or the 9 or are marketing guys just interested in making numbers look bigger?
(Not so meta: why is it a good thing that a phone is twice as high as it's wide - is there a new movie format I haven't heard of?)

18:9 is obviously 2:1, but it's probably marketed as 18:9 so people can compare it directly to 16:9 .

Instead of 4:3? I see.

Because someone looks 16:9 and 18:9 and maybe thinks 18:9 is better because 18 is greater than 16.

Only reason I want a better camera is so they include a LED light next time; I'm missing my phone being a flashlight.

Still better than 6.3 Mega with 720p display.
It target to Mega 6.3 and another Chinese phones with 6 inhcer screen
I might be in the minority but I think a 6" phone is the sweet spot. Don't get me wrong, I love my ZU but between the large top and bottom bezels and the huge screen its a bit too big.
My dream device would essentially be a 6" Z1 only with smaller bezels...think that will ever happen?
I thought that too before and the reason I skipped the Note 3 is because it was not 6" but now after having the Ultra...I dont know if I can go back....and I cannot really go higher really without being a tablet so I guess this is where I draw the line?

Yeah, i'm not going bigger after the Ultra. 6.4" is so soo close to the tablet category that i just can't do it I'll accept anything between 5.5 and 6.4 inches.

I would give Apple another look if they actually made that rumored 5.5" version of the iPhone 6... no Cupertino hate here
On a side note note... At dinner the other night we stacked my friends 4S on the ZU just for fun... It was good for a laugh but started a 5min rag session on how redonculously large the phone is lol. My friends just don't get it...

Hah! My friends did the exact same thing. They're quite facinated by my Ultra, so it was a lot of laughing, but they all know how large phones are today, so it went on for about 3 minutes and then they all wanted to take a closer look at it The Ultra is a great conversation starter

Do You think that the camera in S9 will be minimum or much better than in S8?

Do You think that the camera in S9 will be minimum or much better than in S8?
Well I mean, the only details Samsung has officially released about the S9 itself is "The camera, reimagined," so uh yeah
Minimal change, with some new effect of a selfie or something like that.

I wonder if camera wise S9 (single)= Note8(double)
cause S9+(double) > Note8 (double)
It already revealed that is has super slow motion (f/1.5, 26mm, 1/2.5", 1.4 µm, Dual Pixel PDAF)
Considering I always put a custom AOSP-based ROM on my phones, I've sort of lost hope in having a decent camera. Because of... reasons... you lose out on the amazing camera capabilities if you don't run a stock ROM. It's quite depressing knowing the camera is far more-capable than what I'm getting out of it.

Mainly just the camera. Performance-wise the Mate 10 lacks in numbers, but it still feels just as snappy.
The monochrome cameras are great, and the camera app's pro mode is really nice to take some great pictures with. I especially fell in love with the 30s exposure.

How about Note8, are thie pics from Mate also better than Galaxy Note8?
Nope camera won't be good until they overcome the hardware limitation, 12 mega pixels are good, but when you see the pics on computer or zoom in then you see the blur and weakness of 12 mp camera but i know that in past 22 megapixels sonys have really bad image quality because it doesn't depend solely on increased mp, but for a real upgrade now they need to increase megapixels while still retaining same image quality, atleast 20 megapixel and still a large aperture size is the only thing that can push me to upgrade, other than that, front facing fingerprint scanner and atleast 3600+ mah battery is a must, but its still nice that they added stereo speakers, i would like to see fm radio and infrared back too. Btw both exynos 9810 and snapdragon 845 are still far behind from apple's A12 bionic chip, both in terms of processor and gpu performance. So a hard choice which to upgrade atm.

Some general points.
Megapixels has nothing to do with it really. It's the size of the sensor. I do have it on good authority though that at least one of the well known brands is working on a halo product with a 1" sensor. But expect it to cost the earth, if it sees the light of day, and to be much thicker than today's flagships.
Probably the P20 with its triple camera sensor (likely interpolated into single auto HDR images) and software collaboration with Leica is likely to be the best bet for photography this year. But expect to get *at best* dual camera support on custom ROMs (if OpenCamera / LineageCamera / GoogleCamera begin supporting dual configs).
S9 and S9+ will probably show quite a bit of improvement in low light, and autofocus.
I really wish Samsung would allow Samsung Camera to run on their phones that run AOSP / custom ROMs. I can see why Sony, and to some extent Huawei won't, as smaller players with niches. But Samsung are the market leader and could still attach function to hardware IDs, rather than allowing it to work on competitors' phones.
If Nokia / HMD keep improving sales, I'm pretty sure you'll see Pureview, or something similar resurrected. Protos / designs are certainly being looked at, but likely depend on them continuing to build momentum. If they have a good 2018, expect to see something from them in 2019 with 4-6+ rear camera sensors ... bit like a mini L16. But, again, expect them to lock the software to their stock ROM.

Thanks and wow for that massive knowledge. I wonder what P20 will bring to the table with their 5 cams. 27th March is the premiere. How much will it cost in Your opinion. EUR or USD please if possible and add with or without tax.
I'm almost exclusively interested in the video camera capabilities of the S9+. I can manage with a mediocre photo camera but video needs to be class-leading in smartphones.
Ability to shoot UHD video in h.265 compression + much better low light performance than Note 4 = I'd be very happy.
Sadly LG put an undersized sensor in their V30 (not to mention the sucky POLED display) - otherwise I might grab a V30 right now for a good price. I wonder what LG has in store for the V40, given their focus on video shooting prowess.

96hz refresh rate

Has anyone in here tried the 96hz refresh rate? Does it save battery and feel quite fluid? Just wondered if it's safe to do so and if it makes a difference?
I use it. It's buttery smooth like 120hz but battery is bit better now with 96hz.
Does this require just developer options or root?

Just to clarify....does this phone only work at 120hz if you set the resolution to 1080p? This means if you use the phone with its highest quality display it will only refresh at 60hz?
If that's the case well then that's just pointless isn't it?
I was so ready to buy this phone after moving to Razer for their 1 and 2 phones which both work at 120hz on maximum resolution - but if these only give 120hz at 1080p then what is the actual point??

I think this is a hardware limitation - a software update wont do anything
I now understand why they didnt really push it as a major selling point as there would have been a lot of backlash.
I feel for those who didnt do proper research as they would have assumed they were getting 120hz at all resolutions
i think this is a major fail on samsungs part...I would have thought others on here would have felt the same...?

fair enough - i guess I am just used to 120hz all the time and didnt really affect the battery on either of my Razer phones - TBH it lasted longer than any other Samsung phone i ever owned even with 120hz on - always got a full day out of it.
you would have expected with such a large phone as the ultra that battery would never be an issue....i guess this is another slight fail - no point in having 120hz if it has such a drastic impact on battery....
yes most of us would have watched videos and know what they are getting - however your average consumer is not us loool....

No problem. To be honest, I've had the phone for about a month now and while in my opinion this is the best phone Samsung has made to date, I do have some reservations about it that don't seem to be going away. The camera performance is really not very good (more mid-range to be honest) and the inability to run 120Hz at the full resolution (or even just 90-ish Hz) is somewhat frustrating for the price paid. I'm lucky in the sense that I bought the phone from Microsoft Canada and since they shuttered all of their stores I will have 30 days to return or exchange *after* they reopen their physical locations, so I probably have another 2 months to use the phone and see what updates do before I have to make the call on whether to keep or return it. I really recommend using the phone for about a week or two at least prior to deciding if you want to keep it, with particular emphasis on camera performance that is by far the biggest shortcoming.

Yes - you are lucky you get a good trial run!!
Staggering what you say about the camera. The camera seems to be the only difference between the ultra and the rest of the range yet the price is nearly double....if its not that good then surely better to get one of the other 2 models as you get the same phone really...
Tell me - is this refresh rate situation the same with the whole S20 range (ie the normal one and the plus)? or do the others work at 120hz on max res?

The entire range has the refresh limitation. Keep in mind that other versions have smaller screens and cameras have no optical zoom. Only the Ultra has optical zoom. Samsung really bungled the camera business this year which is so ironic because that was supposed to be the biggest thing about these new phones.

120Hz QHD Update?

I wanted to ask if anyone has heard of any further updates on when Samsung will finally enable 120Hz on QHD. If we can use this thread to post updates? Do you think they're gonna wait until after the Note 20 phones are announced/released? It would suck to have to wait that long. FHD+ is fine but we know it would be great to have these displays blasting all the way.

It will arrive when 25w charging will be enabled on S10 series phones as promised by Samsung last March.
Its a marketing gimmick.
Forget about it! It's not going to happen. If you want 120Hz on QHD you need a S21.
Every other Smartphone that support 120Hz or even 144Hz get released with that option.
WTF Samsung. You are the Panel maker and supplier to all of those company's and they manage to bring those feature at day one.
I'm telling y'all it's because of the Exynos 990. They can't enable it on SD variants and leave the Exynos users behind that would reveal and confirm that the Exynos is crap, and would result in complaints which Samsung is trying to avoid.
its not gonna happen mate - sorry !!!
that was just rumours spread around to make people buy the phone thinking they can get it later
but as you can see they have issues with [email protected] so no way they're going to release it for QHD
It's probably not going to happen perhaps due to battery concerns. Could possibly be ready Note 20 series.
Nevertheless it's a top phone when I consider overall phone factor.
I've reviewed oneplus 8 Pro oppo find x2 and initially I did notice the difference qhd and 120hz refresh rate however several days later I've come back to my s20 ultra.
One thing I would have advised samsung to screw trying to perfect million camera lens wasting millions on testing tweaking but utilize resources to focus on getting the screen right. Hit it out of the park.
Having said that I'm back to my s20 ultra now for several reasons I'll do a comparison of all three thread maybe.

There is a hardware limitation of 120hz display on s20. You can check anandtech website for the same. It will never get QHD 120. Wish they make it variable and use combination of 48,60,96,120 to improve battery. I am ok with 120hz FHD but I think due to this implementation we are unable to run many games on 120( till now) that runs fine on other devices.

There's issues with 120 on FHD? I haven't seen any on either the S20+ or this Ultra?

There is a hardware limitation of 120hz display on s20. You can check anandtech website for the same. It will never get QHD 120. Wish they make it variable and use combination of 48,60,96,120 to improve battery. Hardware limitation? I thought the SD865 is rated to support up to 144hz?

Not with the processor but the way it it all implemented
It lacks MIPI interface.

OK everyone. We established it's not gonna happen. Aaaaaand? Are we just gonna accept this fact? Let it slide? Shouldn't Samsung get **** for this?

I think the **** they should really receive first is the fact that the screen is green when 120hz is enabled... LOL
I've disabled 120hz since it's so noticeable, even with the latest updates. For now, I'd rather have 1440p than 120hz.

Which S20? I don't see it on my Ultra even at low light
From photos I've seen it looks like some have defective panels it was so noticeable

Think they're referring to the Exynos version. I'm in the US, SD so no green issues with mine. I've spent a few minutes trying to replicate it but couldn't see any issues. @Nightwind Hawk did you mean to say you disabled 120 because it's NOT so noticeable or that it is? If it is noticeable, why disable it?
Not to suggest that I don't believe that one source about this being a true hardware limitation on these phones but I'd prefer a more authoritative corroborating source to confirm this. In any case, it sucks that we don't have QHD with 120 but at the end of the day it doesn't kill the phone for me.
OP8 Pro has QHD @120 but screw using a phone again with that much of a damn curve on its display. I can't stand the curve on OP phones. If OP made the display on that 8 Pro FLAT, whoa...

I haven't noticed any green tint issues even with 120Hz at the moment I'm running mine in 96Hz so don't really notice any must be luck of the draw.
Guys this thread is about 120Hz @ QHD and not that green tint issue! There is a seperate thread about that issue... please discuss that issue over there.
Although who cares about this thread? Samsung isn't going to read this thread and decide to release a update.
Yeah can't work plainly due to exynos processors being unable to keep up with it.
not happening people
https://www.sammobile.com/news/why-galaxy-s20-will-probably-never-get-120hz-qhd-resolution/
Its interesting the Asus ROG 2 suffered from a red tint @ 120hz... Now the S20 suffers green tint @ 120hz..

General Crying and Complaints* - Updated changelog 1st Post

Why was this phone advertised with a 50MP camera but you only get a 12MP shot. Highly disappointing.
*Update* User @Ghisy added an "n" to Complaints in the title. This letter fixed the misspelling and corrected everyone's problem with my not on purpose...problem.
Remember the its 30w charging but the truth ended up being the official charger is 30w and the phone is only 23w, my how I laughed, not
Member when changing to 60hz PRESERVED battery and not used more?
Google - "See 60hz is actually OLDER tech...and it's not as EFFICIENT as 120hz..."
Us - Ohhhh
Me - whant?

Every phone does this. It's pixel binning.

You are right about pixel binning however they don't lock it down by hardware like Google meaning no one is ever going to get a 50MB image from this, as MKHD said they shouldn't have called it a 50MB camera when its locked at 12

I get close to 30w wirelessly (27w-28w) charging with pixel Stand 2 for some time before it goes down to 23-21 when the battery level increases

So if you sold me something for $100 and only got $70 for it would you be upset about the difference in loss?

This. This is what almost drove me to another phone. Yea I know Samsung and apple are also around the same terribly slow charging speed, but when you have numerous other brands charging 60 - 80w and soon a whooping 150w device coming from OnePlus, 23w is absolutely pathetic. They really couldn't have done better?

It's not at 120hz at all times, it's from 1hz to 120hz depending what's going on, so yes it is new hardware helping battery.

MKHD is a shill, don't listen to him.
Besides a binned 12MP is ample and looks better than 12MP

For the price point? Probably not. I mean, I got my P6P for 800. The equivalent Samsung phone at the time (with the same storage capacity since they no longer support MicroSD expansion) was 1500!!! Nearly double the price! But, I already had that Samsung device, sold it for around 800 and was then able to get the P6P without having to spend any additional money =D.
So, although this Pixel series has more bugs than any of the previous Pixel series' that I have dealt with, its still got a better software interface and has full customization via the unlockable bootloader - all things that are beneficial to nerds like me =P.

I see what you're trying to say, but come on 2-3w difference is not the same as $30 difference. Its funny when people go to extreme to make a point. Fail lol

How would you know and he's right we should have had the option for full as advertised 50MB camera, it comes under false advertising

Because I know what he's like and what he has done, but that's a seperate topic.
And no it doesn't, it has a 50MP camera.
They promised us a 50MP camera, they did not promise us 50MP pictures.

The S22 is a 108mb camera because you have the option to use it, you don't have the option to use a 50mb in the Pixel 6, it's effectively a 12mb no matter what you say

Just one small data point but my kid ditched his 22 and went back to his Pixel because of the camera. Quality of the shot counts more than how many MPs.

More MP in a photo doesn't make it better, my 108MP shots on my old N20U looked worse
