A70 vs S9 Plus - Samsung Galaxy A70 Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying one of those two phones.
The main feature of a phone for me is the camera, and I was wondering if you have any verdict on which has a better camera, and if the quality difference (of the cameras) between those phones noticeable.
Thanks!

The s9+ have a much better camera. But no widescreen altough the wide screen camera of the A70 is not more then ok.

There's nothing much to talk about a70 cameras. I am not satisfied with camera clarity and performance for such high price.

It's not a high priced phone at all. The A70 is £369, whereas the high-spec/high-priced range would be things like the S10+ at £899.

Try the gcam mod. It makes a great improvement on phones from Xiaomi. I hope it works on A70.

Congrats for having extra phone. I hope that i will buy this phone in near future.
Please can you make some "selfie" camera comparison LG v30 vs OP5 or Note 8? Because I read that selfie camera on V30 is very bad. I see that is not so good at night, but how is at day? Is selfie camera really bad?

P. S. Is still beta software on the phone or it is release full version?
Hi dears,
the V300L I have is the final consumer one but the firmware is still in beta.
Today the first firmware update: now it's V10j with Google patch up to September 1th. It is an update of 297MB but I didn't see any log online.
I confirm... there is a lot to work around for the picture and video quality but we have the hardware... it's just a software deal.

can't say I'm all that impressed by the camera. It fine and all not not a anything too different from other flagships. From other pictures I've seen all that talk about glass lens and 1.6 aperture doesn't really translate to anything special. Larger aperture but a smaller actual sensor doesn't really gain you much it seems. I've seen at least one person say the auto mode isn't that great, just like the V20. Hopefully, I'm wrong and it's an improvement.
The DAC is what keeps me interested, and maybe video.

I should agree. After using my new V300SJ10 I'm kinda disappointed in the wide-angle camera. The image is sometimes blurry on the sides/top/bottom, and looks like it was caused by the software, not hardware (even with both HDR and noise reduction OFF, and even in good light conditions). Hope it will be fixed in the next updates.
I'm impressed with the portrait camera though, it makes really great pictures! The video quality is very good as well.

Can you tell me is big difference between video at 1080p 30fps and 1080p 60fps? Because in my OP5 when I turn on 1080p 60fps is much darker then 1080p 30fps.
Is it any differences in video quality in 60fps vs 30fps?

Thanks. But you take pictures wrong. You should set HDR to off when taking photos indoors on V30. Look how blurry V30 gets when HDR is on
It's not OK but HDR is to blame, not camera itself

P. S. And you said "portrait" camera? Did LG V30 have Portrait mode like iPhone 7 Plus/ 8 Plus? I know that LG G6 don't have but ot will be nice to have it.
Damn it looks like the camera isn't much better than the G6. That chromatic aberration at night reminds me of my 15 year old point and shoot Nikon... I wonder if it's LGs crappy ? app? I tried the Google pixel camera app and it wasn't this bad.

Yes, by portrait camera I meant the main "16 MP f/1.6" camera. The second "13 MP f/1.9" one is not as good as the first one
By the way, I've also tested sound quality today and I'm not impressed
I was thinking of replacing my COWON Plenue D player with the V30, but unfortunately the sound difference is pretty noticeable, COWON sounds much clearer and open (by much, I mean, that I can pass blind test for sure). Maybe some people would find it subtle, but I like electronic music and this difference is huge for me. For testing I used FLACs by the "Demoscene Time Machine" guy (like this: https://soundcloud.com/demoscenetimemachine/demoscene-time-machine-memcpy) and Sennheiser IE80 buds. Both COWON and V30 EQ settings was set to Normal (HiFi DAC was enabled in V30, tried different settings, even EQ, but nothing helped).
The phone is pretty much cramped all together with other noise emitting components. Audiophiles pretty much know that there isn't much sound quality expected other than the extra amp power. We tried the high impedance mode and we weren't impressed either.
Camera = not yet there
Software = not yet there
Quad DAC = not close to a $100-500 portable dac
POLED screen = needs improvements
Battery = showed positive endurance results
We can say it is jack of all trades, master of none.

Which is Better? A70 or Huawei Mate 20X?

I got the samsung a70. I like the phone's 6.7 inch display. But the aspect ratio makes it a bit narrow. That's why I'm thinking about getting the huawei mate 20x which has a 7.2 inch screen. Do you think I should stay with this phone or buy the mate 20x?
Bigger screen, faster cpu, faster gpu....more expensive.
Yes its obviously an improvement in some areas - it's a different class of phone at a higher price point. The question is are those improvements important to you and is the addition cost justifiable. Since "better" is a subjective term, you would need to answer that one yourself.

I love the Samsung A70 phone's thinner aspect ratio because the extra length makes it a lot more practical as a phone and in most cases makes it as enjoyable to use for consuming media as a larger phone with 16:9 aspect ratio, and still fits in my pockets easy.
For my uses, which doesn't include a lot of video gaming, I don't ever want to use a 16:9 phone again.
Not to mention I only paid $370 USD for my A70.

But from what I read you can unlock and root the mate 20x. Unless I'm missing something.
Mate 20X but it costs double the price of the A70.
Excellent performance. Insane battery life. Excellent stereo speakers. Flagship build quality. Screen is wider and bigger but maybe less sharp than A70.
Mate 20X is a beast.
Alas, No Huawei for me as the problem with android updates and google play updates still not fully solved, then the bootloader is locked as i know and no custom development in kirin processors as snapdragon variants, narrow phone means easier to use and carry with one hand , a70 not a bad phone really the only things that pisses me off is i prefer stock vanilla android and only mono external speaker, but every thing else is near perfect

Difference in sharpness must be noticeable. Mate 20X has a much bigger and wider 7.2 inch screen with a low pixel density of 346 only. While the A70 has a much smaller and narrower screen but a higher pixel density of 393.
This means A70 screen is definitely sharper. It's a very high quality super sharp AMOLED panel comparable to other Samsung flagships.
Meanwhile the Mate20X has an OLED panel not SAMOLED. Don't get me wrong, I have seen reviews on Youtube of the Mate20X and the screen looked very nice. It's not like we are talking about LCD vs AMOLED.
Mate20X is still the superior phone and multimedia beast.

I prefer the Mate 20X hands down. Bigger and wider screen (A70 is too tall and narrow). better aspect ratio 18:9 (A70 has the ridiculous 20:9 which makes 90% of online videos appear with huge black bars on the sides). Better stereo speakers with loud and clean sound (A70 has a single mono speaker with just average loudness). Better premium build quality. Better performance with flagship chipset. Much better cameras. Amazing battery life I have seen 10 to 12 hours sot on reviews (A70 battery life didn't impress me at all) . Fingerprint sensor is blazing fast and super accurate (A70 fingerprint sucks).
That's all I can think of right now.
Amoled IS OLED, it's short for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. It's one of two types of OLED panel, the other being PMOLED (Passive Matrix OLED). All modern phone displays are AMOLED, although samsung like to bundle everything including the touch sensors in to to one layer and call it AMOLED. The underlying oled tech is the same however. Don't know if the mate 20x has a single layer panel. Doesnt make much difference tbh.

Hmm the A70 objectively isn't as sharp as the panels used on the S/Note series. It also doesnt support HDR or wide colour gamut (DCI-P3). I honestly don't think they are that far off though.
Battery life of the A70 certainly impresses me - I regularly get 7 hours plus OST. Doesnt mean that couldn't be improved upon of course but it's far from terrible. Much better than what I ever saw from my old S8.

Heres another site comparing the 2 phones that state the a70 has super amoled and the mate 20x has amoled. It also states that both phones are HDR:
http://phonesdata.com/en/compare/5742/5451/
The A70 doesnt support HDR10 or Dolby vision or anything like and doesnt have a HDR compatible screen. Netflix hides its HDR content, youtube doesnt give you the option to choose a HDR stream etc.
That website doesnt mention HDR at all under the screen section. Notice it mentions both HDR10 and the DCI-P3 wide colour gamut for the mate 20x but not the A70? That's because the A70 doesnt support them.
It totally depends on your taste of phone, I don't like to waste more than 250 euro on a phone since I break one once a year (because I'm clumsy when I'm drunk).
I bought my samsung a70 for 240 euro by my local carrier (without a loan or an subscription) if I look online for the mate 20x it cost around 900 euro which is way to much for a phone for me since I only use it for whatsapp, discord some browsing and watching a movie in the train.
You should check these marks if u want to buy that phone:
- Do i want to look cool with a 900 euro phone from huaweii or a cool samsung phone
- Do I want super deluxe photo's or decent photo's
- Do I want to watch super crisp netflix movies on my phone or do I want to watch movies just a little bit crisp and cropped to fit for full screen
- Do I want a bigger screen or do I want a phone that just fits in your pocket
- Do I want to pay 3 times the price for a phone or just a small price for a perfectly fine phone
I would recommend if u have the money the huawei mate 20x but if u don't just go with the samsung one and go to a movie or smthg with a nice girl with the money you spared

S20U have big software problem?

Hi to all
I watch so many YT videos about camera comparison and see so many bad things about S20U camera. Is that because still camera software in beta or it is just what S20U is?
I watch S20U vs:
- Note 10 Plus,
- Huawei P40 Pro,
- Xiaomo Mi10,
- Iphone 11 Pro
And yes S20U have new big camera sensor but still they are no big improvements in night shoot's, astophotography, zoom, night videos, portret and etc.. And every phone have better camera in most situation. Whats wrong with S20U? Will Samsung fix this with software updates?
All the best
Not quite sure how you think most phones have a better camera but from someone who ACTUALLY has an S20U I can tell you this camera is fantastic. And with every update will continue to get better and better.
Feel free to not purchase it though. It isn't for everyone.

Come on now. You know that's not exactly true. This phone has pretty serious camera issues, from poor optics to focus problems, etc. It's not a terrible camera, but it is not worth the price tag. Samsung has to do a lot more work on the software side to make it better. I've had the phone since launch and while updates did improve things, it still falls short compared to other flagships. Both iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4 take better photos (I have those phones too), as does Note 10+ in most cases (I have it too for comparison). With that said, it is possible to take good photos with the S20 Ultra, so it's not all bad.
If anyone bought the Ultra Solely for the camera then that was Dumbassville! Other than the camera however The 120hz screen rocks, 5g works good depending on your coverage area. It's also a speedy phone. At least my US Unlocked 512gb version is. But if your buying the phone expecting a mobile photography studio like Samsung is hyping in their ads you can forget that BS now because that's what it is. Just plain BS! That is not to say the cameras can't take good pictures or the software won't get better. It just means if your expecting a DSLR or Wonder Miracle camera on a phone it ain't happening. There is a reason those $10,000 DSLR lenses take great night time photos and cost so much. You will never achieve that quality on a phone camera.
I'm one of the few people who buys phone not for the camera but making receiving calls, YouTube media consumption social networking camera is bottom of the list.
I think the camera and video is brilliant and better then most flagship. Its good for an average consumer use for expert photographers not to sure as don't know enough. The good thing is most of us aren't experts.
I prefer the s20 plus as its slimmer and has less protruding camera. Its better buy then huawei as g services are missing and better software and screen. Better then oppo due to mainly software and less curved screen. Oppo could have been my choice were it not for the curved screen. I hate that, most overrated and wasted tech.
Thats my rant and impression of Samsung s20.

That would make more sense than paying 17% more for a 6% larger screen. The battery is also 11% larger, but the plus is also lighter and thinner, especially at the camera bump. The cameras are the most significant difference between the two, it would only make sense for that to be the main motivating factor in paying the premium (especially considering the plus is tending to get marked down more).

The camera is literally the one reason to go for the Ultra vs. the Plus. Screen and battery size difference are insignificant in this decision, so no, Samsung does need to step up and make the Ultra worthy of its name. With that said, I am not expecting DSLR quality. I have a 5D Mark IV and some very high end lenses and know the difference. However, matching or beating the Pixel 4 series or the iPhone 11 Pro shouldn't be a problem for the camera setup on the Ultra, except Samsung botched the implementation badly.

Agree with you.
Pay 1400$ for S20U
- BATTERY not good than 11 pro max or oppo find x2 or p40 pro
- Exynos 990 so bad ( ex 990 < kirin 990 < sd 865)
- Camera can not take the moment well as iphone or other phone. Can't focus well, but photo and video day light is ok.
- screen ok but oppo find x2 pro's screen are better
Sorry for my bad english.

Question Google Camera (GCam) for Moto G60?

This phone's camera is trash, especially in night time. Not that I believe more mega pixels = better quality; but I was under the impression that the larger sensor behind 108 MP should collects more light and give better night time photos. The sensor is probably fine, but Moto's image processing is crap.
I tried a Google Camera version meant for Moto G 5G with 48 MP primary camera. The results are still bad.
Is there any specific GCam version for this phone right now?
I was planning to buy it for the 108MP camera and My UX, should I consider getting the Realme 8 pro or a different device instead? Not going for the redmi because of their embarrassingly bad MIUI.
I bought this phone for the UI which is closer to AOSP. So far the performance and UI are pretty good and refreshing to use after using MIUI for years. Battery is pretty good as well.
I still hope a proper Google Camera version optimized for this phone would improve the image quality by a huge margin as it's the same sensor used in Redmi Note 10 Pro (Max).
I have never used Realme phones, so can't recommend one. I'm sick of Redmi phones as well because of their crappy MIUI and tried a Moto phone for the first time.
Thank you for your reply! I would be very grateful if you could answer a few more of my questions about this device:
What would you consider some pros and cons of buying this as of now?
Does the 120hz screen make a significant difference?
Have you noticed any differences in normal video quality and HDR10?
If you've used an AMOLED display phone before, have you noticed any significant difference between both?
Thank you in advance!
I had some luck using the Gcam "GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v2.1_Wichaya_V3.1.1". I don't know if we're able to post links here, but just google that and you'll be able to find. I'm trying to build a config file for G60, but i have no previous experience so i'm having a hard time.

Thank you for your reply! I would be very grateful if you could answer a few more of my questions about this device:
What would you consider some pros and cons of buying this as of now?
Does the 120hz screen make a significant difference?
Have you noticed any differences in normal video quality and HDR10?

I recently bought it, you won't notice significant difference in 60 and 120 hz refresh rates but touch input rate makes pointer to follow quick.
Display is good you'll mostly notice diffrence between amoled and lcd at night.
I'm very attracted towards stock android no lags no glitches no mi or samsung or Microsoft's crappy apps I'm very happy with the phone. It's a chonky boy

The refresh rate does make a difference. Once you use this and go back to 60 hz it can hard to bear. It was for me. But most midrange phones these days have atleast 90hz which is fine
I have a G30(11k) and G40 fusion(14k)
G40 fusion is miles ahead in performance, stability, and features
When it comes to refresh rate, the difference between 120hz and 90hz is noticeable, at least to my eyes

Question 6 year old phone has bigger pictures than the S21 FE?

The following is the highest resolution photo that I got each of these two phones to produce with their best camera settings:
Galaxy J5 (2016): 4128x3096
Galaxy S21 FE: 4000x3000
How does a 6 year old low-end budget phone create photos with more pixels than a 2022 almost-flagship phone?
N10+ is 4032×3024
I wouldn't sweat it... smaller/more pixels in the same size sensor doesn't necessarily mean better images. Sensor size maybe different.
Either way the difference is negligible.

Shouldn't today's phone's produced pictures that are much bigger than that of 6 years ago?

Not necessarily. Even blowing it up you can't see that difference unless you count the pixels. Which produces the better image? Bottom line.
More doesn't mean better.
Individual pixel lense quality matters more.
Larger form factor sensors generally also perform better. These sensors are small so it limits the amount of quality pixels you can use.
That sensor size also limits the amount of light they can gather vs a full frame cam sensor. The small phone cam lens also gather far less light than say a 35 or 50mm lense does.

No because a higher resolution doesn't equal to a better quality image. Improvements to the lens, the sensor and the hardware that does the actual image processing is way more important.
And the S21 has optical image stabilizing which the J5 doesn't have.
Seems like if the S21 FE's camera is better, it's by a drop.

Exactly. Resolution is irrelevant at some point... especially if the individual pixels can't grab a good noise nulling and/or image sample.
12mp is considered ideal for this size sensor, even full frame pro cam sensors top out at around 26mb. One of these will rip a smartphone cam to shreds.
I prefer optical over digital IS.

From the little that I tried the S21 FE's camera and compared its photos to the J5, the former's quality doesn't seem much better than the latter. Maybe a drop.

Still using the N10+ which grabs good images. What's interesting is I've seen it do the smudging that the S23U users are complaining about. It's not cam shake, light level, wind, shutter speed, focus or subject movement caused; it's seemingly random. Very noticeable with cat fur. Seems to be settings related as it doesn't always happen.
Lately using the same firmware I'm not seeing it (changed the settings)... strange. It's quit annoying when it happens and no way to fix it with post editing.
It's just strange that an almost-flagship phone (the S21 FE) has a camera that isn't much of an upgrade in terms of picture quality over a low end 2016 J series phone.
I doubt it. Especially in low light the software kicks in and makes the j5 look old. OIS obviously helps to get steady shots.

The N10+ was a quantum leap from my old S4+ in everything including cams.
In my opinion the N10+ was Samsung's overall zenith in flagship design. Android 9 was Gookill's zenith. Both started screwing up on subsequent models/versions. The lack of expandable storage is both an overreach and reprehensible; it doesn't serve the consumer but rather Google's and Samsung's agendas. Once Samsung stop calling it a Note it was broke...
The low-end A12 from December 2020 has a 48 MP camera, while the S21 FE has a 12 MP camera.

Both are underwhelming. Guess Samsung thought the 48mp cam would make the A12 more appealing. Oddly it has the expandable storage and 3.5mm jack.
A used N10+ is a more capable phone than both, Samsung's a mess. They've been undermining themselves for years now. Poor leadership.

Well, in the case of the low-end A12 it may be excusable, but for the $700 priced S21 FE it’s inexcusable. Along with the S21 FE’s lousy battery that drains much quicker than the advertised amount. Not to mention its touch and scroll glitches.

My point exactly. You can buy a new N975U1* for less than $700 even now. Better yet they're factory loaded with Android 10 although I think Pie is better. Poor SOT has gotten to be a major issue since the N10+; Samsung's solution is to put increasing larger capacity Li's and even then the N10+ is getting better SOT.
Great... heavier, thicker phones with megapixel counts like the pro movie cams have (except their performance justify it).
Samsung's morphed into a hyped up hot mess
*new Exynos variants are priced considerably higher (demand) because they can be rooted. Otherwise they are less capable than the Snaps.

Likely not. There were/are some sites charging money to do so remotely. They're using their Knox Developer privileges to so, until Samsung catches up to them. I think that's what's going on... my interest is minimal.
Giving anyone remote access permission is unacceptable and bricking a good N10+ is something I personally wouldn't risk as they run well stock (and securely even on Pie) after being optimized.

It's not a Snapdragon thing, it's a Samsung U.S. (North America in general I think) thing
Meaning, the S21FE Snapdragon variant CAN be rooted (from European regions) but the S21FE Snapdragon U.S. variant cannot.

I hadn't heard that but it's more of a curiosity for me. What you said doesn't seem to be true for the N10+'s at all.
Why would Samsung mix distributed* both Exynos and Snaps in the same region? I see a small amount of the Exynos variat N10+'s here in the US for sale but believe they all came from out of country.
*aside from rooting the Snaps are invariably the more desirable variant.
