Why I chose the Nitro (for $50 on-contract!) over Galaxy Nexus/Note

First, here's how I scored my Nitro for $50 (on contract).
Currently AT&T (instore and online) is selling the Nitro with an instant $100 off.
If you go to http://www.retailmenot.com/view/att.com and click through their AT&T Promo link that's another $100 off. So now the phone costs $50 (plus tax) and free 2-day shipping.
As you can see in my signature, I'm a Nexus One user. The very MINUTE the phone was available for order on their site, I did.
I was a devout Nexus fan (actually, still love my Nexus One), I love the notion of no-bloat and completely open ended system. When the Galaxy Nexus was due, you can imagine my excitement. Now imagine my complete frustration with the constant delays and misinformation. I was also quite disappointed that Google decided to put the 1.2GHz Exynos CPU in their supposed "Hardware platform pusher" phone. Blah!
But during the time I eagerly awaiting the GNex, I see a new offering from Samsung in the salacious Galaxy Note! a 5.3" beauty with all the guts of the GNex (actually, a FASTER processor with 1.4GHz Exynos) and a stylus with Wacom certified screen!...But dammit!, no US version! The International GSM version will work on AT&T, but NOT 4g LTE! And the Note's Verizon LTE version would have the snapdragon with the Adreno 205 GPU in it (OLD, WEAK GPU!!).
Too many strikes against the front runners and too many yummies for the Nitro underdog!

Are you able to upgrade a line using this, or is it just New Customers/Add a line?

I'd imagine this is for New Customers only...At least for the extra $100 from retailmenot:

I can't get any of the discounts to show up, at least over a week later.

Sadly that RetailMeNot discount could be regional. I've heard quite a few others had issues getting the discount to work in other areas (I'm in the NJ area).

Another good reason to choose the Nitro over those two - no screen burn-in.

There are more to processors than the mhz rating. the 1.2 A9 in the gnex absolutley destroys the nitro's 1.5....Also take a look at the development between both, enough said!

Yes, based on leaked FCC specs 3G only, no LTE. But this is kind of speculation only.

"absolutely destroys" the Nitro's 1.5? Really? Any actual proof of that? And I'm not talking about specsheet comparisons, I mean actual benchmarks.
Seriously though, I've been searching the net and can't find any decent benches for comparison between these 2.

The Snapdragon APQ8060 is just naturally slower then the 1.2GHz OMAP4 in the GNexus, because it's Cortex A9.
Qualcomm used a modified Cortex A8 design for more battery efficiency, but you sacrifice horsepower.
Now the 1.2GHz Exynos chip... that is a battery drainer, but the amount of horsepower that thing has is just godly.

Time after time benchmarks have proven to be inaccurate. The Galaxy Nexus's processor is much faster than the Nitro's.

i was replying to the following poster's request for a benchmark, i provided one. you are free to interpret it anyway you choose, even discount it entirely, it makes no difference to me. I interpret it to correspond to my real world use of the nitro. as experience proves time and again, it's not always a faster processor that makes a fine performing phone.

This is yet more conjecture. After more digging I've attached an image I found from one of Anandtech.com's articles, showing a comparison chart between the ARM Cortex A8, A9 and our Nitro's Qualcomm Scorpion.
Indeed while searching for more technical information on the architecture of the APQ8060 chip I found some info that it's based on the ARM Cortex A8, but if you look at the attached image...The Scorpion is mostly equal to or HIGHER SPEC than the A9, such as in pipeline-depth and NEON.
Now, since we're talking about System-on-Chip here, let's not forget what GPU the GNex is using vs. the Nitro... PowerVR SGX540 vs. the Adreno 220 in the Nitro. Doesn't take much searching to find the Adreno 220 is superior to the SGX540 and here's a few benches showing the Nitro higher on the performance results vs. GNex:

As to the remark that benchmarks are inaccurate...Well I certainly agree that I've seen my fair share of benches being debunked or showing inaccurate info based on outdated software, but at least their TESTED results and not just opinions based on spec sheets.

319 ppi. That puts ppi right there with the iPhone 4S, but on a much larger AMOLED display. If the form factor is sexy, and the rest of the specs line up right, I'm going to have a hard time not throwing my wallet at this device.

I am a huge fan of the galaxy series. Once I got the Mesmerize and now the Epic 4G Touch I have to say I will be a galaxy customer for a long while. All I can say is hopefully it drops soon enough for the price to drop a little but they time my upgrade comes. Unemployment sucks. But based on Sammy's past history I have to believe the GS III will be nothing less then Epic on many levels.

With all of these rumored specs that seem to blow any current phone away... I am so happy my upgrade is in the next few months. Although the price will most likely reflect the quality, I'm prepared to sell my arm and leg for this phone

If and when I dump the S2...The only reasons will be for LTE and Quad Core which is what Ive heard the S3 is supposed to have...I like the Note but the screen is a little too big...Had it in my hand in Best Buy Mobile...But I think Id stick to the 4.7 hopefully what the S3 will have... and stay with Sprint for the Unlimited...

Bolded the part that is relevant to your question. Nothing is concrete yet, but the Exynos 4412 rumored to be going into the SGSIII may be the first quad core LTE compatible SoC.

I'd love to see them do that. Samsung makes their own screens. There's nothing saying that they can't make a screen close to or better than iPhone's "retina display".

not only do samsung make their own screen, they also make it for apple. apple is samsung's second largest customer after HP

The only thing I wish my E4GT had differently is a higher resolution screen. It's going to be awhile before any device makes me want to upgrade. Though, this is pretty lust worthy.

That sold my mother in law. She was going to get the SGSII from NTT DoCoMo until her daughter beat her to it. I told her to hold off a few more months to wait for this phone - glad I did. Now hopefully we'll see this to Sprint and my MVNO sometime next year, right around the time that we're eligible for upgrades! (I can wait a year, 4G isn't bad in Chi-town!)

I read something about Samsung doing a worldwide announcement for all markets, does that mean it'll be available for US carriers (Sprint specifically) when everyone else in the world gets it? I'd hate for the rest of the world to get it in say June and the US gets it a few months later like with the SG2.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Unless both Samsung and the carriers learned from last year and they're getting the carrier differentiation done now with less hang ups. I'm not in a massive hurry though. I still dig my E4GT, and the later the GSIII is released the further along Sprint's LTE rollout will be.

With the way they are marketing it, I hope that they release the US versions around the same time. I have a feeling samsung is learning, and is pushing for more unified releases. They know that the sgs2 dominated the smart phone market, so I would assume they also know the sgs3 will attract just as many, if not more customers. Especially with this much hype, and there own event to announce it. I would expect they would be smart enough to get it on as many carriers as they can, as soon as possible.

I always felt it was stupid that theres different release dates for phones based on where you live. And the fact that we were always last made it worst. If they start releasing their phones at once worldwide i think that'll be a good move and every other manufacturer will probably follow in the same direction. At least I hope. There's nothing worse then wanting a phone that's available in another country and not urs..

AT&T VS International?

So from my understanding,
The international one is Tegra 3 while the ATT model is a S4?
Is there a huge difference in performance between the two?

Yes but the S4 has proven that quad isn't necessarily better than dual! The performance is almost the same, in some cases the S4 is even better (not THAT better tho) but in others (like multitasking and gaming) the Tegra 3 really shines

Considering that ICS is GPU accelerated when It comes to UI, wouldnt the T3 version feel smoother than S4? (gestures and UI interactions, not loading speeds) Since its GPU is better capapble than the Adreno 225. I mean thats why the GNEX doesnt feel as smooth as a SGS2 for example, the dual core TI OMAP has some seriously powerful CPU but subpar GPU to push that 720p screen...

I have made the decision to passup the X and to get the XL instead. For the following reasons:
1. better battery life.
2. LTE
3. More snappiness due to OS utilization?
4. Quadcore is useless to me in real life. Why? because the first quadcore desktop CPU launched almost 7 years ago. Even until now, software developers are just slowly learning to utilize more than two cores.

The snapdragon s4 is based on krait which is totally different from A15. Performance is only slightly better than A9 in terms of integer but vastly better for floating point and memory bandwidth. The Adreno 225 is much slower than the geforce in tegra3. But it wont be felt in general UI and games since they hardly tax the 220 before it and even the several times slower 205 runs most games like deadspace without a problem.

i actually bought the Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme quite a few years ago and the only thing i have had to upgrade for gaming is the video card and RAM. i imagine i'm going to get a few more years of high quality gaming out of this PC before i need to upgrade. i don't have DDR3 RAM or PCI Express 3, but i doubt it matters much. i just hope the CPU doesn't die before then! i'm just shocked at how long i've been able to stay on the quad, and now they have 8 cores?

Trying to dump the X for the XL(AT&T) right now.

You get one thing with Teg3 you don't with the S4. A really cool game. It's built in to the system and really visualizes the Teg3 chip in action. And being the only Teg3 phone on the market, it's a One X exclusive.

I'm sounding *****y but I'm really happy with the phone. After some charging cycles I'm getting decent battery life based on the way I use it. I'm going on a trip Friday which will be the real test as I'm much heavier on my phone when I'm on the road. I'd still recommend it and I like the larger amount of storage. So don't let my sarcasm put people off, it's still a great device.

Question 6GB version battery performance?

I'm almost decided. I'm buying the G30, and the battery is one of the main reasons.
I'm tempted to buy the Amazon-exclusive 6GB version. Everything else on board is identical; just 6GB instead of 4GB RAM.
However, would the 6GB affect battery performance vs the 4GB version, whose battery benchmarks are pretty much where I need them? Does anyone know?

Depends somewhat on the memory type.
My Note 10+ has a older generation of ram memory than the N20U. With 12 gb of ram all I notice is snappy performance with good battery life.
The impact of 2 gb of extra ram on battery life should be very small. 6 gb is the minimum I would have so it's a no brainer to go for the 6 gb variant.

Right now I have two browser open. You'll want the 6 gb. I reccomend staying away from Android 11, it's a hog that gives little in return.

Yes, the G30 is no flagship but it's got exactly what I want: great battery, it's not too large or bulky, dual sim, it doesn't have MIUI nor much bloatware, has decent camera.
I don't think I have many more options with somewhat decent specs, esp. at 6GB.
There's the G10 but it's got bad Wi-Fi, and all the 'power' models are worse in other specs, I think.

I never use wi-fi, it's a security risk. No need for it if you have an unlimited plan except as a hot spot.
By enabling only wifi updates then setting Playstore etc to only do automatic updates by wi-fi you can stop those apps auto-updates from raising hell. I use the wi-fi options like that
Get best rated phone with best specs in the class you're looking at. The more of that model sold the better the support and parts availability.
Consider used models in excellent condition as well; example, a Note 10+ 512 gb can be had for $650. Just check the display for burn in with Screen Test before accepting. B&H Photo gives you a 100% return policy on anything you buy from them.
Batteries are fairly easy to replace even on the 10+ so don't sweat that.

Nah, that approach doesn't work for me at all. It's not even about class, as not all the phones in each class have the exact same config.
Firstly, almost all flagship phones are huge anyway, and I don't like huge. Then they almost never have better batteries than this. A good phone is no use if you can't keep it on.
Then, many excellent phones use MIUI, which I loathe. And so on. I'm not above used and refurbished models, but only when they fit my requirements.
I don't have an unlimited data plan cause there's no need for that. I use 2-3GB total and that's how much I need.

Is a Good phone. 90hz, Awesome! Big battery. It depends on the user how long it last...
If you don't use wifi, bluetooth, nfc and apps that eats power will last for a long time.

New, not from the store, around 100$, in my region/country. 6/128 gb
I use Note 10+ 5g, the most beautifull phone. Good? Not so much. That 90hz (G30)over 60hz (Note 10), on the G30 matters! Huge price! I pay around 650 $ last year, in the summer. G30 moves better. Less bloatware.

Bluetooth seems to use very little battery on my 10+ in standby mode or in actual use. In 12 hours including 4 hours active usage it was at 1%.
Samsung's done a good job with their bt Buds+ it would seem.

I get 8 hours of Screen-on time & still 13% is left.

Question Is the S21 Fe worth to buy?

Well it depends. If you are interested in photography and video quality and you live in a region where it comes with the Snapdragon, then yes it may be a good deal. I'm in Europe and we finally have the Snapdragon on it. Plus, the preorder comes with a free set of Buds2 and a Youtube 4 month subscription. If however, you can get the S21 with the Snapdragon and you don't care about having a Hybrid 3x zoom instead of a proper optical zoom then that may be a better deal for you. It's clearly not a bad phone but you need to see if it's a good deal according to your particular interests. I've seen reviewers already bashing it, but again, for Europe it makes sense because we always had Exynos on the S21's, till now.

I'm in Europe and we finally have the Snapdragon on it. Plus, the preorder comes with a free set of Buds2 and a Youtube 4 month subscription. If however, you can get the S21 with the Snapdragon and you don't care about having a Hybrid 3x zoom instead of a proper optical zoom then that may be a better deal for you. It's clearly not a bad phone but you need to see if it's a good deal according to your particular interests. I've seen reviewers already bashing it, but again, for Europe it makes sense because we always had Exynos on the S21's, till now.

Damn! I love photography and videography so this could be a good phone for me. They give free buds 2 and a Youtube subscription in Europe if you pre-order this phone, that's why the price is high on the website. Yeah, I have the S20 Fe snapdragon edition so I will be getting the same snapdragon when I buy the S21 Fe but I saw on the Samsung website the rate is so high for me. Also, when I click the buy now option to check the version the page is not loaded as an error, I think the page is not ready yet.

I found that both the S20 FE and S21 FE have the same camera sensors for all cameras, so I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading in your particular case.

The only difference is S21 Fe has Gorilla glass Victus and Snapdragon 888 processor so I think I'll get this phone for the processor!

S21 FE is smaller and more compact than it's predecessor, thinner and packing almost everything. Big plus for me but will wait a bit for price to settle since I will go for 256GB version.
Remember, no SD card support.

I don't need an sd card slot because I backup only particular photos and videos always so the 128GB is enough for me!

I had a hard time chosing between the S22 and S22+, but then I found the S21FE. Which is just in between. Perfect size!

I switched from exynos Note20 Ultra 5G to S21 FE and will never look back . Battery lasts longer despite identic capacity due to SG, performance is better, 4k was useless without 120hz. Love the dimensions, size, cameras.

Buy it. It's a great phone. I moved from a pixel 6. The pixel cannot keep sustained performance. Using it for Uber and lyft and the phone was super hot and the camera and fingerprint stops working. Do not get the Pixel which is what people tend to consider when they want the s21 FE. Buy the S21 FE and be happy bro.
