Question Nova Launcher Lag - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

Anyone else using Nova Launcher (7) and have lag when opening the fold to full screen? I have turned off all animations, but that just causes it to be blank during the home screen draw lag.
I've tried switching to OneUI, BUT I can't get myself to give up all the customization of Nova and go with stock However, the waiting for Nova to draw the home screen when opening the fold is a pain.
Thanks

I have noticed it as well

I have a not noticed a lag.
Do you see it everytime you open?
Edit : I am wrong..I do notice the lag

Yep, +1. Annoying but it's actually not limited to Nova. I just did a quick test with Lawnchair and it does the same thing. It seems like it relaunches the Home Launcher when the display is opened.

I have Nova and notice zero lag. I hope you figure it out.

Try clearing system cache as well as nova cache. That fixed it for me

Thanks for the idea. Didn't help me though.
Sometimes it's like Nova doesn't even try and I actually get the Samsung launcher until I manually hit the home bottom then Nova pops up.

Is there a way to freeze the default samsung launcher?

Having sometimes lag when swiping up from the bottom (i'm using gestures) to get out of apps. It often does some kind of "blink" lag.
When i googled Nova and z fold compatibility, i found disheartening results... as the developer said foldables are gimmicks for now and he's clearly not going to support foldables soon...
you can see both threads here :
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/comments/iryjax
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/comments/hl6v8o

i removed Nova launcher for the FOld3. had it more like 10 years. Oh well. Also NOva can't custom front screen and inside screen. have to be the same (didn't like it)

Just wanted to chime in that after investigations the blink lag happens for me when I swipe up out of apps to return to home and try to launch another app too quickly afterwards. After swipping up, I need to wait 1s before launching another app otherwise screen will blink.

Nova fcking itself by not supporting the foldables. They were ahead of the times years ago, now just f'n everyone that stood behind them so many years.

I got rid 1s have to wait before after hitting home then launching the next app by turning off animations. This doesnt help with the opening delay, but it does take care of the false redraw home screen that appears for 1 sec delaying the ability to launch the next program (fixed at least for me). Only issue for me now is a blank screen for 1-2 second when I open/unfold the device on the home screen.

Are you all on Nova 7? Nova 6 is working perfectly for me.

I'm getting this same hang/lag with my pixel 5a on nova 7...
Tried reverting back to 6 and it's still doing it. Maybe I didn't notice before but I swear there is a hang after leaving an app that I have to wait in order to do anything further like open the drawer or use a gesture.

Follows is the response I got today from the Nova Developer. Too bad. I told him about this thread and the lag issues in counter response...
The usage of foldable devices is still very miniscule compared to that of "normal" devices so it really isn't worth the development time or effort for us to try and make Nova fully compatible with the dual screens of foldable devices or dual screen devices.
There are so many things that have to be done for dual screen layouts such as thinking about how icons behave and look on both screens, how do widgets look and behave and so much more.
Currently, even after being around for a couple of years now, we feel it's just not worth it to spend the endless amounts of time that is needed to work on these devices, knowing that things will change repeatedly over the coming months or next couple of years.
Due to the costs involved in making these devices, the pricing isn't likely to drop significantly enough over the next couple of years to make these devices mainstream, which in turn means we simply won't be able to support them fully at this time or in the near future.
Nova will work. The only issue you'll have is you won't be able to have a separate layout for the front screen and the rear screen. Layouts will use the same layout, and might look slightly different due to screen resolution and DPI between the two screens.

Honestly the layout doesn't bother me that much, what is annoying is the lag. I didn't have problem on my Mate 20 X but someone above mentioned having the same problem with a Pixel.
Not sure if the lag is because of the fold/samsung oneUI or unrelated.

I've just gotten Nova working independently on both screens, but it took quite a lot of hacking to accomplish - Had to clone the app to get a second copy that could then be configured independently, and a tasker/bixby routines/autotools combination to detect and switch the launcher depending if the phone is folded or not.
Only complaint apart from the occasional slow switch to the other launcher is that the clone version of the app can't be validated for my pro purchase, so I've just got the front in free mode, with the inner screen running the pro version

Task manager refresh rate bug!

Task manager is a native HTC Sense app that allows us to kill specific (or all) running apps that are usually left open in the background. Kind of ironic that they don't close even after we swipe them away from the multitasking page huh? :what:
Nonetheless, the fuss that has been circulating the One X's screen issues are far from over. It all begun with the screen flickering and the constant shaking in some of the apps which drove us almost insane. Then came up that annoying little yellow spot that seemed to follow us around and always grabbed our attention.
But now we face (or I face) another irritating screen bug that needs a quick fix. For some one like me, who constantly uses the Task manager (for killing some, but not all) would greatly appreciate the refresh rate of the screen to increase to avoid stains of the terribly executed Sense 4 UI. I hate having to see the transition stain of apps sliding up after killing that of which is on top of them.

Vodafone Australia manipulates the phone so much until its unusable. Never knew a Quad core with Tegra™ 3 would run so slow. I might return it for the third time and get a Lumia 900 instead.

Download the 'Screen test' app by AMBERFOG from the market and you would see how slow the screen refresh rate is when flicking through different templates.. would be more noticeable (if not obvious) when compared to another device.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
The screen flickering using the Screen test has improved a lot since the 1.28 update. but I still notice a very noticeable lag in HTC Sense. I dont understand how a quad-core CPU struggles to run as it should. And what gets to me the most is the fact that the One S is faster than the one X flag ib ever aspect. We pay big money for a phone that over heats all the time (reached 48 degrees, had to put it in the freezer for a minute or two to cool it down) and the constant lag in HTC Sense and reboots and lags here and there.
The only good thing so far is that they have already released two updates but lets see how long it will take Vodafone will they finally release the 1.29 update -_-

Did I miss a meeting? Who said they're over? The flickering, notification bar corruption, funkiness in the camera app, and probably all other non h/w display issues are graphics drivers related. In the flickering thread it was posted on 5/2 that HTC's identified the issue and an update's (not 1.29) forthcoming. If after that there are still graphics problems then it's safe to bring out the exclamation points.
I hadn't noticed but mine does it, can't say it bothers me at all, even if it stays that way for ever.
Can someone post the apk?

This is incorrect. Swiping in the task manager closes tasks correctly, as you would expect. This is easily verified by closing an app that has a splash screen on startup. The app will show the splash screen the next time you start it up after swiping to close it.

Dude I have the one X and the ICS multitasking sucks no doubt. Sometimes I close apps using the swipe up mechanism and they would still be running in the native built in app. Heck I close the Music players and music keeps playing. You're telling me that the ICS multitasking does a good job then you clearly kbow nothing about multitasking.
Sometimes I open an app and minimize it leave in the background for about 30 seconds, open it again and it has reload! What the hell is this, its yhe most annoying when you are using the Web browser and it keep reloading the page every time you minimize it nd by that say good bye to your data.
You want to see multitasking? Get a Nokia N9. By far the best multitasking phone ever! I loved mine and then I swapped it for this rubbish One X. The N9i never had any issues and it got 2 major updates twice in less than 6 months and another is coming and android still cant do multitasking and random apps are always running in the background! Dafuq!

I never said it does a good job, I said it does close apps (which was the opposite of the claim that I was replying to). And it does close them. And that includes music players. (I've only tested a couple; I don't claim to have bothered trying every player.) Yes, the music can continue briefly after swiping; that's likely buffer-related, I'd guess. Fact is that with the apps I've tried, music playing does stop a couple of seconds after the swipe, though.

I'm well aware of this; I have the exact same problem myself on three ICS devices. It's one of the worst features of Android. However, the comment I was replying to has absolutely nothing to do with this. It makes no difference whether you use a task killer, or swiping in the recent apps list; ICS will still randomly kill recent apps whenever it feels the need to do so.

Because sense is badly coded, and the s will win in benchmarks because its got a smaller screen, on a pc running a game at 600x800 will be much faster than 1440x900.

I've just closed the music player using the most recent app list thing that comes as a new feature in ICS and music is still playing. It does work on some apps and it foesnt work on some. Its just useless, it ahould either kill all or should have never existed in the first place. Im only saying this as I was a N9 user and multitasking on it was 100% better than this.
As for the One S being better, well I dont see why they make the One X the flagship when it gets beaten by a cheater and supposedly less capable phone? As for the resolution example you gave, well if the make a better screen they should use a better graphics card, its really not that hard.

It's not a graphics "card" per say, it's a system-on-chip.
HTC One X International: Tegra 3 SoC (1.5 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, Nvidia ULP GeForce)
HTC One S: Snapdragon S4 MSM8260A SoC (1.5 GHz dual-core Krait, Adreno 225)
That said, benchmarks suggest it likely *is* a better GPU in the One X than the One S, eg.:
http://glbenchmark.com/result.jsp?orderby=438&brand=HTC&benchmark=glpro21&var=avg&gpu=
Problem is, it needs to be 78% better than the Snapdragon just to equal it, based on the difference in pixel counts. That's a big ask, without vastly increasing power consumption (and hence, vastly reducing battery life or making the phone much bigger and heavier.)

Battery Capacity
The Leagoo Site currently shows a 3200mAH battery..
Are there different versions of it or have they changed it recently?
I was ready to order it but noticed this so I guess I should ask first.
Battery
I'm kinda late coming in here but. The battery is 3200. I have been very happy with the battery life. It will Last all day easy with regular use. However The phone has been a real disapointment. I mean it was under $150. So.... yah.

Why has it been a real disappointment mate?
Please point out what issues you have faced with it..
There aren't many reviews on it so it would really help if you enlighten me as I'm still thinking of getting one but haven't decided yet..
A few things I've noticed.
Typing is a pain. The interface continually multi types letters when I hit space if I try to type to fast. Like it has trouble keeping up. It also hits L instead of backspace a lot. Also when using apps or browsing online the keyboard doesn't pop up. It pops up probably 50% of the time. Some text fields it just doesn't pop up. I had to download hackers keyboard because it creates a button in the drop down menu that allows me to manually open the keyboard.
The hardware otherwise lives up to what I was expecting very smooth interface, however ever since the first update the clock and notifications on the top bar as well as the setting menu items are flipped. Example. Clock and battery go from top right to top left. And other little nuances.
I don't use the stock launcher so I can't comment on it.
I don't remember dropping the phone however my mic no longer works. So I can't make phone calls without a bluetooth device. I suppose It's possible I damaged it somehow but it's only been about a month I've had it.
I'd rather just get a new Samsung phone then deal with shipping for a repair or replacement.
The bluetooth doesn't seem to work as well as my old phone or tablet. For example my galaxy tab and old razr phone show song titles and info on my bluetooth car stereo but the elite 2 does not and goes out sometimes. The connection can be very finicky. Sometimes it drops out for a few seconds every minute.
The GPS is not very accurate. Constantly adjusting putting me a few streets over.
The screen does not feel smooth like other devices I'm used to. What I mean by that is as I drag my finger across it my finger seems more likely to drag hard or stick to the screen. It's not terrible or a deal breaker but I do notice it.
I guess ultimately it was inexpensive. I should have expected it to feel inexpensive. I tried really hard to like and defend it but ultimately I'm not very happy with it. So if your considering it I'd say as long as the mic doesn't break it does do the whole being a phone thing well. Otherwise it's been a pain in the ass.
Hope this is helpful
Wow, that's a lot of issues.. I'm constantly liking these china phones less and less..
Well, a friend of mine has ordered it recently so I'll also test it out to see how his device goes..
Also another friend of mine ordered the elephone P3000s so I'll also check that one out before I make my final decision..
But deciding is kind of getting rougher over time..
Many thanks for your post mate! Best of luck with your case!
Well, I am more pleased with the phone than most people. It works a treat, BUT, the keyboard failing to show is a BIG PROBLEM.
Has anyone got a fix other than installing hacker keyboard? this is a ridiculous situation.
When this problem occurs on any other phone, you can clear cache + data on 'android input' in the ALL section of the apps settings and it will come back. On samsung phones 'android input' is called something else but the process is the same.
Does anyone have any clue what I need to clear to fix this on the leagoo? I've tried all clearing android keyboard + swiftkey etc, no joy.
Great device, I am really looking forward to it. I am about to order a unit for myself.
UPDATE: there is a recent OTA update which you must click CHECK UPDATE to see through the ABOUT PHONE section of settings, it is not automatically detected.
After installing this latest update, keyboard woes sorted. Very very happy with this phone for the price now.

The latest OTA update, accessible via Settings --> about phone has addressed the keyboard issue.
Unfortunately, Leagoo have proved themselves to be most dishonorable as a company.
The Elite 2 ships with 2 programs built into the ROM (NOT DELETABLE) that are packed with malware. The device downloads and installs further malware infected programs of its own accord.
beautymakeup is one offender, I forget the other.
We desperately need root for this device so that this can be addressed.

Well I couldn't find any alternative to fit my requirements at such a price, so I ordered it and finally received the device yesterday.
Almost immediately I installed the OTA update so I didn't face any hidden keyboard issues.
The phone is running smoothly no matter how much I load it up.. I've run tests: Phone Function, Speaker, Microphone, GPS, 3G, WiFi all work fine and battery is nice too! Also, I got a normal for this cpu ~28000 on AnTuTu.
Design wise I'm ok with it I would like it to be a bit thinner but I'm a freak when it comes to thickness so don't worry about it. It's ~7.5mm thick... It's almost equal to my sister's Elephone G7 in thickness only that one is a bit thinner around the edges.
I love the black version as the screen tends to blend in with the frame when off, plus the colors look great in contrast with it when on.
The screen is very bright and I use it easily at less than 25% setting and it's view-able from any angle.
I installed all my favorite apps(a few dozens of them) without any problem and today I noticed an ad popping up every now and then.
So I decided to root the device and succeeded on the second attempt using Kingo Root.
After rooting I removed that beautymakeup app and the leagoo market since I don't really need it and I'm now wondering if there's anything else that has to go without ruining anything.. so I would like to ask if these 2 should be removed or not:
1. Leagoo Launcher (can I remove it or it will cause problems to my phone's functionality?)
2. OtdLauncher (I have no idea what it is so I'm not touching it until I get something on it..)
It seems that the ad is still popping up every now and then and I don't know which app is launching it..
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am pretty bloody keen to know how you got kingo root to work? I've run it a bunch of times and not had a win.
If you have installed a replacement launcher, you should be fine to remove or freeze the old ones....but I have no idea what Otd launcher is. Anyone else?
Leagoo Elite 2 - A nice phone.
Just got mine delivered yesterday evening.
Solid built and feels good in hand.
Played with it today for two hours and all is set.
There is one issue/strange behaviour I have noticed on the handset delivered to me, navigation button lights are always ON, back/menu buttons not the home button.
Anyone else noticed this?
And as reported by another user, it feels strange sliding finger on the screen, it feels like sticky.

Try using the apk version from Kingo Android Root website, it worked for me, windows application failed for me too. But kingoroot also installs lots of bloatware. So I installed SuperSu and once it took over the root management I removed Kingo and everything that it installed using App Master
Using the App Master I have also removed all other garbage that came with the device (launchers/Leagoo Apps etc), I am using Apex Launcher.
App Master gives you the option to take backup of the APP you are removing, so use that option and if something goes wrong, restorte the removed APP.
Installed xposed, MinMinGuard (removes in APP Ads) & Amplify
Overall phone is performing very smooth, not checked it with heavy games/apps as this one is a gift for my Mom, so only few extra Apps that the old lady will use.

Would like to mention that I love it's speakers, sound is loud, clear and natural.

I'm also not sure how.. it just worked on the second try.
Maybe uninstall the driver and try it again.. Kingo likes to install the driver it finds on its own.. Just a thought though.. no promises.
Now this is new.. today I got another OTA update notice so I decided to download it and upgrade..
But the system showed up this message "your system was damaged wireless update is disabled".
Ok, now I'm wondering what went wrong..
Could it possibly be that because my device is rooted it prevented the update? Should I unroot it?
It's kinda scary.. Has anyone else faced the same issue?

Well, like I said.. yes I've rooted my phone.
The current custom build version on it is :

That could be a reason, try unroot completely and then try.
I received the phone with LEAGOO_Elite_2_V020_20150512
You may also check with the customer support for ROM download and flash it using some custom recovery.

Well I'm not facing any "bugs" or "performance issues" as the update says so I don't really need the update.. so I'm ok without it.
However something else that drives me nuts is that even though I've uninstalled leagoo launcher and market and that weird app beauty sth but still.. I get a random ad every now and then that's been happening since I bought it before even installing anything.
I'll try to note down what is being advertised, I'm pretty sure one is "App Box" and there is another one I don't remember.
I will note them down next time they come up and research on them..
This ad appears once in every 2 or 3 days without running any specific app so I still I can't track it..

Which is the best 3D launcher for GNote PRO 12.2?

Hello, as of today, which is the best 3D launcher for the GNOTE PRO 12.2? I used TSF Shell and SPB Shell 3D on my Note 2. The transition effects looked very cool. However, they don't look good on my large screen Note PRO 12.2. Probably the effects were developed with small screens in mind. I tried Next Launcher 3D and EX, there seems to be a bug as my device got long pauses. On two occassions, I had to force boot my device.

I bought SPB Shell over 3 years ago and it's been abandoned for well over a year now. Can NOT recommend using it. I've also bought TSF, and the others, and Next Launcher looks the best so far if you want a 3D'ish environment.

Same here, bought SPB years ago when it was probably the only 3D Launcher on the market. I think the company that developed it was bought out by Yandex because for a while they changed the name. I haven't checked out the Yandex Launcher in a while, it was the updated version of SPB.
Been using Nova launcher on all my devices and am really happy with it. Nice smooth effects and lots of customization available. Liked it so much I paid for it. Active development on it.

I have a question about that one for I've been thinking about installing it on my own Galaxy Note Pro because it looked like one a beginner with launchers can manage and not too heavy on resources - and it supports icon packs. Sorry if this 'should' be self-explanatory. The Nova website does not offer me even a FAQ, let alone a complete tutorial for beginners. I want to use my own wallpapers, not theirs and I don't want to be stuck with just a choice of ready-made themes. I just want to customize what I want where I want. Will the Nova launcher allow me to do this? I have spent the last 2 days with my search engines trying to get the answer to this one question, so I'm afraid to install any launcher at all until I know.
Just install it and try it. You're not going to hurt anything, and if you decide you don't like it, then uninstall it and you'll be right back where you started. Using a 3rd party launcher doesn't do anything different except change the look and feel of your device. It's not going to mess anything up, if you don't like it you can uninstall it to go back exactly like it was previously, but be sure you go through all of the settings and mess around with it first. Look and see exactly what you can do differently. Don't just install a launcher like Nova, come to the first screen you see, and then decide you don't like it. It's kinda like taking a car for a test drive before buying it. There are tons of launchers available today, probably 10 times as many as 2 years ago. I've tried many of them. Some people like certain effects, some people like a minimalistic launcher, some people like tons of widgets, different icons, etc. Everyone likes their launcher for different reasons, but like I said, I've used many, I still try something new if I see it, but I've always gone back to Nova.

Thanks for such an encouraging message. (just got told I reached my limit for the thanks button today) If an experienced and knowledgeable user comes back to Nova so consistently, I feel yet more confident about trying it. I don't suppose there's any point in asking you, since you know that launcher so well, if you were able to use your own wallpapers? Because you're not going to tell me!
I really do have to get over being a chicken about this and dive in. It's too easy to get into real states of apprehension when I spend all my time by myself on this mountaintop and have such a vivid imagination for disasters and doom - well, alone except for my dogs and cats, who've been thinking me an idiot already for years and won't offer me any advice.
My internet connection in this least-populated county in the state isn't stable or fast enough to deal with widgets that need to update online. I like looking at them but I can't run them, same problem with news feeds. I have the stock weather and still end up checking it on my phone mostly since that is faster. System widgets only tell me what it would be little bother to go check on myself. I even wasted my money getting windowblinds on my PC because I never remembered to use it much. I put weird icons on document files so I can find them when my eyes blur on text titles late at night; it's never just for looks. I change colors to relieve my eyes when I'm staying up on the computer and tablet too long, like now. I do like to be able to find things easily and put them where they're handy for that's what I do in my house too, so I can reach for them in the dark and grab them without mishap. So that's what I'll shop for in a launcher: compulsively neat organization for doomer hermits who already spend too much time looking at a monitor.

Thank you, dear. I installed Nova this morning. Now, I'd like to put another launcher on my Note 4, so I can learn about that one at the same time, perhaps something a bit lighter. Slowing down the operation of my phone could be considered more directly dangerous to my security out here than hanging up my tablet so I'll go for simpler there. Have you a recommendation? That CM Launcher advertises itself as 'light and fast' but it also comes laden with 'security apps' and cleaners that I'm not so sure I want to bother with. I don't do much online browsing with the phone, at least not for long and I don't use social media on it. I also never share my devices because there's nobody around for miles anyway. I'd rather a launcher just be a launcher.
One Launcher that I like a lot, I use it on my phone but it won't work on my tablet because I use my tablet in landscape mode, is Buzz Launcher. Using this Launcher, you can go into their Buzz Launcher themes and download from about 500,000 different themes that other people have created. You can have as many as 9 different screens, all with different themes, and you can use their layout, their widgets and/or icons, and customize it to work with your apps. So, if you download a theme someone on the other side of the earth developed, you click on the icons they have, and if they used an app that you don't have, like if you use a different browser, the after you press on an icon, you can select the browser you use. This way, you can customize their entire themes to work with your specific phone and your specific apps. I change my themes fairly regularly, since it only takes a couple of minutes, and I feel like I have a different phone everyday.

I wish I had seen your post before I got misled by all the complaining in the reviews for that one! In fact, they ought to be paying you to write about their app's features for you've done a much better job than they did at the playstore. There seemed to be an issue of things 'disappearing' for no good reason, themes and icons and such and people were annoyed after having spent hours to download them. Then, 'folder contents get changed every time the phone restarts.' And then there's the 'upsidedown heart butt' icon that apparently no one can get rid of that has caused some consternation, lol. Oh, and multiple 'crashes' too. As usual, few indeed even say what kind of phone they have. I'm inclined to try it anyway now, since you like it and I rather liked their community-based approach to begin with.
So, what I downloaded to the phone yesterday, just to check it out, was one I haven't seen mentioned yet, (maybe just because I don't know where to look) Microsoft's Arrow launcher. I won't mind the howls of laughter. Just plain curiosity, for I haven't tried any of their stuff for android. This is another one that will only work on my phone, not for tablets. I know how annoying they can be on PC's, like everyone else who spends a lot of time on one. They remind me of certain supermarkets that like to constantly rearrange things so that every time I go in, I can't find anything and we all know Microsoft plays the same game with every new OS. They don't really want us getting to know the guts of their systems too well, do they? I was interested in finding the launcher to be free, since their Office apps clearly are anything but and in seeing if they can build an android app that isn't a resource-hogging monster. We'll see.
I've never used Arrow, but sometimes, it's necessary to go into a widget that has been designed and change the settings to customize it to your layout, your location, your calendars, etc, and I'm pretty sure the people who complain get frustrated because they can't figure out how to scale the widget, customize the information, change the icons, update the location, etc, and then they just give up. I usually try to save a couple of homepacks with widgets I like, and then I might try combining them into my own layout and custom icons too.
Getting recommendations isn't worth much, most of the time you have to try it out for yourself. For example, if you asked someone about a new movie that was just released because they just saw it, they might say it was horrible. You might go see it anyway, you find out it's scary, you love scary movies, the person who's advice you got hates scary movies, so it boils down to personal opinion.
Rolldog, may I hear more about 'homepacks and widgets?' If you have a few widgets that you like, do you, and can you, generally keep them with most other launchers you try out? Something you said before, I think it was you, about, if I got tired of a new launcher, I could go right back to Touchwiz and find my widgets and layout just where I left them, stuck in my mind and has me wondering about that little detail: why wouldn't the widgets still be there anyway, no matter what launcher I used? I ought to know all that already but I've had some 'rural life' issues keeping me too busy to spend much time with my devices or even read about them online. But I sure did a lot of shopping on the playstore, paid apps too and pretties for Nova! I'll have to watch that; it's too easy to do when I have a card on file and my budget will suffer. I have managed to discover that the ads in 'free' apps were draining my resources much more than getting the widgets I would like so if I really want something, I support the developer and ditch the ads with the constant 'phoning home' they have to do.
That 'Next' launcher has some nice 3-D effects doesn't it? But it isn't cheap, I notice.

Different Launchers

Hey, where can i get JY Launcher, as separate app? I currently have KLD and i wont reinstall firmware to change the Launcher.
A Launcher Collection would be nice. I'm interested in the JY Launcher, too.
In general I like the Smart Launcher and the Total Launcher.

I sincerely recommend Nova launcher. Fast boot (same as JY, at least on my unit), way more customisible than JY, all in all, much better deal...

Hey Folks. The absolute best Launcher at the Moment is for me the Automate Launcher. Its really new. in Playstore since 12-28-15. It easy, beautiful and safe to use in Car. I really like it a lot, you should give it a shot.

i did try this app (free) and not the launcher (3,5 euro) but i dont know if it makes any difference. The voice commands are not working properly on my device (also without this app), the navigation didn't work well either, when i enter the name of my village i can't navigate to it, there no option to select the city you enter in the searchfield (and the voice command does not work like i mentioned).
The only thin what was working was spotify. But i i think this is the best app / launcher to use in the future. It looks good, and when the voice search is working right this is the app you want.
Witch device are you using and what is working properly and what not in your automate app?
AutoMate has great potential. It has been written with phones/tablets in mind rather than MTCB HU's and so a number of things don't work for my Joying unit (eg. calls, SWC), but the maps and music player UI's are superb while driving. One to buy/watch and keep encouraging the developer to add support for MTCB.
i have a JY Rk3188 1024x600 Head Unit with a 3G USB Stick
working for me:
-swc in Background
- search an Address and it starts nokia here and has automaticly the Adress, you only have to choose car (instead of walking or Transit)
- the map thats just shows the area when you are driving
- spotify
- gmail with adresses
- events
- voice commands (i choose google in the settings), like how is the weather etc...
Other Functions i have to check.
its far the best launcher for me. Its much safer while driving.

Fully agree. The developer is very responsive and has confirmed he is working on launcher functionality. I have bought the premium version to help with development and hopefully see it evolve beyond an Android Auto clone.

I've had Nova running on mine for a while but swapped back to stock to see if there were any performance differences. From my non-scientific evaluation, uninstalling Nova and leaving the stock launcher seemed to make the head unit faster in general - especially when switching between apps. My thoughts are that the small amount of RAM these head units have causes keeping two launchers loaded takes its toll. This is assuming that the stock launcher is always running, which I think it is. What do you guys think?

Hope there is a solution for the calling issue. I'm going to try tablet talk that should be a solution
Does anyone else just use CarHomeUltra? I have it setup to launch at startup and take over the home button (soft not hard button on front of unit) and it integrates well with google music (which I use), I can display all the relevant info for driving and it has awesome shortcut functionality for anything you can think of. I even a have shortcut button to open my garage door which is done through a raspberry pi garage door opener which communicates with my veralite home automation server. This is important because I find that the wifi from my car interferes with the normal garage door opener button but this setup does its magic over the internet which controls a physical switch.
Anyways, I have tried a number different launchers so far, I cannot stand the stock ones that come with these head units, I prefer the customization of CarHomeUltra and how it simply displays the stuff that you would want to see while driving.
Now that's a connected system!!!! Nicely done.. Grab some screen shots and upload them if you.. Be interested to see your layout

I don't have that setup, so I honestly couldn't tell you.
I use automagic (like tasker) to startup my phone's wifi hotspot as soon as bluetooth connects to the stereo, then I set it up so that google music starts up automatically. The only annoying thing right now is that seems to take well over a minute (maybe 2) to actually start playing music. I LOVE using CarHome Ultra as my main screen though and that fires up automatically as well. That app offers a huge amount of tweaking and functionality geared toward driving (no affiliation, it just seems to be the only thing that works 'just right' for me).

For the first time in years, I feel like I need root

Coming from a long line of Samsung phones, including a Note 7, I'm loving this new pixel Xl.
However, one thing I've been noticing is the lack of little things I've gotten used to with Samsung.
Examples include:
No way to get battery percentage without opening quick settings
Wonky workaround for hotspot on vzw unlimited (not Google's fault)
No way to put phone on mute or speaker while on the phone from notification tray; have to go into the call itself to adjust these settings
Multi-window only allows you to split apps in the way Google wants you to, for example I can't leave a YouTube window barely on the screen and chrome open to most of the rest of the screen. This was very useful when watching somebody talk about something you don't need to see while browsing the web
There are always on display alternatives but to get them to properly use doze you need root
I am almost sure somebody is going to make that speaker mod I've seen on other phones that uses the earpiece as a second speaker, which in the past required root
I may want to rearrange my back and recent apps button because I'm used to it the other way around thanks to Samsung. But I'll live
I've been hearing about screen brightness mods to make the screen go super bright in the sun, matching brightness levels of this year's Samsung phones, but that modifies the kernel requiring root.
My past Samsung phones, although clearly not perfect, had most of these features easily avaliable or built in, and I was able to make them fast enough and usable with non root options like package disabler and startup managers. This time around I'm having the opposite problem, instead of having to disable unnecessary things, I need to add things that have been omitted.
The most unfortunate thing is I have a Verizon purchased, locked down bootloader pixel xl. Is root likely even without a bootloader unlock? I've had nexus devices and realize this isn't the same type of device. But I hope it is in the near future. Otherwise I see myself possibly returning this phone and buying a Craigslist Google store pre-order for $1100. (I know I know but root may be worth it)
Also if anyone has any ideas we could make this into an idea thread for root mods.
Basically the point of this post is to see if root is coming, I don't really need a bootloader unlock as badly because most of these mods only require root not any kernel mods or custom rows. I'm not complaining about the pixel it's a great phone, I'd just love to make it better than it is when looked at in comparison to say a Samsung.
I only have an answer to one of your issues -- that of the battery percentage. This is built in but is a bit hidden.
You'll need to enable the System UI tuner:
Code:
Swipe down from the top.
Tap the down arrow.
Hold down on the Settings icon.
Observe the System UI Tuner notification.
In Settings, tap System UI Tuner.
Tap Got It.
Inside of System UI tuner is an entry for "Battery" allowing one to "Always show percentage"

I was using Foxfi before, so that was also wonky but I'm not as used to this method
yeah you can install foxfi app and pdanet on your computer and this work around has been working for me for the past year been using insane amounts of data to tether. Yeah I say root it, unlock your bootloader now cuz it will wipe your device and wait for twrp to become available which should take like a week or two. I rooted my 6p a week after I had it. Using franco kernel which brightened my display and made my whites from yellow to white, using viperfx for unbelievable sound. I've never had a samsung but I can tell you one thing google phones always have the best development I believe the developer support is outstanding!

He has to overcome the locked Verizon bootloader issue initially. Some phones have gotten root with a locked bootloader using kexec as a workaround. I expect our devs here to completely crack this thing though.
Short answer is yes it's been done, but certainly not the norm. Usually the bootloader unlock is the primary goal which then makes root easy.

This is what scares me about switching. There are a lot of Samsung features that I have become accustomed to. A lot of people think their features in android when their only available on Samsung phones.
I think systemui tuner also has an option to switch the navbar buttons. I am on a OnePlus one awaiting my new phone but I saw it when I played with 7.0 previously. Currently back on cm13 for stability.
Thanks so much for this info finally I can see my battery percentage. Not a big deal to some but coming from the og droid turbo I wanted to see how this battery held up in comparison.

This may be true, however for somebody like me, I use a majority of the features exclusive to Samsung phones and love them, and so far nothing has been a deal breaker with this pixel xl. Definitely some annoyances, but nothing major. The speed and reliability differences with this phone versus even my note 7 more than outweigh the loss of features. I swear this phone may take me away from Samsung for the next few years. It's THAT good!
You can get a small battery percentage within the battery icon by enabling it in the System UI Tuner
This is a screenshot from my Nexus 6, but should be the same.

This doesn't pop up for me on my Verizon edition. Nothing pops up when I hold down the settings icon. Any idea?

I too tried this on my buddy's Verizon pixel. It did not work. It works on my Google pixel. Another Verizon handicap. I feel sorry for Verizon customers
I just did it on my Verizon pixel. Hold down about 3-4 seconds and I got a congratulations I've done it!

I can confirm on Verizon. Did it a couple of nights ago.

I know this is off topic, but how well does your Gear S2 work with the Pixel? I need to pick up a new smartwatch as I had the Gear S and it doesn't work with the Pixel. Does the Gear S2 use all of the capabilities it comes with? Been looking at the Huawei.

It works very well with the Pixel actually. I was quite surprised. I have had no issues yet.

Isn't the Gear specific to Samsung phones? Doesn't it use Tizen instead of Android Wear? I don't think they are compatible with any phones other than Samsung ones. I could be wrong though. I use a Moto 360 v2.
